• Someone is using the struct name as a variable name too. What does the code really say? (c++)

  This morning we found an old chunk of code that was causing a library call to crash. struct fred { int a; int b; int c; }; fred fred[MAX_SIZE+1]; memset( fred, 0, sizeof(fred) * MAX_SIZE+1 ); It appears that the sizeof(fred) may have been the full array size, rather than the structure size, as it was overwriting a great deal of memory. The fact that it compiled without warning on several different systems seemed odd. Is there a correct semantic for this case where the type and variable name are colliding? or is this some sort of undefined behavior? or just a defect? I haven't been been clever enough to find anything on Google or our language help. Thanks Evil

• LINQ to Objects .Distinct() not pulling distinct objects

  I have two ways that I am doing a fuzzy search for a customer. One is by an abbreviated name and the other is by the customers full name. When I take these two and then union them together (which I have read several places should remove distinct values) I get duplicates. Thinking that all I need to do is then call the .Distinct() method on this I also still get Duplicates. Do I need to implement some compare functionality in my customer object?   I'm using Android's android.graphics.Canvas class to draw a ring. My onDraw method clips the canvas to make a hole for the inner circle, and then draws the full outer circle over the hole: clip = new Path(); clip.addRect(outerCircle, Path.Direction.CW); clip.addOval(innerCircle, Path.Direction.CCW); canvas.save(); canvas.clipPath(clip); canvas.drawOval(outerCircle, lightGrey); canvas.restore(); The result is a ring with a pretty, anti-aliased outer edge and a jagged, ugly inner edge: What can I do to antialias the inner edge? I don't want to cheat by drawing a grey circle in the middle because the dialog is slightly transparent. (This transparency isn't as subtle on on other backgrounds.)

• ESRI frameworks: java vs javascript

  I'm about to develop a web mapping application with ESRI Products like ArcGIS Server and Image Server. I can't find a good comparison between the Java Web ADF and the Javascript Framework. They're of course different because one is a full environment and the other is only client side but it's much more concise and the step to start is minimal. Another problem is that the Java Web ADF is not compatible with our current application server (JBoss 4.2.2) and require an old 4.0.2 version. Someone out there has experience that can help me? • Evaluating php generated javascript "inline"?

  If you look at the source of this page http://kingston.talking-newspapers.co.uk/ you will see a large amount of inline javascript near the top. I don't really want all this extra stuff floating around in my page source, I'd much rather get it off into a script tag, and then I can minify it and all sorts. If I call it as a php file, this SHOULD work in theory, I just end the js file extension with php instead, and in the header I put the following: header("Content-type:application/x-javascript"); but... a lot of the php variables used to generate the playlist within the javascript are setup at the beginning of the main index.php file, and in calling this php-generated js playlist file like this, it seems to evaluate it entirely separately, so it's full of errors. The only way round it I can think of is to have the page write a file, then immediately read it in. The other thing is, the playlist is likely to change often and dynamically, so I think I need to get minify to NOT cache it?

• Experience with laptop Keyboards?

  I'm thinking of retiring my 3 year old HP laptop I want to know which manufacturor makes laptops with the best Keyboards? I loved my Full width keyboard, with numberic pad on my HP, I've tried a a few laptop keyboards in shops and have found none of them satisfying to type with. What I want is something that will maximise my typing comfort. All the ones I see in shops seem to be designed to look good but feel horible. The keys are either too shiny, too small, or don't press down enough. All I want it a keyboard thats comfortable, I've been given a Lenovo laptop by my work and I've had to resort to pluging in a USB keyboard while I work, which is less than ideal.

• How to make an existing socket fail?

  OK. So, this is exactly the opposite of what everyone asks about in network programming. Usually, people ask how to make a broken socket work. I, on the other hand am looking for the opposite. I currently have sockets working fine, and want them to break to re-create this problem we are seeing. I am not sure how to go about intentionally making the socket fail by having a bad read. The trick is this: The socket needs to be a working, established connection, and then it must fail for whatever reason. I'm writing this in C and the drivers are running on a Linux system. The sockets are handled by a non-IP Level 3 protocol in Linux by a Linux Device Driver. I have full access to all of the code-base, I just need to find a way to tease it out so that it can fail.   Hi, Want to create a directory on windows from a PHP script. My script is in www/Test directory of Apache and want to create a folder(fold1) inside www/downloads directory. Inside the script, using, $dirName = "../downloads/fold1"; mkdir("{$dirName}"); If we use the full path of dirName like C:\Apache\www\downloads\fold1, it works fine.   I have a bunch of images that I need others to browse via a web browser in pretty much the same way as Apache-Gallery. I'd be able to dump all my images in a directory so that users hitting: http://server:port/directory would see small thumbnails and selecting an image would load it full size on a page with options to browse the previous or next image. I'm looking for a non Apache solution, much like the wonderfull Python simple http server, that can be launched anywhere with minimal configuration & fuss e.g. python -m SimpleHTTPServer 8000 In fact, the python solution above is pretty much want I want except it doesn't thumbnail the images but just a simple directory listing. Happy to use an app written in any common language so long as it is self contained and can run on linux on a custom port (and to re-iterate, not an Apache module).

  Hey everyone, I've got this damn annoying bug (or wrong setting) that makes the player reload whenever it's clicked. It's set to play when you click, so when you click it, it reloads. The circle begins.... The reloading only happens in Firefox. In Safari (and I assume Chrome), the video opens in its own window. Not ideal, but it still plays.   I'm an escalation engineer on a product which use both c# and delphi 2006 code. In most cases c# issues are debugged with windbg and delphi 2006 issues with eurekalog. But when the issue is a delphi memory usage, eurekalog doesn't give enough information to fix the issue and the only thing i have to debug it is a full memory dump file. I cannot (or i don't know how to) load symbol file in windbg because it is a .map file and not a .pdb file. So my questions are: Does anyone know how to load symbol from .map file in windbg? (Converting .map to .pdb or other) Does anyone know a tool to analyze dump file for delphi application?

• Doing Forms With Just Windows SharePoint Services 3.0?

  For the most part my organization is happy with WSS 3.0 (no upgrading to MOSS) with one exception, there is really just one form we'd like to put up somehow. It's fairly big form (basically change requests for IT services, on paper it's easily 2 full 8.5 by 11 pages). We thought about Custom ASP.NET coding as a separate stand-alone page or maybe as a web part. What have other people out there done? MOSS and Infopath is not really an option as it really is too expensive for us at this time. Thanks in advance!

• Using LaTeX, how can I have a list of references at the end of each section?

  I want to generate the bibliography for each section, and have it at the end of the section. When I do this at the moment it generates the full bibliography and places it after each section. Is there a way that this can be done? The advice here says "The chapterbib package provides an option sectionbib that puts the bibliography in a \section* instead of \chapter*, something that makes sense if there is a bibliography in each chapter. This option will not work when natbib is also loaded; instead, add the option to natbib. " I don't understand what this means, and I've tried experimenting with what I thought the options are. Specifically, what does "add the option to natbib" mean? Thank you for your help.

• How does the Licenses.licx based .Net component licensing model work?

  I've encountered multiple third part .Net component-vendors use a licensing scheme. On an evaluation copy, the components show up with a nag-screen or watermark or some such indicator. On a licensed machine, a Licenses.licx is created - with what appears to be just the assembly full name/identifiers. This file has to be included when the client assembly is built. How does this model work? Both from component-vendors' and users' perspective. What is the .licx file used for? Should it be checked in? We've had a number of issues with the wrong/right .licx file being checked in and what not

• Why are Views loaded from nibs being placed 20 pixels down from the status bar?

  I am trying to set up a layout as such in an iPad application. It will have three major views, which make up the whole screen. The views will be stacked one on top of the other, each taking up the full width. I have one major nib file which accounts for the entire screen space. In that nib file, I am instantiating the three view controllers with outlets. Then I have this code: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; [self.view addSubview:controllerOne.view]; [self.view addSubview:controllerTwo.view]; [self.view addSubview:controllerThree.view]; } This adds the views on top of one another and 20 pixels lower. However, after rotating to landscape and back they are right under the status bar. Do you know what would be causing this?

• Tools for website development

  Hi! I can't find any other post which addresses this topic on a purely general level. I'm very unexperienced in developing full scale websites. I get around using HTML and PHP for simple tasks. Now I'm looking at developing a more elaborate site and want to get hold of a good tool which doesn't eat my wallet to the bones. I guess I should add more intelligent text here about what I expect it to be capable of, but I really don't know so much. I guess the code/design/preview style in dreamweaver appealed to me, and I'm definetely going to use scripting like PHP or ASP.NET, some database work etc. I guess pretty much the standard (?) website development tasks. So, are there good tools out there I should be looking at?

• Cap deploy doesn't work all the sudden; something to do with FactoryGirl and assets

  I've been cap deploying my app all throughout it development, and this last time I tried to deploy it, it didn't work. I don't get why that command would have tried to do anything with FactoryGirl, though. Any ideas?
