• Graceful logout in dwm

  I want dwm to close all windows gracefully when I press quit hotkey. I like Unity behaviour: it displays list of windows denying logout (for example, editors with unsaved changes) and do not logout before all issues are resolved and applications are closed. By default, dwm just end X session and all running applications are killed. I was thinking about writing a script that will retrieve list of all windows, gracefully close them and wait for their processes to finish. But I even don't know how to close windows. The only way I know is using wmctrl, and this utility doesn't work with dwm.

Is there any possible ways to use it also in Ubuntu software Center? additional: I'm using mobile broadband for the internet connection,this broadband has a sim card and account number where you can download money from buying a prepaid card worth 100 pesos,300 pesos or 500 pesos, provided by our local network. We use this mobile broadband when there is no wifi connection. There are two kinds of mobile broadband, one is postpaid account and the other is prepaid account. I use prepaid account, this kind of account can load a money for transaction like data plans, from 10 pesos for 30 minutes internet connection or 200 pesos for 5 days internet connection., and this prepaid account can load 5 pesos up to thousands of pesos. Now, if this prepaid mobile broadband can provide money in pesos and has internet connection, I think it can also use it for buying goods or applications or games via internet. i think its only need a software that can detect the sim card number and the money balance for transactions. • Putty-like copy/paste

  For ages I've been using Putty when working with *nix servers, and I really got used to it's copy&paste method: select, left-click - for copy, just right-click - for paste. How can I set Ubuntu terminal the same way? I see there is a shortcuts configuration, but it does not allow me to set keys I need. Ctrl+Shift+C, Ctrl+Shift+V is just braking my fingers. I know there is a menu on right-click, but I don't need it.

• Why doesn't InkScape recognize the Ubuntu color palettes?

  InkScape 0.48.2 refuses to show my newly added Ubuntu color palettes in the color palettes selection menu. I have downloaded the Ubuntu color palettes for GIMP/InkScape from design.canonical.com, extracted the files and copied them to /usr/share/inkscape/palettes/ where all the other color palettes are. I've even made sure that all the files have the same rights, just in case. What am I missing?

• Automatically detecting temperature sensors on startup (Ubuntu 10.10)

  I am very close to achieving my goal of setting up a CPU temperature graph that is displayed in the top panel of my desktop. I have the applet and have gotten it to graph temperatures, which appear to be being sensed correctly. However, my machine doesn't find its temperature sensors by default; I have to run sudo modprobe coretemp for the sensors command to work, then log off and back in before the graph applet starts displaying my temperatures. I am wondering if I can somehow tell the kernel to load the coretemp module on startup so I don't have to keep doing these extra steps. I have tried putting this command in my startup applications, but I think its need for root permission is keeping this from working. Is there a way to set up startup applications with root permission, or some other way to ensure that this module is loaded at startup? If anyone is curious, I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo G770 laptop with a Core i5 processor and the 2.6.35 kernel.

• Play Framework Plugin for NetBeans IDE (Part 2)

  After I published part 1 of this series, the first external contribution (i.e., not by me) to the NetBeans plugin for Play Framework 2 was committed today. Yann D'Isanto added support for creating new Play projects: That completely solves a problem I was working on, in a different way altogether. I was working on creating a new wizard that would call "play new" on the command line and pass into the command line the entered name and application type (1 for Java and 2 for Scala). However, Yann's solution is better, at least in the sense in that it works, as opposed to mine which didn't, because of problems I continually had with the command line, since one needs to press Enter multiple times on the Play command line when creating new projects, which I wasn't able to simulate in my new wizard. Yann's approach is simply to follow the approach taken in the Project Type Module Tutorial, which explains how to register a project sample in the IDE. I was inspired by Yann's contribution, especially when he mentioned that one needs to build Play projects on the command line. So, I added a new menu item on the right-click of a project for building Play projects, which simply passes "play compile" to the command line for the current project: Via the IDE's main menu bar, you can also Build and Run the application, though the code for the Clean function needs to be added still, which would be a cool thing for anyone out there to add, by using all the existing code and then passing "play clean compile" to the command line. Something else that Yann added is an Options Window extension, thanks to the Options Window Module Tutorial, for registering the Play installation, which is a step forward from my hard coded solution. I changed things slightly so that, when Build or Run are selected, without a Play installation being defined, the Options window opens, displaying the tab that Yann created, shown below. Notice that there's no Browse button, which would be a simple next step for anyone else to contribute. A small tip is to use the FileChooserBuilder from the NetBeans IDE APIs when working on the Browse button: Looking forward to more contributions to the Play Framework 2 plugin for NetBeans IDE. • Positioning of Submenu under Sprite

  At http://www.shieldscompany.com, the main (blue) product menu uses a sprite and has sub-menus. Our programmer set it up so that the sub-menus are relative to the top of the browser, rather than under the sprite. On the site's sub-pages, the sub-menus appear correctly, but on the home page they appear behind a large rotating graphic. Can someone take a look at http://www.shieldscompany.com/css/nav.css and help me understand how to change this so it works properly?

  I am often running low on space on the system and home partition. I would like to see a list of installed programs and the space they take, in order to be able to make decisions on this matter. I do not mean a list with all components, 'secondary' programs and dependencies like in Synaptic, which I know can be also displayed in the Terminal -- so please do not set as duplicate of this question --, but just a list with the main programs (those that appear in the main menu) and with the space they occupy on the disk. (I use Xubuntu 12.10)

• Concurrent wireless and wired network

  Hi, I am concerned with maintaining a wireless and wired network connection on my laptop. Basically I can change the metric on each interface so that Windows prefers one connection over the other. I am wondering is following scenario possible.... Some applications uses the wireless while other applications use the wired... I want Internet Explorer (only) to use the wireless connection while Outlook and everything else uses the wired connection. Perhaps adding some lines to the routing table might work? - Adding the ip addresses of websites I want to view via the wireless connection? Many Thanks in advance for any replies!

• Safety concerns on allowing connections to MySQL with no password on localhost?

  In the case of a Linux system, is there any security concern to let MySQL users with standard privileges (that is, not the root users) connect to the database with no password from localhost? I think that enforcing a password even for localhost can add a layer of protection, since, with no password the database access would be compromised if the SSH access is itself compromised. Considering that, would it be less safe to allow no password connection to MySQL than having the same password for SSH and for MySQL? I don't know if that is to be taken into account, but we also use phpMyAdmin to let users administrate their own database. I am asking because I kinda dislike having to put our database passwords unencrypted in the source or configuration files of our applications, where they can easily be leaked unintentionally. Since our servers are configured to run our applications as the Linux user the application belongs to, I was considering allowing no password from localhost as a simple solution. So, would that be a very bad idea or not?

  Possible Duplicate: How to revert to GNOME Classic? I don't like unity so I tried Ubuntu Gnome Remix 12.10. But I feel disappointed too. - No right click on desktop. (I know there is a way to enable it). - No icon on desktop. - I want to have "applications", "palces", "systems" on top panel as before. It just takes much more steps to arrive where I want to go in default gnome 3 settings. - It seems to me that for some applications, when it is maximalized, there is no close buttons or "restore to previous size" button. In fact, it has no title bar in this case, so I can't drag the title bar to restore its previous size and move the window. So I got 3 questions here: (for those who like the way gnome work before) What difference between gnome2 and gnome3 that you prefer the way it works in gnome2? How do you change it to work in the gnome2 way? I don't like the appearance in gnome3. For those who have tried to make your gnome3 looks good, could you share how you customize your gnome3 appearance? (this is for chatting only, not a real question) Why all the main OS (Windows, Mac, Some Linux) want to integrate Desktop and Tablet with focus on Tablet? (Which means that when it is installed on a desktop, it still has tablet appearance, which makes things strange.) Do they think the personal desktop PC will become less and less?

• Is it reasonable to require passwords when users sign into my application through social media accounts?

  I've built an application that requires users to authenticate with one or more social media accounts from either Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Edit Once the user has signed in, an 'identity' for them is maintained in the system, to which all content they create is associated. A user can associate one account from each of the supported providers with this identity. I'm concerned about how to protect potential users from connecting the wrong account to their identity in our application. /Edit There are two main scenarios that could happen: User has multiple accounts on one of the three providers, and is not logged into the one s/he desires. User comes to a public or shared computer, in which the previous user left themselves logged into one of the three providers. While I haven't encountered many examples of this myself, I'm considering requiring users to password authenticate with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn whenever they are signing into our application. Is that a reasonable approach, or are there reasons why many other sites and applications don't challenge users to provide a user name and password when authorizing applications to access their social media accounts? Thanks in advance! Edit A clarification, I'm not intending to store anyone's user name and password. Rather, when a user clicks the button to sign in, with Facebook as an example, I'm considering showing an "Is this you?" type window. The idea is that a user would respond to the challenge by either signing into Facebook on the account fetched from the oauth hash, or would sign into the correct account and the oauth callback would run with the new oauth hash data.

• Ubuntu 13.10 - Wifi not re-connecting after suspend

  I upgraded the other day from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 on my ZaReason laptop, and the WiFi doesn't reconnect after suspend. In 13.04, pressing Fn+F2 turned network connections back on after suspend. The 'soft' wireless hardware switch. But in 13.10, that doesn't work, and trying to enable networking in the networking menu doesn't work either. So I have to restart every time. Any suggestions to make it work?

• List and kill running processes on Mac OS in Ctrl/Alt/Delete-like way?

  So, what do you do on a Mac when a process (as opposed to an application) is hogging CPU, swamping your machine, and you need to kill it? I know you can use top or open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and kill it from there. But what happens when the process is already using so much CPU that doing either of those tasks is impossible? On Windows, you can just do Ctrl/Alt/Delete and the process list will reliably open. So no matter how much your computer is thrashing, you always have access to the list of processes. On Mac OS, there's Cmd/Alt/Escape, which reliably shows running applications. Fine when it's an application causing the problem. But: what do you do if it's a process?

• Project Showcase: SaaS Web Apps Hits a Home Run with New SCMS Database

  We love seeing projects from start to finish, and we’re happy to share the latest example with you. Who: SaaS Web Apps – they use Software as a Service to create web applications that look and feel like desktop applications. What: SaaS Web Apps needed to build a Sports Contract Management System (SCMS) for one of its customers, Premier Stinson Sports. Why: The SCMS database is used for collecting, analyzing and recording college coach and athletic directors’ employment and contract data. The Challenge: Premier Stinson Sports works with a number of partners, each with its own needs and unique requirements. For example, USA Today uses the system to provide cutting edge news analysis while The National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School uses it to for the latest sports contract data and student analysis. In addition, the system needed to be secure due to the sensitivity of the data; it was essential that the user security and permissions be easily configurable. As always, performance was a key factor, especially with the intense reporting and analytical capabilities for this project. Because of this, most of the processing had to be done on a dedicated server but the project called for the richness and responsiveness of a desktop application. The Solution: To execute the project, SaaS Web Apps used APS.Net-based Visual WebGui from Gizmox, combined with SQL Server 2008 and SQL Reporting Services. This combination resulted in a quick deployment for SaaS Web Apps’ customers. The Result: The completed project gave each partner the scalability and availability of a web application with the performance and security of a desktop application. As an example, USA Today pulls data from this database to give readers the latest sports stats – Salary analysis of 2010 Football Bowl Subdivision Coaches.
