• security issue of Linux sudo command?

  Hello everyone, 1. I am using Red Hat Enterprise 5 Linux box. I find if a user is in /etc/sudoers file, then if the user run command with sudo, the user will run this command with root privilege (without knowing root password, the user runs sudo only need to input the user's own password in order to run a command with sudo). Is that correct understanding? 2. If yes, then is it a security hole? Since users other than root could run with root privilege? thanks in advance, George

  Can anyone help me by giving your postfix configuration file as a reference so that I can find my mistakes? I'm working on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. My goal is to set up a mailserver in a campus network. Postfix shows it is running but no mail is sent to var/spool/mail I send mail using mail command at terminal. • jQuery AJAX call not working in Webkit

  I've run into a strange issue with Webkit based browsers (both Safari and Chrome - I'm testing on a Mac) and I am not sure what is causing it. What I am trying to accomplish is: submit the form call another script to get status on the file being uploaded via the form (it's for a small upload progress meter). • Can you add a UITableViewController's TableView to another View?

  I've inserted a UITableViewController and it's corresponding UITableView into a simple IB document. The goal is to include the UITableView inside of a parent UIWindow (or UIView) with other "stuff" (anything really) adorning the table. Build a working subclass of UITableViewController filled with data Customize the UTableView and it's cells including tap targets Add the newly created UITableViewController into an IB document Drag the UITableView out of the UITableViewController and into the main UIView Wire up the UITableViewController to the UITableView Note: adding the UITableViewController in code results in the same problem When running the app in the iPhone emulator or on a device the table displays correctly, but crashes the first time you try and interact with it. A scroll, a tap, anything crashes the app. This seems to be a delegate problem, like the UITableView doesn't know how to communicate back to the UITableViewController, but I have no idea how to correct the problem. So far I have been able to get by by customizing the tableHeaderView to get layouts that suffice, but I'd really prefer to have the other technique work.

• IE9 selectAllChildren on an out-of-view element

  I am trying to replicate a service that is provided by Tynt.com that appends some text to a user's selection when copying. I understand that users don't particularly like this, but it is a client's request to append the URL and copyright notice whenever a user copies something from their website. In current browsers, I am able to do this by creating a DOM element, adding the selected text, appending the copyright text and then selecting the new node: var newSelection = document.createElement( 'div' ); newSelection.style.cssText = "height: 1px; width: 1px; overflow: hidden;"; if( window.getSelection ) { var selection = window.getSelection( ); if( selection.getRangeAt ) { var range = selection.getRangeAt( 0 ); newSelection.appendChild( range.cloneContents( ) ); appendCopyright( ); document.body.appendChild( newSelection ); selection.selectAllChildren( newSelection ); // ... remove element, return selection } } In IE9, this errors out on the selection.selectAllChildren( newSelection ) statement and I was able to figure out that this is because newSelection was effectively "hidden" from the viewport due to the styles applied in the second line above. Commenting that out works, but obviously the new node is shown to the end user. It appears that this was resolved in later versions of IE, but I am having trouble coming up with a workaround that is sufficient for IE9, a browser that I need to support. I've tried a variety of alternatives, like setting visibility: hidden;, positioning it off-screen, and trying some alternative selection functions, but they each present different problems. The error thrown by IE is: SCRIPT16389: Unspecified error.

• Programming R/Sweave for proper \Sexpr output

  Hi I'm having a bit of a problem programming R for Sweave, and the #rstats twitter group often points here, so I thought I'd put this question to the SO crowd. I'm an analyst- not a programmer- so go easy on me my first post. Here's the problem: I am drafting a survey report in Sweave with R and would like to report the marginal returns in line using \Sexpr{}. For example, rather than saying: Only 14% of respondents said 'X'. I want to write the report like this: Only \Sexpr{p.mean(variable)}$\%$ of respondents said 'X'. The problem is that Sweave() converts the results of the expression in \Sexpr{} to a character string, which means that the output from expression in R and the output that appears in my document are different. For example, above I use the function 'p.mean': p.mean<- function (x) {options(digits=1) mmm<-weighted.mean(x, weight=weight, na.rm=T) print(100*mmm) } In R, the output looks like this: p.mean(variable) >14 but when I use \Sexpr{p.mean(variable)}, I get an unrounded character string (in this case: 13.5857142857143) in my document. I have tried to limit the output of my function to 'digits=1' in the global environment, in the function itself, and and in various commands. It only seems to contain what R prints, not the character transformation that is the result of the expression and which eventually prints in the LaTeX file. as.character(p.mean(variable)) >[1] 14 >[1] "13.5857142857143" Does anyone know what I can do to limit the digits printed in the LaTeX file, either by reprogramming the R function or with a setting in Sweave or \Sexpr{}?   My organization is about to implement 802.1X on our enterprise, but we currently use PXE-based OS deployment sequences in SCCM. I'm looking for a way to continue using PXE in an 802.1X environment. Our infrastructure uses Cisco network gear running at 12.2 (or newer). We are an all Windows network and all clients support 802.1X. All new workstations have Intel AMT available (but not factory configured). In a worst case scenario, we'll use a guest vlan for OSD, but I'd rather have the OSD occur in an authenticated session. I've seen white papers that describe using AMT to act as a supplicant for PXE boot, but can't find any implementation details...

  Hello, I went through the archives here and the Wikipedia page on Project management software, but didn't find information on this type of application to manage projects: Native Windows application (don't like web-based solutions; prefer native to cross-platform) Free or affordable, ie. not an Enterprise solution Scalable from one to a few concurrent users Like MS Projet et al., a project consists in tasks which can be further divided into sub-tasks, and the whole thing is displayed in an tree list An item that has a date set (either start/due) must be displayed in a Calendar view, so it's easy to know what work must be done each day The Calendar view must somehow sync with smartphones (at least BlackBerry) At this point, the apps I know either don't provide a Calendar at all, or do but they can't sync with smartphones, which forces me to copy/paste scheduled items into Outlook so they are synced with my BlackBerry :-/ Thank you for any help.

  Hello everyone, I am using Virtual PC 2007 on Windows Vista Enterprise x86. My confusion is about the network setting for guest OS. In the network setting, I can set the network adaptor of guest OS to one of my physical network adaptors of my host OS (I have tested that it works for guest OS to use the physical network adaptor of host OS to access external network). But in this way, 1. since both host OS and guest OS will use the same physical network adaptor, will there be any conflicts (e.g. same H/W serves two OS)? 2. will guest OS share a part of network bandwidth of the host OS of the physical network adaptor? 3. • How can I have Windows 8 go to the desktop by default?

  I've played around a smidge with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in a VirtualBox VM and I think the improvements under the hood may be worth tolerating the Metro UI crap. I don't like that the entire screen changes to something I don't care about when I hit the Windows key and start typing but I can deal with it. The one thing I cannot stand, though, is that it starts in the Metro interface by default. I have to hit the "Desktop" tile to get to a normal interface, and while I can hit "escape" to go back to the desktop and dismiss Metro, it doesn't work when you first log in. When you first log in, you have to hit that "Desktop" tile. I know that the Enterprise versions of Windows 8 will go to the desktop by default. I don't know but I would assume that there's probably some registry key that would handle this. Has anyone figured that out yet?

• Insert video clip in a lyx presentation and play it in GNU/Linux.

  How can I insert a video clip into a presentation created in Lyx? Have seen http://www.latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=48. It works, but there the video starts in the background in an external player. I would prefer it to be played in the presentation itself. If an external player is used it it should at least start in the foreground. But the presentation takes the foreground. Using evince in GNU/linux as pdf viewer. Beamer is used as a presentation template. Is it possible to play a video file in an embedded player in the presentation itself? Created an example presentation. • DNS servers via RA in IPv6

  Some time ago, RFC 6106 was created, which states how a router tells the clients about the DNS server to be used. It is a new standard, it has to be implemented, which needs time etc. I'm courious about the need for it: wouldn't have it been better to define a "globally valid" anycast address for DNS? Queries would be sent to this address and would be promoted along the default route until there is a host which claims to be responsible for it. In an enterprise network, that would be a central DNS server (or even more, on really big companies); in a SOHO network, it would either be the router or the DNS server of the ISP, in a root server hosting data center, it would be the DNS of the hoster, etc. What do I see wrong here? Do I have a wrong view of the anycast concept?

  I'm interested in hearing about design strategies you have used with non-relational "nosql" databases - that is, the (mostly new) class of data stores that don't use traditional relational design or SQL (such as Hypertable, CouchDB, SimpleDB, Google App Engine datastore, Voldemort, Cassandra, SQL Data Services, etc.). They're also often referred to as "key/value stores", and at base they act like giant distributed persistent hash tables. Specifically, I want to learn about the differences in conceptual data design with these new databases. What's easier, what's harder, what can't be done at all? Have you come up with alternate designs that work much better in the non-relational world? Have you hit your head against anything that seems impossible? Have you bridged the gap with any design patterns, e.g. to translate from one to the other? Do you even do explicit data models at all now (e.g. in UML) or have you chucked them entirely in favor of semi-structured / document-oriented data blobs? Do you miss any of the major extra services that RDBMSes provide, like relational integrity, arbitrarily complex transaction support, triggers, etc? I come from a SQL relational DB background, so normalization is in my blood. That said, I get the advantages of non-relational databases for simplicity and scaling, and my gut tells me that there has to be a richer overlap of design capabilities. What have you done?   I am currently learning F# and functional programming in general (from a C# background) and I have a question about using .net CLR objects during my processing. The best way to describe my problem will be to give an example: let xml = new XmlDocument() |> fun doc -> doc.Load("report.xml"); doc let xsl = new XslCompiledTransform() |> fun doc -> doc.Load("report.xsl"); doc let transformedXml = new MemoryStream() |> fun mem -> xsl.Transform(xml.CreateNavigator(), null, mem); mem This code transforms an XML document with an XSLT document using .net objects. Note XslCompiledTransform.Load works on an object, and returns void. Also the XslCompiledTransform.Transform requires a memorystream object and returns void. The above strategy used is to add the object at the end (the ; mem) to return a value and make functional programming work. When we want to do this one after another we have a function on each line with a return value at the end: let myFunc = new XmlDocument("doc") |> fun a -> a.Load("report.xml"); a |> fun a -> a.AppendChild(new XmlElement("Happy")); a Is there a more correct way (in terms of functional programming) to handle .net objects and objects that were created in a more OO environment? The way I returned the value at the end then had inline functions everywhere feels a bit like a hack and not the correct way to do this. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• How can I transform XML to invalid XML using XSLT?

  I need to transform a valid XML document to the OFX v1.0.2 format. This format is more or less XML, but it's technically invalid and therefore cannot be parsed as XML. I'm having trouble getting my Xml transformation working because the .Net XslCompiledTransform object insists on interpreting the XSL as an XML document (which is fair enough). If I escape the xml-ish tags using &lt; and &gt, they get removed when I download the file. • Replacing a Namespace with XSLT

  Hi I want to work around a 'bug' in certain RSS-feeds, which use an incorrect namespace for the mediaRSS module. I tried to do it by manipulating the DOM programmatically, but using XSLT seems more flexible to me. • Correlating traditional Windows joystick axes with HID

  I'm a bit confused on the description of joystick axes and I'm hoping that someone has a link or document which could help clear my confusion. I'm not a Windows guy, so trying to port some traditional Windows gameport code has me a bit confused. Two questions: 1) Can anyone confirm to what axis the traditional U axis would be? I saw one document describe it as "the axis for rudder pedals" leading me to believe it would be Rz. 2) Can anyone describe in more detail the typical usages of the V and Vbr axes? I understand the descriptions are "vector" and "relative vector,' respectively, but I'm having difficult visualizing what that means in terms of a physical device. All enlightenment and documentation pointers welcome.

• Setting up multiple wireless access points on same network

  I'd like to add wireless to my network, and I need multiple access points to cover the whole area. I'd like to set them up so that there's only one "wireless network" that the clients see, and it switches them as seamlessly as possible between access points as they wander around (if that's not possible, then at least have it so that they don't need to set up the security by hand on each one the first time, if possible). I've searched online, and there are quite a few sets of mixed instructions (same vs different SSID, frequency, does the security need to match exactly, etc.). Can somebody who has some experience doing this please let me know what they did? I imagine it's pretty simple, but there seems to be no clear cut "yes, you can do this" online, even though I know you can. I have a mid-size LAN with about 20 workstations and two Domain Controllers on it. Also, I'll be doing this with consumer wireless components, if it makes a difference, not enterprise-level components (ie. Linksys rather than Cisco).
