  • How to boot RHEL with no bash?

    - by nmelmun
How can I boot a RHEL VM if I deleted /bin/bash? When trying to boot, I now get the following error: "INIT: Cannot execute "/etc/rc/d/rc.sysinit" The next thing I tried was to modify the kernel boot parameters by adding init=/bin/ksh at the end of the line, which gave me a functional shell. After this, in order to get write permissions, I remounted the root partition with: mount -o remount,rw / Then I tried to boot using ksh as the shell by tricking the system into thinking it's bash: ln -s /bin/ksh /bin/bash Then restarted the system normally. Unfortunately this didnt work since ksh is not compatible and /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit uses several bash-specific tricks. Does anyone else have a suggestion on how I could get the system to boot normally without reinstalling bash?

  • How can I get Ubuntu 12.04 to boot on a Gigabyte 990Fx MB (efi problem?)

    - by Jeffrey
I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a home made system with a gigabyte 990Fxa MB. I can make it through the install process. It does not boot. Windows 7 does boot on the same machine. Suse 11.4 boots on the same machine. Suse 12.4 does not boot. I think there may be an issue with the EFI / GPT system. I know very little about these systems. I really expected the machine to boot. What can I do to get the system to boot? Please direct me to a path to trouble shoot this problem. thanks Jeffrey

  • MegaCli newly created disk doesn't appear under /dev/sdX

    - by Henry-Nicolas Tourneur
After having successfully added 2 new disks in a new RAID virtual drive (background initialization done), I would have exepected it to appear under /dev/sdh but it's not there (so, unusable). The system is running a CentOS 5.2 64 bits, HAL and udev daemons are running, not records of any sdh apparition under the messsage log file or in dmesg, only MegaCli do see that virtual drive. Any idea ? • On dual-boot iMac, after fixing "EFI Boot" issue, will booting Windows cause the same issue again?

    - by Shane
On my dual-boot iMac, after fixing the well-known "EFI Boot" issue, will booting Windows cause the same issue again? I'm hesitant to try booting Windows until I hear from others. Details: It all started when I had been working in Windows and then re-booted into Mac OSX Snow Leopard. Any attempt to boot into OSX would result in two giveaway symptoms: 1) The MAC HD was re-named "EFI Boot", and 2) a gray progress bar stopped at 10% and the spinning wheel kept spinning - no joy. Many articles on Mac Forums describe the same thing, including the fix, which is to erasing the damaged partition and either: a) re-install the OS from DVD, or b) perform a Time Machine RESTORE (which I did). Is there anything I can do to keep enjoying the benefits of a dual-boot iMac without fear of a repeat problem and associated 2-hour restore from Time Machine?

  • Cannot boot NixOS Install CD

    - by InFreefall
I am trying to install NixOS on an Acer laptop. When I try to boot off of the install CD, the system starts up and shows the Acer logo. Then, the boot menu of the CD appears, but it only displays on the top left corner of the screen. The rest of the screen still shows the Acer logo. If I try to select "boot" from the menu, that area of the screen goes black, and nothing else happens. I tried adding "nomodeset" to the boot arguments, but that did not affect anything. Are there any other boot arguments or anything else that could fix this?

  • Black screen white cursor and can't boot from live disc that I installed from just yesterday (Ubuntu 12.04)

    - by Luke
So, I've decided to change to Ubuntu from Windows 7 after reformatting. Install goes smoothly, I've set everything up, and it works for a day. It crashed when I had a full screen video, froze, so I rebooted, and now I can't get past the black screen with flashing white underscore cursor. If I wait a while, I get "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press any key" I've tried that, removed any boot options but the DVD drive, even tried my Windows 7 boot CD as well. Nothing boots, so I can't do anything. This is on an Asus A52N laptop, and all I can access now is the BIOS (version K52N 217), as far as I can tell.

  • grub2 update-grub puts wrong UUID in grub.cfg for system with separate /, /boot and /home partitions

    - by keepitsimpleengineer
It is putting in the UUID for the boot partition and not the / (root) partition. It's grub2 (1.99-21ubuntu3.1) on Xubuntu 12.04. UPDATE: ? I ran Boot Info Script 0.60, here are results? The boot info script is too big for askubuntu, but is here. The system not booting is on /dev/sdh. The booted disk, Xubuntu 12.04, is /dev/sdb. /sdh2/etc/fstab is at line 1073. The incorrect UUIDs are at line 945 and 954. "blkid" putput is at line 318. It is putting the UUID for "boot" versus "root" in boot.cfg, line 937. I have noticed that the relationship between physical drives and names in /dev vary depending on which system is booted.

  • When booting from grub2 menu, why does only the Primary OS that installed the boot loader get the nice splash?

    - by Matt
It isn't a real problem, but if there is a way to fix it, I would like to. I have several Ubuntu installations on one computer, but on boot and shutdown, only the primary installation that grub was installed to the MBR from has a nice resolution and boot splash. All the other installations boot splash's are a blinking cursor on a black screen, and the resolution is ugly, on boot as well as shutdown. Why is this? and Can I make it so that my Ubuntu 12.04 have a nice boot again, like my 12.10 now does (because its grub wrote over MBR)?

  • Windows boot manager and two hard disks

    - by Pincopallino
here's my situation: I had an HDD with Windows 8 installed (UEFI mode). I bought a SSD and wanted to do a clean install of Windows, so I thought that disabling the HDD and leaving the SSD as the only drive when installing was the right procedure to install the boot manager on the SSD. Unfortunately, after I plugged the HDD back in, the computer won't boot unless I select from the BIOS directly the SSD as the boot device. I guess the problem is that I have two Windows Boot Managers on two separate drives and they conflict. How would I solve this problem (excluding a format of the HDD, because I need to access data on the old Windows partition and, ideally, I would like to be able to boot that partition)?

  • Spring boot JAR as windows service

    - by roblovelock
I am trying to wrap a spring boot "uber JAR" with procrun. Running the following works as expected: java -jar my.jar I need my spring boot jar to automatically start on windows boot. The nicest solution for this would be to run the jar as a service (same as a standalone tomcat). When I try to run this I am getting "Commons Daemon procrun failed with exit value: 3" Looking at the spring-boot source it looks as if it uses a custom classloader: https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-boot/blob/master/spring-boot-tools/spring-boot-loader/src/main/java/org/springframework/boot/loader/JarLauncher.java I also get a "ClassNotFoundException" when trying to run my main method directly. java -cp my.jar my.MainClass Is there a method I can use to run my main method in a spring boot jar (not via JarLauncher)? Has anyone successfully integrated spring-boot with procrun? I am aware of http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.com/. However due to their licence I can't use it. UPDATE I have now managed to start the service using procrun. set SERVICE_NAME=MyService set BASE_DIR=C:\MyService\Path set PR_INSTALL=%BASE_DIR%prunsrv.exe REM Service log configuration set PR_LOGPREFIX=%SERVICE_NAME% set PR_LOGPATH=%BASE_DIR% set PR_STDOUTPUT=%BASE_DIR%stdout.txt set PR_STDERROR=%BASE_DIR%stderr.txt set PR_LOGLEVEL=Error REM Path to java installation set PR_JVM=auto set PR_CLASSPATH=%BASE_DIR%%SERVICE_NAME%.jar REM Startup configuration set PR_STARTUP=auto set PR_STARTIMAGE=c:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\java.exe set PR_STARTMODE=exe set PR_STARTPARAMS=-jar#%PR_CLASSPATH% REM Shutdown configuration set PR_STOPMODE=java set PR_STOPCLASS=TODO set PR_STOPMETHOD=stop REM JVM configuration set PR_JVMMS=64 set PR_JVMMX=256 REM Install service %PR_INSTALL% //IS//%SERVICE_NAME% I now just need to workout how to stop the service. I am thinking of doing someting with the spring-boot actuator shutdown JMX Bean. What happens when I stop the service at the moment is; windows fails to stop the service (but marks it as stopped), the service is still running (I can browse to localhost), There is no mention of the process in task manager (Not very good! unless I am being blind).

  • Ubuntu 10.04 and fedora 14 grub conflict

    - by sawren
I tried to triple boot Windows xp, Fedora 14 and Ubuntu 10.04. I first installed Windows xp, then fedora followed by Ubuntu. The problem is that i don't get option to boot Ubuntu while Xp boots fine. It seems Ubuntu was unable to replace Fedora's grub with its own at MBR. Looking at their grub conf file, Fedora and Ubuntu identifies same harddisk as two different devices and i do have another 80 GB harddisk which doesn't have any OS. Below is the details on my partitions and partial information from grub files of both OS. • Confirm disk is broken when it passes all diagnostics

    - by Halfgaar
I have a system with a potentially broken disk, but the disk passes all manner of diagnostics. I have been unable to confirm that the disk is broken. What are my options? I could just replace the disk, but because this situation is very similar to another more severe situation I have (long story), I'd like to actually make a proper diagnosis as opposed to randomly binning hardware. The issue and history is this: I had a Debian Linux PC (500 MHz P3) acting as router, nagios and munin. It crashed every couple of weeks. No logs or dmesg could be obtained (because it's an old Compaq that only boots when you configure it as keyboardless, making connecting a keyboard later, once it's booted, impossible). At the time, I just replaced the computer with another Compaq (P4 2.4 GHz) because I thought the hardware was faulty. However, it still crashed every couple of weeks. the difference is that on this computer, I can still SSH into it. It gives all kinds of errors on hda. I'd like to confirm that the disk is broken, but nothing I do confirms this: SMART error logs shows no errors. Normally when a disk starts acting up, SMART my pass, but it still records a read-error in the error log. SMART self-test (smartctl -t long /dev/sda) completes without errors. re-allocated sector count (a tell-tale parameter) has been 31 all its life, even when the disk was still in use in my desktop PC years ago, and it still is. The figure never changed. dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=4096 passes with flying colors. What else can I do to assess the health of the drive? Again, this is not about making this router fully functional again, this is a disk forensic question, because it just so happens that I have another server that potentially has the same problem, and knowing the answer to this will possibly help me greatly. For the record, below are logs and such. • Ubuntu 12.04 + Raid0 + Windows 7 not loading

    - by Douglas
please someone help me.... (Sorry for my english) Hi, I have a Pc with 2 Hd (1Tb each) on Raid0. I had a Windows 7 64bits working for several months. When I installed the Windows I let a 100Gb partition empty to install Ubuntu someday. I was using Linux on a Virtualbox, but this week I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 in this 100Gb partition. I used the Ubuntu alternate cd, because the 'normal' cd was giving me trouble with the Raid0. The grub installation always reported a error. After a lot of work I found that I nedded to install grub on partition /dev/mapper/isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid1 (see Bootinfo below). The Windows installation created a 100Mb boot partition, so I needed to install grub in this partition. Now I have the Ubuntu working 100% ok. The problem is, the Windows is not booting! The windows option is present on the grub menu, but when I choose the windows option there is a black screen and after that the grub is reloaded. My Bootinfo is: Boot Info Script 0.61 [1 April 2012] ============================= Boot Info Summary: =============================== => Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks at sector 1 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks in partition 1 for /boot/grub. => Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/mapper/isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid and looks at sector 1 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks in partition 1 for /boot/grub. sda1: __________________________________________________________________________ File system: Boot sector type: Unknown Boot sector info: Mounting failed: mount: unknown filesystem type '' sda2: __________________________________________________________________________ File system: Boot sector type: Unknown Boot sector info: Mounting failed: mount: unknown filesystem type '' mount: unknown filesystem type '' sda3: __________________________________________________________________________ File system: Extended Partition Boot sector type: Unknown Boot sector info: isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid1: ________________________________________________________ File system: ntfs Boot sector type: Grub2 (v1.99) Boot sector info: Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the boot sector of isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid1 and looks at sector 3841862992 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks for (,msdos5)/boot/grub on this drive. • Computer won't boot from a bootable DVD

    - by JohnB
My friend gave me his old computer that used to have WinXP on it. I'm trying to load Win7 on it and I thought there was something wrong because it wouldn't boot off a bootable disc, even though I setup the BIOS boot settings properly (I've done this sort of thing a million times). However, this closely related post helped me realize that I can boot off a bootable CD (WinXP), just not a DVD (Win7) Computer won’t boot from CD/DVD drive That might be the answer to my question, however, this motherboard is still pretty current technology. It's a good quality Gigabyte board, and judging from this product page, it came out in 2004. If I can't figure out a solution to my DVD boot problem, I'll have to try something like this: Boot and Install Windows from a USB thumb drive I guess it's possible that this motherboard doesn't allow booting from a DVD, but I still think that I might be missing something. It wouldn't be the DVD rom drive would it? I did try another drive and had the same results. However, I didn't try booting a DVD in the computer that the other test drive came out of, I'll do that later today. Any other advice? Thanks.

  • Sparc Solaris 2.6 will not boot

    - by joshxdr
I have a very old Sparc Solaris network that was working fine last week, but after a power outage none of the workstations will boot. The network looks like this: host A: solaris 2.6, shares /export/home to network by NFS host B: solaris 8, runs NIS server. Mounts /export/home/ by NFS. host C: RHEL5, shares /share to network by NFS. Mounts /export/home/ by NFS. I figured that the main problem was host A, since you need the home directories available for the other workstations to boot(?). Host A does not mount anything by NFS as far as I know. However, this workstation will NOT boot. The OBP bootup sequence looks like this: Boot device <blah> configuring network interface le0 Hostname <hostname> check file system <everything ok> check ufs filesystem <everything ok> NIS domainname is <name> starting router discovery starting rpc services: rpcbind keyserv ypbind done setting default interface for multicast: add net 224.0.0.0: gateway <hostname> <HANGS at this point> Is there some kind of debug mode so that I can get more detail as to why the workstation won't boot? Is my network structure inherently susceptible to power outage? Is there a way I can boot up to command line so I can at least turn off the NFS mounting?

  • Debian grub2 update removed Windows boot option.

    - by Wrikken
Since I updated grub to grub 2 I no longer get the option to boot to Windows (which is unfortunately sometimes necessary for proprietary MSIE browser plugins I need to use for work). Relevant /boot/grub/menu.lst portion: ### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST # This is a divider, added to separate the menu items below from the Debian # ones. title Other operating systems: root # This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for a non-linux OS # on /dev/hda1 title Windows NT/2000/XP root (hd0,0) savedefault makeactive chainloader +1 This however does not appear anymore. I do have some entries in /boot/grub/grub.cfg with entries like these: menuentry 'Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64' --class debian --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd1,msdos1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set e638c434-4884-412f-a141-2c194f881fae echo 'Loading Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 ...' linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-amd64 root=UUID=e638c434-4884-412f-a141-2c194f881fae ro quiet echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...' initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-5-amd64 } Do I have to alter that file? If so, what is the correct syntax for a Windows boot? If not, what could be the problem?

  • Will Windows repair my multi-boot when I format the 1st physical partition with boot sector?

    - by user2353806
Due to historical reasons I got a laptop with Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008R2 partitions. (boot from external wasn´t that viable) Nothing (Windows Repair, bootrec /whateveroption) worked when I restored only the Windows 7 and WS2k8 with Acronis TrueImage. Don´t ask me through what idiotic error messages I went during repair tries. (Wrong Windows version,...) So I grudgingly restored all three - with the little additional excursion that I thought changing the active partition to the Windows 7 partition would move the boot sector and let me format the Vista part... Oh no. Seems too logical for MS. (Dunno what I changed, but today it will let me format!) So the real question is: Will formatting the Vista part trash things again beyond comprehension or will Windows Repair bring back the boot rec and remove Vista from the boot options? Or should I just erase all the files to avoid trashing the boot? Where will the boot rec be (after repair) when I format the Vista? On 1st or 2nd partition? And if I get drunk and install Windows 8.1 on the 1st, will anything work? ;-) Thanks

(initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/sda2 on /isodevice failed: Invalid argument Could not find the ISO /ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso. This could also happen if the file system is not clean because of an operating system crash, an interrupted boot process, an improper shutdown, or unplugging of a removable device without first unmounting or ejecting it. To fix this, simply reboot into Windows, let it fully start, log in, run 'chkdsk /r', then gracefully shut down and reboot back into Windows. After this you should be able to reboot again and resume the installation. I cannot boot into Windows because I don't have a Windows partition. Do I have to install Windows to fix this problem? Is there a way to fix this in the (initramfs) prompt? Please help. Thank you!

  • I installed ubuntu, the installer told me to reboot afterwards. I dd, and now linux wont boot

    - by mandy
Im trying to dual boot between mac 10.6.8 and ubuntu 11.10. I have a macbook pro 8,1. So i installed from a 10.04 disk because the install window makes more sense to me, and it doesnt give me errors or anything. Also, any versions of ubuntu after that dont boot from disk for whatever reason. (i think its having to do with the efi boot thing. i have to get ubuntu 11.10 to boot from a usb with folders bootefiboot.iso) Then my plan after that was after the ubuntu 10.04 install took care of all the swap and stuff for me without being messy, to upgrade to 11.10. So here i have 10.04 booting successfully back and forth from mac osx no problem. I put in my 11.10 usb and the installer gives me the option to "update 10.04 to 11.10" bingo, jackpot, thats what i want. Everything proceeds as normal, as EVERY OTHER install of ubuntu i have ever done, then the installer finishes and says HEY! im finished! Continue testing or reboot now! So i reboot, and what do i get??? A black screen that says the file system isnt found, to enter a boot disk and press any key. WHAT THE HELL????? so i boot the 11.10 installer again from usb, and select "erase 11.10 and install 11.10", installer proceeds normally, and asks me to reboot. I reboot and get the SAME THING. Please, someone, help me get this right here. This is my first time actually dual booting between mac and linux. Usually i just wipe off osx completely and install ubuntu but i actually need to keep my mac partition this time. I have successfully installed 11.10 on this machine before, but that was when i did a clean install. Help?

  • Acronis Disk Director AFTER Clone Disk error: PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

    - by Kairan
Used Acronis Disk Director on my desktop, plugged in the laptop drive 240GB SSD (USB) and the new hard drive 500GB SSD (usb) and the copy seemed to be fine. I didnt see any error messages but I didnt stare at it for 3 hours either. The clone disk of course the Toshiba hidden restore partition, the primary partition C drive and the active (boot?) partition and yes, did check box for copy NT signature. The computer boots up fine most of the time, but it seems that when the computer goes to sleep (i believe its sleep, hard to do much testing during school) or hibernate or reboot it will sometimes display this message: Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.3.52 Copyright (C) 1997-2010, Intel Corporation PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready... Of course any key does nothing but repeat a similar method. However, if I press the power button on the laptop (Toshiba Portege R705, Win 7 Pro 64-bit) it puts computer into hibernate. After hibernating I press power button again and it comes out of hibernation without any odd messages or problems described above... so apparently that is my TEMP fix. Another recent issue I noticed is on occasion when creating a new folder or modifying something in the system variables, other random areas I will get a message: "The Stub received bad data" and simply retry the task and it works. Perhaps these two issues are linked.

  • rdisk value in boot.ini maps to which disk?

    - by MA1
Hi All Following are the contents of a sample boot.ini: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT rdisk value tells the physical disk number. so, if i have three hard disks say: /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc than how to know which disk(/dev/sda or /dev/sdb or /dev/sdc) is rdisk(0) and which disk is rdisk(1) etc Regards,

  • Cannot find root device after latest kernel upgrade

    - by DisgruntledGoat
I'm running Ubuntu 13.04. Yesterday I tried to install updates but there was an error, and it suggested running apt-get -f install which I did. Now when I try to boot, I get an error "Gave up waiting for root device". The text is almost identical to the text shown in this and this question. However, the "built-in shell" simply doesn't work! Nothing I type shows up on the screen or does anything. I tried adding a rootdelay to grub but it just waits longer and shows the same screen. Loading the previous kernel works (although there are a few graphics glitches) but as far as I can tell, it should be booting the exact same stuff. The new kernel is 3.8.0-31-generic and the previous working one is 3.8.0-25-generic. Here is my entire /boot/grub/menu.lst file, comments removed: default 0 timeout 3 title Ubuntu 13.04, kernel 3.8.0-31-generic uuid c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-31-generic root=UUID=c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac rootdelay=120 ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.8.0-31-generic quiet title Ubuntu 13.04, kernel 3.8.0-31-generic (recovery mode) uuid c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-31-generic root=UUID=c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac ro single initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.8.0-31-generic title Ubuntu 13.04, kernel 3.8.0-25-generic uuid c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-25-generic root=UUID=c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.8.0-25-generic quiet title Ubuntu 13.04, kernel 3.8.0-25-generic (recovery mode) uuid c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-25-generic root=UUID=c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac ro single initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.8.0-25-generic title Ubuntu 13.04, kernel 3.8.0-23-generic uuid c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-23-generic root=UUID=c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.8.0-23-generic quiet title Ubuntu 13.04, kernel 3.8.0-23-generic (recovery mode) uuid c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-23-generic root=UUID=c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac ro single initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.8.0-23-generic title Ubuntu 13.04, memtest86+ uuid c690c1e6-beb9-46e7-85c2-145cd07d44ac kernel /boot/memtest86+.bin quiet title -------------------------------- root title Windows Vista rootnoverify (hd0,2) savedefault makeactive chainloader +1 As you can see the UUID is the same for all kernels. • Simple VM That allows booting from folder or disk

    - by None
I was wondering if there was a very simple and free virtual machine that would allow you to boot from a folder or disk image that couldn't damage my hard disk. I am using a MacBook and am looking into operating system programming. I found a tutorial on the internet that looked promising (http://www.viralpatel.net/taj/tutorial/hello_world_bootloader.php). I want to try this but using a VM instead of actually booting from a disk. If I made a folder or disk image containing the boot.bin file and wanted to try the OS I made (while booting from a folder or disk image, not a disk), is there a VM that would let me do it? I have no previous experience with virtual machines. I also want to be sure my hard disk would not be damaged.

So far I have tried to ¨fixboot¨ and ¨chkdsk¨ from a recovery console on the affected windows partition (/dev/sda1), the plug off power cord for 15 seconds trick, reinstalling GRUB, repairing the MFT and boot sector of the affected partition via testdisk, what next please ? Thank you!
