• How does "Open With" some app in iPhone work?

  As far as I know, from iOS SDK 3.2, file type handling is added and an iOS application can associate itself with some file type so that other applications can open this kind of file with the application. Because of the sandbox mechanism in iOS, I wonder when a file in appA is opened with appB, which registered itself with this kind of file, what will happen? Is this file copied to appB and both appA and appB keep a copy of this file? If the answer is yes, is it possible to make appB open the file under appA's document folder? I cannot find any Apple documentation on this. For example, appA stores a Keynote document in it, if I open this Keynote document with the Keynote app, is it possible to let Keynote app to edit this document in place so that after editing, appA can see the updated document? Any help is appreciated.

• C#.NET Reload configuration settings from an external config file during run-time.

  I'm writing a game server in C#.Net and would like to reload or refresh settings from a config file while the server is running. Ideally I would like to save the settings in an XML file, have the ability to edit the file while the game server is running and then send the server the command to reload the settings from the file. I know I can use a database to do this as well, but the game server is fairly small and I think it would be more practical to just save settings in a flat-file. I will have file-level access to the machine the server will run on. What should I use?

• Is it possible to run node script from a web page as differnt user?

  I'am searching for days now but could not get an answer. I would like to do the following: User connects to editor.html (Apache2 with basic http auth) User want to open a file on the server with his user/pass (same as in passwd) Node.js Script gets startet with user rights from above and user can edit file The Node Script will handly the connection via websockets and read/writes files. I think the biggest problem is that its not possible to run a node script on the server from a web page... and I don´t want to involve any php/cgi scripts... only Apache and Node.js / JS. Please also comment or answer if you know that it is really not possible... Thanks! Kodak

• How to determine, upon launch, whether the app crashed the last time it quit?

  One of the crash reporter frameworks I've found does it like this: If there exist crash reports in the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter folder for the app, it determines that a crash occurred before. Then it allows the user to send the developer the crash log. And the finally, it deletes those logs. It is this deletion that is bothering me. It's not acceptable to me. Maybe the user wants to look at those logs later. It is simply rude to the user to just delete his crash logs. So I'm looking for a better way to determine the crash. It doesn't really work to store the last read crash logs in the user defaults or the user data, because that would mean that if the user deletes the data and defaults (which he has a right to do whenever he or she wishes), and then launches the app, it will be detected as crashed the last time it was quit. So this doesn't work. Any ideas?

My question is, which of the following type of data will be garbage collected (I'm pretty sure static fields can be garbage collected any time but I'm not sure about these): i) fields that are declared final or static final ii) intent and its data that I passed from activity A to activity B iii) onSavedInstanceState when orientation is changed during the app running I ask this because I want to ensure that my app won't crash when I restore activity B from background after a long period.

  Hi! I'm searched adobe and android developers sites, but can't find any details on this. Is it possible to use Flash as a part of my app? E.g. like a widget/GUI element? Or it's integrated in browser only and can't be simple accessible? I know, Adobe AIR apps are supported as standalone .apk. So it must be some API/SDK (from Google) to connect with Flash player. • Will Emacs --batch run in cron will hang when require user input?

  I have a job in crontab that requires emacs --batch but if the file is currently open it requests (s, p, q) to (steal, quit, etc...) which is fine if this file is being edited to not run the script but I want to make sure it kills the cron running script so it's not sitting in the background taking up memory. I have the output set to go to a log file so I can see this happening but no way to tell whether the script was terminated even though asked for user input. Does cron terminate these scripts and how to check the PID to make sure?

  I'm implementing a checking system in Ruby. It runs executables with different tests. If the solution is not correct, it can take forever for it to finish with certain hard tests. That's why I want to limit the execution time to 5 seconds. I'm using system() function to run executables: system("./solution"); .NET has a great WaitForExit() method, what about Ruby?. Is there a way to limit external process' execution time to 5 seconds? Thanks

  I'm a newb iPhone developer writing an app that has several large JPGs and sound files. Everything works ok if I drag these non-code resources into my project. But I am wondering if this is the right way to package my app. In Windows development, I would create a "resource DLL" that keeps the .exe size small. What is the equivalent for iPhone? • I can't find a DirectX installer to run from my installer.

  I tried this one. But it's the annoying one which asks you where to extract temp files, my users won't know what this means. I also tried the web installer, but you're not strictly allowed to use this. I don't really follow the windows setup stuff, but is there a single .EXE I am allowed to distribute and run, which just works (for DX 9.0C) with some command-line args? Or some other way, which can can described in idiot-proof steps and and called in one command-line argument from an installer script like Inno?

  I have a script written in Visual Basic that starts a process (given to the script as an argument) on a remote system (again, given as an argument) using WMI. This script works fine when using an Administrator account on the remote system, but when using a non-administrator account, I get the following error: ConnectServer Failed w/ (-2147024891) Access is denied. I'd like to be able to run processes on remote systems as a non-administrator user with this script, and I'm pretty sure the problem is due to security settings on the remote system, but I've not been able to reset the right ones.

I can get the class name, but I want the actual method that was just executed. • iPhone app getting XML then refreshing it at intervals...

  I have an app which gets some data from the web via an XML document. I have this working fine and have followed apples SeismicXML example (uses NSURLRequest etc). I am very new to this so I have to admit that I do not totally understand all the code that gets the XML - but it is working. My problem is that my app may be running for some time so I want to be able to refresh the XML every now and again and check to see if it is different. If it is different I need to update my contents. Basically this means my questions are.... Is there a standard way of doing this? I was thinking of creating a timer to call the function which parses the XML but I can't figure out which function to call. If anyone can give me any pointers or even better examples of this it would be fab. Thanks

  I have set up a local webserver using MAMP on ports 8888 for Apache and 8889 for MySQL - I am using this exclusively for Drupal 6 multisite. I would also like to have a local webserver using the native mac os x capabilities through ports 80 and 3306. Is it possible to run both MAMP local server and native osx webserver concurrently? I have tried to install php on my local server by editing the http.conf file but whenever I open a .php file (any php file) using Firefox I get an infinite loop of blank browser windows opening (FF) or in Safari the actual code of the php file is displayed rather than the php processed page. • Code compiles etc. but just hangs on run.

  Hey guys, My program is meant to parse through a text file, extract relevant data and then save it in a SQL table. I compile it like so.. gcc -o parse parse.c -I/usr/include/mysql -L/usr/lib/mysql -lmysqlclient_r then I run it like so... ./parse > tweets.rss But it just hangs. it doesn't print any printf's I put in to debug. • Is it OK to run an array with 22k strings in a PHP code on a shared web host?

A couple of days back I asked a question about a PHP code that matches the the query entered by users on my website to an array stored within the PHP code and displays the matched queries. Here is the code I'm talking about Now I've ended up with a rather large list (over 22k) of strings that have to be stored in the array. Is it ok to run it like this? I'm hosting the site on a shared hostgator package, will this cause my site to crash? I don't know too much about DBs but can I somehow store this on MySQL instead of having it in the code?

• How do I run Eclipse using Oracle's new 1.7 JDK for the Mac?

  I'm trying to get the new 1.7 JDK working with Eclipse (this is Oracle's official release). I don't mean just pointing Eclipse to it so you can use it in projects, this works fine, but actually making Eclipse run using the 1.7 JVM. I've moved the new JVM to the top of the list in Java Preferences, but Eclipse still starts with 1.6. If I disable 1.6 in Java Preferences I get a dialog immediately after I double-click on Eclipse saying "Failed to create the Java Virtual Machine". edit: I added the following to my eclipse.ini just before the -vmargs: -vm /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.7.0.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java Yet in the Eclipse installation details dialog I still see: java.runtime.version=1.6.0_31-b04-415-11M3646 edit 2: here are the contents of my eclipse.ini file: https://gist.github.com/2512578

  Hi everyone, I'm wondering if it's realistically possible to learn the iPhone SDK and complete an app by the end of this summer. The app shouldn't be too difficult, it would just interact with my site's API and essentially just fetch, create, and edit resources. I already have a little experience with the SDK (and I'm comfortable with Objective-C), so I'm not completely new to it. • Facebook Connect in iPhone app: Able to have two sessions?

  Does anyone know if you are able to have two sessions save in one iphone app? I don't mean two sessions active. I want to be able to let someone switch between facebook accounts in my app without having to logout and back in. To my understanding a sessions state is saved in user preferences and is resumed when you basically say [ session resume ]. What I'm wondering is if I can choose which session to resume based on the uid? If so then I can choose which session to resume. Thanks to all that reply.

• Why can't my C# app create files in Windows 7?

  I have a C# app that creates a settings file for itself to store the current state of certain visual elements. This app works just fine on any machine that isn't running Windows 7, but on those machines we get an error that the settings file can't be created because the user doesn't have permission. Now, I could fix this issue by going to each computer, logging in as the administrator and giving the user read and write access on the program folder for the application that we've installed, but there has to be a better way. It seems like in XP, you got write access on the folders you created by default, but that isn't the case anymore. Is there a setting I need in the setup package to make this work?
