• Should I be using libraries if I'm trying to learn how to program?

  I have been programming "a lot" in the past few months and at first I was trying to find the "easyest" language. Fortunately I realized that it's not about the language, it's about learning HOW to code. I ran into the Stanford lectures online (programming methodology) and I watched them all (around 23 hours total) awhile ago. Then I got into Java ME and programmed about 28.47% of a mobile RPG game (only around 2k lines of code). I feel like I learned a lot from those two experiences compared to previous ones but now that I'm moving into flash/actionscript 3.0 development and I'm finding myself learning like I did when I first started with PHP. I'm not really getting whats under the hood kind of. I'm finding myself using libraries to speed up development time which doesn't seem like a bad thing BUT I personally do not know how to write the libraries myself off hand. So should I be coding everything myself or is it ok to use libraries when you don't even know how to code them?

• Quickest and most efficient method to search top 3 numbers?

  I currently have an array of around 8 - 10 numbers that changes on a periodic basis. So around every 5 - 10 seconds the numbers get updated. I need to get the top 3 numbers in the array every 10 seconds. This is all done on a mobile device. At the minute I iterate through the array 3 times and each time I take out the three highest numbers and place them in three previously declared variables. My question is what should I look to do to increase speed and efficiency in this instance?

  I'm not the most disciplined dev, dont know standards and am self-taught so bear with me. I create stuff very logically and fast but not always using 'programming standards'. I have a mobile app using geolocation API. it gets thousands of places from my db and makes gmaps v3 markers for the ones around the user's current location. there is an ajax call from my JS to an aspx page that calls the database, makes a json string, and sends the json string to the javascript that then creates the google map markers. would i save time if the json string was in a flat file? im not sure if, generally speaking, accessing a sql db from an aspx page is faster than c# file i/o on a flat file with pre-rendered JSON. (of course, using the flat file, it would update everytime the db is updated)

When someone asks how to center a page, then the response is like: margin-left:50%; left:(-1/2 width); I used this code on a site with a width of 1000px,so it comes to screens, where this site does not fit.   I'm helping out with a project for an embedded device that only has USB and no serial. This device is running Linux. These days, when we need to connect to a serial port on a device we typically use a USB to serial adapter (on something like a phone system or a load balancing device, etc). I would like to know if it is possible to have the host device behave as though it were a serial adapter, thus removing the need for one. Given the nature of USB, is this approach even necessary? To recap, I would like to be able to connect a single A-to-A USB cable from my workstation (be it windows or linux) to this device, for the purpose of administration (especially initial setup), using minicom, putty or hyperterminal.   I have McAffee virusscan on my work computer, and every time I start up, I get 2 log entries like this: Blocked by port blocking rule C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe Anti-virus Standard Protection:Prevent IRC communication The difference between the two, is that at the end there are 2 different IP addresses (which I don't recognise as belongs to us) with port :6667 on one and :6669 on the other. Although this is logged, Skype seems to work as expected; including talking, chatting and screen sharing (new feature in Skype 4.1). Anyone knows anything about what this is? EDIT: I also have a Skype certified plugin in Skype called Cucku Backup. I did not find anything in the documentation that Cucku is trying to access these ports through Skype, but it could be...?   I can't get USB tethering to work. My setup: iMac with Mac OS 10.6.2 iPhone 3G, Sofware version 3.1.2 (Build 7D11) The phone shows up in iTunes and syncing works as it should. I went to System Preferences / Network and added the iPhone as a Network Service. To the right there is a status message for the selected service. With the iPhone not plugged in, the status message reads: Either the cable for iPhone is not plugged in or the device is not responding. With the iPhone plugged in, the status message reads: Either the cable for iPhone USB is not plugged in or the device is not responding. Almost identical messages, the only difference is "USB". Any clues?

• 64-bit Windows 7 softphone to make SIP calls without registering with a SIP proxy?

  We have test tools that require us to call SIP addresses like localhost:5061. I used to use SJPhone on Windows XP, and an older version of X-lite, which both worked fine, and didn't require the SIP phone to be registered with a SIP proxy. I have just upgraded to Windows 7 and SJPhone doesn't seem to work any more (see forum here for others with the problem) - it says "No sound input device / No sound output device" at startup. I have tried a range of other softphones (X-lite 3, X-lite 4, Zoiper, 3CX), but I can't seem to find any that will install on Windows 7 and will let me call a SIP address like localhost:5061. It might be that I just don't know how to configure these phones to do it...

• Google Talk chat status permanently available

  I logged into google talk from the blackberry talk application and it set the status as available. Now google talk shows me as being permanently available even though I have logged out of every possible place I can think of (including the phone). I have used the gmail feature that allows one to log out of all other locations. I have logged out and uninstalled the blackberry app. Showing status as online isn't such a problem if the chats weren't being eaten by this unknown app as well. I primarily use google chat from gmail, so if there is a way to get my chat requests properly routed to the gmail window, please let me know.

• Injection of banners in my webbrowsers possible malware

  Recently I have started to suspect that I have some kind of virus on my computer. There are 3 symptoms: Banners are being displayed on pages that doesn't use commercials, for instance when viewing screen-shots on Steam. It is only displayed after the rest of the page has been loaded and seems to be injected into it. The whole page is replaced with a commercial with the option to skip the commercial. The page is replaced with a search window claiming that the page could not be found. I have tried to scan my computer with Antivir and Adaware but only found a couple of tracking cookies. I have run HijackThis but since this isn't really my area I haven't been able to discern what shouldn't be there except the line about zonealarm since I have uninstalled it. Is there anyone out there who is able to see if there is anything suspicious in the log-file at the end or has suggestions regarding programs that might be better to find the virus than Antivir and Adaware? • Files missing after copying from one sdcard to another using Ubuntu 12.04

  I have two Kingston sdcards 8GB and 32GB. The 8GB for HTC Sensation and 32GB for my Tablet (Chinese). I soon ran out of space on my phone and decided to swap the data between the sdcards. I copied the data of 32GB sdcard to my PC(with Ubuntu 12.04) deleted everything on the 32GB sdcard and copied data from the 8GB sdcard to the other sdcard. At last I copied the data from my PC to the 8GB sdcard(before this I deleted everything that was on it before). Now the problem is that the 8GB sdcard has the data exactly the same, but the 32GB sdcard has some missing data. All my photos(not copied or posted on Facebook) and Songs are lost. Please help as to what I can do to get my data back? I have Android Revolution HD (ICS 4.0.3) on my rooted HTC Sensation (India). I suspect it has something to do with my data loss.

  Are there any T38modem users here? I'm trying to figure out how to call T38modem with SIP. I've got everything except the --route option for receiving. I know my own phone number, but I am not sure how to set it up. Currently, I have: --route "modem:0.*"="sip:<dn>@64.136.174.30" --route "modem:1.*=sip:[email protected]" I've also tried: --route "modem:*.*"="sip:<dn>@64.136.174.30" --route"sip:*@74.94.184.154"="modem:<dn>@127.0.0.1" what amI doing wrong? • Most basic, low power home surveillance system

  I am thinking of setting up a simple but effective surveillance system for my house that is: Very low powered (preferably no PCs left running out of stand-by mode) Cheap. When motion (or sound) is detected, I would like it to: Send an email/phone alert to me Record and upload video to the web (in case they steal the camera) So I imagine a system where I leave a netbook PC in stand-by mode and have it woken up by a motion detector. This initiates software to send alerts and periodically upload recorded video to the web. The software part is easy for me, but I'm not really a gadget-man so I'd like some advice on using a motion sensor of some sort to wake up the PC. Does anyone have some good advice? • Recover a lost IBM DS4300 SAN password?

  I have a pair of IBM DS4300 SAN units that I need to perform a firmware upgrade on. Unfortunately the admin passwords on these units have been lost and now need to be reset. I had hoped the default password of 'infiniti' would work but it seems that it must have been changed. I know the method here is to contact IBM but the cost of that phone call is ludicrous if someone out here knows what they're going to tell me to do. These units are out of warranty and the cost of support is beyond what we have the budget for. Is there an interrupt I can enter during the boot process (similar to a cisco password recovery) or is there a hardware/software tool I require? Please, if anyone has ever gone through the process of an IBM password recovery I’m asking for a little help. EDIT: Just to clarify, the password I need to reset is the one used for serial cable access and not for storage manager. Sorry if I have caused more confusion.

As mentioned, this can't be done with the main router, due to its limited features. DHCP is turned off on the second router, since it gets its IP from the main one. Is there a possibility to set up dynamic DNS on the second router, without changing any (or much) on the main router? Maybe as a side note: I live in Germany, don't know if the set up of the routers are different in other countries.

• Too many connections to 212.192.255.240

  Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing.   I've seen a number of neat iPhone apps recently that I'd like to use. In particular, there are a number of neat musical apps (metronome, tuner, etc.) that seem highly rated, and have no real Mac equivalent. I don't have a recent iPod/iPhone/iPad (I don't need portability or a phone and it seems silly to pay hundreds of dollars to run $15 worth of apps), but I do have an Intel (C2D) Mac. Can the iPhone dev simulator, or any other emulator, download and run iPhone App Store apps?

• Bluetooth device won't re-add after being removed (Windows 7)

  I've got a SBH52 headset, it works fine on my android phone, then I tried to use it with my Windows 7 PC, then it won't work because Microsoft Windows dosen't have native support for A2DP connections and one of the answers on the previous link said that removing the device from "devices and printers", running this software and then re-add the device would solve the problem. But the big problem is that they won't pair again: I tried, hopelessly, the suggested fixes from Windows, it won't work. By the way, it is Windows 7 (x64), it just looks like Windows 8. I had this problem once many years ago with other PC and Bluetooth device, I remember it had something to do with drivers that were not removed and I tried to delete them from somewhere, and as far as I remember it worked, but no idea how. In short, how can I pair it again with my PC?
