  • Deleting large no of files on linux eats up CPU

    - by Sanjay
I generate more than 50GB of cache files on my RHEL server (and typical file size is 200kb so no of files is huge). When I try to delete these files it takes 8-10 hours. However, the bigger issue is that the system load goes to critical for these 8-10 hours. Is there anyway where I can keep the system load under control during the deletion. I tried using nice -n19 rm -rf * but that doesn't help in system load.

  • How do I force deletion of a file on Windows 7?

    - by thehawk90
Hello all. I opened a file using Vim from MinGW's MSYS on Windows 7, and it crashed, and it's left behind a .filename.swp file which I cannot delete! I'm in the local admin group, and I tried following this, in an administrator command propmpt, and that didn't work. Nor did logging on as the local admin and performing the same actions. Any suggestions?

  • How to delete everything except .svn directories?

    - by Arek
I have quite complex directory tree. There are many subdirectories, in those subdirectories beside other files and directories are ".svn" directories. Now, under linux I want to delete all files and directories except the .svn directories. I found many solutions about opposite behaviour - deleting all .svn directories in the tree. Can somebody quote me the correct answer for deleting everything except .svn?

  • Use unnamed object to invoke method or not?

    - by Chen OT
If I have a class with only only public method. When I use this class, is it good to use unnamed object to invoke its method? normal: TaxFileParser tax_parser(tax_file_name); auto content = tax_parser.get_content(); or unnamed object version: auto content = TaxFileParser(tax_file_name).get_content(); Because I've told that we should avoid temporary as possible. If tax_parser object is used only once, can I call it a temporary and try to eliminate it? Any suggestion will be helpful.

  • GestureListener's fling method doesn't get called

    - by nosferat
I'm using SimpleGestureDetector from the libgdx-users Wiki as my InputProcessor. I set it in the created() method: Gdx.input.setInputProcess(new SimpleDirectionGestureDetector(charController)); charController is my class which implements the DirectionListener interface defined in the SimpleDirectionGestureDetector class and it is responsible for moving the player character. However the character doesn't change direction when I'm performing a fling action in any direction. I've checked and the fling() method in the SimpleDirectionGesture class doesn't get called and I have no idea why, since everything seems good. What am I doing wrong?

  • How do I remove the Never-Ending Dropbox Folder?

    - by KronoS
I don't know if this is an error with eclipse or dropbox, but I seem to be unable to delete a file folder within my dropbox folder. Somehow, there was a creation of over 8300 file folders, all duplicates of the previous folder. I tried deleting from both command line, and explorer but get the same error: I've also deleted the share from the dropbox website, and it deleted correctly from there, but during the sync from the client (my pc) to the site there is an error: Any ideas of what to do?

  • Random directories in c:\ that I cannot delete

    - by chris
I just noticed a few directories in C:\ with long, random hex values. Each of these contains an update directory. When I click on the update directory, I get an access denied message, even though my account has admin privileges (XP Home). Two questions: How can I delete these folders, and how is it possible to restrict a folder this way?

  • Class design for calling "the same method" on different classes from one place

    - by betatester07
Let me introduce my situation: I have Java EE application and in one package, I want to have classes which will act primarily as cache for some data from database, for example: class that will hold all articles for our website class that will hold all categories etc. Every class should have some update() method, which will update data for that class from database and also some other methods for data manipulation specific for that data type. Now, I would like to call update() method for all class instances (there will be exactly one class instance for every class) from one place. What is the best design?

  • Delete a windows group in Active Directory

    - by Jim
I am doing a cleanup of some AD groups that are no longer used. One of the AD groups I could not delete because it seems that a member has this group set as the primary group (which I assume someone did by accident). Is there an easy way to find out who has this group set as primary?

  • How to ensure that a member variable is initialized before calling a class method

    - by Omkar Ekbote
There's a class with a parametrized constructor that initializes a member variable. All public methods of the class then use this member variable to do something. I want to ensure that the caller always creates an object using the parametrized constructor (there is also a setter for this member variable) and then call that object's methods. In essence, it should be impossible for the caller to call any method without setting a value to the member variable (either by using the parametrized constructor or the setter). Currently, a caller can simply make an object using the default constructor and then call that object's method - I want to avoid checking whether or not the member variable is set in each and every one of the 20-odd methods of the class (and throw an exception if it is not). Though a runtime solution is acceptable (better than the one I mentioned above); a compile-time solution is preferable so that any developer will not be allowed to make that mistake and then waste hours debuggging it!

  • What is hiberfil.sys and How Do I Delete It?

    - by The Geek
You’re no doubt reading this article because there’s a gigantic hiberfil.sys file sitting in the root of your drive, and you want to get rid of it to free up some space… but you can’t! Luckily, you actually can delete it, and today we’ll show you how. The more memory you have in your PC, the bigger the file will be. So What is hiberfil.sys Anyway? Windows has two power management modes that you can choose from: one is Sleep Mode, which keeps the PC running in a low power state so you can almost instantly get back to what you were working on. The other is Hibernate mode, which completely writes the memory out to the hard drive, and then powers the PC down entirely, so you can even take the battery out, put it back in, start back up, and be right back where you were. Hibernate mode uses the hiberfil.sys file to store the the current state (memory) of the PC, and since it’s managed by Windows, you can’t delete the file. So if you never use it, and want to disable Hibernate mode, keep reading. Personally I stick with Sleep Mode the vast majority of the time, but I do use Hibernate quite often. Disable Hibernate (and Delete hiberfil.sys) in Windows 7 or Vista You’ll need to open an administrator mode command prompt by right-clicking on the command prompt in the start menu, and then choosing Run as Administrator. Once you’re there, type in the following command: powercfg -h off You should immediately notice that the Hibernate option is gone from the Shut down menu. You’ll also notice that the file is magically gone! For more about dealing with Hibernate like setting how long it takes to head into Hibernate mode, you can check out our article on How to Manage Hibernate Mode in Windows 7. Disabling Hibernate Mode in Windows XP It’s a lot easier in Windows XP to get rid of Hibernate mode… in fact, we’ve already covered it before, but we’ll cover it again. Just head into Control Panel –> Power Options, and then find the Hibernate tab. Uncheck the box, reboot your PC, and then you can delete the hiberfil.sys file. • [Notepad++] delete rest of line after specific string

    - by nixdagibts
I'm looking for a way to search for a specific string e.g. '=UUID:' and delete it and all following characters per line. I would prefer a way/macro/addon for notepad++. But all other tools or scripts are welcome :) Before ://81.88.22.6/=UUID:63969B2469B7A94EBBDBD7CB5B9C00BA ://-ad.cgi*=UUID:3C8EFF48B674CC42BF5B6E2B7BA820E7 ://-ads/*=UUID:0D6CF7D5BE3F034C8A136CC99A074406 Note that the numbers are always different per line so you couldn't do a search 'n replace with them. Should look like this after ://81.88.22.6/ ://-ad.cgi* ://-ads/*

  • recursively delete empty directories in windows

    - by mohlsen
I have a directory on my Windows 7 machine that has hundreds if not thousands of sub-directories. Some of them have files, some do not. I want to delete all the empty directories. Looking at the del and rmdir DOS command, it does not look like you can recursively do this without deleting all the files. Is there a way to do this from the command line? Or is there a tool that would do it for me?

  • Delete data from a MSSQL standby database?

    - by SQL-Newbie
Is it possible to delete data from a read only standby database that imports shipped log files? At least in my theory this shouldn't be possible because the deletion would change the LSN and the log shipping should break. What I need is a smaller sized database than the database that ships the logs. So basically I need a way to have the (readonly) standby server storing only the most recent data. Any ideas or recommendations on this?

  • Make a batch file find duplicate file names with different extensions, and actions on the results

    - by Bringo
What I want to do is have a batch file search folders, and subfolders, for matching file names that are ending in .mp3 and .wma and delete or move the *.wma duplicates. Below you'll find what I have come up with until now, I know it is wrong for at least two reasons. I have searched the internet, and tried a number of things, but now I am stuck. Can anyone please help me with this? for /r %%f in "(%userprofile%\my music\* - ?.*)" do del "%%f" /s/p

  • rsync delete remote duplicates

    - by BlakBat
I'm trying to delete remote duplicate files without transferring the non-existing files, and without updating the existing files. If I specify both --existing and --ignore-existing (along with "-av --remove-source-files", the operation is a no-op and nothing will be transfered, but nothing will be deleted either. The best I got so far is to make a local copy of destination, use rsync without --ignore-existing, then rsync my local copy on top of the destination

  • MySQL reclaim index space after large delete?

    - by cdunn
After performing a large delete in MySQL, I understand you need to run a NULL ALTER to reclaim disk space, is this also true for reclaiming index space? We have tables using 10G of index space and have deleted/archived large chunks of this data and unsure if we need to rebuild the table in order to decrease the size of the index. Can anyone offer any advice? We are trying to avoid rebuilding the table since it would take quite awhile and lock the table. Thanks!
