• MySQL table data transformation -- how can I dis-aggregate MySQL time data?

  We are coding for a MySQL data warehousing application that stores descriptive data (User ID, Work ID, Machine ID, Start and End Time columns in the first table below) associated with time and production quantity data (Output and Time columns in the first table below) upon which aggregate (SUM, COUNT, AVG) functions are applied. We now wish to dis-aggregate time data for another type of analysis. It assumes a constant rate of production and divides output by the difference in minutes plus one to populate the new table's Output column. I know this can be done in code...but can it be done entirely in a MySQL insert statement (or otherwise entirely in MySQL)? I am thinking of a INSERT ... INTO construction but keep getting stuck. An additional complexity is that there are hundreds of machines to include in the operation so there will be multiple rows (one for each machine) for each minute of the day. • In Java, howd do I iterate through lines in a textfile from back to front

  Basically I need to take a text file such as : Fred Bernie Henry and be able to read them from the file in the order of Henry Bernie Fred The actual file I'm reading from is 30MB and it would be a less than perfect solution to read the whole file, split it into an array, reverse the array and then go from there. It takes way too long. My specific goal is to find the first occurrence of a string (in this case it's "InitGame") and then return the position beginning of the beginning of that line. I did something like this in python before. My method was to seek to the end of the file - 1024, then read lines until I get to the end, then seek another 1024 from my previous starting point and, by using tell(), I would stop when I got to the previous starting point. So I would read those blocks backwards from the end of the file until I found the text I was looking for. So far, I'm having a heck of a time doing this in Java. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you live near Baltimore it may even end up with you getting some fresh baked cookies. Thanks!

  I have a status which is stored as a string of a set length, either in a file or a database. I'm looking to enumerate the possible status' I have the following type to define the possible status' Type TStatus = (fsNormal = Ord('N'),fsEditedOnScreen = Ord('O'), fsMissing = Ord('M'),fsEstimated = Ord('E'),fsSuspect = Ord('s'), fsSuspectFromOnScreen = Ord('o'),fsSuspectMissing = Ord('m'), fsSuspectEstimated = Ord('e')); Firstly is this really a good idea? or should I have a seperate const array storing the char conversions? That would mean more than one place to update. Now convert a string to a status array I have the following, but how can I check if a char is valid without looping through the enumeration?   It seems that in language like C, Java, and Ruby (as opposed to Javascript), a new scope is created for each iteration of a loop block, and the local variable defined for the loop is actually made into a local variable every single time and recorded in this new scope? For example, in Ruby: p RUBY_VERSION $foo = [] (1..5).each do |i| $foo[i] = lambda { p i } end (1..5).each do |j| $foo[j].call() end the print out is: [MacBook01:~] $ ruby scope.rb "1.8.6" 1 2 3 4 5 [MacBook01:~] $ So, it looks like when a new scope is created, a new local copy of i is also created and recorded in this new scope, so that when the function is executed at a later time, the "i" is found in those scope chains as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 respectively. Is this true? (It sounds like a heavy operation). Contrast that with p RUBY_VERSION $foo = [] i = 0 (1..5).each do |i| $foo[i] = lambda { p i } end (1..5).each do |j| $foo[j].call() end This time, the i is defined before entering the loop, so Ruby 1.8.6 will not put this i in the new scope created for the loop block, and therefore when the i is looked up in the scope chain, it always refer to the i that was in the outside scope, and give 5 every time: [MacBook01:~] $ ruby scope2.rb "1.8.6" 5 5 5 5 5 [MacBook01:~] $ I heard that in Ruby 1.9, i will be treated as a local defined for the loop even when there is an i defined earlier? The operation of creating a new scope, creating a new local copy of i each time through the loop seems heavy, as it seems it wouldn't have matter if we are not invoking the functions at a later time. So when the functions don't need to be invoked at a later time, could the interpreter and the compiler to C / Java try to optimize it so that there is not local copy of i each time?

• Factory Girl: Automatically assigning parent objects

  I'm just getting into Factory Girl and I am running into a difficulty that I'm sure should be much easier. I just couldn't twist the documentation into a working example. Assume I have the following models: class League < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :teams end class Team < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :league has_many :players end class Player < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :team end What I want to do is this: team = Factory.build(:team_with_players) and have it build up a bunch of players for me. I tried this: Factory.define :team_with_players, :class => :team do |t| t.sequence {|n| "team-#{n}" } t.players {|p| 25.times {Factory.build(:player, :team => t)} } end But this fails on the :team=>t section, because t isn't really a Team, it's a Factory::Proxy::Builder. I have to have a team assigned to a player. In some cases I want to build up a League and have it do a similar thing, creating multiple teams with multiple players. What am I missing?

• Rails named_scope across multiple tables

  I'm trying to tidy up my code by using named_scopes in Rails 2.3.x but where I'm struggling with the has_many :through associations. I'm wondering if I'm putting the scopes in the wrong place... Here's some pseudo code below. The problem is that the :accepted named scope is replicated twice... I could of course call :accepted something different but these are the statuses on the table and it seems wrong to call them something different. Can anyone shed light on whether I'm doing the following correctly or not? I know Rails 3 is out but it's still in beta and it's a big project I'm doing so I can't use it in production yet. class Person < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :connections has_many :contacts, :through => :connections named_scope :accepted, :conditions => ["connections.status = ?", Connection::ACCEPTED] # the :accepted named_scope is duplicated named_scope :accepted, :conditions => ["memberships.status = ?", Membership::ACCEPTED] end class Group < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :memberships has_many :members, :through => :memberships end class Connection < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :person belongs_to :contact, :class_name => "Person", :foreign_key => "contact_id" end class Membership < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :person belongs_to :group end I'm trying to run something like person.contacts.accepted and group.members.accepted which are two different things. Shouldn't the named_scopes be in the Membership and Connection classes? One solution is to just call the two different named scope something different in the Person class or even to create separate associations (ie. has_many :accepted_members and has_many :accepted_contacts) but it seems hackish and in reality I have many more than just accepted (ie. banned members, ignored connections, pending, requested etc etc)

They are obviously being uploaded as rack/multipart but the way that I'm iterating over my params hash must be causing the problem. I could REALLY use some help, so I can stop pulling out my hair. • How can I work around SQL Server - Inline Table Value Function execution plan variation based on par

  Here is the situation: I have a table value function with a datetime parameter ,lest's say tdf(p_date) , that filters about two million rows selecting those with column date smaller than p_date and computes some aggregate values on other columns. It works great but if p_date is a custom scalar value function (returning the end of day in my case) the execution plan is altered an the query goes from 1 sec to 1 minute execution time.   I am trying to assign salespeople (rsSalespeople) to customers (rsCustomers) in a round-robin fashion in the following manner: Navigate to first Customer, assign the first SalesPerson to the Customer. Move to Next Customer. If rsSalesPersons is not at EOF, move to Next SalesPerson; if rsSalesPersons is at EOF, MoveFirst to loop back to the first SalesPerson. Assign this (current) SalesPerson to the (current) Customer. Repeat step 2 until rsCustomers is at EOF (EOF = True, i.e. End-Of-Recordset).   I have a big application covered by more than a thousand tests via rspec. We just made the choice to redirect any page like : / /foo /foo/4/bar/34 ... TO : /en /en/foo /fr/foo/4/bar/34 .... It's breaking a lot of my tests, ex : it "should return 404" do Video.should_receive(:failed_encodings).and_return([]) get :last_failed_encoding response.status.should == "404 Not Found" end To fix this test, I should do : get :last_failed_encoding, :locale => "en" But ... seriously I don't want to fix all my test one by one ... • MS Access 2003 - Save button enabling on form open on different tabs

  I have a tab control on a form, and a couple different tabs have save buttons on them. Whenever I save the page(having this usercontrol) the datepicker with disable set to true is empty. All other datepickers save fine. Here is my code.
