  • Where to put files that will be read in a Rails app?

    - by Guilherme
I'm developing a Rails application and within that application I developed a Rake task that will read entries from a file and store them into the DB. Producing the code was no problem, but I'd like to know, where do I place the file that is read? Is there a convention for that, if yes, what is it? I know I could have used the seed.rb file but is it ok, by the standards, to load and read a file from there? Thanks in advance!

  • Is it safe to put reference to current user in User model in Rails?

    - by Art Shayderov
You know, I think I have to check current user in the model callbacks (like before_update). Rather than rely solely on adding where ('something.user_id = ?', 'current_user.id') in the controllers. I need something like Thread.CurrentPrincipal in .NET Is it safe to put reference to current user in User model? I'm sorry I don't really understand how it works under the hood yet. Or how you do it The Rails way? Sorry if this a silly question.

  • Rails - Any plugins for building a online quiz/test?

    - by ChrisWesAllen
Hello guys, I'm trying to add some online tests to my site and before I rolled up my sleeves I was wondering if there is any ruby on rails plugin support for such a task. Essentially I'm looking for something that lets me add multiple choice questions. Performing the scoring logic would be an added bonus. Any one know of anything?

  • Why does Rails with Passenger/nginx only works in development mode? No logs available

    - by Michael W.
    Hey folks, I have a serious problem with one of our webservers... after having an internal alpha-testing with a mongrel/haproxy-cluster that worked well, we wanted to use nginx with passenger for our first production server (customers will access this server). However, I can only run the rails app via development mode with passenger/nginx. The app itself runs perfect with mongrel or webrick in production mode. My biggest problem with this case is that I don't find ANY information in the nginx or rails-logs (only when I use mongrel or webrick). Permissions are correct. Passenger-status shows that the app is running, but I always get the static 500.html-error page... It would be so nice if you guys could give me a hint and help me solve the problem. I put the config at the bottom of the post... This exact config works with rails_env development;but I'd like to use the production mode ;-) Thank you very much for your help! Version: Ubuntu 8.04.2 64bit / nginx-0.7.64 (compiled and installed via passenger-2.2.11) cat /opt/nginx/conf/nginx.conf user www-data; worker_processes 4; error_log logs/error.log; #pid logs/nginx.pid; events { worker_connections 1024; } http { passenger_root /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/passenger-2.2.11; passenger_ruby /usr/bin/ruby1.8; passenger_log_level 3; include mime.types; default_type application/octet-stream; #log_format main '$remote_addr - $remote_user [$time_local] "$request" ' # '$status $body_bytes_sent "$http_referer" ' # '"$http_user_agent" "$http_x_forwarded_for"'; access_log logs/access.log; sendfile on; #tcp_nopush on; #keepalive_timeout 0; keepalive_timeout 65; #gzip on; server { listen 80; server_name <<servername>>; root /srv/app01/public; passenger_enabled on; }

  • How do I merge a transient entity with a session using Castle ActiveRecordMediator?

    - by Daniel T.
I have a Store and a Product entity: public class Store { public Guid Id { get; set; } public int Version { get; set; } public ISet<Product> Products { get; set; } } public class Product { public Guid Id { get; set; } public int Version { get; set; } public Store ParentStore { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } } In other words, I have a Store that can contain multiple Products in a bidirectional one-to-many relationship. I'm sending data back and forth between a web browser and a web service. The following steps emulates the communication between the two, using session-per-request. I first save a new instance of a Store: using (new SessionScope()) { // this is data from the browser var store = new Store { Id = Guid.Empty }; ActiveRecordMediator.SaveAndFlush(store); } Then I grab the store out of the DB, add a new product to it, and then save it: using (new SessionScope()) { // this is data from the browser var product = new Product { Id = Guid.Empty, Name = "Apples" }); var store = ActiveRecordLinq.AsQueryable<Store>().First(); store.Products.Add(product); ActiveRecordMediator.SaveAndFlush(store); } Up to this point, everything works well. Now I want to update the Product I just saved: using (new SessionScope()) { // data from browser var product = new Product { Id = Guid.Empty, Version = 1, Name = "Grapes" }; var store = ActiveRecordLinq.AsQueryable<Store>().First(); store.Products.Add(product); // throws exception on this call ActiveRecordMediator.SaveAndFlush(store); } When I try to update the product, I get the following exception: a different object with the same identifier value was already associated with the session: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000, of entity:Product" As I understand it, the problem is that when I get the Store out of the database, it also gets the Product that's associated with it. Both entities are persistent. Then I tried to save a transient Product (the one that has the updated info from the browser) that has the same ID as the one that's already associated with the session, and an exception is thrown. However, I don't know how to get around this problem. If I could get access to a NHibernate.ISession, I could call ISession.Merge() on it, but it doesn't look like ActiveRecordMediator has anything similar (SaveCopy threw the same exception). Does anyone know the solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Rails ActiveRecord BigNum to JSON

    - by Jon Hoffman
Hi, I am serializing an ActiveRecord model in rails 2.3.2 to_json and have noticed that BigNum values are serialized to JSON without quotes, however, javascript uses 64 bits to represent large numbers and only ~52(?) of those bits are available for the integer part, the rest are for the exponent. So my 17 digit numbers become rounded off, grrr. Try the following in the Firebug console: console.log(123456789012345678) So, I'm thinking that the json encoder should be smart enough to quote numbers that are too big for the javascript engines to handle. How do I fix up rails to do that? Or, is there a way to override the encoding for a single property on the model (I don't want to_s elsewhere)? Thanks.

  • RoR associations through or not through?

    - by showFocus
I have four models that are related to one another, the way I have it setup at the moment is I have to select a county, region and country when entering a new city. class Country < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :regions has_many :counties has_many :cities end class Region < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :country has_many :counties has_many :cities end class County < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :country has_one :region has_many :cities end class City < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :country has_one :region has_one :county end Would it be better to use the :through symbol in the association? So I could say the city: has_one :country, :through => :region Not sure if this is correct, I have read how :through works but I'm not sure if this is the best solution. I am a newbie and while I'm not struggling with the syntax and how things work, it would be good to get opinions on best practices and the way things should be done from some rails wizards! Thanks in advance.

  • How to define one-to-many connection between a same model through another model

    - by Mekajiki
I want to define one-to-many relationship as follows; User has one introducer User has many newcomers(who is introduced by the user) Use "Introduction" model instead of adding a column to users table. My table and model definition is as follows; DB Scheme: create_table "introductions", force: true do |t| t.integer "introducer_id" t.integer "newcomer_id" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" User model: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :introductions, foreign_key: :introducer_id has_many :newcomers, through: :introductions, source: :newcomer belongs_to :introduction, foreign_key: :newcomer_id belongs_to :introducer end Introduction model: class Introduction < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :introducer, class_name: 'User' belongs_to :newcomer, class_name: 'User' end This works fine: user1.newcomers.push user2 but, user2.introducer # => nil How can I define belongs_to relationship correctly?

  • Cucumber-rails on jruby installs gem into my apps root directory with bundler

    - by brad
Just installed cucumber 0.7.2 and cucumber-rails 0.3.1 with jruby-1.4.0 on OSX. When I run a bundle install, it places a cucumber-rails directory in my main app with all of the gem code/dependencies. First off, this is definitely not what I want and I'm not sure why this happens for cucumber-rails only. Second, if I delete this folder and just manually install cucumber-rails, when I run script/generate feature blah I get /Users/bradrobertson/.rvm/rubies/jruby-1.4.0/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/source_index.rb:344:in `refresh!': source index not created from disk (RuntimeError) from /Users/bradrobertson/.rvm/gems/jruby-1.4.0/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/rails/vendor_gem_source_index.rb:34:in `refresh!' from /Users/bradrobertson/.rvm/gems/jruby-1.4.0/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/rails/vendor_gem_source_index.rb:29:in `initialize' from /Users/bradrobertson/.rvm/gems/jruby-1.4.0/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/rails/gem_dependency.rb:21:in `new' from /Users/bradrobertson/.rvm/gems/jruby-1.4.0/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/rails/gem_dependency.rb:21:in `add_frozen_gem_path' from /Users/bradrobertson/.rvm/gems/jruby-1.4.0/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/initializer.rb:298:in `add_gem_load_paths' from /Users/bradrobertson/.rvm/gems/jruby-1.4.0/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/initializer.rb:132:in `process' from /Users/bradrobertson/.rvm/gems/jruby-1.4.0/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/initializer.rb:113:in `run' from /Users/bradrobertson/Repos/app/source/trunk/config/environment.rb:13 from /Users/bradrobertson/Repos/app/source/trunk/config/environment.rb:1:in `require' from /Users/bradrobertson/.rvm/gems/jruby-1.4.0/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/commands/generate.rb:1 from /Users/bradrobertson/.rvm/gems/jruby-1.4.0/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/commands/generate.rb:3:in `require' from script/generate:3 Similarly running rake cucumber I get rake aborted! source index not created from disk So something obviously doesn't work. • Active record taking Date.today as yesterday

    - by Mongus Pong
I have a strange one.. I am doing something like : tip = find (:first, :conditions => ["last_shown = ? or last_shown is null", Date.today]) And then a little later on I do : tip.last_shown = Date.today tip.save When I look at output of these queries, ActiveRecord is doing the first query with todays date as I would expect. However, the send query, ActiveRecord is setting the last_shown date to be yesterdays date. Why on earth would it do this? I have config.time_zone = 'UTC' in my environment.rb. I can use Time.now.utc.to_date instead of Date.today but it makes no difference.

  • Rails: translate ActiveRecord error template headers for a single model

Hi, I'm trying to rename the authlogic error messages in a Rails 3 app. The general format I found out working in Rails 3: de: errors: template: header: one: "Konnte {{model}} nicht speichern: ein Fehler." other: "Konnte {{model}} nicht speichern: {{count}} Fehler." body: "Bitte überprüfen Sie die folgenden Felder: But I want to change this for the authlogic user session model (and only for this one) because when the Login fails, the message "Could not save user session" does not make very much sense. How can I do that?

  • Setting many key/value pairs

    - by Andrew
Hi, I'm working on a rake task which imports from a JSON feed into an ActiveRecord called Person. Person has quite a few attributes and rather than write lines of code for setting each attribute I'm trying different methods. The closest I've got is shown below. This works nicely as far as outputing to screen but when I check the values have actually been set on the ActiveRecord itself it's always nil. So it looks like I can't use .to_sym to solve my problem? Any suggestions? I should also mention that I'm just starting out with Ruby, have been doing quite a bit of Objective-c and now need to embrace the Interwebs :) http = Net::HTTP.new(url.host, url.port) http.read_timeout = 30 json = http.get(url.to_s).body parsed = JSON.parse(json) if parsed.has_key? 'code' updatePerson = Person.find_or_initialize_by_code(parsed['code']) puts updatePerson.code parsed.each do |key, value| puts "#{key} is #{value}" symkey = key.to_sym updatePerson[:symkey] = value.to_s updatePerson.save puts "#{key}....." # shows the current key puts updatePerson[:symkey] # shows the correct value puts updatePerson.first_name # a sample key, it's returning nil end

If you assign an invalid date (like December 39th) to a datetime column ActiveRecord returns a "can't be blank" error when is should probably return an error like "Not a valid date" My question. • How can I get a set of radio buttons to accept NULL (nothing checked)?

    - by Ethan
I'm working on a Rails application where I have some a set of two radio buttons where users can click "yes" or "no". The MySQL DB column created by the ActiveRecord migration is a tinyint. If the user doesn't click either radio button I want MySQL to store NULL. (The column allows NULL.) And when they come back to edit the data, neither button should be checked. What's happening is that ActiveRecord is storing 0 and then when I come back the "No" button is checked. Rails 2.3.5 Form code (I'm using Haml): = f.radio_button( :model_attribute, true ) Yes = f.radio_button( :model_attribute, false ) No (In retrospect it probably would have been better to use a single checkbox, but it would be difficult to change that now.)
