• Need help recovering a corrupt SQL database

  I have a very special case that I have been working on for several days. I have a very large SQL Server 2008 database (about 2 TB) that contains 500 filegroups to support very large partitioned tables. Recently we had a catastophic failure on one of the drive and lost several filegroups and the database became in-accessible. We have been doing filegroup backups on a daily basis, but due to other issues, we lost our most recent backup of the log and the primary filegroup. We have all the data backed up but the primary filegroup backup is old. There have been no schema changes since the primary filegroup backup, but the lsn's are now all out of sync and we cannot recover the data. I have tried everything I could think of (and have tried just about every trick and hack I could google) but I still end up at the same point where I get messages saying that the files for filegroup x do not match the primary filegroup. I am now at the point of trying to edit the system tables (we have a separate temporary environment to do this so we are not worried about corrupting any production databases). I have tried updated sys.sysdbreg, sys.sysbrickfiles, and sys.sysprufiles to try to trick SQL into thinking all the files are online, but a "Select * From OPENROWSET(TABLE DBPROP, 5)" shows a different database state from what I see in sys.sysdbreg. I am now thinking I need to somehow edit the headers of the actual data files to try to line up the lsn's with the primary. I appreciate any help anyone can give me here, but please do not respond with things like "you are not supposed to do edit mdf, ndf files...." or "see msdn article....", etc. This is an advanced emergency case and I need a real hack so we can just get to the data in this corrupt database and export to a fresh new database. I know there is a way to do this, but not knowing what the DBPROP system functions does (i.e. does it look at system tables or does it actually open the file) is keeping me from trying to figure out how to fool SQL into allowing me to read these files. • Is there a good, free way to fix broken/corrupt .wmv files?

  I've recovered some files from an hdd that weren't supposed to be deleted in the first place, but they have seeking problems/crash the players. Since they have the right size, I'm thinking it might be a problem of corrupt index/header, so I'm trying to find a way to fix them. It's easy to find examples on how to fix corrupt .avi files with mencoder, but .wmv seems trickier. Also, I realize there might not be a way to fix these files, but I figure I might as well as try. As far as players go, I've tried opening it with vlc/mplayer/windows media player. I can use anything on Windows XP/7 and Ubuntu, as long as it's free. Since the files are 200mb+ and there are quite a few, I don't think trial software would work.

• Safely reboot prior to recovering data

  What is the safest (without additional writing to the disk) way to power down computer whose deleted files you want to recover in order to boot from rescue medium? In case of a desktop computer, plugging off the power cord looks like the most direct solution, but are there possible side-effects, apart from losing unsaved data? More problematic seems the laptop, with removing the battery being the equivalent, but is it a good idea overall?

  I recently bought a new ADATA external Classic hard drive 500GB. I have transferred around 29GB of data on it till I install my new windows 7 operating system. After some work with the hard drive (copying / deleting ... files) . I closed it for some reason and it couldn't open again asking me to format. I don't want to format the hard drive, I have important data I need...Is there a way I can retrieve my data. Is Recover My Files program from GetData a right choice??? part 2 of my question: why might such thing happen (require format to open), is it the hard drive problem or is it just a corrupted file or folder...??? • Help in recovering partition

  Okay so i had one NTFS partition and i wanted to resize it, but while resizing it with partition magic some error occurred and now i am not able to enter in my partition anymore. I have slackware 13 also and i tried mounting the partition from there but it didn't succeed. One friend of mine came to my house with some live-cd os called backtrack3 and when he booted from cd, he was able to mount the damaged partition - and was able to read/write on it anywhere. I saw my files, they are all there, so nothing's erased just the partition is somehow damaged. But strange thing was that from backtrack we weren't able to mount some of the working partitions of my comp, and we could mount the damaged one. So i am asking for some help here: My files are all there, and i saw them from backtrack. What can i do to fix the partition so it would be usable from windows/slackware again ? Please tell me anything you've got because i have some important data on it. Thank you.

  Possible Duplicate: Chrome: where is the location to save browse temporary files Ok, so here's what happened - and yes, it was pretty stupid by me: I wrote up and submitted a post on Stack Overflow It was not suited to be placed on Stack Overflow as someone pointed out to me, so I deleted the post (this was a few hours ago) I copied the text into a new question page on Super User, but didn't submit it yet I accidentally just refreshed the webpage that had the text, and the question has now been deleted from Stack Overflow I have Lazarus installed, however the Chrome version doesn't have many features and the text was not recoverable from there. I do not have a clipboard manager, but the text was copied to my clipboard - so is there any way to get this back (Windows 7)? Although the post on Stack Overflow was deleted, I suppose it would have existed in my cache - could I recover it from there? Would the post on Stack Overflow exist in an rss feed anywhere? Many thanks, and I hope I can find this - and I am sure that the solution will prove valuable for me (and others) in the not too distant future once again.

• 'No volume found' on Windows 7 VM (VHD), can I get anything back?

  The worst possible situation... Despite my vigilence doing backups, and trying to keep my PC secure, one of my VMs disk seems to be wiped out. Using the VHD tool from R1Soft (HyperV VHD Explorer), when I attach the VHD, it says no volumes found so it looks like something wiped out the VHD (which it still its original size). It seems that something has sneaked through whatever security I have/had and has wreaked havoc. Can I recover anything from this?

• Unable to connect to SQL Database (can the password be reset)

  I have recently joined a company which has an SQL 2005 Server running a few databases. The server looks like no one has touched it in a couple of years and has this week it ran out of disk space. After a quick hard drive scan it looks like some of the databases have become a little bloated and particularly the Sharepoint_config~*~_log and WSS_Content_log.ldf have grown to about 15GB. I have been able to log into a couple of the other databases and use the shrinkfile command to free up disk space but for some reason I am unable to log into the sharepoint and Microsoft#SSEE databases (which gives me the "cannot connect to Sharepoint, a network related or instance specific error occurred..." when I try and connect) I can see that the database is running via the SQL surface configuration and I have made sure that the remote connection settings allow me to connect locally but I am still unable to log in either with windows authentication or locally. Is there any way to reset or recover the database login details so I can get in? ( I have tried logging in with all the administrative passwords I can find and after tracking down the company who installed it in the first place I found out that they have no idea what the password could have been)

  Hi. Here is my problem. I have OpenSuse installed alongside Windows 7. Grub is the boot loader from where I access OpenSuse and Windows 7. I want to delete Grub and also the OpenSuse partitions. My first, failed, approach was to insert the Win7 DVD, choose Repair your computer and then enter the commmand prompt. I then typed "bootrec /fixmbr" and restarted. It didn't worked. Grub was still there, so was Windows7. I then tried using "bootrec /fixboot and /rebuildbcd and neither worked. So what can I do to fix this? I remember when I was using WinXP this was much simpler. I would just type fixmbr and that was it. Any clues? Thank you.

• Recovering data from a Silicon Image SiI3114 RAID

  I have a set of 3 disks in RAID 5 originally created with a Silicon Image SiI3114 on-board RAID controller. The old motherboard is dead. The new motherboard (which has a different raid controller) won't boot from the array. I have no reason to believe that the drives are damaged or corrupted. I'm 99% sure that the problem is that the new controller isn't compatible or I'm not setting it up properly. Is it possible to recover data from the drives using a different controller? Would a PCI card like this one allow me to read from the array again?

  I executed the following command from a Ubuntu live cd terminal (dont ask why). dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb2 bs=512 count=1 Where sdb2 is a NTFS partition (third partition) on a disk. Suffice to say it is now messed up. When I boot into windows 7, it does show me E drive but when I click on it it asks me to format it. I am not ever sure what I did, did I mess up partition table or only the MFT? Is there any way to get the data back PLEASE HELP! this is very important :(

Ok, I tried to make its image with dd. I/O error as soon as it starts. I have installed ddrescue, but its manual page says not to use it with drives, failing on I/O. Can I manage to get some information from this drive and how to do this?

• Ubuntu loading stops ?

  I don't know why, or how... but my ubuntu's loading / booting stops right after the ubuntu logo appearing.. An underscore appears in the right top of the screen: _ then, it disappears leaving the whole screen black Version is 9.10 ,Kernel is .20 I have tryed recovering mode and selected recover damaged packages option, but it didn't do any good.. I have very important files in Ubuntu that I need to copy to a pen drive or something, today.. The terminal mode is working, so i think i can do this there.. My questions: How can I get my Ubuntu to load? Is it possible to copy the files i need via terminal mode? I dont know if with other of the previous kernels it would work... but I had configured my grub (inside Ubuntu's gui) to show only the last kernel... and now i can't select any other kernel then .20 because I don't know a way to configure Grub unless via Ubuntu's gui... My hardware: ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 HD P7450 2.13Ghz Core duo 4Gb DDR2

• HDD dead forever???

  Yesterday I turned on my computer and it couldn't boot. I found out the hd (320GB SATA Seagate Momentus 7200.3 for notebook) was broken, it couldn't be recognized by the BIOS. I have another of the same hd, so I exchanged the boards. I found out that there is a problem on its board since my good hd didn't work. But the broken hd doesn't work with the good board as well: it can be recognized but when I insert a Windows Instalation DVD it says the hd is 0GB. I put it in a case and use it in another computer via USB, and but it doesn't show up in the "My Computer". I used a software to recover files called "GetDataBack for NTFS", it recognized the hd but with the wrong size (2TB). I try to make it read the hd but it get an I/O error reading sector. It tries to read, the hd spins... So, since I'm using a good board on it, the problem seems to be internal. Is there anything someone could do recover the files from it?

• I overwrote a large file with a blank one on a linux server. Can I recover the existing file?

  I came back to my machine, tried saving a file over ssh onto my linux server (CentOS). It failed. I wasn't interested in keeping any changes I had made so I closed my editor and reopened the file (over ssh). The save attempt wiped the file. I have made loads of changes to it since I last uploaded to revision control. Seeing as it has just wiped the file I assume the data is still there. It's just a text file (php), is there any way of recovering it?

• Is there a way to undo deletion of registry keys while the machine is still running?

  [ also posted from a programmer's POV at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3299230 ] I messed up big time and deleted a large portion of my registry during a programming experiment: As a result most of the contents of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ are gone. I haven't logged off or shutdown since this happened. The applications that were already running seem to be coping fine so far but I suspect that after the next reboot there won't be much happiness left... Also, System Restore tells me there are no restore points even though I'm pretty sure there should have been. Could this be another symptom of the purged registry? I wouldn't have expected this information to be stored under HKCU, though... Does anybody know of a technique or utility that can possibly restore some or all of the deleted entries? I'm on Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit. I'm not really holding my breath but you can always hope, can't you?

• Dead USB flash drive

  So a friend has come to me with a problem. They have a dead USB thumb drive which no longer responds when plugged into a machine. I've tried it in a Mac and it doesn't even respond, at least on a Windows XP machine it sees that it is there but can't show it in explorer, just that whatever is plugged in has malfunctioned. There is obviously current because the activity light on the drive illuminates. I'm looking for suggestions, please. I have access to Mac or Windows hardware and am happy to experiment (and even to pay if the solution works!) It's a bit late to recommend regular backups, but in the lack of that, what's the next best forensic advice? Edit: I should stress that, if possible, we're trying to rescue the data, after all, thumb drives are basically disposable and hardly worth the bother if there's no emotional or functional reason for wanting to rescue it!

• Recovered folders from Camera show as JPEG files and can can't be viewed.

  I have recovered a CCTV camera hard disk after a crash and have managed to get most of the data using EasyRecovery Pro. The problem is now that all the data that I have recovered appear like File09.JPG with and image icon in windows XP, but the files can't be viewed in any JPEG viewer software. I suspect that the .JPG files are indeed folders, but I can't force windows XP the change the file type. Very Odd. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Hoo
