SINGLE SIGN ON SECURITY THREAT! FACEBOOK access_token broadcast in the open/clear

Subsequent to my posting there was a remark made that this was not really a question but I thought I did indeed postulate one. So that there is no ambiquity here is the question with a lead in: Since there is no data sent from Facebook during the Canvas Load process that is not at some point divulged, including the access_token, session and other data that could uniquely identify a user, does any one see any other way other than adding one more layer, i.e., a password, sent over the wire via HTTPS along with the access_toekn, that will insure unique untampered with security by the user? Using Wireshark I captured the local broadcast while loading my Canvas Application page. I was hugely surprised to see the access_token broadcast in the open, viewable for any one to see. This access_token is appended to any https call to the Facebook OpenGraph API. Using facebook as a single click log on has now raised huge concerns for me. It is stored in a session object in memory and the cookie is cleared upon app termination and after reviewing the FB.Init calls I saw a lot of HTTPS calls so I assumed the access_token was always encrypted. But last night I saw in the status bar a call from what was simply an http call that included the App ID so I felt I should sniff the Application Canvas load sequence. Today I did sniff the broadcast and in the attached image you can see that there are http calls with the access_token being broadcast in the open and clear for anyone to gain access to. Am I missing something, is what I am seeing and my interpretation really correct. If any one can sniff and get the access_token they can theorically make calls to the Graph API via https, even though the call back would still need to be the site established in Facebook's application set up. But what is truly a security threat is anyone using the access_token for access to their own site. I do not see the value of a single sign on via Facebook if the only thing that was established as secure was the access_token - becuase for what I can see it clearly is not secure. Access tokens that never have an expire date do not change. Access_tokens are different for every user, to access to another site could be held tight to just a single user, but compromising even a single user's data is unacceptable. http://www.creatingstory.com/images/InTheOpen.png Went back and did more research on this: FINDINGS: Went back an re ran the canvas application to verify that it was not any of my code that was not broadcasting. In this call: HTTP GET /connect.php/en_US/js/CacheData HTTP/1.1 The USER ID is clearly visible in the cookie. So USER_ID's are fully visible, but they are already. Anyone can go to pretty much any ones page and hover over the image and see the USER ID. So no big threat. APP_ID are also easily obtainable - but . . . http://www.creatingstory.com/images/InTheOpen2.png The above file clearly shows the FULL ACCESS TOKEN clearly in the OPEN via a Facebook initiated call. Am I wrong. TELL ME I AM WRONG because I want to be wrong about this. I have since reset my app secret so I am showing the real sniff of the Canvas Page being loaded. Additional data 02/20/2011: @ifaour - I appreciate the time you took to compile your response. I am pretty familiar with the OAuth process and have a pretty solid understanding of the signed_request unpacking and utilization of the access_token. I perform a substantial amount of my processing on the server and my Facebook server side flows are all complete and function without any flaw that I know of. The application secret is secure and never passed to the front end application and is also changed regularly. I am being as fanatical about security as I can be, knowing there is so much I don’t know that could come back and bite me. Two huge access_token issues: The issues concern the possible utilization of the access_token from the USER AGENT (browser). During the FB.INIT() process of the Facebook JavaScript SDK, a cookie is created as well as an object in memory called a session object. This object, along with the cookie contain the access_token, session, a secret, and uid and status of the connection. The session object is structured such that is supports both the new OAuth and the legacy flows. With OAuth, the access_token and status are pretty much al that is used in the session object. The first issue is that the access_token is used to make HTTPS calls to the GRAPH API. If you had the access_token, you could do this from any browser: https://graph.facebook.com/220439?access_token=... and it will return a ton of information about the user. So any one with the access token can gain access to a Facebook account. You can also make additional calls to any info the user has granted access to the application tied to the access_token. At first I thought that a call into the GRAPH had to have a Callback to the URL established in the App Setup, but I tested it as mentioned below and it will return info back right into the browser. Adding that callback feature would be a good idea I think, tightens things up a bit. The second issue is utilization of some unique private secured data that identifies the user to the third party data base, i.e., like in my case, I would use a single sign on to populate user information into my database using this unique secured data item (i.e., access_token which contains the APP ID, the USER ID, and a hashed with secret sequence). None of this is a problem on the server side. You get a signed_request, you unpack it with secret, make HTTPS calls, get HTTPS responses back. When a user has information entered via the USER AGENT(browser) that must be stored via a POST, this unique secured data element would be sent via HTTPS such that they are validated prior to data base insertion. However, If there is NO secured piece of unique data that is supplied via the single sign on process, then there is no way to guarantee unauthorized access. The access_token is the one piece of data that is utilized by Facebook to make the HTTPS calls into the GRAPH API. it is considered unique in regards to BOTH the USER and the APPLICATION and is initially secure via the signed_request packaging. If however, it is subsequently transmitted in the clear and if I can sniff the wire and obtain the access_token, then I can pretend to be the application and gain the information they have authorized the application to see. I tried the above example from a Safari and IE browser and it returned all of my information to me in the browser. In conclusion, the access_token is part of the signed_request and that is how the application initially obtains it. After OAuth authentication and authorization, i.e., the USER has logged into Facebook and then runs your app, the access_token is stored as mentioned above and I have sniffed it such that I see it stored in a Cookie that is transmitted over the wire, resulting in there being NO UNIQUE SECURED IDENTIFIABLE piece of information that can be used to support interaction with the database, or in other words, unless there were one more piece of secure data sent along with the access_token to my database, i.e., a password, I would not be able to discern if it is a legitimate call. Luckily I utilized secure AJAX via POST and the call has to come from the same domain, but I am sure there is a way to hijack that. I am totally open to any ideas on this topic on how to uniquely identify my USERS other than adding another layer (password) via this single sign on process or if someone would just share with me that I read and analyzed my data incorrectly and that the access_token is always secure over the wire. FileSystemWatcher Work is Done?

I setup a FsWatcher on a local filesystem directory. I only want to know when files are added to the directory so they can be moved to another filesystem. I seem to be able to detect when the first file is in, but actually I want to know when all files from a given copy operation are done. If I used Windows Explorer to copy files from one directory to another, Explorer would tell me that there are n seconds left in the transfer, so while there is some activity for the begin-transfer and end-transfer for each file, it appears that there is something for the begin-transfer and end-transfer for all files. I wonder if there is something similar that I can do just with the .NET Framework. I would like to know when "all" files are in and not just a single file in a "transaction". If there is nothing baked in, maybe I should come up with some kind of waiting/countering in order to only do my activity when a job is "done". Not sure if I'm making 100% sense on this one, please anyone comment. Thanks.

Browse for folder can't see camera device

In Delphi 2010, I want to allow users to browse and select a folder. The folder is on a device (?) created by a DSLR: The folder is visible in the Windows Explorer as shown above. And, the folder is visible in a TOpenDialog, allowing them to browse into the folder and choose a file. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get either SHBrowseForFolder (code I found on the web but don't understand) or SelectDirectory to see the camera device or folder beneath it. (Side note: IMO, SelectDirectory is a far nicer UI, since the user can see the files in the folders while browsing.) I assume this has to do with the fact that the folder is in a device (?) created by the camera software. I've seen some tricks where you call TOpenDialog to browse for folders with '*.' and then ExtractFileDir on the result, but that's not robust or, IMO, a good UI. What I'm looking for is a "Browse for folder" that can see the same devices (including the camera device) the TOpenDialog & Windows Explorer can see. (Ideally, it would have the nice appearance like the one below!) Any suggestions? Image of a MS-Word's folder browsing in Win7. (I wonder if it looks this pretty in XP.)

Trouble deciding how to add popup menu to eclipse plugin using either action ObjectContributions or command handlers

The issue is this: Most things I read on the web says that we should avoid actions when creating popup menus because the command framework allows for more decoupling. Example: http://wiki.eclipse.org/FAQ_What_is_the_difference_between_a_command_and_an_action%3F Fair enough. But I am having a heck of a time getting the command framework to add my menu when I right click on a .java file inside the editor, and only when I click inside the editor. I can get the menu to show (using 'with' and the activeEditor variable), but it also shows when I right click on the java file inside the package explorer, which I don't want. I suspect it's because the file is already open inside the editor. I also have a menu that gets added when I right click on the java file inside the package explorer, using IComplilationUnit. That works fine. So my problem is solved using a popup menu action for when I click inside the file. I also get access to to all the ISelection stuff there. But the coupling is to high and I lose the flexability of using handlers. I'm looking for either: Tell me I'm doing it the only way possible; or Tell me how to have my popup appear only when I right click on the java file editor. Regards

Safari & Frames in html

Hi, I am using Windows Expression web to design a embedded quicktime player that plays 4 separate videos in a main frame. Yes, I am using frames. Header Frame, Left Bar frame, Footer & Main centre frame. Everything works in Explorer as it should. Fit into div in CSS

Hello everyone my menu bar can't fit into my <div> area at different browser. I have checked with Opera and Chrome it looks fine but with Explorer and Firefox my menu can't fit. marshal data too short!!!

My application requires to keep large data objects in session. There are like 3-4 data objects each created by parsing a csv containing 150 X 20 cells having strings of 3-4 characters. My application shows this error- "marshal data too short". I tried this- Deleting the old session table. Deleting the old migration for session table. Creating a new migration using rake db: sessions:create. editing the migration manually, changing "text: data" to "longtext: data". running the migration using rake db: migrate. now when i open my application, i see this page- link text please someone help me, this is getting on my nerves!! other details of application-- In view "index.html.erb"- There is a link that makes ajax call to an action in controller, that action parses large csv file and makes an object out of it. this object is stored in session. XML transform element appearing in wrong place in document

I am having some problems with an XML transform and need some help. The stylesheet should iterate through all suffix elements and place the contents without the suffix tag next to the last text node within its first ancestor quote-block element (see desired ouput). It works when only a single suffix is present, but not when 2 are present, when 2 are present it places both suffixes next to each other in the last text node of the first quote-block. Any ideas? I have tried limiting the selections to ancestor::quote-block[1] in various places but that doesn't have the desired effect. Need some help on how to replay the last game of a java maze game

Hello, I am working on creating a Java maze game for a project. The maze is displayed on the console as standard output not in an applet. I have created most of hte code I need, however I am stuck at one problem and that is I need a user to be able to replay the last game i.e redraw the maze with the users moves but without any input from the user. I am not sure on what course of action to take, i was thinking about copying each users move or the position of each move into another array, as you can see i have 2 variables which hold the position of the player, plyrX and plyrY do you think copying these values into a new array after each move would solve my problem and how would i go about this? I have updated my code, apologies about the textIO.java class not being present, not sure how to resolve that exept post a link to TextIO.java [TextIO.java][1] My code below is updated with a new array of type char to hold values from the original maze (read in from text file and displayed using unicode characters) and also to new variables c_plyrX and c_plyrY which I am thinking should hold the values of plyrX and plyrY and copy them into the new array. Complete Guide to Networking Windows 7 with XP and Vista

Since there are three versions of Windows out in the field these days, chances are you need to share data between them. Today we show how to get each version to be share files and printers with one another. In a perfect world, getting your computers with different Microsoft operating systems to network would be as easy as clicking a button. With the Windows 7 Homegroup feature, it’s almost that easy. However, getting all three of them to communicate with each other can be a bit of a challenge. Today we’ve put together a guide that will help you share files and printers in whatever scenario of the three versions you might encounter on your home network. Sharing Between Windows 7 and XP The most common scenario you’re probably going to run into is sharing between Windows 7 and XP. Essentially you’ll want to make sure both machines are part of the same workgroup, set up the correct sharing settings, and making sure network discovery is enabled on Windows 7. The biggest problem you may run into is finding the correct printer drivers for both versions of Windows. Share Files and Printers Between Windows 7 & XP Map a Network Drive Another method of sharing data between XP and Windows 7 is mapping a network drive. If you don’t need to share a printer and only want to share a drive, then you can just map an XP drive to Windows 7. Although it might sound complicated, the process is not bad. The trickiest part is making sure you add the appropriate local user. This will allow you to share the contents of an XP drive to your Windows 7 computer. Map a Network Drive from XP to Windows 7 Sharing between Vista and Windows 7 Another scenario you might run into is having to share files and printers between a Vista and Windows 7 machine. The process is a bit easier than sharing between XP and Windows 7, but takes a bit of work. The Homegroup feature isn’t compatible with Vista, so we need to go through a few different steps. Depending on what your printer is, sharing it should be easier as Vista and Windows 7 do a much better job of automatically locating the drivers. How to Share Files and Printers Between Windows 7 and Vista Sharing between Vista and XP When Windows Vista came out, hardware requirements were intensive, drivers weren’t ready, and sharing between them was complicated due to the new Vista structure. The sharing process is pretty straight-forward if you’re not using password protection…as you just need to drop what you want to share into the Vista Public folder. On the other hand, sharing with password protection becomes a bit more difficult. Basically you need to add a user and set up sharing on the XP machine. But once again, we have a complete tutorial for that situation. Share Files and Folders Between Vista and XP Machines Sharing Between Windows 7 with Homegroup If you have one or more Windows 7 machine, sharing files and devices becomes extremely easy with the Homegroup feature. It’s as simple as creating a Homegroup on on machine then joining the other to it. It allows you to stream media, control what data is shared, and can also be password protected. If you don’t want to make your Windows 7 machines part of the same Homegroup, you can still share files through the Public Folder, and setup a printer to be shared as well. Use the Homegroup Feature in Windows 7 to Share Printers and Files Create a Homegroup & Join a New Computer To It Change which Files are Shared in a Homegroup Windows Home Server If you want an ultimate setup that creates a centralized location to share files between all systems on your home network, regardless of the operating system, then set up a Windows Home Server. It allows you to centralize your important documents and digital media files on one box and provides easy access to data and the ability to stream media to other machines on your network. Not only that, but it provides easy backup of all your machines to the server, in case disaster strikes. How to Install and Setup Windows Home Server How to Manage Shared Folders on Windows Home Server Conclusion The biggest annoyance is dealing with printers that have a different set of drivers for each OS. There is no real easy way to solve this problem. Our best advice is to try to connect it to one machine, and if the drivers won’t work, hook it up to the other computer and see if that works. Each printer manufacturer is different, and Windows doesn’t always automatically install the correct drivers for the device. Remove Office 2010 Beta and Reinstall Office 2007

Have you tried out the Office 2010 beta, but want to go back to Office 2007? Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to remove your Office 2010 beta and reinstall your Office 2007. The Office 2010 beta will expire on October 31, 2010, at which time you may see a dialog like the one below. At that time, you will need to either upgrade to the final release of Office 2010, or reinstall your previous version of Office. Our computer was running the Office 2010 Home and Business Click to Run beta, and after uninstalling it we reinstalled Office 2007 Home and Student. This was a Windows Vista computer, but the process will be exactly the same on Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. Additionally, the process to reinstall Office 2007 will be exactly the same regardless of the edition of Office 2007 you’re using. However, please note that if you are running a different edition of Office 2010, especially the 64 bit version, the process may be slightly different. We will cover this scenario in another article. Remove Office 2010 Click to Run Beta: To remove Office 2010 Click to Run Beta, open Control Panel and select Uninstall a Program. If your computer is running Windows 7, enter “Uninstall a program” in your Start menu search. Scroll down, select “Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010 (Beta)”, and click the Uninstall button on the toolbar. Note that there will be two entries for Office, so make sure to select the “Click-to-Run” entry. This will automatically remove all of Office 2010 and its components. Click Yes to confirm you want to remove it. Office 2010 beta uninstalled fairly quickly, and a reboot will be required. Once your computer is rebooted, Office 2010 will be entirely removed. Reinstall Office 2007 Now, you’re to the easy part. Simply insert your Office 2007 CD, and it should automatically startup the setup. If not, open Computer and double-click on your CD drive. Now, double-click on setup.exe to start the installation. Enter your product key, and click Continue… Click Install Now, or click Customize if you want to change the default installation settings. Wait while Office 2007 installs…it takes around 15 to 20 minutes in our experience. Once it’s finished close the installer. Now, open one of the Office applications. A popup will open asking you to activate Office. Make sure you’re connected to the internet, and click next; otherwise, you can select to activate over the phone if you do not have internet access. This should only take a minute, and Office 2007 will be activated and ready to run. Everything should work just as it did before you installed Office 2010. Enjoy! Office Updates Make sure to install the latest updates for Office 2007, as these are not included in your disk. Check Windows Update (search for Windows Update in the Start menu search), and install all of the available updates for Office 2007, including Service Pack 2. Conclusion This is a great way to keep using Office even if you don’t decide to purchase Office 2010 after it is released. Additionally, if you’re were using another version of Office, such as Office 2003, then reinstall it as normal after following the steps to remove Office 2010. Connecting to DB2 from SSIS

The project I'm currently working on involves moving various pieces of data from a legacy DB2 environment to some SQL Server and flat file locations. Most of the data flows are real time, so they were a natural fit for the client's MQSeries on their iSeries servers and BizTalk to handle the messaging. Some of the data flows, however, are daily batch type transmissions. For the daily batch transmissions, it was decided that we'd use SSIS to pull the data direct from DB2 to either a SQL Server or flat file. I'm not at all an SSIS guy, I've done a bit here and there, but mainly for situations were we needed to move data from a dev environment to QA, mostly informal stuff like that. And, as much as I'm not an SSIS guy, I'm even less a DB2/iSeries guy. Prior to this engagement, my knowledge of DB2 was limited to the fact that it's an IBM product and that it was probably a DBMS flatform (that's what the DB in DB2 means, right?). One of my first goals when I came onto this project was to develop of POC SSIS package to pull some data from DB2 and dump it to a flat file. It sounded like a pretty straight forward task. As always, the devil is in the details. Configuring the DB2 connection manager took a bit of trial and error. As such, I thought I'd post my experiences here in hopes that they might save someone the efforts I went through. That being said, please keep in mind, as I pointed out, I'm not at all a DB2 guy, so my terminology and explanations may not be 100% spot on. Before you get started, you need to figure out how you're going to connect to DB2. From the research I did, it looks like there are a few options. IBM has both an OLE DB and .Net data provider which can be found here. I installed their client access tools and tried to use both the .Net and OLE DB providers but I received an error message from both when attempting to connect to the iSeries that indicated I needed a license for a product called DB2 Connect. I inquired with one of my client's iSeries resources about a license for this product and it appears they didn't have one, so that meant the IBM drivers were out. The other option that I found quite a bit of discussion around was Microsoft's OLE DB Provider for DB2. This driver is part of the feature pack for SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition and can be downloaded here. As it turns out, I already had Microsoft's driver installed on my dev VM, which stuck me as odd since I hadn't installed it. I discovered that the driver is installed with the BizTalk adapter pack for host systems, which was also installed on my VM. However, it looks like the version used by the adapter pack is newer than the version provided in the SQL Server feature pack. Once you get the driver installed, create a connection manager in your package just like you normally would and select the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 from the list of available drivers. After you select the driver, you'll need to enter in your host name, login credentials and initial catalog. A couple of things to note here. First, the Initial catalog needs to be the same as your host name. Not sure why that is, but trust me, it just does. Second, for credentials, in my environment, we're using what the client's iSeries people refer to as "profiles". I guess this is similar to SQL auth in the SQL Server world. In other words, they've given me a username and password for connecting to DB, so I've entered it here. Next, click the Data Links button. On the Data Links screen, enter your package collection on the first tab. Package collection is one of those DB2 concepts I'm still trying to figure out. From the little bit I've read, packages are used to control SQL compilation and each DB2 connection needs one. The package collection, I believe, controls where your package is created. One of the iSeries folks I've been working with told me that I should always use QGPL for my package collection, as QGPL is "general purpose" and doesn't require any additional authority. Next click the ellipsis next to the Network drop-down. Here you'll want to enter your host name again. Again, not sure why you need to do this, but trust me, my connection wouldn't work until I entered my hostname here. Finally, go to the Advanced tab, select your DBMS platform and check Process binary as character. My environment is DB2 on the iSeries and iSeries is the replacement for AS/400, so I selected DB2/AS400 for my platform. Process binary as character was necessary to handle some of the DB2 data types. I had a few columns that showed all their data as "System.Byte[]". Checking Process binary as character resolved this. At this point, you should be good to go. You can go back to the Connection tab on the Data Links dialog to perform a couple of tests to validate your configuration. The Test Connection button is obvious, this just verifies you can connect to the host using the configuration data you've entered. The Packages button will attempt to connect to the host and create the packages required to execute queries. This isn't meant to be a comprehensive look SSIS and DB2, these are just some of the notes I've come up with since I've started working with DB2 and SSIS. I'm sure as I continue developing my packages, I'll find more quirks and will post them here.

Setting up a new Silverlight 4 Project with WCF RIA Services

Many of my clients are actively using Silverlight 4 and RIA Services to build powerful line of business applications. Getting things set up correctly is critical to being to being able to take full advantage of the RIA services plumbing and when developers struggle with the setup they tend to shy away from the solution as a whole. I’m a big proponent of RIA services and wanted to take the opportunity to share some of my experiences in setting up these types of projects. In late 2010 I presented a RIA Services Master Class here in St. Louis, MO through my firm (ArchitectNow) and the information shared in this post was promised during that presentation. One other thing I want to mention before diving in is the existence of a number of other great posts on this subject. I’ve learned a lot from many of them and wanted to call out a few of them. The purpose of my post is to point out some of the gotchas that people get caught up on in the process but I would still encourage you to do as much additional research as you can to find the perfect setup for your needs. If you do not have Visual Studio 2010 you can download the express version from http://www.microsoft.com/express. The Silverlight 4.0 tools and the WCF RIA Services components are installed via the Web Platform Installer (http://www.microsoft.com/web/download). Also, the examples given in this post are done in C#…sorry to you VB folks but the concepts are 100% identical. Setting up anew RIA Services Project This section will provide a step-by-step walkthrough of setting up a new RIA services project using a shared DLL for server side code and a simple Entity Framework model for data access. All projects are created with the consistent ArchitectNow.RIAServices filename prefix and default namespace. This would be modified to match your companies standards. First, open Visual Studio and open the new project window via File->New->Project. In the New Project window, select the Silverlight folder in the Installed Templates section on the left and select “Silverlight Application” as your project type. Verify your solution name and location are set appropriately. Note that the project name we specified in the example below ends with .Client. This indicates the name which will be given to our Silverlight project. I consider Silverlight a client-side technology and thus use this name to reflect that. Click Ok to continue. During the creation on a new Silverlight 4 project you will be prompted with the following dialog to create a new web ASP.NET web project to host your Silverlight content. As we are demonstrating the setup of a WCF RIA Services infrastructure, make sure the “Enable WCF RIA Services” option is checked and click OK. Obviously, there are some other options here which have an effect on your solution and you are welcome to look around. For our example we are going to leave the ASP.NET Web Application Project selected. If you are interested in having your Silverlight project hosted in an MVC 2 application or a Web Site project these options are available as well. Also, whichever web project type you select, the name can be modified here as well. Note that it defaults to the same name as your Silverlight project with the addition of a .Web suffix. At this point, your full Silverlight 4 project and host ASP.NET Web Application should be created and will now display in your Visual Studio solution explorer as part of a single Visual Studio solution as follows: Now we want to add our WCF RIA Services projects to this same solution. To do so, right-click on the Solution node in the solution explorer and select Add->New Project. In the New Project dialog again select the Silverlight folder under the Visual C# node on the left and, in the main area of the screen, select the WCF RIA Services Class Library project template as shown below. Make sure your project name is set appropriately as well. For the sample below, we will name the project “ArchitectNow.RIAServices.Server.Entities”. The .Server.Entities suffix we use is meant to simply indicate that this particular project will contain our WCF RIA Services entity classes (as you will see below). Click OK to continue. Once you have created the WCF RIA Services Class Library specified above, Visual Studio will automatically add TWO projects to your solution. The first will be an project called .Server.Entities (using our naming conventions) and the other will have the same name with a .Web extension. The full solution (with all 4 projects) is shown in the image below. The .Entities project will essentially remain empty and is actually a Silverlight 4 class library that will contain generated RIA Services domain objects. It will be referenced by our front-end Silverlight project and thus allow for simplified sharing of code between the client and the server. The .Entities.Web project is a .NET 4.0 class library into which we will put our data access code (via Entity Framework). This is our server side code and business logic and the RIA Services plumbing will maintain a link between this project and the front end. Specific entities such as our domain objects and other code we set to be shared will be copied automatically into the .Entities project to be used in both the front end and the back end. At this point, we want to do a little cleanup of the projects in our solution and we will do so by deleting the “Class1.cs” class from both the .Entities project and the .Entities.Web project. (Has anyone ever intentionally named a class “Class1”?) Next, we need to configure a few references to make RIA Services work. THIS IS A KEY STEP THAT CAUSES MANY HEADACHES FOR DEVELOPERS NEW TO THIS INFRASTRUCTURE! Using the Add References dialog in Visual Studio, add a project reference from the *.Client project (our Silverlight 4 client) to the *.Entities project (our RIA Services class library). Next, again using the Add References dialog in Visual Studio, add a project reference from the *.Client.Web project (our ASP.NET host project) to the *.Entities.Web project (our back-end data services DLL). To get to the Add References dialog, simply right-click on the project you with to add a reference to in the Visual Studio solution explorer and select “Add Reference” from the resulting context menu. You will want to make sure these references are added as “Project” references to simplify your future debugging. To reiterate the reference direction using the project names we have utilized in this example thus far: .Client references .Entities and .Client.Web reference .Entities.Web. If you have opted for a different naming convention, then the Silverlight project must reference the RIA Services Silverlight class library and the ASP.NET host project must reference the server-side class library. Next, we are going to add a new Entity Framework data model to our data services project (.Entities.Web). We will do this by right clicking on this project (ArchitectNow.Server.Entities.Web in the above diagram) and selecting Add->New Project. In the New Project dialog we will select ADO.NET Entity Data Model as in the following diagram. For now we will call this simply SampleDataModel.edmx and click OK. It is worth pointing out that WCF RIA Services is in no way tied to the Entity Framework as a means of accessing data and any data access technology is supported (as long as the server side implementation maps to the RIA Services pattern which is a topic beyond the scope of this post). We are using EF to quickly demonstrate the RIA Services concepts and setup infrastructure, as such, I am not providing a database schema with this post but am instead connecting to a small sample database on my local machine. The following diagram shows a simple EF Data Model with two tables that I reverse engineered from a local data store. If you are putting together your own solution, feel free to reverse engineer a few tables from any local database to which you have access. At this point, once you have an EF data model generated as an EDMX into your .Entites.Web project YOU MUST BUILD YOUR SOLUTION. I know it seems strange to call that out but it important that the solution be built at this point for the next step to be successful. Obviously, if you have any build errors, these must be addressed at this point. At this point we will add a RIA Services Domain Service to our .Entities.Web project (our server side code). We will need to right-click on the .Entities.Web project and select Add->New Item. In the Add New Item dialog, select Domain Service Class and verify the name of your new Domain Service is correct (ours is called SampleService.cs in the image below). Next, click "Add”. After clicking “Add” to include the Domain Service Class in the selected project, you will be presented with the following dialog. In it, you can choose which entities from the selected EDMX to include in your services and if they should be allowed to be edited (i.e. inserted, updated, or deleted) via this service. If the “Available DataContext/ObjectContext classes” dropdown is empty, this indicates you have not yes successfully built your project after adding your EDMX. I would also recommend verifying that the “Generate associated classes for metadata” option is selected. Once you have selected the appropriate options, click “OK”. Once you have added the domain service class to the .Entities.Web project, the resulting solution should look similar to the following: Note that in the solution you now have a SampleDataModel.edmx which represents your EF data mapping to your database and a SampleService.cs which will contain a large amount of generated RIA Services code which RIA Services utilizes to access this data from the Silverlight front-end. You will put all your server side data access code and logic into the SampleService.cs class. The SampleService.metadata.cs class is for decorating the generated domain objects with attributes from the System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations namespace for validation purposes. FINAL AND KEY CONFIGURATION STEP! One key step that causes significant headache to developers configuring RIA Services for the first time is the fact that, when we added the EDMX to the .Entities.Web project for our EF data access, a connection string was generated and placed within a newly generated App.Context file within that project. While we didn’t point it out at the time you can see it in the image above. This connection string will be required for the EF data model to successfully locate it’s data. Also, when we added the Domain Service class to the .Entities.Web project, a number of RIA Services configuration options were added to the same App.Config file. Unfortunately, when we ultimately begin to utilize the RIA Services infrastructure, our Silverlight UI will be making RIA services calls through the ASP.NET host project (i.e. .Client.Web). This host project has a reference to the .Entities.Web project which actually contains the code so all will pass through correctly EXCEPT the fact that the host project will utilize it’s own Web.Config for any configuration settings. For this reason we must now merge all the sections of the App.Config file in the .Entities.Web project into the Web.Config file in the .Client.Web project. I know this is a bit tedious and I wish there were a simpler solution but it is required for our RIA Services Domain Service to be made available to the front end Silverlight project. Much of this manual merge can be achieved by simply cutting and pasting from App.Config into Web.Config. Unfortunately, the <system.webServer> section will exist in both and the contents of this section will need to be manually merged. Fortunately, this is a step that needs to be taken only once per solution. As you add additional data structures and Domain Services methods to the server no additional changes will be necessary to the Web.Config. Next Steps At this point, we have walked through the basic setup of a simple RIA services solution. Unfortunately, there is still a lot to know about RIA services and we have not even begun to take advantage of the plumbing which we just configured (meaning we haven’t even made a single RIA services call). I plan on posting a few more introductory posts over the next few weeks to take us to this step. Programmatically use a server as the Build Server for multiple Project Collections

Important: With this post you create an unsupported scenario by Microsoft. It will break your support for this server with Microsoft. So handle with care. I am the administrator an a TFS environment with a lot of Project Collections. In the supported configuration of Microsoft 2010 you need one Build Controller per Project Collection, and it is not supported to have multiple Build Controllers installed. Jim Lamb created a post how you can modify your system to change this behaviour. But since I have so many Project Collections, I automated this with the API of TFS. When you install a new build server via the UI, you do the following steps Register the build service (with this you hook the windows server into the build server environment) Add a new build controller Add a new build agent So in pseudo code, the code would look like foreach (projectCollection in GetAllProjectCollections) { CreateNewWindowsService(); RegisterService(); AddNewController(); AddNewAgent(); } The following code fragements show you the most important parts of the method implementations. The Complementary Roles of PLM and PIM

In short, PLM is the master for Product Definition, wherever manufacturing takes place. Product Information Management (PIM) is a product suite that has evolved in parallel to PLM. Product Information Management (PIM) can extend the value of PLM implementations by providing complementary tools and capabilities. More relevant in the area of Product Commercialization, the vision for PIM is to manage product information throughout an enterprise and supply chain to improve product-related knowledge management, information sharing and synchronization from multiple data sources. PIM success stories have shown the ability to provide multiple benefits, with particular emphasis on reducing information complexity and information management costs. Product Information in PIM is typically treated as the commercial view of a material or part, including sales and marketing information and categorization. PIM collects information from multiple manufacturing sites and multiple suppliers into its repository, but also provides integration tools to push the information back out to the other systems, serving as an active central repository with the aim to provide a holistic view on any product sold by a company (hence the name “Product Hub”). In short, PIM is the master of commercial Product Information. My Ubuntu is booting really slow (Windows is booting faster...).
