• python dictionary conversion from string?

  if I've string like "{ partner_name = test_partner}" OR " { partner_name : test_partner } its an example string will be very complex with several special characters included like =, [ , ] , { , } what will be the best way to convert it into a python object - so I can process it I tried with eval but it requires " ' " for string, but how can we add this special character \' before starting and ending of every word, I tried regular express re.findal('\w+') but it fails when my string contains ' _ ' or like characters as it will separate the string by ' _ ' Object of this question is my application needs, user friendly language as input - and I thought Json Dict will be good - but user is lazzy to put " ' " before and after of each string... then I thought for yaml but its also complex, if anybody can suggest better user friendly input which I use as python object - then please help me out.

For example, using delimiters of ! ? . !? turning this: $string = 'Hello. A question? How strange! Maybe even surreal!? Who knows.'; into this array('Hello', '.', 'A question', '?', 'How strange', '!', 'Maybe even surreal', '!?', 'Who knows', '.'); Currently I'm trying to use print_r(preg_split('/([\!|\?|\.|\!\?])/', $string)); to capture the delimiters as a subpattern, but I'm not having much luck.

• IE8 positions DIV overlay wrong way and keeps playing video when it's hidden.

  Hi! Please take a look at: http://www.binarymark.com/Products/PasswordGenerator/default.aspx (the Overview tab, on the diagram). The issue is wjen you click on any of the diagram elements say "Character Groups" all browsers, except IE8 behave well - that is they display the overlay, start playing a video, and when the overlay is closed, the video stops playing an the div is hidden. IE8, on the other hand has two flaws: it positions the overlay way towards the bottom and too much to the right, and even more annoyingly - it keeps playing video in the background even when the overlay div is closed! I use flowplayer.org/tools/overlay/ for overlay. Can you help please? Thanks.

• Facebook page linking to external site sign-up process, capture permission to write to wall in process?

  Hi all, Have had a good hunt through the archive but can't find anyone trying to do this... hope someone familiar with the facebook API can confirm if it's possible? Basically I have a client who wants to replicate their membership sign up process in a tab on their facebook page. The form would still submit to their own website to process, we'd just be replicating the form fields. As an additional requirement they want to capture peoples facebook user ID and get permission to post back to a users wall at the same time... The idea being that once the user is a member we can post back to their wall so their friends see that they've signed up... Basically after a sanity check that: 1) these things are possible to do; 2) the best method to build the form in a FB page - I'm guessing using JS to create all fields & ajax to submit to the external site?   Hi, I'm starting to digg some rails plugins to create modal forms in rails. Almost all documents that you find are too old (2006,2007) or more focused in php. I would like to create a "feedback" tab that when you click on that, it opens a form. For example, you can check the railscast website, http://railscasts.com/. Ryan Bates made it in his website, but didnt make any screencast about it. any idea/tip about a rails plugin to work with jquery and to do those forms?

  I would need to know how to handle the intent between tabs. For example, I have a tab activity with two tabs. First on content is a text view. another one is a map view. When i click that text view it redirects to the tab2. it can be easily achieved by setCurrentTab(1) or setCurrentTabByTag("tab2") methods. But i want to pass lat and long values to that Map Activity to drop pin. What is the better way to use intents or getter/setter in java? What do you prefer? if your answer is "Intents". How?

• small string optimization for vector?

  I know several (all?) STL implementations implement a "small string" optimization where instead of storing the usual 3 pointers for begin, end and capacity a string will store the actual character data in the memory used for the pointers if sizeof(characters) <= sizeof(pointers). I am in a situation where I have lots of small vectors with an element size <= sizeof(pointer). I cannot use fixed size arrays, since the vectors need to be able to resize dynamically and may potentially grow quite large. However, the median (not mean) size of the vectors will only be 4-12 bytes. So a "small string" optimization adapted to vectors would be quite useful to me. Does such a thing exist? I'm thinking about rolling my own by simply brute force converting a vector to a string, i.e. providing a vector interface to a string. Good idea?

• How do I make my browser brute force an input field?

  Hi, There's a website I frequent that gives codes such as GD??Q-TPY32-TPTT3-9CM9P-F2QMQ and hints that the ?? is a number and a letter. If you're the first to unlock the code you can redeem the modest prize. So the obvious way to solve this problem is to brute-force the code. But obviously I don't want to sit in front of the computer for an hour to manually input all 10 * 26 combinations. Is there a way for me to tell my browser to input these codes (assume that each 5-character block is an individual text field). Or is there a special browser that enables some sort of macro-type feature? Thanks.

• is putting N in front of strings in scripts considered a "best practice"?

  Let's say I have a table that has a varchar field. If I do an insert like this: INSERT MyTable SELECT N'the string goes here' Is there any fundamental difference between that and: INSERT MyTable SELECT 'the string goes here' My understanding was that you'd only have a problem if the string contained a Unicode character and the target column wasn't unicode. Other than that, SQL deals with it just fine and converts the string with the N'' into a varchar field (basically ignores the N). I was under the impression that N in front of strings was a good practice, but I'm unable to find any discussion of it that I'd consider definitive. Title may need improvement, feel free.

• Making Flex HTML Control UnSelectable

  I am displaying some HTML text in an Adobe AIR Application that I do not want the user to be able to cut and paste. How do I make the HTML control disallow highlighting of the HTML without disabling the ScrollBars. mouseChildren=false works but disables the scrollbars which is unacceptable. Right now I have: <mx:HTML location="http://dexter/preview.html" width="100%" height="100%" id="PreviewArea" x="0" y="0" tabEnabled="false" tabChildren="false" focusEnabled="false" focusRect="null"/> But it's not working properly either. I have also tried overlaying a disabled transparent text control over the top of the HTML component, but the user is still able to tab to the HTML and use the keyboard controls to copy the text to the clipboard. Any hints?

I know the question I asked is posted many time in this forum. And I have tired all of the solutions available, but no luck I may case I am trying to read a dat file which is basically a msg/feed file having more than 22000 Characters. Every line may or may not be of same length. My requirement is to convert the file to fixed line length character file. I have a logic that work well using vb script, however its pretty slow. I have checked with For f/ but no luck. The only delimiter I have is EOT, which i can see in Textpad but not in notepad. I have tried with \n, token=. Please help me in resolving the issue. • How to use NGramTokenizerFactory or NGramFilterFactory?

  Hi, Recently, I am studying how to store and index using Solr. I want to do facet.prefix search. With whitespace tokenizer, "Where are you" will be splited into three words and indexed. If I search facet.prefix="where are", no result will be returned. I google and found NGramFilterFactory can help me. But when I apply this filter factory, I found the result is "w, h, e, ..., wh, ..", which split the sentence by character, not by token word. I use the parameters maxGramSize and minGramSize, set to 1 and 3. Does the NGramFilterFactory work right? Should I add some other parameters? Is there some other filter factories which can help me?   So in Java, whenever an indexed range is given, the upper bound is almost always exclusive. From java.lang.String: substring(int beginIndex, int endIndex) Returns a new string that is a substring of this string. The substring begins at the specified beginIndex and extends to the character at index endIndex - 1 From java.util.Arrays: copyOfRange(T[] original, int from, int to) from - the initial index of the range to be copied, inclusive to - the final index of the range to be copied, exclusive. From java.util.BitSet: set(int fromIndex, int toIndex) fromIndex - index of the first bit to be set. toIndex - index after the last bit to be set. As you can see, it does look like Java tries to make it a consistent convention that upper bounds are exclusive. My questions are: Is this the official authoritative recommendation? Are there notable violations that we should be wary of? Is there a name for this system? (ala "0-based" vs "1-based")

• Dynamic Button Layout without hard coding positions

  I would like to implement a view (it will actually be going into the footer of a UITableView) that implements 1-3 buttons. I would like the layout of these buttons (and the size of the buttons themselves) to change depending on which ones are showing. An example of almost the exact behavior I would want is at the bottom of the Info screen in the Contacts application when you are looking at a specific contact ("Add to Favorites" disappears when it is clicked, and the other buttons expand to take up the available space in a nice animation). As I'm running through the different layout scenarios, I'm hard coding all these values and I just think... "this is NOT the way I'm supposed to be doing this." It even APPEARS that Interface Builder has some features that may do this for me in the ruler tab, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how they work (if they work) on the phone. Does anyone have any suggestions, or a tutorial online that I could look at to point me in the right direction? Thanks much.

• Less Mathematical Approaches to Machine Learning?

  Out of curiosity, I've been reading up a bit on the field of Machine Learning, and I'm surprised at the amount of computation and mathematics involved. One book I'm reading through uses advanced concepts such as Ring Theory and PDEs (note: the only thing I know about PDEs is that they use that funny looking character). This strikes me as odd considering that mathematics itself is a hard thing to "learn." Are there any branches of Machine Learning that use different approaches? I would think that a approaches relying more on logic, memory, construction of unfounded assumptions, and over-generalizations would be a better way to go, since that seems more like the way animals think. Animals don't (explicitly) calculate probabilities and statistics; at least as far as I know.

• How to use Visual Studio and IIS7 together?

  Hi folks, i'm trying to use Visual Studio 2010 (but this also happens with VS2008) as my web server for all locahost development. When i go into the properties for my web application (sigh, it's a legacy web FORMS app) and check the Web tab .. then check the Use Local IIS Web Server option ... it only allows me to create a virtual directory against a website. Why?! this is not what I want :( I wanted to have my own IIS7 website (no virtual directory) and debug against that. Can anyone help me? As a side note, i tried to use the third option Use Custom Web Server .. which ends up pointing to my localhost iis7 server. Now, this works ... but when i wish to Start Debugging .. it errors :( (it's not sure how to attach to that process or something?) So - can anyone out there please help?

• Check through Javascript that page is loading something

  When the browser is loading something on a page you can see it in the status bar that it says "Waiting for..." or "Transfering..." etc. In firebug you can check in the net tab when something is being loaded and see when it stops. That is what I want. Is there a way for me to trigger an event when that happens ? Or to get the status of the page or something ? Any way for me to know when that changes ? I know I can do this easier if I use Ajax, but I can't since the page it's expecting an Excel report. Thanks

• Should I use interface builder or not?

  I'd like to know more about the pros and cons of using interface builder when developing iPhone/iPad apps. I've written a fairly complex and customized app that's on the app store right now, but all of the interfaces are hand coded as they are fairly complex. I've customised the navigation and tab bars with backgrounds, table view cells are manually drawn for speed, and some views are complex and scalable with many subviews. I'm pondering whether or not to start using interface builder but I'm not sure to what extent I'll use it and whether it's worth it at all. Is it quicker? Can things still be easily customised? Any advice would be most welcome!

• Is count(*) really expensive ?

  I have a page where I have 4 tabs displaying 4 different reports based off different tables. I obtain the row count of each table using a select count(*) from <table> query and display number of rows available in each table on the tabs. As a result, each page postback causes 5 count(*) queries to be executed (4 to get counts and 1 for pagination) and 1 query for getting the report content. Now my question is: are count(*) queries really expensive -- should I keep the row counts (at least those that are displayed on the tab) in the view state of page instead of querying multiple times? How expensive are COUNT(*) queries ?
