• certificate SSH login does not work on 22 but other port

- by Hugo
On my Red Hat server, the sshd will not accept my correct certificate login. However, If i start another sshd on another port, it works! (I assume the second sshd loads the same configruation files.) second sshd started with: sudo /usr/sbin/sshd -p 54321 -d #-d is optional and prints debug output ssh strange-host -p 22 -vvv prints: debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic,password debug1: Offering public key: /home/me/.ssh/id_dsa debug3: send_pubkey_test debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply debug3: Wrote 528 bytes for a total of 2389 debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic,password debug2: we did not send a packet, disable method debug3: authmethod_lookup password ssh strange-host -p 54321 -vvv prints: debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic,password debug1: Offering public key: /home/me/.ssh/id_dsa debug3: send_pubkey_test debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply debug3: Wrote 528 bytes for a total of 2389 debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-dss blen 433 debug2: input_userauth_pk_ok: SHA1 fp 0f:1c:df:27:f7:86:49:a8:47:7e:7f:f3:32:1c:7d:04:a3:73:a5:72 So the question is why the difference? I have thought of no way to get any helpful logging from the "standard" sshd to troubleshoot the problem.

• Migrating ODBC information through a batch file

- by DeskSide
I am a desktop support technician currently working on a large scale migration project across multiple sites. I am looking at a way to transfer ODBC entries from Windows XP to Windows 7. If anyone knows of a program or anything prebuilt that already does this, please redirect me. I've already looked but haven't found anything, so I'm trying to build my own. I know enough basic programming to read the work of others and monkey around with something that already exists, but not much else. I have come across a custom batch file written at one site that (among other things) exports ODBC information from the old computer and stores it on a server (labelled as y: through net use at the beginning of the file), then later transfers it from the server to a new computer. The pre-existing code is for Windows XP to XP migrations. Here are the pertinate bits of code: echo Exporting ODBC Information start /wait regedit.exe /e "y:\%username%\odbc.reg" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI (and later on) echo Importing ODBC start /wait regedit /s "y:\%username%\odbc.reg" We are now migrating from Windows XP to 7, and this part of the batch file still seems to work for this particular site, where Oracle 8i and 10g are used. I'm looking to use my cut down version of this code at multiple sites, and I'm wondering if the same lines of code will still work for anything other than Oracle. Also, my research on this issue has shown that there are different locations in 64 bit operating systems for 32/64 bit entries, and I'm wondering what effect that would have on the code. Could I copy the same data to both parts of the registry, in hopes of catching everything? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

• Unable to create files in a directory

- by vamsi360
I have created a directory in Virutalbox. Using VBoxManage, I am executing a script inside the Ubuntu VM directory I created above from Ubuntu host OS. But if the script in the VM contains commands for creating a new file, they are not executing. "echo" commands before and after the touch ommand are working fine. I even used root user for VBoxManage to install. I think the directory is not allowing the files to be created . How can I make a directory in Linux to be 777 to all new files created automatically. I mean, even if I make the directory (chmod 777 dir), I am unable to execute the script from the host. Please help. It may be simple permissions problem. Even root is unable to execute. VBoxManage guestcontrol "Ubuntu_10_04" execute --image "/bin/bash" "/home/cloudlet/Desktop/temp2/three" --username root --password root --verbose --wait-exit --wait-stdout -- -l /usr Please help. I am struggling with this problem for the past one week.

• Recovering a broken NTFS filesystem?

- by OverTheRainbow
A much-needed Windows Update broke a Vista laptop that was running fine until then: After booting up, Windows displays "Please wait..." but it never goes anywhere. I waited for a couple of hours, there is a bit of disk activity, but it didn't work out in the end. I booted with the Vista DVD, chose "Repair your computer" which said that there was nothing wrong :-/ Next, I booted it up with a Linux USB keydrive, and ran Gparted 0.8.1 (which includes ntfsresize v2011.4.12AR.4 libntfs-3g) which displays a bunch of warnings for the NTFS partition where the Vista system is located such as: ntfs_mst_post_read_fixup: magic: 0x00000000 size: 1024 usa_ofs: 0 usa_count: 65535: Invalid argument Record 16 has no FILE magic (0x0) Next, I ran ntfsfix /dev/sda2, which said: Mounting volume... OK Processing of $MFT and $MFTMirr completed successfully. NTFS volume version is 3.1. NTFS partition /dev/sda2 was processed successfully. Next, I rebooted Vista, which did a CHKDSK, before rebooting. But I'm still getting nowhere with "Please wait..." Before I copy the user's data to another host and reinstall Vista from a DVD, does someone know what I could try? Thank you. Edit: In case someone else has the same issue... After the BIOS, hit F8 and choose "Repair your computer", followed by "Toshiba HDD Recovery". In addition to a 1,5GB partition labelled "WinRE", the hard disk contains a second partition labeled "Data" from which the application will fetch a system image and reinstall it in the "Vista" partition. Make sure you copy your data out of the system partition before doing this.

• Let varnish send old data from cache while it's fetching a new one?

- by mark
I'm caching dynamically generated pages (PHP-FPM, NGINX) and have varnish in front of them, this works very well. However, once the cache timeout is reached, I see this: new client requests page varnish recognizes the cache timeout client waits varnish fetches new page from backend varnish delivers new page to the client (and has page cached, too, for the next request which gets it instantly) What I would like to do is: client requests page varnish recognizes the timeout varnish delivers old page to the client varnish fetches new page from backend and puts it into the cache In my case it's not site where outdated information is such a big problem, especially not when we're talking about cache timeout from a few minutes. However, I don't want punish user to wait in line and rather deliver something immediate. Is that possible in some way? To illustrate, here's a sample output of running siege 5 minutes against my server which was configured to cache for one minute: HTTP/1.1,200, 1.97, 12710,/,1,2013-06-24 00:21:06 ... HTTP/1.1,200, 1.88, 12710,/,1,2013-06-24 00:21:20 ... HTTP/1.1,200, 1.93, 12710,/,1,2013-06-24 00:22:08 ... HTTP/1.1,200, 1.89, 12710,/,1,2013-06-24 00:22:22 ... HTTP/1.1,200, 1.94, 12710,/,1,2013-06-24 00:23:10 ... HTTP/1.1,200, 1.91, 12709,/,1,2013-06-24 00:23:23 ... HTTP/1.1,200, 1.93, 12710,/,1,2013-06-24 00:24:12 ... I left out the hundreds of requests running in 0.02 or so. But it still concerns me that there are going to be users having to wait almost 2 seconds for their raw HTML. Can't we do any better here? (I came across Varnish send while cache , it sounded similar but not exactly what I'm trying to do.)

• .bat file - Nagios v3.2 service check and start if stopped

- by LbakerIT
I'm just barely getting into programming so I do apologize for my ignorance. I'm trying to create a .bat file that will check if a service is running on XP Pro. If service is running it will exit 0. If the service is stopped start service wait 10 seconds (via ping i'm guessing) check if service is running if service is running exit 0 if service is stopped start service wait 10 seconds Do this check a total of 3 times. if service does not come up within that time: exit 2 Exit 0 = ok exit 1 = warning exit 3 = critical (and this will alert) I need to do this for 3 different services but i'm expecting that it would be better to create one per service. That way you get notified on the specific service that is not coming back up. The goal is that if the service stops it will start it. If after 30 seconds it is unable to start the service then it will send an alert. The reason I'm trying to do it with a .bat is this is consistent with all other scripts and I did not want to complicate it further by adding different kinds of code. Yay for consistency! Again I do apologize for my ignorance I've been thrown into this project last minute. Thank you for the help and reading my question!

• How to ensure local file is up-to-date or ahead (dropbox sync) before truecrypt auto-mount it?

- by user620965
There are a lot tutorials out there that states that dropbox build-in encryption is not secure enought. That tutorials recommands to sync a truecrypt container file to have all files in it securely encrypted. This setup is know to be limited. You can NOT have that truecrypt container file mounted on the same time on more than one location - if you have inserted changes to the contents of the container in more then one location at a time then this setup produces a conflict on the container file in the dropbox system - resulting in one container file for each location. In my case that issue is not relevant - i do not use my data on more than one location at a time. I want to use the auto-mount feature of truecrypt on startup of windows 7 to have a zero configuration environment - and start working right away. But i want to ensure that the local truecrypt container file is up-to-date before truecrypt mounts it automatically - imagine you updated the contents of the container on your primary location and your secondary location was off for a long time. In that case it can take "a long time" till dropbox sync is complete (e.g. depending on your internet connection and the size of the container file). There is a option in truecrypt that ensures that truecrypt do not update the timestamp of the container file - which speeds up the sync, because dropbox client is doing a differential sync then instead of a time consuming full-sync. That is an improvement to that setup, but this do not fix my issue. The question is how to make the auto-mount function wait for the container file to be up-to-date (updated by dropbox)? In contrast: if the file was changed local, but remote file (in the dropbox cloud system) is still old (not jet updated by the sync process / or process is progress), should not make truecrypt to wait for the sync. Suggestions?

• Drools flow architecture, Drools flow events with AND join nodes

- by Shoukry K
I have been evaluating a number of frameworks including jBPM and Drools flow for my application requirements. Lots of the opinions seem to be inclined towards Drools flow as its more flexible, knowledge oriented, easier to integrate with business rules, etc.. The application is some sort of an Email Campaign manager , where different customers can sign in, prepare (design) and launch email campaigns. The application should be able to do the following : 1- Receive a list of email addresses, send emails to each of these addresses starting from a certain date and during a certain time interval of the day , do some custom actions, and then wait for reply emails. 2- If a reply email is received and depending on the response text of the email , and depending on the time the email was received certain actions need to happen, web service calls need to take place, and error handling for these calls. 3- The application will manage and run many and different campaigns (different customers and different flows for each customer) at any point of time. The first question is : Is Drools flow the way to go about this? My main concerns are scalability, suspending, resuming flows, and long wait, and flows management. As you see from the requirements : There is a scheduling part : Certain flows need to be run at a certain point in time, they need to get suspended and then resumed. For example start sending emails starting on Dec 1st 2010 and send emails only in the time interval between 08:00 and 17:00 GMT. By then it might be that all subscribers have been sent emails, but it might not be the case, the process needs to (resume) on Dec 2nd and send a second batch, however certain (users) already received emails and they should be able to (continue at different stages of the flow) There are long wait states : Days or even weeks , i need to persist, suspend / resume and terminate flows (manage flows) External Events : This is where i got stuck first, i tried to put together a simple flow (see attached screenshot) See image http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/9620/workflowwithevents.png , there is a start node , connected to an action node, connected to a join. An event node is connected to a second action node, which is connected to the join. The join is an AND join , after the join there is an action and the end node. Here is the sample code i am using to launch the flow : KnowledgeBuilder builder = KnowledgeBuilderFactory .newKnowledgeBuilder(); builder.add(ResourceFactory.newClassPathResource("campaign.rf", CampaignsDroolsPoc.class), ResourceType.DRF); if (builder.hasErrors()) { KnowledgeBuilderErrors errors = builder.getErrors(); Iterator<KnowledgeBuilderError> iterator = errors.iterator(); while (iterator.hasNext()) { System.out.println(iterator.next().toString()); } } KnowledgeBase base = KnowledgeBaseFactory.newKnowledgeBase(); base.addKnowledgePackages(builder.getKnowledgePackages()); final StatefulKnowledgeSession ksession = base .newStatefulKnowledgeSession(); // KnowledgeRuntimeLoggerFactory.newConsoleLogger(ksession); ksession.getWorkItemManager().registerWorkItemHandler("Log", new SendSMSWorkItemHandler()); ProcessInstance startProcess = ksession.startProcess("flow"); System.out.println("Signaling event"); startProcess.signalEvent("ev1", "ev1"); System.out.println("Signaled"); ksession.fireUntilHalt(); I am noticing that the event get triggered, the action node connected to the event gets triggered, however things seem to get stuck at the join. The flow does not continue past the AND join and the flow seems to get stuck. The action following the node does not get triggered. I also went through the drools flow documentation , and all the example codes, however i didn't find anything there. In addition any hints about the way to go about architecting the solution, and implementing it would be great.

• Active Directory Password Policy Problem

- by Will
To Clarify: my question is why isn't my password policy applying to people in the domain. Hey guys, having trouble with our password policy in Active Directory. Sometimes it just helps me to type out what I’m seeing It appears to not be applying properly across the board. I am new to this environment and AD in general but I think I have a general grasp of what should be going on. It’s a pretty simple AD setup without too many Group Policies being applied. It looks something like this DOMAIN Default Domain Policy (link enabled) Password Policy (link enabled and enforce) Personal OU Force Password Change (completely empty nothing in this GPO) IT OU Lockout Policy (link enabled and enforced) CS OU Lockout Policy Accouting OU Lockout Policy The password policy and default domain policy both define the same things under Computer ConfigWindows seetings sec settings Account Policies / Password Policy Enforce password History : 24 passwords remembered Maximum Password age : 180 days Min password age: 14 days Minimum Password Length: 6 characters Password must meet complexity requirements: Enabled Store Passwords using reversible encryption: Disabled Account Policies / Account Lockout Policy Account Lockout Duration 10080 Minutes Account Lockout Threshold: 5 invalid login attempts Reset Account Lockout Counter after : 30 minutes IT lockout This just sets the screen saver settings to lock computers when the user is Idle. After running Group Policy modeling it seems like the password policy and default domain policy is getting applied to everyone. Here is the results of group policy modeling on MO-BLANCKM using the mblanck account, as you can see the policies are both being applied , with nothing important being denied Group Policy Results NCLGS\mblanck on NCLGS\MO-BLANCKM Data collected on: 12/29/2010 11:29:44 AM Summary Computer Configuration Summary General Computer name NCLGS\MO-BLANCKM Domain NCLGS.local Site Default-First-Site-Name Last time Group Policy was processed 12/29/2010 10:17:58 AM Group Policy Objects Applied GPOs Name Link Location Revision Default Domain Policy NCLGS.local AD (15), Sysvol (15) WSUS-52010 NCLGS.local/WSUS/Clients AD (54), Sysvol (54) Password Policy NCLGS.local AD (58), Sysvol (58) Denied GPOs Name Link Location Reason Denied Local Group Policy Local Empty Security Group Membership when Group Policy was applied BUILTIN\Administrators Everyone S-1-5-21-507921405-1326574676-682003330-1003 BUILTIN\Users NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users NCLGS\MO-BLANCKM$ NCLGS\Admin-ComputerAccounts-GP NCLGS\Domain Computers WMI Filters Name Value Reference GPO(s) None Component Status Component Name Status Last Process Time Group Policy Infrastructure Success 12/29/2010 10:17:59 AM EFS recovery Success (no data) 10/28/2010 9:10:34 AM Registry Success 10/28/2010 9:10:32 AM Security Success 10/28/2010 9:10:34 AM User Configuration Summary General User name NCLGS\mblanck Domain NCLGS.local Last time Group Policy was processed 12/29/2010 11:28:56 AM Group Policy Objects Applied GPOs Name Link Location Revision Default Domain Policy NCLGS.local AD (7), Sysvol (7) IT-Lockout NCLGS.local/Personal/CS AD (11), Sysvol (11) Password Policy NCLGS.local AD (5), Sysvol (5) Denied GPOs Name Link Location Reason Denied Local Group Policy Local Empty Force Password Change NCLGS.local/Personal Empty Security Group Membership when Group Policy was applied NCLGS\Domain Users Everyone BUILTIN\Administrators BUILTIN\Users NT AUTHORITY\INTERACTIVE NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users LOCAL NCLGS\MissingSkidEmail NCLGS\Customer_Service NCLGS\Email_Archive NCLGS\Job Ticket Users NCLGS\Office Staff NCLGS\CUSTOMER SERVI-1 NCLGS\Prestige_Jobs_Email NCLGS\Telecommuters NCLGS\Everyone - NCL WMI Filters Name Value Reference GPO(s) None Component Status Component Name Status Last Process Time Group Policy Infrastructure Success 12/29/2010 11:28:56 AM Registry Success 12/20/2010 12:05:51 PM Scripts Success 10/13/2010 10:38:40 AM Computer Configuration Windows Settings Security Settings Account Policies/Password Policy Policy Setting Winning GPO Enforce password history 24 passwords remembered Password Policy Maximum password age 180 days Password Policy Minimum password age 14 days Password Policy Minimum password length 6 characters Password Policy Password must meet complexity requirements Enabled Password Policy Store passwords using reversible encryption Disabled Password Policy Account Policies/Account Lockout Policy Policy Setting Winning GPO Account lockout duration 10080 minutes Password Policy Account lockout threshold 5 invalid logon attempts Password Policy Reset account lockout counter after 30 minutes Password Policy Local Policies/Security Options Network Security Policy Setting Winning GPO Network security: Force logoff when logon hours expire Enabled Default Domain Policy Public Key Policies/Autoenrollment Settings Policy Setting Winning GPO Enroll certificates automatically Enabled [Default setting] Renew expired certificates, update pending certificates, and remove revoked certificates Disabled Update certificates that use certificate templates Disabled Public Key Policies/Encrypting File System Properties Winning GPO [Default setting] Policy Setting Allow users to encrypt files using Encrypting File System (EFS) Enabled Certificates Issued To Issued By Expiration Date Intended Purposes Winning GPO SBurns SBurns 12/13/2007 5:24:30 PM File Recovery Default Domain Policy For additional information about individual settings, launch Group Policy Object Editor. • How to Force an Exception from a Task to be Observed in a Continuation Task?

- by Richard
I have a task to perform an HttpWebRequest using Task<WebResponse>.Factory.FromAsync(req.BeginGetRespone, req.EndGetResponse) which can obviously fail with a WebException. To the caller I want to return a Task<HttpResult> where HttpResult is a helper type to encapsulate the response (or not). In this case a 4xx or 5xx response is not an exception. Therefore I've attached two continuations to the request task. One with TaskContinuationOptions OnlyOnRanToCompletion and the other with OnlyOnOnFaulted. And then wrapped the whole thing in a Task<HttpResult> to pick up the one result whichever continuation completes. Each of the three child tasks (request plus two continuations) is created with the AttachedToParent option. But when the caller waits on the returned outer task, an AggregateException is thrown is the request failed. I want to, in the on faulted continuation, observe the WebException so the client code can just look at the result. Adding a Wait in the on fault continuation throws, but a try-catch around this doesn't help. Nor does looking at the Exception property (as section "Observing Exceptions By Using the Task.Exception Property" hints here). I could install a UnobservedTaskException event handler to filter, but as the event offers no direct link to the faulted task this will likely interact outside this part of the application and is a case of a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Given an instance of a faulted Task<T> is there any means of flagging it as "fault handled"? Simplified code: public static Task<HttpResult> Start(Uri url) { var webReq = BuildHttpWebRequest(url); var result = new HttpResult(); var taskOuter = Task<HttpResult>.Factory.StartNew(() => { var tRequest = Task<WebResponse>.Factory.FromAsync( webReq.BeginGetResponse, webReq.EndGetResponse, null, TaskCreationOptions.AttachedToParent); var tError = tRequest.ContinueWith<HttpResult>( t => HandleWebRequestError(t, result), TaskContinuationOptions.AttachedToParent |TaskContinuationOptions.OnlyOnFaulted); var tSuccess = tRequest.ContinueWith<HttpResult>( t => HandleWebRequestSuccess(t, result), TaskContinuationOptions.AttachedToParent |TaskContinuationOptions.OnlyOnRanToCompletion); return result; }); return taskOuter; } with: private static HttpDownloaderResult HandleWebRequestError( Task<WebResponse> respTask, HttpResult result) { Debug.Assert(respTask.Status == TaskStatus.Faulted); Debug.Assert(respTask.Exception.InnerException is WebException); // Try and observe the fault: Doesn't help. try { respTask.Wait(); } catch (AggregateException e) { Log("HandleWebRequestError: waiting on antecedent task threw inner: " + e.InnerException.Message); } // ... populate result with details of the failure for the client ... return result; } (HandleWebRequestSuccess will eventually spin off further tasks to get the content of the response...) The client should be able to wait on the task and then look at its result, without it throwing due to a fault that is expected and already handled.

• ssh login fails for user with empty password

- by Reid
How do you enable ssh login on OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) for a user with an empty password? I've seen others asking this question, and like me it's for the same reason: a parent who can't deal with passwords. So "set a password" is not an option. I found references to adding "nullok" to various PAM config files. Didn't work. Found sshd config "PermitEmptyPasswords yes". Didn't work. I've done a diff on "ssh -vvv" between a successful ssh with a password-enabled account and the one with no password. 54,55c54,55 < debug2: dh_gen_key: priv key bits set: 133/256 < debug2: bits set: 533/1024 --- > debug2: dh_gen_key: priv key bits set: 140/256 > debug2: bits set: 508/1024 67c67 < debug2: bits set: 509/1024 --- > debug2: bits set: 516/1024 79c79 < debug2: key: /Users/rae/.ssh/rae (0x7f9a0241e2c0) --- > debug2: key: /Users/rae/.ssh/rae (0x7f81e0c1e2c0) 90,116c90,224 < debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,keyboard-interactive < debug2: we did not send a packet, disable method < debug3: authmethod_lookup keyboard-interactive < debug3: remaining preferred: password < debug3: authmethod_is_enabled keyboard-interactive < debug1: Next authentication method: keyboard-interactive < debug2: userauth_kbdint < debug2: we sent a keyboard-interactive packet, wait for reply < debug2: input_userauth_info_req < debug2: input_userauth_info_req: num_prompts 1 < debug3: packet_send2: adding 32 (len 14 padlen 18 extra_pad 64) < debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,keyboard-interactive < debug2: userauth_kbdint < debug2: we sent a keyboard-interactive packet, wait for reply < debug2: input_userauth_info_req < debug2: input_userauth_info_req: num_prompts 1 < debug3: packet_send2: adding 32 (len 14 padlen 18 extra_pad 64) < debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,keyboard-interactive < debug2: userauth_kbdint < debug2: we sent a keyboard-interactive packet, wait for reply < debug2: input_userauth_info_req < debug2: input_userauth_info_req: num_prompts 1 < debug3: packet_send2: adding 32 (len 14 padlen 18 extra_pad 64) < debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,keyboard-interactive < debug2: we did not send a packet, disable method < debug1: No more authentication methods to try. < Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive). --- > debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-dss blen 433 > debug2: input_userauth_pk_ok: fp 6e:02:20:63:48:6a:08:99:b8:5f:12:d8:d5:3d:e1:fb > debug3: sign_and_send_pubkey: DSA 6e:02:20:63:48:6a:08:99:b8:5f:12:d8:d5:3d:e1:fb > debug1: read PEM private key done: type DSA > debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey). > Authenticated to cme-mini.local ([192.168.1.5]:22). > debug2: fd 7 setting O_NONBLOCK > debug3: fd 8 is O_NONBLOCK > debug1: channel 0: new [client-session] > debug3: ssh_session2_open: channel_new: 0 > debug2: channel 0: send open > debug1: Requesting [email protected] > debug1: Entering interactive session. > debug2: callback start > debug2: client_session2_setup: id 0 > debug2: fd 5 setting TCP_NODELAY > debug2: channel 0: request pty-req confirm 1 > debug1: Sending environment.

• How to unit test synchronized code

- by gillJ
Hi, I am new to Java and junit. I have the following peice of code that I want to test. Would appreciate if you could send your ideas about what's the best way to go about testing it. Basically, the following code is about electing a leader form a Cluster. The leader holds a lock on the shared cache and services of the leader get resumed and disposed if it somehow looses the lock on the cache. How can i make sure that a leader/thread still holds the lock on the cache and that another thread cannot get its services resumed while the first is in execution? public interface ContinuousService { public void resume(); public void pause(); } public abstract class ClusterServiceManager { private volatile boolean leader = false; private volatile boolean electable = true; private List<ContinuousService> services; protected synchronized void onElected() { if (!leader) { for (ContinuousService service : services) { service.resume(); } leader = true; } } protected synchronized void onDeposed() { if (leader) { for (ContinuousService service : services) { service.pause(); } leader = false; } } public void setServices(List<ContinuousService> services) { this.services = services; } @ManagedAttribute public boolean isElectable() { return electable; } @ManagedAttribute public boolean isLeader() { return leader; } public class TangosolLeaderElector extends ClusterServiceManager implements Runnable { private static final Logger log = LoggerFactory.getLogger(TangosolLeaderElector.class); private String election; private long electionWaitTime= 5000L; private NamedCache cache; public void start() { log.info("Starting LeaderElector ({})",election); Thread t = new Thread(this, "LeaderElector ("+election+")"); t.setDaemon(true); t.start(); } public void run() { // Give the connection a chance to start itself up try { Thread.sleep(1000); } catch (InterruptedException e) {} boolean wasElectable = !isElectable(); while (true) { if (isElectable()) { if (!wasElectable) { log.info("Leadership requested on election: {}",election); wasElectable = isElectable(); } boolean elected = false; try { // Try and get the lock on the LeaderElectorCache for the current election if (!cache.lock(election, electionWaitTime)) { // We didn't get the lock. cycle round again. // This code to ensure we check the electable flag every now & then continue; } elected = true; log.info("Leadership taken on election: {}",election); onElected(); // Wait here until the services fail in some way. while (true) { try { Thread.sleep(electionWaitTime); } catch (InterruptedException e) {} if (!cache.lock(election, 0)) { log.warn("Cache lock no longer held for election: {}", election); break; } else if (!isElectable()) { log.warn("Node is no longer electable for election: {}", election); break; } // We're fine - loop round and go back to sleep. } } catch (Exception e) { if (log.isErrorEnabled()) { log.error("Leadership election " + election + " failed (try bfmq logs for details)", e); } } finally { if (elected) { cache.unlock(election); log.info("Leadership resigned on election: {}",election); onDeposed(); } // On deposition, do not try and get re-elected for at least the standard wait time. try { Thread.sleep(electionWaitTime); } catch (InterruptedException e) {} } } else { // Not electable - wait a bit and check again. if (wasElectable) { log.info("Leadership NOT requested on election ({}) - node not electable",election); wasElectable = isElectable(); } try { Thread.sleep(electionWaitTime); } catch (InterruptedException e) {} } } } public void setElection(String election) { this.election = election; } @ManagedAttribute public String getElection() { return election; } public void setNamedCache(NamedCache nc) { this.cache = nc; }

• Can i create different observables and different corresponding observers in java?

- by mithun1538
Hello everyone, Currently, I have one observable and many observers. What i need is different observables, and depending on the observable, different observers. How do I achieve this? ( For understanding, assume I have different apples - say apple1 apple2... I have observer_1 observing apple1, observer_2 observing apple2, observer_3 observing apple 2 and so on..). I tried creating different objects of the Observable class, but since observers are observing the same class of observable, I don't know how to access a particular instance of the Observable. I have included the following servlet code that contains Observer and Observable classes: public class CustomerServlet extends HttpServlet { public String getNextMessage() { // Create a message sink to wait for a new message from the // message source. return new MessageSink().getNextMessage(source); } @Override protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException { ObjectOutputStream dout = new ObjectOutputStream(response.getOutputStream()); String recMSG = getNextMessage(); dout.writeObject(recMSG); dout.flush(); } public void broadcastMessage(String message) { // Send the message to all the HTTP-connected clients by giving the // message to the message source source.sendMessage(message); } @Override protected void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException { try { ObjectInputStream din= new ObjectInputStream(request.getInputStream()); String message = (String)din.readObject(); ObjectOutputStream dout = new ObjectOutputStream(response.getOutputStream()); dout.writeObject("1"); dout.flush(); if (message != null) { broadcastMessage(message); } // Set the status code to indicate there will be no response response.setStatus(response.SC_NO_CONTENT); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } @Override public String getServletInfo() { return "Short description"; }// </editor-fold> MessageSource source = new MessageSource(); } class MessageSource extends Observable { public void sendMessage(String message) { setChanged(); notifyObservers(message); } } class MessageSource extends Observable { public void sendMessage(String message) { setChanged(); notifyObservers(message); } } class MessageSink implements Observer { String message = null; // set by update() and read by getNextMessage() // Called by the message source when it gets a new message synchronized public void update(Observable o, Object arg) { // Get the new message message = (String)arg; // Wake up our waiting thread notify(); } // Gets the next message sent out from the message source synchronized public String getNextMessage(MessageSource source) { // Tell source we want to be told about new messages source.addObserver(this); // Wait until our update() method receives a message while (message == null) { try { wait(); } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println("Exception has occured! ERR ERR ERR"); } } // Tell source to stop telling us about new messages source.deleteObserver(this); // Now return the message we received // But first set the message instance variable to null // so update() and getNextMessage() can be called again. String messageCopy = message; message = null; return messageCopy; } }

• "FOR UPDATE" v/s "LOCK IN SHARE MODE" : Allow concurrent threads to read updated "state" value of locked row

- by shadesco
I have the following scenario: User X logs in to the application from location lc1: call it Ulc1 User X (has been hacked, or some friend of his knows his login credential, or he just logs in from a different browser on his machine,etc.. u got the point) logs in at the same time from location lc2: call it Ulc2 I am using a main servlet which : - gets a connection from database pooling - sets autocommit to false - executes a command that goes through app layers: if all successful, set autocommit to true in a "finally" statement, and closes connection. Else if an exception happens, rollback(). In my database (mysql/innoDb) i have a "history" table, with row columns: id(primary key) |username | date | topic | locked The column "locked" has by default value "false" and it serves as a flag that marks if a specific row is locked or not. Each row is specific to a user (as u can see from the username column) So back to the scenario: --Ulc1 sends the command to update his history from the db for date "D" and topic "T". --Ulc2 sends the same command to update history from the db for the same date "D" and same topic "T" at the exact same time. I want to implement an mysql/innoDB locking system that will enable whichever thread arriving to do the following check: Is column "locked" for this row true or not? if true, return a message to the user that " he is already updating the same data from another location" if not true (ie not locked) : flag it as locked and update then reset locked to false once finished. Which of these two mysql locking techniques, will actually allow the 2nd arriving thread from reading the "updated" value of the locked column to decide wt action to take?Should i use "FOR UPDATE" or "LOCK IN SHARE MODE"? This scenario explains what i want to accomplish: - Ulc1 thread arrives first: column "locked" is false, set it to true and continue updating process - Ulc2 thread arrives while Ulc1's transaction is still in process, and even though the row is locked through innoDb functionalities, it doesn't have to wait but in fact reads the "new" value of column locked which is "true", and so doesn't in fact have to wait till Ulc1 transaction commits to read the value of the "locked" column(anyway by that time the value of this column will already have been reset to false). I am not very experienced with the 2 types of locking mechanisms, what i understand so far is that LOCK IN SHARE MODE allow other transaction to read the locked row while FOR UPDATE doesn't even allow reading. But does this read gets on the updated value? or the 2nd arriving thread has to wait the first thread to commit to then read the value? Any recommendations about which locking mechanism to use for this scenario is appreciated. Also if there's a better way to "check" if the row has been locked (other than using a true/false column flag) please let me know about it. thank you SOLUTION (Jdbc pseudocode example based on @Darhazer's answer) Table : [ id(primary key) |username | date | topic | locked ] connection.setautocommit(false); //transaction-1 PreparedStatement ps1 = "Select locked from tableName for update where id="key" and locked=false); ps1.executeQuery(); //transaction 2 PreparedStatement ps2 = "Update tableName set locked=true where id="key"; ps2.executeUpdate(); connection.setautocommit(true);// here we allow other transactions threads to see the new value connection.setautocommit(false); //transaction 3 PreparedStatement ps3 = "Update tableName set aField="Sthg" where id="key" And date="D" and topic="T"; ps3.executeUpdate(); // reset locked to false PreparedStatement ps4 = "Update tableName set locked=false where id="key"; ps4.executeUpdate(); //commit connection.setautocommit(true);

• C# Alternating threads

- by Mutoh
Imagine a situation in which there are one king and n number of minions submissed to him. When the king says "One!", one of the minions says "Two!", but only one of them. That is, only the fastest minion speaks while the others must wait for another call of the king. This is my try: using System; using System.Threading; class Program { static bool leaderGO = false; void Leader() { do { lock(this) { //Console.WriteLine("? {0}", leaderGO); if (leaderGO) Monitor.Wait(this); Console.WriteLine("> One!"); Thread.Sleep(200); leaderGO = true; Monitor.Pulse(this); } } while(true); } void Follower (char chant) { do { lock(this) { //Console.WriteLine("! {0}", leaderGO); if (!leaderGO) Monitor.Wait(this); Console.WriteLine("{0} Two!", chant); leaderGO = false; Monitor.Pulse(this); } } while(true); } static void Main() { Console.WriteLine("Go!\n"); Program m = new Program(); Thread king = new Thread(() => m.Leader()); Thread minion1 = new Thread(() => m.Follower('#')); Thread minion2 = new Thread(() => m.Follower('$')); king.Start(); minion1.Start(); minion2.Start(); Console.ReadKey(); king.Abort(); minion1.Abort(); minion2.Abort(); } } The expected output would be this (# and $ representing the two different minions): > One! # Two! > One! $ Two! > One! $ Two! ... The order in which they'd appear doesn't matter, it'd be random. The problem, however, is that this code, when compiled, produces this instead: > One! # Two! $ Two! > One! # Two! > One! $ Two! # Two! ... That is, more than one minion speaks at the same time. This would cause quite the tumult with even more minions, and a king shoudln't allow a meddling of this kind. What would be a possible solution?

• Queued Loadtest to remove Concurrency issues using Shared Data Service in OpenScript

- by stefan.thieme(at)oracle.com
Queued Processing to remove Concurrency issues in Loadtest ScriptsSome scripts act on information returned by the server, e.g. act on first item in the returned list of pending tasks/actions. This may lead to concurrency issues if the virtual users simulated in a load test scenario are not synchronized in some way.As the load test cases should be carried out in a comparable and straight forward manner simply cancel a transaction in case a collision occurs is clearly not an option. In case you increase the number of virtual users this approach would lead to a high number of requests for the early steps in your transaction (e.g. login, retrieve list of action points, assign an action point to the virtual user) but later steps would be rarely visited successfully or at all, depending on the application logic.A way to tackle this problem is to enqueue the virtual users in a Shared Data Service queue. Only the first virtual user in this queue will be allowed to carry out the critical steps (retrieve list of action points, assign an action point to the virtual user) in your transaction at any one time.Once a virtual user has passed the critical path it will dequeue himself from the head of the queue and continue with his actions. This does theoretically allow virtual users to run in parallel all steps of the transaction which are not part of the critical path.In practice it has been seen this is rarely the case, though it does not allow adding more than N users to perform a transaction without causing delays due to virtual users waiting in the queue. N being the time of the total transaction divided by the sum of the time of all critical steps in this transaction.While this problem can be circumvented by allowing multiple queues to act on individual segments of the list of actions, e.g. per country filter, ends with 0..9 filter, etc.This would require additional handling of these additional queues of slots for the virtual users at the head of the queue in order to maintain the mutually exclusive access to the first element in the list returned by the server at any one time of the load test. Such an improved handling of multiple queues and/or multiple slots is above the subject of this paper.Shared Data Services Pre-RequisitesStart WebLogic Server to host Shared Data ServicesYou will have to make sure that your WebLogic server is installed and started. Shared Data Services may not work if you installed only the minimal installation package for OpenScript. If however you installed the default package including OLT and OTM, you may follow the instructions below to start and verify WebLogic installation.To start the WebLogic Server deployed underneath of Oracle Load Testing and/or Oracle Test Manager you can go to your Start menu, Oracle Application Testing Suite and select the Restart Oracle Application Testing Suite Application Service entry from the Tools submenu.To verify the service has been started you can run the Microsoft Management Console for Services by Selecting Run from the Start Menu and entering services.msc. Look for the entry that reads Oracle Application Testing Suite Application Service, once it has changed it status from Starting to Started you can proceed to verify the login. Please note that this may take several minutes, I would say up to 10 minutes depending on the strength of your CPU horse-power.Verify WebLogic Server user credentialsYou will have to make sure that your WebLogic Server is installed and started. Next open the Oracle WebLogic Server Adminstration Console on http://localhost:8088/console.It may take a while until the application is deployed and started. It may display the following until the Administration Console has been deployed on the fly.Afterwards you can login using the username oats and the password that you selected during install time for your Application Testing Suite administrative purposes.This will bring up the Home page of you WebLogic Server. You have actually verified that you are able to login with these credentials already. However if you want to check the details, navigate to Security Realms, myrealm, Users and Groups tab.Here you could add users to your WebLogic Server which could be used in the later steps. Details on the Groups required for such a custom user to work are exceeding this quick overview and have to be selected with the WebLogic Server Adminstration Guide in mind.Shared Data Services pre-requisites for Load testingOpenScript Preferences have to be set to enable Encryption and provide a default Shared Data Service Connection for Playback.These are pre-requisites you want to use for load testing with Shared Data Services.Please note that the usage of the Connection Parameters (individual directive in the script) for Shared Data Services did not playback reliably in the current version 9.20.0370 of Oracle Load Testing (OLT) and encryption of credentials still seemed to be mandatory as well.General Encryption settingsSelect OpenScript Preferences from the View menu and navigate to the General, Encryption entry in the tree on the left. Select the Encrypt script data option from the list and enter the same password that you used for securing your WebLogic Server Administration Console.Enable global shared data access credentialsSelect OpenScript Preferences from the View menu and navigate to the Playback, Shared Data entry in the tree on the left. Enable the global shared data access credentials and enter the Address, User name and Password determined for your WebLogic Server to host Shared Data Services.Please note, that you may want to replace the localhost in Address with the hosts realname in case you plan to run load tests with Loadtest Agents running on remote systems.Queued Processing of TransactionsEnable Shared Data Services Module in Script PropertiesThe Shared Data Services Module has to be enabled for each Script that wants to employ the Shared Data Service Queue functionality in OpenScript. It can be enabled under the Script menu selecting Script Properties. On the Script Properties Dialog select the Modules section and check Shared Data to enable Shared Data Service Module for your script. Checking the Shared Data Services option will effectively add a line to your script code that adds the sharedData ScriptService to your script class of IteratingVUserScript.@ScriptService oracle.oats.scripting.modules.sharedData.api.SharedDataService sharedData;Record your scriptRecord your script as usual and then add the following things for Queue handling in the Initialize code block, before the first step and after the last step of your critical path and in the Finalize code block.The java code to be added at individual locations is explained in the following sections in full detail.Create a Shared Data Queue in InitializeTo create a Shared Data Queue go to the Java view of your script and enter the following statements to the initialize() code block.info("Create queueA with life time of 120 minutes");sharedData.createQueue("queueA", 120);This will create an instantiation of the Shared Data Queue object named queueA which is maintained for upto 120 minutes.If you want to use the code for multiple scripts, make sure to use a different queue name for each one here and in the subsequent steps. You may even consider to use a dynamic queueName based on filters of your result list being concurrently accessed.Prepare a unique id for each IterationIn order to keep track of individual virtual users in our queue we need to create a unique identifier from the virtual user id and the used username right after retrieving the next record from our databank file.getDatabank("Usernames").getNextDatabankRecord();getVariables().set("usernameValue1","VU_{{@vuid}}_{{@iterationnum}}_{{db.Usernames.Username}}_{{@timestamp}}_{{@random(10000)}}");String usernameValue = getVariables().get("usernameValue1");info("Now running virtual user " + usernameValue);As you can see from the above code block, we have set the OpenScript variable usernameValue1 to VU_{{@vuid}}_{{@iterationnum}}_{{db.Usernames.Username}}_{{@timestamp}}_{{@random(10000)}} which is a concatenation of the virtual user id and the iterationnumber for general uniqueness; as well as the username from our databank, the timestamp and a random number for making it further unique and ease spotting of errors.Not all of these fields are actually required to make it really unique, but adding the queue name may also be considered to help troubleshoot multiple queues.The value is then retrieved with the getVariables.get() method call and assigned to the usernameValue String used throughout the script.Please note that moving the getDatabank("Usernames").getNextDatabankRecord(); call to the initialize block was later considered to remove concurrency of multiple virtual users running with the same userid and therefor accessing the same "My Inbox" in step 6. This will effectively give each virtual user a userid from the databank file. Make sure you have enough userids to remove this second hurdle.Enqueue and attend Queue before Critical PathTo maintain the right order of virtual users being allowed into the critical path of the transaction the following pseudo step has to be added in front of the first critical step. In the case of this example this is right in front of the step where we retrieve the list of actions from which we select the first to be assigned to us.beginStep("[0] Waiting in the Queue", 0);{info("Enqueued virtual user " + usernameValue + " at the end of queueA");sharedData.offerLast("queueA", usernameValue);info("Wait until the user is the first in queueA");String queueValue1 = null;do {// we wait for at least 0.7 seconds before we check the head of the// queue. This is the time it takes one user to move through the// critical path, i.e. pass steps [5] Enter country and [6] Assign// to meThread.sleep(700);queueValue1 = (String) sharedData.peekFirst("queueA");info("The first user in queueA is currently: '" + queueValue1 + "' " + queueValue1.getClass() + " length " + queueValue1.length() );info("The current user is '"+ usernameValue + "' " + usernameValue.getClass() + " length " + usernameValue.length() + ": indexOf " + usernameValue.indexOf(queueValue1) + " equals " + usernameValue.equals(queueValue1) );} while ( queueValue1.indexOf(usernameValue) < 0 );info("Now the user is the first in queueA");}endStep();This will enqueue the username to the tail of our Queue. It will will wait for at least 700 milliseconds, the time it takes for one user to exit the critical path and then compare the head of our queue with it's username. This last step will be repeated while the two are not equal (indexOf less than zero). If they are equal the indexOf will yield a value of zero or larger and we will perform the critical steps.Dequeue after Critical PathAfter the virtual user has left the critical path and complete its last step the following code block needs to dequeue the virtual user. In the case of our example this is right after the action has been actually assigned to the virtual user. This will allow the next virtual user to retrieve the list of actions still available and in turn let him make his selection/assignment.info("Get and remove the current user from the head of queueA");String pollValue1 = (String) sharedData.pollFirst("queueA");The current user is removed from the head of the queue. The next one will now be able to match his username against the head of the queue.Clear and Destroy Queue for FinishWhen the script has completed, it should clear and destroy the queue. This code block can be put in the finish block of your script and/or in a separate script in order to clear and remove the queue in case you have spotted an error or want to reset the queue for some reason.info("Clear queueA");sharedData.clearQueue("queueA");info("Destroy queueA");sharedData.destroyQueue("queueA");The users waiting in queueA are cleared and the queue is destroyed. If you have scripts still executing they will be caught in a loop.I found it better to maintain a separate Reset Queue script which contained only the following code in the initialize() block. I use to call this script to make sure the queue is cleared in between multiple Loadtest runs. This script could also even be added as the first in a larger scenario, which would execute it only once at very start of the Loadtest and make sure the queues do not contain any stale entries.info("Create queueA with life time of 120 minutes");sharedData.createQueue("queueA", 120);info("Clear queueA");sharedData.clearQueue("queueA");This will create a Shared Data Queue instance of queueA and clear all entries from this queue.Monitoring QueueWhile creating the scripts it was useful to monitor the contents, i.e. the current first user in the Queue. The following code block will make sure the Shared Data Queue is accessible in the initialize() block.info("Create queueA with life time of 120 minutes");sharedData.createQueue("queueA", 120);In the run() block the following code will continuously monitor the first element of the Queue and write an informational message with the current username Value to the Result window.info("Monitor the first users in queueA");String queueValue1 = null;do {queueValue1 = (String) sharedData.peekFirst("queueA");if (queueValue1 != null)info("The first user in queueA is currently: '" + queueValue1 + "' " + queueValue1.getClass() + " length " + queueValue1.length() );} while ( true );This script can be run from OpenScript parallel to a loadtest performed by the Oracle Load Test.However it is not recommend to run this in a production loadtest as the performance impact is unknown. Accessing the Queue's head with the peekFirst() method has been reported with about 2 seconds response time by both OpenScript and OTL. It is advised to log a Service Request to see if this could be lowered in future releases of Application Testing Suite, as the pollFirst() and even offerLast() writing to the tail of the Queue usually returned after an average 0.1 seconds.Debugging QueueWhile debugging the scripts the following was useful to remove single entries from its head, i.e. the current first user in the Queue. The following code block will make sure the Shared Data Queue is accessible in the initialize() block.info("Create queueA with life time of 120 minutes");sharedData.createQueue("queueA", 120);In the run() block the following code will remove the first element of the Queue and write an informational message with the current username Value to the Result window.info("Get and remove the current user from the head of queueA");String pollValue1 = (String) sharedData.pollFirst("queueA");info("The first user in queueA was currently: '" + pollValue1 + "' " + pollValue1.getClass() + " length " + pollValue1.length() );ReferencesOracle Functional Testing OpenScript User's Guide Version 9.20 [E15488-05]Chapter 17 Using the Shared Data Modulehttp://download.oracle.com/otn/nt/apptesting/oats-docs-9.21.0030.zipOracle Fusion Middleware Oracle WebLogic Server Administration Console Online Help 11g Release 1 (10.3.4) [E13952-04]Administration Console Online Help - Manage users and groupshttp://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17904_01/apirefs.1111/e13952/taskhelp/security/ManageUsersAndGroups.htm

• Confusion related to sigwait in multiprocess system

- by user34790
I am having difficulty in understanding IPC in multiprocess system. I have this system where there are three child processes that send two types of signals to their process group. There are four types of signal handling processes responsible for a particular type of signal. There is this monitoring process which waits for both the signals and then processes accordingly. When I run this program for a while, the monitoring process doesn't seem to pick up the signal as well as the signal handling process. I could see in the log that the signal is only being generated but not handled at all. My code is given below #include <cstdlib> #include <iostream> #include <iomanip> #include <unistd.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/wait.h> #include <sys/time.h> #include <signal.h> #include <unistd.h> #include <fcntl.h> #include <cstdio> #include <stdlib.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <pthread.h> using namespace std; double timestamp() { struct timeval tp; gettimeofday(&tp, NULL); return (double)tp.tv_sec + tp.tv_usec / 1000000.; } double getinterval() { srand(time(NULL)); int r = rand()%10 + 1; double s = (double)r/100; } int count; int count_1; int count_2; double time_1[10]; double time_2[10]; pid_t senders[1]; pid_t handlers[4]; pid_t reporter; void catcher(int sig) { printf("Signal catcher called for %d",sig); } int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { void signal_catcher_int(int); pid_t pid,w; int status; if(signal(SIGUSR1, SIG_IGN) == SIG_ERR) { perror("1"); return 1; } if(signal(SIGUSR2 ,SIG_IGN) == SIG_ERR) { perror("2"); return 2; } if(signal(SIGINT,signal_catcher_int) == SIG_ERR) { perror("3"); return 2; } //Registering the signal handler for(int i=0; i<4; i++) { if((pid = fork()) == 0) { cout << i << endl; //struct sigaction sigact; sigset_t sigset; int sig; int result = 0; sigemptyset(&sigset); if(i%2 == 0) { if(signal(SIGUSR2, SIG_IGN) == SIG_ERR) { perror("2"); return 2; } sigaddset(&sigset, SIGUSR1); sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, &sigset, NULL); } else { if(signal(SIGUSR1, SIG_IGN) == SIG_ERR) { perror("2"); return 2; } sigaddset(&sigset, SIGUSR2); sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, &sigset, NULL); } while(true) { int result = sigwait(&sigset, &sig); if(result == 0) { cout << "The caught signal is " << sig << endl; } } exit(0); } else { cout << "Registerd the handler " << pid << endl; handlers[i] = pid; } } //Registering the monitoring process if((pid = fork()) == 0) { sigset_t sigset; int sig; int result = 0; sigemptyset(&sigset); sigaddset(&sigset, SIGUSR1); sigaddset(&sigset, SIGUSR2); sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, &sigset, NULL); while(true) { int result = sigwait(&sigset, &sig); if(result == 0) { cout << "The monitored signal is " << sig << endl; } else { cout << "error" << endl; } } } else { reporter = pid; } sleep(3); //Registering the signal generator for(int i=0; i<1; i++) { if((pid = fork()) == 0) { if(signal(SIGUSR1, SIG_IGN) == SIG_ERR) { perror("1"); return 1; } if(signal(SIGUSR2, SIG_IGN) == SIG_ERR) { perror("2"); return 2; } srand(time(0)); while(true) { volatile int signal_id = rand()%2 + 1; cout << "Generating the signal " << signal_id << endl; if(signal_id == 1) { killpg(getpgid(getpid()), SIGUSR1); } else { killpg(getpgid(getpid()), SIGUSR2); } int r = rand()%10 + 1; double s = (double)r/100; sleep(s); } exit(0); } else { cout << "Registered the sender " << pid << endl; senders[i] = pid; } } while(w = wait(&status)) { cout << "Wait on PID " << w << endl; } } void signal_catcher_int(int the_sig) { //cout << "Handling the Ctrl C signal " << endl; for(int i=0; i<1; i++) { kill(senders[i],SIGKILL); } for(int i=0; i<4; i++) { kill(handlers[i],SIGKILL); } kill(reporter,SIGKILL); exit(3); } Any suggestions? Further I could see very less signal processing by the monitoring process Can anyone please provide some insights. What's going on?

• What if “Microsoft” were in our shoes? About Windows Phone

- by Vijaya Malla
This is what I think about Microsoft Windows Phone. If Microsoft were in our shoes looking at various phones available their configurations, memory, front facing cameras etc. Microsoft disappointed the USA customer base again by not getting Nokia Lumia 800. The Past: If we talk few years ago, few business people were on their Blackberry’s and few Gadget lovers were on crappy Windows OS devices. The world was all going right till Apple came with a revolutionary device iPhone, which completely changed our perception towards phone and how great a smartphone can be. It’s not just phone but the whole technology industry. The romantic appealing of the phone and smooth touch and feel of it made everyone to get one of those bad boys. The sales went up for not just Apple for AT&T too. Even though everyone complained about the signal strength of AT&T, everyone wanted to be on it because they have iPhones. All world wanted iPhone back then except Microsoft with few comments on how it is not going to be in market. But it did great and rocked the industry. A few years later with iPhone and Android taking over the smartphone market Microsoft realized that it should be in the game too. Worked on the design of it, and gave us the best Mobile OS ever. Everyone thinks that iOS is a great OS for phones but if you have touched a Windows Phone and use it for real then you will realize the strengths of it. so last year we welcomed Windows Phone 7 The Present : Windows Phone 7 has the fastest growing market. The phones are cheap, you can buy from any carrier out there. The phone became smarter and smarter with the recent update “Mango (7.5)” and with the collaboration with Nokia, Microsoft created a new eco-system for smartphones with the best smartphone hardware and best smartphone software. Everyone in the world was excited about the collaboration. As we fly over cloud 9 imagining about Nokia made Windows Phones we all heard a good news from Nokia “Nokia World”. Nokia showed the world what a best hardware making company can do with Windows Phone 7.5 OS. Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 took the spotlight. Everyone here in USA and all over the world wanted to own a Nokia Lumia 800 because of the design, software, proprietary apps from Nokia (maps, ESPN, drive and music). If USA market had Nokia Lumia 800, then it would have been the best step Microsoft and Nokia had ever made in their history of smartphone market. With all the numbers going to Android and IPhone, its not clear on why Microsoft/Nokia did not release Lumia 800 here in USA. Its unclear if Microsoft had learnt the lesson or not. if it had learnt the lesson I guess Microsoft needs to get the Nokia Lumia 800 to the USA. The Future: This is where we hope we get the best form Microsoft. I was an iPhone user, I used 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4 and then moved to Windows Phone and never felt so happy with my iPhones’. From the day when Nokia announced the partnership with Microsoft and said that they going to come up with a new Nokia windows phone, I was dreaming for my Nokia Phone. but looks like it is not going to happen any time soon. My thoughts about the Market : Nokia has the biggest market base in the world. Even though people moved to Android or iPhone over the years in other parts of the world like India and China, people still love to use Nokia. Everyone who uses a Windows Phone now will wait for that day when Nokia Lumia comes to the USA but what either or both of the companies should do for a better market share is to make a very aggressive move with the hardware and bet on the devices. I am pretty sure that it will work. everyone here in the USA will like to have a dual core windows phone with front facing camera and all other crazy things that android/apple phones offer. I think we just have to wait for that day and hope that day comes soon. Love Microsoft and Nokia Thank you for reading.

• concurrency::accelerator_view

- by Daniel Moth
Overview We saw previously that accelerator represents a target for our C++ AMP computation or memory allocation and that there is a notion of a default accelerator. We ended that post by introducing how one can obtain accelerator_view objects from an accelerator object through the accelerator class's default_view property and the create_view method. The accelerator_view objects can be thought of as handles to an accelerator. You can also construct an accelerator_view given another accelerator_view (through the copy constructor or the assignment operator overload). Speaking of operator overloading, you can also compare (for equality and inequality) two accelerator_view objects between them to determine if they refer to the same underlying accelerator. We'll see later that when we use concurrency::array objects, the allocation of data takes place on an accelerator at array construction time, so there is a constructor overload that accepts an accelerator_view object. We'll also see later that a new concurrency::parallel_for_each function overload can take an accelerator_view object, so it knows on what target to execute the computation (represented by a lambda that the parallel_for_each also accepts). Beyond normal usage, accelerator_view is a quality of service concept that offers isolation to multiple "consumers" of an accelerator. If in your code you are accessing the accelerator from multiple threads (or, in general, from different parts of your app), then you'll want to create separate accelerator_view objects for each thread. flush, wait, and queuing_mode When you create an accelerator_view via the create_view method of the accelerator, you pass in an option of immediate or deferred, which are the two members of the queuing_mode enum. At any point you can access this value from the queuing_mode property of the accelerator_view. When the queuing_mode value is immediate (which is the default), any commands sent to the device such as kernel invocations and data transfers (e.g. parallel_for_each and copy, as we'll see in future posts), will get submitted as soon as the runtime sees fit (that is the definition of immediate). When the value of queuing_mode is deferred, the commands will be batched up. To send all buffered commands to the device for execution, there is a non-blocking flush method that you can call. If you wish to block until all the commands have been sent, there is a wait method you can call. Deferring is a more advanced scenario aimed at performance gains when you are submitting many device commands and you want to avoid the tiny overhead of flushing/submitting each command separately. Querying information Just like accelerator, accelerator_view exposes the is_debug and version properties. In fact, you can always access the accelerator object from the accelerator property on the accelerator_view class to access the accelerator interface we looked at previously. Interop with D3D (aka DX) In a later post I'll show an example of an app that uses C++ AMP to compute data that is used in pixel shaders. In those scenarios, you can benefit by integrating C++ AMP into your graphics pipeline and one of the building blocks for that is being able to use the same device context from both the compute kernel and the other shaders. You can do that by going from accelerator_view to device context (and vice versa), through part of our interop API in amp.h: *get_device, create_accelerator_view. More on those in a later post. Comments about this post by Daniel Moth welcome at the original blog.
