• Why not install Msvcr71.dll into system32?

  While looking for an authoritative source for the missing Msvcr71.dll that is needed by a few old applications, I stumbled across the MSDN article Redistribution of the shared C runtime component in Visual C++. The advice given to developers is to drop the DLL into the application's directory instead of system32 since DLLs in this directory are considered before the system paths. What can/will go wrong if I (as an administrator, not a developer) decide to take the lazy path and install Msvcr71.dll (and Msvcp71.dll while I'm at it) into the system32 directory (of 32 bit Windows XP or Windows 7 systems) instead of putting a copy in each application's directory? Is there another good solution to provide the applications with the needed DLLs that doesn't involve copying stuff to the application directories? added after first answers: I understand that incompatible API changes may have been made to the mentioned DLLs, but pretty much every mention of incompatibilities I have found using Google had to do with games or video codecs. Right now, I expect that the risk of breakage is pretty small. Am I missing something?

• Looking for a new, free firewall (Sunbelt has a huge hole)

  I've been using Sunbelt Personal Firewall v. 4.5 (previously Kerio). I've discovered that blocking Firefox connections in the configuration doesn't stop EXISTING Firefox connections. (See my post here yesterday http://superuser.com/questions/132625/sunbelt-firewall-4-5-wont-block-firefox) The "stop all traffic" may work on existing connections - but I'm done testing, as I need to be able to be selective, at any time. I was using the free version, so the "web filtering" option quit working after some time (mostly blocking ads and popups), but I didn't use that anyway. I used the last free version of Kerio before finally having to go to Sunbelt, because Kerio had an unfixed bug where you'd eventually get the BSOD and have to reset Kerio's configuration and start over (configure everything again). So I'm looking for a new Firewall. I don't like ZoneAlarm at all (no offense to all it's users that may be here - personal taste). I need the following: (Sunbelt has all these, except *) - 1. Be able to block in/out to localhost (trusted)/internet selectively for each application with a click (so there's 4 click boxes for each application) [*that effects everything immediately, regardless of what's already connected]. When a new application attempts a connection, you get an allow/deny/remember windows. - 2. Be able to easily set up filter rules for 'individual application'/'all applications,' by protocol, port/address (range), local, remote, in, out. [*Adding a filter rule also doesn't block existing connections in Sunbelt. That needs to work too.] - 3. Have an easy-to-get-to way to "stop all traffic" (like a right click option on the running icon in the task bar). - 4. Be able to set trusted/internet in/out block/allowed (4 things per item) for each of IGMP, ping, DNS, DHCP, VPN, and broadcasts. - 5. Define locahost as trusted/untrusted, define adapter connections as trusted/untrusted. - 6. Block incoming connetions during boot-up and shutdown. - 7. Show existing connections, including local & remote ip/port, protocol, current speed, total bytes transferred, and local ports opened for Listening. - 8. An Intrusion Prevention System which blocks (optionally select each one) known intrustions (long list). - 9. Block/allow applications from starting other applications (deny/allow/remember window). Wish list: A way of knowing what svchost.exe is doing - who is actually using it/calling it. I allowed it for localhost, and selectively allowed it for internet each time the allow/deny window came up. Thanks for any help/suggestions. (I'm using Windows XP SP3.)

  Some applications support proxy (http proxy or socks proxy), and some are not. For browsers, I can specify proxy server in the preferences/options dialog, and other applications may be able to configure proxy servers in config files. For general purpose, can I invoke a command using a specific proxy? Like following: $ proxy-exec --type sock5 --server 1.2.3.4:8000 -- wget/ftp ... I'm using Ubuntu Maverick. P.S. In win32, it can be implemented by hijacking the socket dlls, maybe, I'm not familiar with Linux programming, but I guess it's possible in Linux. though.

• How can I determine what is causing SQL Server 2008 Express to hang Windows 7?

  I have SQL Server Express 2008 installed on a Windows 7 (32-bit) developer workstation. Whenever I run an application that accesses SQL Server the Windows 7 shell hangs when the application closes. Applications like Windows Explorer and Task Manager become completely unresponsive. The task bar will not allow any interaction. The only way to recover the system is to power cycle. Two of the applications in use when this happens are NUnit and SQL Server Management Studio. NUnit always runs the unit tests that interact with the database fine. SQL Server Management Studio will sometimes cause the problem while trying to explore the database. The Windows event log does not show any events that are obviously connected to the problem. I have reverted and reinstalled SQL Server Express 2008 several times. What can be done to identify what is causing SQL Server Express 2008 to hang the Windows 7 shell?

  I have two web servers behind a F5 load balancer. Each web server has identical applications to the other. There was no issue until the config of the load balancer changed from source address persistence to least connections. Now in some applications I receieve this error Server Error in '/' Application. Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Web.HttpException: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. Source Error: The source code that generated this unhandled exception can only be shown when compiled in debug mode. To enable this, please follow one of the below steps, then request the URL: Add a "Debug=true" directive at the top of the file that generated the error. • How do I toggle the wifi hardware switch for a Dell XPS 17 L702X?

  Every now and then, I disable my wireless via the menu icon in Ubuntu. Then, when I try to enable the wifi, it tells me that "wireless is disabled" or "wireless is disabled by hardware switch". There is a red icon on the F2 key that looks like a wireless icon, and in Windows, pressing the (red) Fn key and F2 toggles the wifi. This does not work in Ubuntu, leaving me no clear way to turn wifi back on. How can I restart wifi in Ubuntu?

• Unable to download a file using drag&drop

  I've been downloading images from the Internet doing drag&drop while holding the Ctrl key. Using Google Chrome, and of course Nautilus, it used to work fine. But I recently had problems with packages and now every time I do that a warning menu appears showing this message: The specified location is not supported Probably I removed the packaged which allowed me to download content... can anybody help me? Note: Downloading doing right-click works, but I use more drag&drop.

• Hosted EBS 11i Integration Repository Temporarily Offline

  Most developers know that they can integrate their external applications with the E-Business Suite via the business service interfaces and SOA service endpoints documented in the E-Business Suite's Integration Repository.  This is shipped as part of EBS 12.  Until recently, it was provided as a hosted environment on the Oracle.com domain for EBS 11i. Unfortunately, we identified some standards-related issues in the process of switching from the existing server that hosts the EBS 11i environment to a new one, notably in the area of accessibility. Some of those issues will require coding changes to resolve.  Given our focus on EBS 12.2 right now, it may take some time to prioritize this relative to our other existing commitments. In the meantime, we are required to suspend access to the EBS 11i Integration Repository.  I don't have a firm schedule for getting this back online yet, but you're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog.   I'm about to reinstall Windows, so I thought that I'd try Ubuntu out on a partition just for fun. My question is, how large should my partitions be for each of them? I know this various depending on what you use, so i'll give you a general idea of what I have, and what I have in mind. I'm currently running: Windows 7 Professional (64bit) RAM: 4GB CPU: 2.5Ghz Quad Core processor HDD: 500GB GPU: 1GB Nvidia GeForce I have around 130GB in Steam games, and some heavier applications like Photoshop CS6, Sony Vegas Pro 11. But other Applications I use are: Chrome Skype Dxtory Fraps OpenOffice BitTorrent and other assorted smaller programs. So, I was thinking that I would give my Windows partition about 150-200GB, my Ubuntu Partition around 20GB, and the rest to shared storage. I'm not really sure if I'd need more or less on Ubuntu, because I've never used it and I'm not really sure what kind of apps i'd be using over there. This would also be a clean install, so I'd be wiping my HDD, creating the Partitions in GParted, then installing Windows with Ubuntu following that. Any critique you could give me? Maybe explanations to what the /root, /boot and /home partitions I hear are about? Thanks in advanced if you actually read this lengthy thing! Any help is appreciated. (x

I have some in depth ideas that I would like to go on to develop individually and sell under my own company name. Does anyone with any experience in this process have any information with regards to the route to take and process of setting things up so that I may be able to sell my applications? Also any information regarding copyrighting the material would be excellent. I am looking for the easiest way to set up a business that will allow me to have a name in which I can start selling applications to a variety of sources under. • Button "Add" is disabled in VPN Connection's dialog

  I've just installed elementaryos-jupiter. (It's based on Ubuntu 10.10) I've entered VPN Connections' menu (nm - VPN Connections - Configure VPN) And there should be button "Add" - it is, but it's disabled (I can't press on it) I'm connecting via ethernet (LAN in a students' hostel) and we get internet via VPN connection (It worked for me in Ubuntu for a few years) Any suggestions? I've asked on IRC of elementaryos (there were few people) but they said that VPN is out-of-box, and it should work - they never met this.

• Change color of Date and Weather app in Ubuntu 12.04 & Mate

  I have recentely installed Ubuntu 12.04 and as I am a truly Gnome 2 lover I also switched from Unity to Mate. The font color of the Weather/Date applet is barely visible so I was wondering how I can change it. I Already tried to explore all the options shown in the menu when I right-click on the applet, but apparently there's no such feature. So is there anything I could do in order to customize the font color in order to make the text more readable?

• .NET vs Windows 8: Rematch!

  So, although you will be able to use your existing .NET skills to develop Metro apps, it turns out Microsoft are limiting Visual Studio 2011 Express to Metro-only. From the Express website: Visual Studio 11 Express for Windows 8 provides tools for Metro style app development. To create desktop apps, you need to use Visual Studio 11 Professional, or higher. Oh dear. To develop any sort of non-Metro application, you will need to pay for at least VS Professional. I suspect Microsoft (or at least, certain groups within Microsoft) have a very explicit strategy in mind. By making VS Express Metro-only, developers who don't want to pay for Professional will be forced to make their simple one-shot or open-source application in Metro. This increases the number of applications available for Windows 8 and Windows mobile devices, which in turn make those platforms more attractive for consumers. When you use the free VS 11 Express, instead of paying Microsoft, you provide them a service by making applications for Metro, which in turn makes Microsoft's mobile offering more attractive to consumers, increasing their market share. Of course, it remains to be seen if developers forced to jump onto the Metro bandwagon will simply jump ship to Android or iOS instead. At least, that's what I think is going on. With Microsoft, who really knows?

• server performance metrics report and practicality

  I have a need of preparing web server (apache-php) performance report containing important metrics like CPU usage, disk io, memory usage on user basis. Couple of domains are hosted in the same server and they run from separate users using fcgi. The reason being sometimes some hosted applications take lots of cpu usage, making the server slow for other applications (running as separate users). i am planning to develop scripts for this, as i can't seem to find any simple utilities for this purpose. This script will take snapshots of the user wise metrics at defined periods say 15 minutes and record it. Any abnormalities will be reported via emails. How practical is that? also would be interesting to know what else need to be recorded.

• Web Farm Application deployment best practices

  Hi All, We are having a web farm which hosts multiple ASP.Net applications. We typically have 4 servers on the farm. The dilemma which i am having is in terms of capacity issue of the farm. Lets say i have currently got 200 apps in total. Should I deploy all 200 apps on all 4 servers (i.e. all the servers in the farm are identical) or should i split the applications between 2 sets of server and create 2 smaller farms so that i can then manage the application based on its criticality and usage etc. Any best practices in this area would be highly appreciated. • No MAU required on a T4

  Cryptic background One of the powerful features of the T-series servers is its hardware crypto acceleration, which dramatically speeds up the compute intensive algorithms needed to encrypt and decrypt data. Previously, administrators setting up logical domains on older T-series servers had to explicitly assign crypto resources (called "MAU" for historical reasons from the T1 chip that had "modular arithmetic units") to domains that had a significant crypto workload (say, an SSL based web server). This could be an administrative burden, as you had to choose which domains got the crypto units, and issue the appropriate ldm set-mau N mydomain commands. The T4 changes things The T4 is fast. Really fast. Its clock rate and out-of-order (OOO) execution that provides the single-thread performance that T-series machines previously did not have. If you have any preconceptions about T-series performance, or SPARC in general, based on the older servers (which, it must be said, were absolutely outstanding for multi-threaded applications), those assumptions are now obsolete. The T4 provides outstanding. performance for all kinds of workload, as illustrated at https://blogs.oracle.com/bestperf. While we all focused on this (did I mention the T4 is fast?), another feature of the T4 went largely unnoticed: The T4 servers have crypto acceleration "just built in" so administrators no longer have to assign crypto accelerator units to domains - it "just happens". This is way way better since you have crypto everywhere by default without having to manage it like a discrete and limited resource. It's a feature of the processor, like doing an integer add. With T4, there is no management necessary, you just have HW crypto everywhere all the time seamlessly. This change hasn't been widely advertised, and some administrators have wondered why there were unable to assign a MAU to a domain as they did with T2 and T3 machines. The answer is that there is no longer any separate MAU, so you don't have to take any action at all - just leave the default of 0. Summary Besides being much faster than its predecessors, the T4 also integrates hardware crypto acceleration so its seamlessly available to applications, whether domains are being used or not. Administrators no longer have to control how they are allocated - it "just happens"

• Can spell checking be disabled by default on OS X?
