  As requested by James McNellis I exported my Visual Studio color scheme and posted it here. It is basically the default Visual Studio color scheme with a dark background and slightly modified colors. Visual Studio 2010 Download: http://www.file-upload.net/download-2588083/Smooth-Dark.vssettings.html Installation: Select Tools > Import and Export Settings. Choose Import Selected Environment Settings. Select the file you downloaded. Import only the color settings. Click Finish. • Incorrect rendering in dojox charting stacked column?

  Hiya, I seem to be having a problem with my dojo stackedcolumn whereby the scale of some of the bars is correct for some x-axis points, but not others. • dateByAddingComponents problem and getting difference of dates with NSDateComponents problem!

  I am having problems with adding values to dates and also getting differences between dates. The dates and components calculated are incorrect. So for adding, if I add 1.5 months, I only get 1 month, however if I add any whole number ie (1 or 2 or 3 and etc) it calculates correctly. • Oracle JDBC intermittent Connection Issue

• Speed up bitstring/bit operations in Python?

  I wrote a prime number generator using Sieve of Eratosthenes and Python 3.1. The code runs correctly and gracefully at 0.32 seconds on ideone.com to generate prime numbers up to 1,000,000. # from bitstring import BitString def prime_numbers(limit=1000000): '''Prime number generator. ''' yield 2 sub_limit = int(limit**0.5) flags = [False, False] + [True] * (limit - 2) # flags = BitString(limit) # Step through all the odd numbers for i in range(3, limit, 2): if flags[i] is False: # if flags[i] is True: continue yield i # Exclude further multiples of the current prime number if i <= sub_limit: for j in range(i*3, limit, i<<1): flags[j] = False # flags[j] = True The problem is, I run out of memory when I try to generate numbers up to 1,000,000,000. flags = [False, False] + [True] * (limit - 2) MemoryError As you can imagine, allocating 1 billion boolean values (1 byte 4 or 8 bytes (see comment) each in Python) is really not feasible, so I looked into bitstring. I figured, using 1 bit for each flag would be much more memory-efficient. However, the program's performance dropped drastically - 24 seconds runtime, for prime number up to 1,000,000. This is probably due to the internal implementation of bitstring. You can comment/uncomment the three lines to see what I changed to use BitString, as the code snippet above. My question is, is there a way to speed up my program, with or without bitstring?

  I've recently read an interesting thread on the D newsgroup, which basically asks, Given two signed integers a ∈ [amin, amax], b ∈ [bmin, bmax], what is the tightest interval of a | b? I'm think if interval arithmetics can be applied on general bitwise operators (assuming infinite bits). The bitwise-NOT and shifts are trivial since they just corresponds to -1 − x and 2n x. But bitwise-AND/OR are a lot trickier, due to the mix of bitwise and arithmetic properties. Is there a polynomial-time algorithm to compute the intervals of bitwise-AND/OR? Note: Assume all bitwise operations run in linear time (of number of bits), and test/set a bit is constant time. The brute-force algorithm runs in exponential time. Because ~(a | b) = ~a & ~b and a ^ b = (a | b) & ~(a & b), solving the bitwise-AND and -NOT problem implies bitwise-OR and -XOR are done. Although the content of that thread suggests min{a | b} = max(amin, bmin), it is not the tightest bound. Just consider [2, 3] | [8, 9] = [10, 11].)

At work we are using MPTT to keep in hierarchal order a list of domains/subdomains however, I feel that there is an easier way to do it. I did some digging and someone did something similar but they required the use of a function in MySQL. I don't think for something simple like this we would need a whole function. Maybe I am just dumb and not seeing some sort of obvious solution. Also, feel free to alter the structure.

  Ok, here was my original question; Table one contains ID|Name 1 Mary 2 John Table two contains ID|Color 1 Red 1 Blue 2 Blue 2 Green 2 Black I want to end up with is ID|Name|Red|Blue|Green|Black 1 Mary Y Y 2 John Y Y Y It seems that because there are 11 unique values for color and 1000's upon 1000's of records in table one that there is no 'good' way to do this. So, two other questions. Is there an efficient way to query to get this result? I can then create a crosstab in my application to get the desired result. ID|Name|Color 1 Mary Red 1 Mary Blue 2 John Blue 2 John Green 2 John Black If I wanted to limit the number of records returned how could I do a query to do something like this? Where ((color='blue') AND (color<>'red' OR color<>'green')) So using the above example I would then get back ID|Name|Color 1 Mary Blue 2 John Blue 2 John Black I connect to Visual FoxPro tables via ADODB to use SQL. • 48-bit bitwise operations in Javascript?

  I've been given the task of porting Java's Java.util.Random() to JavaScript, and I've run across a huge performance hit/inaccuracy using bitwise operators in Javascript on sufficiently large numbers. Some cursory research states that "bitwise operators in JavaScript are inherently slow," because internally it appears that JavaScript will cast all of its double values into signed 32-bit integers to do the bitwise operations (see https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Core_JavaScript_1.5_Reference/Operators/Bitwise_Operators for more on this.) Because of this, I can't do a direct port of the Java random number generator, and I need to get the same numeric results as Java.util.Random(). Writing something like this.next = function(bits) { if (!bits) { bits = 48; } this.seed = (this.seed * 25214903917 + 11) & ((1 << 48) - 1); return this.seed >>> (48 - bits); }; (which is an almost-direct port of the Java.util.Random()) code won't work properly, since Javascript can't do bitwise operations on an integer that size.) I've figured out that I can just make a seedable random number generator in 32-bit space using the Lehmer algorithm, but the trick is that I need to get the same values as I would with Java.util.Random(). What should I do to make a faster, functional port?

• Best pattern for storing (product) attributes in SQL Server

  We are starting a new project where we need to store product and many product attributes in a database. The technology stack is MS SQL 2008 and Entity Framework 4.0 / LINQ for data access. The products (and Products Table) are pretty straightforward (a SKU, manufacturer, price, etc..). However there are also many attributes to store with each product (think industrial widgets). These may range from color to certification(s) to pipe size. Every product may have different attributes, and some may have multiples of the same attribute (Ex: Certifications). The current proposal is that we will basically have a name/value pair table with a FK back to the product ID in each row. An example of the attributes Table may look like this: ProdID AttributeName AttributeValue 123 Color Blue 123 FittingSize 1.25 123 Certification AS1111 123 Certification EE2212 123 Certification FM.3 456 Pipe 11 678 Color Red 999 Certification AE1111 ... Note: Attribute name would likely come from a lookup table or enum. So the main question here is: Is this the best pattern for doing something like this? How will the performance be? Queries will be based on a JOIN of the product and attributes table, and generally need many WHEREs to filter on specific attributes - the most common search will be to find a product based on a set of known/desired attributes. If anyone has any suggestions or a better pattern for this type of data, please let me know. Thanks! -Ed

  I'm trying to create an editable textbox via a drop down of selected values. Basically in Red Only mode I want the drop down to be a disabled textbox. It works fine when I do this with SelectedValue but when I need it to display the dropdown text and not the value.   I've got to write some code for a legacy application that is still running JDK 1.5. • FasterCSV Parsing issue?

  G'day guys, I'm currently using fastercsv to construct ActiveRecord elements and I can't for the life of me see this bug (tired), but for some reason when it creates, if in the rake file i output the column I want to save as the element value, it puts out correctly, as either a Trade or a Quote but when I try to save it into the activerecord, it won't work. • how to compile with llvm and g++?

  Hi, I use a fedora-11 system and recently I installed llvm ( sudo yum -y install llvm llvm-docs llvm-devel ). When I search for llvm I get them in /usr/bin. some of the links to the binaries are broken(llvm-gcc,llvm-g++,llvm-cpp,etc.) the include files are found within /usr/include/llvm and libs at /usr/lib/llvm. How to compile them using g++? I tried to compile the kaleidoscope code given in the tutorial (http://llvm.org/docs/tutorial/LangImpl3.html) as per directed, but it fails to compile.. Do you think this is an obvious equality? If yes, ignore all the above and just try to explain why. I could only start from the LHS, and after some algebra I think I proved it equals to the RHS. However I can't see how did he (or she) think of it in the first place.

• Using datetime float representation as primary key

  From my experience I have learn that using an surrogate INT data type column as primary key esp. an IDENTITY key column offers better performance than using GUID or char/varchar data type column as primary key. I try to use IDENTITY key as primary key wherever possible. But recently I came across a schema where the tables were horizontally partitioned and were managed via a Partitioned view. So the tables could not have an IDENTITY column since that would make the Partitioned View non updatable. One work around for this was to create a dummy 'keygenerator' table with an identity column to generate IDs for primary key. But this would mean having a 'keygenerator' table for each of the Partitioned View. My next thought was to use float as a primary key. The reason is the following key algorithm that I devised DECLARE @KEY FLOAT SET @KEY = CONVERT(FLOAT,GETDATE())/100000.0 SET @KEY = @EMP_ID + @KEY Heres how it works. CONVERT(FLOAT,GETDATE()) gives float representation of current datetime since internally all datetime are represented by SQL as a float value. CONVERT(FLOAT,GETDATE())/100000.0 converts the float representation into complete decimal value i.e. all digits are pushed to right side of ".". @KEY = @EMP_ID + @KEY adds the Employee ID which is an integer to this decimal value. The logic is that the Employee ID is guaranteed to be unique across sessions since an employee cannot connect to an application more than once at the same time. And for the same employee each time a key will be generated the current datetime will be unique. In all an unique key across all employee sessions and across time. So for Emp Ids 11 and 12, I have key values like 12.40046693321566357, 11.40046693542361111 But my concern whether float data type as primary key offer benefits compared to choosing GUID or char/varchar as primary keys. Also important thing is because of partitioning the float column is going to be part of a composite key.
