  • Project Showcase: SaaS Web Apps Hits a Home Run with New SCMS Database

    We love seeing projects from start to finish, and we’re happy to share the latest example with you. Who: SaaS Web Apps – they use Software as a Service to create web applications that look and feel like desktop applications. What: SaaS Web Apps needed to build a Sports Contract Management System (SCMS) for one of its customers, Premier Stinson Sports. Why: The SCMS database is used for collecting, analyzing and recording college coach and athletic directors’ employment and contract data. The Challenge: Premier Stinson Sports works with a number of partners, each with its own needs and unique requirements. For example, USA Today uses the system to provide cutting edge news analysis while The National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School uses it to for the latest sports contract data and student analysis. In addition, the system needed to be secure due to the sensitivity of the data; it was essential that the user security and permissions be easily configurable. As always, performance was a key factor, especially with the intense reporting and analytical capabilities for this project. Because of this, most of the processing had to be done on a dedicated server but the project called for the richness and responsiveness of a desktop application. The Solution: To execute the project, SaaS Web Apps used APS.Net-based Visual WebGui from Gizmox, combined with SQL Server 2008 and SQL Reporting Services. This combination resulted in a quick deployment for SaaS Web Apps’ customers. The Result: The completed project gave each partner the scalability and availability of a web application with the performance and security of a desktop application. As an example, USA Today pulls data from this database to give readers the latest sports stats – Salary analysis of 2010 Football Bowl Subdivision Coaches.   • LibGDX - Textures rendering at wrong position

    Update 2: Let me further explain my problem since I think that i didn't make it clear enough: The Y-coordinates on the bottom of my screen should be 0. Instead it is the height of my screen. That means the "higher" i touch/click the screen the less my y-coordinate gets. Above that the origin is not inside my screen, atleast not the 0 y-coordinate. Original post: I'm currently developing a tower defence game for fun by using LibGDX. There are places on my map where the player is or is not allowed to put towers on. So I created different ArrayLists holding rectangles representing a tile on my map.   • Cannot boot from K/Ubuntu install disk on my UEFI system

    I just got a new system and have been trying to get it set up w/ Win7 & Kubuntu dual-boot, but I've got a major problem. The BIOS of my motherboard (an Asus Crosshair 990FX) is strictly UEFI -- there is no legacy support mode available. I've been reading up on how to get Kubuntu installed in UEFI mode but no matter what I try I cannot seem to even boot into my install CD/USB key properly. I can get as far as the selection screen ("Try Kubuntu", "Install Kubuntu"...) but this screen starts off not appearing correctly. If I try moving the cursor around it sometimes seems to correct itself and show me my choices. But once I select "Try Kubuntu" it starts loading, the screen goes black and then proceeds to flicker -- about once every 5-10 seconds or so. This continues indefinitely. I've tried this with both Kubuntu & Ubuntu installation media, even the AMD64+Mac Ubuntu variety that is supposed to be a lot more flexible w.r.t. UEFI. The only hint I've had that the system might have booted correctly is a little drum sound that plays when booting from the Ubuntu install disk. Well, that and the fact that when I hit my system's power button it seems to shut down correctly, even ejecting the CD at the end. This might be a video driver issue; my system has two nVidia 550's, one of which is attached to my primary monitor. (The secondary isn't hooked up yet.) I'll keep looking over similar questions but any advice would be greatly appreciated. UPDATE: I've tried booting into my 12.04 install CD twice now, each time using two different options supplied by my BIOS. One seemed to offer the ability to boot into my CD under UEFI mode -- this didn't even produce the initial boot menu. The other method offers the ability to boot into my CD NOT under UEFI mode. This DOES produce the boot menu, but after this point it seems I still cannot get to a proper video mode to see what's going on.

  • What is hiberfil.sys and How Do I Delete It?

    You’re no doubt reading this article because there’s a gigantic hiberfil.sys file sitting in the root of your drive, and you want to get rid of it to free up some space… but you can’t! Luckily, you actually can delete it, and today we’ll show you how. The more memory you have in your PC, the bigger the file will be. So What is hiberfil.sys Anyway? Windows has two power management modes that you can choose from: one is Sleep Mode, which keeps the PC running in a low power state so you can almost instantly get back to what you were working on. The other is Hibernate mode, which completely writes the memory out to the hard drive, and then powers the PC down entirely, so you can even take the battery out, put it back in, start back up, and be right back where you were. Hibernate mode uses the hiberfil.sys file to store the the current state (memory) of the PC, and since it’s managed by Windows, you can’t delete the file. So if you never use it, and want to disable Hibernate mode, keep reading. Personally I stick with Sleep Mode the vast majority of the time, but I do use Hibernate quite often. Disable Hibernate (and Delete hiberfil.sys) in Windows 7 or Vista You’ll need to open an administrator mode command prompt by right-clicking on the command prompt in the start menu, and then choosing Run as Administrator. Once you’re there, type in the following command: powercfg -h off You should immediately notice that the Hibernate option is gone from the Shut down menu. You’ll also notice that the file is magically gone! For more about dealing with Hibernate like setting how long it takes to head into Hibernate mode, you can check out our article on How to Manage Hibernate Mode in Windows 7. Disabling Hibernate Mode in Windows XP It’s a lot easier in Windows XP to get rid of Hibernate mode… in fact, we’ve already covered it before, but we’ll cover it again. Just head into Control Panel –> Power Options, and then find the Hibernate tab. Uncheck the box, reboot your PC, and then you can delete the hiberfil.sys file.   • How to mount a network drive?

    Ok so I'm trying to set-up a home file server. I'm thinking about just setting it up as an FTP server, no particular reason other than I'm familiar with FTP and samba tends to be very frustrating. Basically the set-up I'm going for, is to be-able to create multiple user accounts for the server and restrict or allow access to specific folders on each user. FTP is the only way (that I know of) to accomplish a set-up like that. My question is how can I mount an FTP server as a drive in Ubuntu so that all my applications can access it just like any other driver or folder. An example would be downloading 12.10 via torrent when it comes out, I would like to be able to tell transmission to just download the file straight to my ftp server. I know how to do this in Windows, its actually very easy. But I cant figure it out in Ubuntu. I have tried using the "connect to server" option in nautilus, and it works, but it doesn’t give me the result I want, most applications don’t see the folder, while others can. Also I am open to options other than FTP if anyone has any suggestions. I've looked into FreeNAS but that doesn’t seem to allow me to control the user accounts the way I want to. Then after all is said and done I would still need a way to mount the shares as a drive in Ubuntu. The ability to mount network drives in windows is one of my favourite features, but seeing how Ubuntu is now my daily OS and has been for about 4 years, I really need a way to accomplish the same thing in Ubuntu. Also a GUI would be preferable, seeing as there will be multiple people using this server, I would like it to be as easy as possible. EDIT: this link here seems to be almost exactly what I'm wanting to do, if I could find a GUI that can do this ill be almost set. then I would just need to find a way to hide specific folders from certain users.

  • how to set global PATH on OS X?

    I'd like to append to the global PATH variable on OS X so that all user shells and GUI applications get the same PATH environment. I know I can append to the path in shell startup scripts, but those settings are not inherited by GUI applications. The only way I found so far is to redefine the PATH environment variable in /etc/launchd.conf: setenv PATH /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/my/path I coulnd't figure out a way to actually append to PATH in launchd.conf. I'm a bit worried about this method, but so far this is the only thing that works. Does anyone know of a better way?

  • How to build a good service layer in ASP.NET?

    I have looked through some questions, technologies for building a good service layer but I have some questions regarding this that I need help with. First some information of what I have for requirements. We currently have a number of web applications that talk to each other in a spiderweb looking way (all talking to each other in a confusing way via webservices and database data). We want to change this so that all applications go through a service layer where we can work more with cache and encapsulate common functionality and more. We want this layer to also have a Web API so that 3rd party clients can consume information from the service. The problem I see is that if we build the service layer with say MVC4 Web API don't we need to communicate between the application using the webAPI meaning we have to construct URLs and consume JSON/Xml. That does not sound too effective. I assume a better method would be working with entities and WCF to communicate between the application but then we might loose the Web API magic? So the question is if there is a way to consume a service layer as both a Web API (JSON/XML) and as a more backend service layer with entities. If we are forced to use 2 different service layers we might have to duplicate some functionality and other bad things. Hope the question is clear enough and please ask if you need any more information.

  • Vmware Server Console stops responding to clicks

    I had installed vmware-server-console just fine. But when yoou open it an as soon as you click in a virtual machine, thats it, the app stop working but not freeze, it just stops recognizing where you click, everywhere you click it puts the cursor inside the VM, you cant switch VMs, cant do rigth clic on the left menu, theres not even the toolbar. I try login in with a classic ubuntu session, but this behavior persist. Is there a way to fix this.

  • XPS M1730 Freezing & Crashing unexpectedly

    I have a Dell XPS M1730, freshly installed with Windows 7 Professional 32-bit that every so often crashes completely unexpectedly. It need not be running any applications at all for this to happen, never mind anything particularly intensive. It also clearly is not a BSoD issue as no Minidump files are being created in the process. All drivers are up to date and have been both rolled back and then updated and the Device Manager reports no issues. There are very few applications installed on the machine and it has only been online once. It runs a minimal boot of Win7 and yet still after all of this something is making it crash. All of this suggests to me it may be more like a hardware problem but to be honest I really have no idea - so I thought I'd try here. Any thoughts...? Many thanks in advance

    I'm looking for a good tutorial for making resource files (*.rc) in MSVC++. I've been googling, and nothing has been useful in the slightest. What I'm looking for is a guide for how to actually write, manually, a *.rc file. Anything I have found so far, especially on MSDN, has only been about how to use the Visual Studio menu options to let it create resources for you. I'm not interested in that. Anyone able to help?

  • SSMS Tools Pack 3.0 is out. Full SSMS 2014 support and improved features.

    With version 3.0 the SSMS 2014 is fully supported. Since this is a new major version you'll eventually need a new license. Please check the EULA to see when. As a thank you for your patience with this release, everyone that bought the SSMS Tools Pack after April 1st, the release date of SQL Server 2014, will receive a free upgrade. You won't have to do anything for this to take effect. First thing you'll notice is that the UI has been completely changed. It's more in line with SSMS and looks less web-like. Also the core has been updated and rewritten in some places to be better suited for future features. Major improvements for this release are: Window Connection Coloring Something a lot of people have asked me over the last 2 years is if there's a way to color the tab of the window itself. I'm very glad to say that now it is. In SSMS 2012 and higher the actual query window tab is also colored at the top border with the same color as the already existing strip making it much easier to see to which server your query window is connected to even when a window is not focused. To make it even better, you can not also specify the desired color based on the database name and not just the server name. This makes is useful for production environments where you need to be careful in which database you run your queries in. Format SQL The format SQL core was rewritten so it'll be easier to improve it in future versions. New improvement is the ability to terminate SQL statements with semicolons. This is available only in SSMS 2012 and up. Execution Plan Analyzer A big request was to implement the Problems and Solutions tooltip as a window that you can copy the text from. This is now available. You can move the window around and copy text from it. It's a small improvement but better stuff will come. SQL History Current Window History has been improved with faster search and now also shows the color of the server/database it was ran against. This is very helpful if you change your connection in the same query window making it clear which server/database you ran query on. The option to Force Save the history has been added. This is a menu item that flushes the execution and tab content history save buffers to disk. SQL Snippets Added an option to generate snippet from selected SQL text on right click menu. Run script on multiple databases Configurable database groups that you can save and reuse were added. You can create groups of preselected databases to choose from for each server. This makes repetitive tasks much easier New small team licensing option A lot of requests came in for 1 computer, Unlimited VMs option so now it's here. Hope it serves you well.

  • Tools for tracking disk usage

    I manage a number of linux fileservers. These all run applications written from 0-10 years ago. As sometimes happens, a machine will come close to, or run out of disk space. Reasons include applications not rotating log files, a machine with 500GB of disk producing 150GB of new files every month that were not written to tape, databases gradually increasing in size, people doing silly things...generally a bit of chaos. Anyway, when a machine unexpectedly goes from 50% to 100% full in a couple of hours, I figure out what broke (lots of "du") and delete files or contact someone. I also can look at cacti graphs to figure out what the machine's normal disk usage is (e.g. for /home). Does anyone know of any tools that will give finer grained information on historial usage than a cacti/RRD graph? Like "/home/abc/xyz increased 50GB in the last day".

  • Passenger/Rails not releasing memory

    I have an Ubuntu server running three separate Rails (2.3.8) applications with Passenger, REE and Apache. Recently we started experiencing problems with ruby processes eating up memory and consuming entire cores on our server. Here's what we're getting... %CPU PID USER COMMAND 99.9 1717 nobody Rails: /var/www/api 99.6 5542 nobody Rails: /var/www/api 97.3 1223 nobody Rails: /var/www/api 4.7 5537 nobody Passenger ApplicationSpawner: /var/www/api 10.5 1801 nobody Rails: /var/www/api We've also seen instances where there have been over 100 instances of Apache running. These applications have been running for a few months without an of these issues, but in the last day or so we've been noticing this. The site referenced here is a Rails application that is a RESTful API so it serves many requests every minute. Any guidance on what we should be checking or looking out for would be appreciated.

  • Can't connect to memcached

    We currently have memcached running on CentOS. None of our PHP applications can connect, have tried multiple applications trying to establish access. The most informative PHP error we get is: "Memcache::get() [function.Memcache-get]: Server 127.0.0.1 (tcp 11211) failed with: Permission denied (13) in /var/www/.." memcached 1.4.5 PECL 2.25 We can telnet and it works. IP tables is full access from lo to lo. We've tried this on two different servers with both compiled version and the rpm in CentOS 5.5 and get the same result. Is there anything fairly obvious that we are missing?

  • Trouble running multiple Firefox versions on OS X Lion

    I am trying to use two versions of Firefox (11 and 13) on OS X Lion. I don't especially want to run two versions at the same time. I want to be able to run the version 11 when I choose the version 11 via the profile manager. The same for the version 13. Every time, I want to launch the version 11, the launcher launches the version 13... When I select the version 11 via the profile manager, Firefox 13 is launched. I created 2 automators apps (FF11.app and FF13.app) to launch Firefox : /Applications/Firefox11.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -no-remote -P FF11 & /dev/null & /Applications/Firefox13.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -no-remote -P FF13 & /dev/null & Any help would be greatly appreciated.   • Getting back the old alt-tab windows switching behavior in Windows 7?

    When you run more than 6 applications on Windows 7 and you press alt-TAB, icons representing the first 6 applications and the desktop appear on the first row of the grid and you can cycle with alt-TAB-TAB... through the 6 most recently used windows the usual way, but the 7th and other less recently used windows don't follow the same rules. Instead they get grouped together according to their application but disregarding whether they were recently used or not. This new behavior is mentioned here. I am very used to the old way of cycling and the new system is driving me crazy. I tend to have 20 or so windows open at one time and I frequently need to alt-tab to the 7th or 8th window on the stack but it doesn't work the same anymore. Does anyone know how to put back the old behavior, so that alt-tab-tab-tab... goes through the whole list in most-recent to least-recent order?

  • What does 1024x768X24 mean?

    I was planning to change the Plymouth screen resolution(Blame Fglrx!). When I went to GRUB-Customizer(info for that), the screen resolution menu shows (as usual) 800x600, 1024x678, 600x400, and a bunch of other things. But after I scrolled down, I saw weird screen resolutions like 1024x768 x8, 1024x768 x16, 1024x768 x24, etc. Computer screens shape like a rectangle, not a cube, so what does those extra numbers mean? Or is there a secret dimension in every computer screen that I ignored?
