  • Which .NET exception to throw for invalid database state?

    I am writing some data access code and I want to check for potentially "invalid" data states in the database. For instance, I am returning a widget out of the database and I only expect one. If I get two, I want to throw an exception. Even though referential integrity should prevent this from occurring, I do not want to depend on the DBAs never changing the schema. I would like to use the System.IO.InvalidDataException, except that I am not dealing with a file stream so it would be misleading. I ended up going with a generic applicationexception. Anyone have a better idea?

I used code on http://www.doctrine-project.org/documentation/manual/1_2/ru/working-with-models#many-to-many-relations:deleting-a-link when I do the first method, it just deletes UserGroup record ONLY. How do I delete User, Group, and UserGroup records at once? The second and thrid methods do not work as well.

    I only would like to keep the Access Logs of the last n days created by Tomcat Access Log Valve. http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/config/valve.html#Access%20Log%20Valve But there seems to be no configuration-Attribute to define how long to keep the log-files? I guess this is because "Access Log Valve" only creates log files and doesn't delete them, is that correct?

  • How to dynamically change fields in an .NET ORM

    I'm working in ASP.NET in an application where often users want to add fields or change field names. I'd like to be able to have an xml schema in place that is parsed and a dynamic object model created from it that can be accessed throughout the application. My initial reaction is that this is not realistic. I think there is flexibility about the dynamic nature of it. I think the people I'm trying to build this for wouldn't mind recompiling. Even if the app recompiled, I don't know how to abstract away enough in my code access the data to allow for users changing property names, etc. How can you write LINQ when the properties might change? In short, there's two questions here: 1) is there a way to dynamically generate an object model of the database and 2) is there a way to abstract away enough so that code accessing the database doesn't break when properties change?

  • easy hex/float conversion

    I am doing some input/output between a c++ and a python program (only floating point values) python has a nice feature of converting floating point values to hex-numbers and back as you can see in this link: http://docs.python.org/library/stdtypes.html#additional-methods-on-float Is there an easy way in C++ to to something similar? and convert the python output back to C++ double/float? This way I would not have the problem of rounding errors when exchanging data between the two processes... thx for the answers!

  • How to remove duplicate records in a table?

    I've got a table in a testing DB that someone apparently got a little too trigger-happy on when running INSERT scripts to set it up. The schema looks like this: ID UNIQUEIDENTIFIER TYPE_INT SMALLINT SYSTEM_VALUE SMALLINT NAME VARCHAR MAPPED_VALUE VARCHAR It's supposed to have a few dozen rows. It has about 200,000, most of which are duplicates in which TYPE_INT, SYSTEM_VALUE, NAME and MAPPED_VALUE are all identical and ID is not. Now, I could probably make a script to clean this up that creates a temporary table in memory, uses INSERT .. SELECT DISTINCT to grab all the unique values, TRUNCATE the original table and then copy everything back. But is there a simpler way to do it, like a DELETE query with something special in the WHERE clause?

    Hi Masters, Good Day, I am new and very naive to Oracle DB. I am using Oracle 10G. Let me explain to you. I have one source database named ( DB1) and Target Database named (DB2). I have 2 schema's named dbs1 and dbs2 in the source database (DB1). I have exported both the database schemas in Source Database (DB1) and imported it successfully into the Target Database (DB2). Now I face a challenge in synchronizing these database schemas every time from Source DB (DB1) to Target DB (DB2). Can anyone please help in letting me know how can achieve this synchronization?     Hi all, I'm a very young software architect. Now I'm working in a very large and I have to lead a group of developers to rewrite all the mortgage system of the bank. I'm looking at database tables and I realize that there is no any data model, neither documentation. The worst part is that there are about 1000 tables in dev environment, and like 600 in production. I trust more the production environment, but anyway, what can I do? I mean, I can suicide me or something, but is there any good reverse engineering tool, so at least I could get the schema definition with the relations between tables and comments extracted from the fields?
