• Navigating through a sea of hype

  This is a vague, open question, so if you have no interest in these, please leave now. A few years ago it seemed everyone thought the death of desktop software was imminent. Web applications were the future. Everyone would move to cloud-based software-as-a-service systems, and developing applications for specific end-user platforms like Windows would soon become something of a ghetto. Joel's "How Microsoft Lost the API War" was but one of many such pieces sounding the death knell for this way of software development. Flash-forward to 2010, and the hype is all around mobile devices, particularly the iPhone. Software-as-a-Service vendors--even small ones such as YCombinator startups--go out of their way to build custom applications for the iPhone and other smart phone devices; applications that can be quite sophisticated, that run only on specific hardware and software architectures and are thus inherently incompatible. Now some of you are probably thinking, "Well, only the decline of desktop software was predicted; mobile devices aren't desktops." But the term was used by those predicting its demise to mean laptops also, and really any platform capable of running a browser. What was promised was a world where HTML and related standards would supplant native applications and their inherent difficulties. We would all code to the browser, not the OS. But here we are in 2010 with the AppStore bulging and development for the iPad just revving up. A few days ago, I saw someone on Hacker News claim that the future of computing was entirely in small, portable devices. Apparently the future is underpowered, requires dexterous thumbs and induces near-sightedness. How do those who so vehemently asserted one thing now assert the opposite with equal vehemence, without making even the slightest admission of error? And further, how are we as developers supposed to sift through all of this? I bought into the whole web-standards utopianism that was in vogue back in '06-'07 and now feel like it was a mistake. Is there some formula one can apply rather than a mere appeal to experience?

• Is NUnit broken with Windows7 for C++/CLI?

  NUnit is failing in C++/CLI with a System.IO.FileNotFoundException. I have tried my own freshly-created project, the C++/CLI sample included with NUnit and the one from CodeProject How to use NUnit to test native C++ code using Visual Studio 2008sp1 with NUnit 2.5.5 as well as 2.4.8. I installed 2.4.8 just on C:\ in case there was something weird about paths with spaces such as Program Files (x86). I have no problems with a C# sample using NUnit. in NUnit GUI, all of these C++/CLI projects encounter the same problem, on attempting to open the projects. I'd really like to use NUnit but for now have had to go back to standard Microsoft tests System.IO.FileNotFoundException... • Re-ordering child nodes in django-MPTT

  I'm using Ben Firshman's fork of django-MPTT (hat tip to Daniel Roseman for the recommendation). I've got stuck trying to re-order nodes which share a common parent. I've got a list of primary keys, like this: ids = [5, 9, 7, 3] All of these nodes have a parent, say with primary key 1. At present, these nodes are ordered [5, 3, 9, 7], how can I re-order them to [5, 9, 7, 3]? I've tried something like this: last_m = MyModel.get(pk = ids.pop(0)) last_m.move_to(last_m.parent, position='first-child') for id in ids: m = MyModel.get(pk = id) m.move_to(last_m, position='right') Which I'd expect to do what I want, per the docs on move_to, but it doesn't seem to change anything. Sometimes it seems to move the first item in ids to be the first child of its parent, sometimes it doesn't. Am I right in my reading of the docs for move_to that calling move_to on a node n with position=right and a target which is a sibling of n will move n to immediately after the target? It's possible I've screwed up my models table in trying to figure this out, so maybe the code above is actually right. It's also possible there's a much more elegant way of doing this (perhaps one that doesn't involve O(n) selects and O(n) updates). Have I misunderstood something? Bonus question: is there a way of forcing django-MPTT to rebuild lft and rght values for all instances of a given model?

  I have started with the HelloTabwidget example and it works fine. • Ruby on Rails: How to sanitize a string for SQL when not using find?

  I'm trying to sanitize a string that involves user input without having to resort to manually crafting my own possibly buggy regex if possible, however, if that is the only way I would also appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction to a regex that is unlikely to be missing anything. There are a number of methods in Rails that can allow you to enter in native SQL commands, how do people escape user input for those? The question I'm asking is a broad one, but in my particular case, I'm working with a column in my Postgres database that Rails does not natively understand as far as I know, the tsvector, which holds plain text search information. Rails is able to write and read from it as if it's a string, however, unlike a string, it doesn't seem to be automatically escaping it when I do things like vector= inside the model. For example, when I do model.name='::', where name is a string, it works fine. When I do model.vector='::' it errors out: ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid: PGError: ERROR: syntax error in tsvector: "::" "vectors" = E'::' WHERE "id" = 1 This seems to be a problem caused by lack of escaping of the semicolons, and I can manually set the vector='\:\:' fine. I also had the bright idea, maybe I can just call something like: ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute "UPDATE medias SET vectors = ? WHERE id = 1", "::" However, this syntax doesn't work, because the raw SQL commands don't have access to find's method of escaping and inputting strings by using the ? mark. This strikes me as the same problem as calling connection.execute with any type of user input, as it all boils down to sanitizing the strings, but I can't seem to find any way to manually call Rails' SQL string sanitization methods. Can anyone provide any advice?

  Hi, We are running our cluster on Amazon EC2. we are using cloudera scripts to setup hadoop. On the master node, we start below services. 609 $AS_HADOOP '"$HADOOP_HOME"/bin/hadoop-daemon.sh start namenode' 610 $AS_HADOOP '"$HADOOP_HOME"/bin/hadoop-daemon.sh start secondarynamenode' 611 $AS_HADOOP '"$HADOOP_HOME"/bin/hadoop-daemon.sh start jobtracker' 612 613 $AS_HADOOP '"$HADOOP_HOME"/bin/hadoop dfsadmin -safemode wait' On the slave machine, we run the below services. 625 $AS_HADOOP '"$HADOOP_HOME"/bin/hadoop-daemon.sh start datanode' 626 $AS_HADOOP '"$HADOOP_HOME"/bin/hadoop-daemon.sh start tasktracker' The main problem we are facing is, hdfs safemode recovery is taking more than an hour and this is causing delays in our job completion. Below are the main log messages. 1. domU-12-31-39-0A-34-61.compute-1.internal 10/05/05 20:44:19 INFO ipc.Client: Retrying connect to server: ec2-184-73-64-64.compute-1.amazonaws.com/10.192.11.240:8020. Already tried 21 time(s). 2. The reported blocks 283634 needs additional 322258 blocks to reach the threshold 0.9990 of total blocks 606499. Safe mode will be turned off automatically. The first message is thrown in task trackers log because, job tracker is not started. job tracker didn't start because of hdfs safemode recovery. The second message is thrown during the recovery process. Is there something I am doing wrong? How much time does normal hdfs safemode recovery takes? • Manual drag-drop operations in Flex

  This is a two-part problem: A) I'm implementing several irregular drag-drop operations in Flex (e.g. DataGrid ItemRenderer into Tree). My preference was modifying DragManager operations to meet my needs, and in fact using DragManager allows me to do everything I need, but I'm having serious issues with performance. For example, dragging anything over a many-columned DataGrid, whether the drag was initiated with DragManager.doDrag, or just using native ListBase drag-drop functionality, slows the drag movement to a crawl. Even if the DataGrid is disabled/ not listenening for any move/drag events, this happens. On the other hand, if the drag is initiated by calling .startDrag() on the Sprite, the drag is smooth and performs great over DataGrids and everything else. So part A would be: Is there a reason why .startDrag() operations work so well, while drags initiated through DragManager.doDrag suffer so badly when over certain components? B) If indeed the solution is to handle drag-drops using .startDrag(), how would I go about determining what component the mouse is over when the drag is released? In my example, my dragged object is brought up to the top level of the display list, and so is being moved around in stage coordinates. mouseMove, mouseOver events don't fire on the components I'm dragging over because the mouse is constantly over the dragged component, so I would need some sort of stage.coordinate - visibleComponentAtThatCoordinate conversion. • Converting QXmlItem to QtDomElement or similar?

I'm parsing a fairly complicated XML file of the following structure: <root> ... ... <item> <subitem id="1"/> <text> text1 </text> </item> <item> <subitem id="2"/> <text> text2 </text> </item> ... <item> ... </item> ...</root> It's pretty crude but you get my drift I hope. I'm primarily interested in "item" nodes. So I wrote the following code (directly out of the Qt's online manual): QXmlQuery query; query.setQuery("//item/"); QXmlResultItems result; query.evaluateTo(&result); QXmlItem item(result.next()); while (!item.isNull()) { if (item.isNode()) { // WHAT DO I DO NOW? } item = result.next(); } Now, QXmlItem appears to represent two concepts, a literal value (like a string) or a Node, (which is what item.isNode() is doing). Unfortunately, I can't grasp how to convert the QXmlItem to something that will query-able again. In particular from the example above I'd like to grab the "id" attribute, and the text element. Can I do this using the XQuery approach, or am I way off base here? Any advice? Thanks!

If I give the dropdown list the same name as the property on my model the selected value is not set properly. Meaning this works: <%= Html.DropDownList("fam", typeof(EnumFamily), Model.Family)%> But this doesn't: <%= Html.DropDownList("family", typeof(EnumFamily), Model.Family)%> Because I'm trying to pass an entire object directly to the controller method I am posting to, I would really like to have the dropdown list named for the property on the model. When using the "right" name, the dropdown does post correctly, I just can't seem to set the selected value. I don't think this matters but I am running MVC 1 on mono 2.6

  I am entering mobile development. I have been working primarily in .NET since 1.0 came out in beta. Before that, I was mostly a C++ and Delphi guy and still dabble in C++ from time to time. I do web apps quite a bit so I am reasonably proficient with Javascript, JQuery and CSS. I have also done a few Java applications. I started web programming with CGI and live mostly in the ASP.NET MVC world these days. I am trying to decide on which platform/OS and tool to select. I am concerned with the size of the market available for my applications as well as the marketibility of the skills I will pick up. The apps I have in mind would work on both phones and pads. Some aspects of what I have in mind will play better on the bigger screens that will be available on pads. Here are the options I am considering: Apple iPhone/iPad using pure Apple SDK (Objective-C) Apple iPhone/iPad using Mono Touch (C#) Android using pure Android SDK (Java) Multiple platforms using something like Titanium to generate native apps from web technologies (HTML, CSS and Javascript) Multiple platforms using HTML5 web applications that run in the browser (HTML, CSS and Javascript). Which option would you choose? Do you have a different suggestion? What are the pros and cons?

• How to get around batch file processing limit

  I have a Windows batch file that processes all the files in a given directory. I have 206,783 files I need to process: for %%f in (*.xml) do call :PROCESS %%f goto :STOP :PROCESS :: do something with the file program.exe %1 > %1.new set /a COUNTER=%COUNTER%+1 goto :EOF :STOP @echo %COUNTER% files processed When I run the batch file, the following output is written: 65535 files processed As part of the processing, an output file is created for each file procesed, with a .new extension. When I do a dir *.new it reports 65,535 files exist. So, it appears my command environment has a hard limit on the number of files it can recognize, and that limit is 64K - 1. Is there a way to extend the command environment to manage more than 64K - 1 files? If not, would a VBScript or JavaScript be able to process all 206,783 files? I'm running on Windows 2003 server, Enterprise Edition, 32-bit. UPDATE It looks like the root cause of my issue was with the built-in Windows "extract" command for ZIP files. The files I have to process were copied from another system via a ZIP file. My server doesn't have a ZIP utility installed, just the native Windows commands. I right-clicked on the ZIP file, and did an "Extract all...", which apparently just extracted the first 65,535 files. I downloaded and installed 7-zip onto my server, unzipped all the files, and my batch script worked as intended.

The server invokes the callback when it is done with processing. The setup is similar to the one described in RMI Callbacks. Occasionally we are getting a "read time out" exception in the server upon invoking the callback method.   I'm getting a RuntimeException while executing some code that depends on generated xmlbeans classes. I can't figure out if this is: me missing something during code-generation or packaging a runtime dependency missing a misleading error message, and I should be looking elsewhere. The xbean.jar version is the same in the build and execution environment. Anyone seen this before or have any ideas? Thanks. ...snip...
