• Is there a faster way to remove un-referenced controls from a Form's designer file?

  I started looking into the designer file of one of my Forms and noticed that a lot of the old controls I thought I had deleted are still being instantiated but are not actually used on the form. Is there any easy way to clean up these controls from the designer file that are not being used? Right now I've printed out a list of all the private fields at the bottom of the designer file that reference the controls of the form. I'm going down the list one by one trying to determine if the control is actually used or not, and then deleting those that I find are not on the form. The document outline is useful for figuring out what controls are on the form, but this is still a rather tedious process. Does anyone have a better way?

This field needs to show the total for the preceding 30 days e.g. 1. if Date for a particular record is 2nd Dec then it will be the total for the period 3rd Nov - 2nd Dec inclusive. 2. if Date for a particular record is 1st Dec then it will be the total for the period 2nd Nov - 1st Dec inclusive. • Optimising a query for Top 5% of users

  On my website, there exists a group of 'power users' who are fantastic and adding lots of content on to my site. However, their prolific activities has led to their profile pages slowing down a lot. For 95% of the other users, the SPROC that is returning the data is very quick. It's only for these group of power users, the very same SPROC is slow. How does one go about optimising the query for this group of users? You can assume that the right indexes have already been constructed. EDIT: Ok, I think I have been a bit too vague. To rephrase the question, how can I optimise my site to enhance the performance for these 5% of users. Given that this SPROC is the same one that is in use for every user and that it is already well optimised, I am guessing the next steps are to explore caching possibilities on the data and application layers?

• Visual Studio 2010 Crashes when Creating or Editing a Report (.rdlc) with the Report Designer

  This is an issue I had with VS 2010 RC and was hoping would be solved with the first official release. Sadly it wasn't. What I have is a number of reports originally created with VS 2008. When opening any of these for editing in VS 2010's Report Designer VS hangs for about two minutes and then shuts down. Same happens when creating a new report using the wizard. Only difference is that a dialog opens up showing a "Loading ..." message then hangs for about the same amount of time and crashes. Running devenv /log gives nothing of value. The Windows Application Event Viewer shows only this: Faulting application name: devenv.exe, version: 10.0.30319.1, time stamp: 0x4ba1fab3 Faulting module name: clr.dll, version: 4.0.30319.1, time stamp: 0x4ba1d9ef Exception code: 0xc00000fd Fault offset: 0x00001919 Faulting process id: 0xc38 Faulting And this: .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.4927 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (6F551CF2) (0) Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution? • Using DirectX Effect11 with Visual Studio 2012

  I recently updated to Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate. I was programming previously with DirectX 11 June 2010 SDK and want to continue to do so using Visual Studio 2012. However, I discovered that VS2012 comes with its own DirectX SDK (in Windows Kit 8.0) and I've been trying to migrate my code using the newer versions of d3d11. Everything went fine until I try to use effect files in my project (.fx files). I had to compile the Effects11 Sample in the DirectX SDK using VS2012 and link the lib file in my project. That went fine too. However, when I compile my project the function D3DX11CreateEffectFromMemory returns a E_NOINTERFACE error (no such interface is supported). Can anyone tell me why is that? Note that I'm using the d3d11.lib from the Windows Kit and the d3dx11.lib from the DirectX SDK. Perhaps I shouldn't mix them? However, everything else works fine when I mix them, except for the effect file creation. Any help would be appreciated. P.S. I don't know if this is helpful but just so you know, if I add an additional library directory in the project settings of "DirectXSDKInstallPath\lib\x86\" it works. Why is that? Does it mean I'm using the older version of the libraries? This will give a ton of warnings about redefined headers in winerror.h

• Ajax Minifier Visual Studio include all javascript files

  I am using the Ajax Minifier http://www.ajaxprojects.com/ajax/tutorialdetails.php?itemid=766 and have embedded it in the csproj file for use in Visual Studio 2008 (not the free version). I have two folders, Content and Scripts, directly under the root of the project. Also, the Content folder has subfolders, and would like to include all of these as well (if I have to manually add each subfolder that is fine as well). Currently, my csproj file looks like this (and is included within the Project tags as instructed). There are no build errors, the files simply do not get minified. (I've enabled Project - View All files) <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath)\Microsoft\MicrosoftAjax\ajaxmin.tasks" /> <Target Name="AfterBuild"> <ItemGroup> <JS Include="Scripts\*.js" Exclude="Scripts\*.min.js;"/> <JS Include="Content\**\*.js" Exclude="Content\**\*.min.js;"/> </ItemGroup> <AjaxMin SourceFiles="@(JS)" SourceExtensionPattern="\.js$" TargetExtension=".min.js" /> </Target> How would I edit the csproj file in order to include these folders?

• Unable to fetch initial output of "defrag" commad in Windows Server 2008 R2 in WOW64 environment.

  Hi All, [Application & code back ground] I have an MFC application which is executing on Windows Server 2008 R2 in WOW64 environment. In which on user input it defragments the selected drive on the disk. I initiated the process(.i.e. cmd /c defrag –v c:) of defragmentation using the CreateProcess() API, along with this to display output of the process on the main screen I created the pipe using CreatePipe() API. I used PeekNamedPipe() & ReadFile() API to get the output and display. [Problem Area] When the process is launched I am not getting the initial output as below: Microsoft Disk fragmenter Copyright © 2007 Microsoft Crop. Invoking defragmentation on (C:)…. I constantly monitor the output of the process while it is under progress but not able to get any thing as output in the pipe. It seem the process is not doing any thing and appears as if the application is not responding. But after certain period of time, once the process is about to completed I get result along with the initial data. • C++ Formatting like visual studio c# formatting

  I like the way Visual studio (2008) format C# code; unfortunately it seems it doesn't behave in the same way when writing C++ code. For example, when I write a code in this way: class Test { public: int x; Test() {this->x=20;} ~Test(){} }; in C# (ok this is C++ but you can understand what I mean), this part: Test() {this->x=20;} Will become Test() { this->x=20; } This is obviusly a stupid example, but there are a lot of things where putting brackets in correct position, indenting code and other things with my own hands becomes boring. I can obviusly change editor if you suggest me a good one for C++ code, I would like to find something with these features: Intellisense (like vs, at least similiar) Custom class coloring (in c# they are cyan, why are they black in c++?) Wordwrap (possibly) Documentation when you mouse over a method/variable Auto formatting (when you close a bracket like "}" in c# you'll get everything well formatted) obviusly I can find other features, but this is what is in my mind at the moment.   Whenever I try to import my Eclipse project to Android Studio I get the following error : You are using an old, unsupported version of Gradle. Please use version 1.8 or greater. Please point to a supported Gradle version in the project's Gradle settings or in the project's Gradle wrapper (if applicable.) Consult IDE log for more details (Help | Show Log) Im using Android Studio 0.3 and Ubuntu, I also tried it on a Windows 8 box with fresh install but getting the same error. I'm using default gradle wrapper and I tried checking and unchecking auto import option. Is this a bug? How can I get around it. How do I update gradle to 1.8 or check the current gradle version? • Getting Visual Studio macros in console app

  In a Visual Studio extension, you can get the default include paths for all projects with C# code like: String dirs = dte2.get_Properties("Projects", "VCDirectories"); where dte2 is the Visual Studio application object. Usually, those directories contain macros like $(INCLUDE). You can expand those macros by looking at dte2.Solution.Projects, finding the relevant project in that collection; from the project, look at project.Configurations, find the relevant configuration, and call its Evaluate method. In VS2005/VS2008, there's a .vssettings file that contains the VCDirectories. In VS2010, there's a property sheet with the same information. A console application can just parse those files -- great. But how can you expand the macros? As a first step, I tried instantiating a VCProjectEngine object in a console app, but that just resulted in a COM failure. So I don't know how to instantiate a VCProject object in order to follow the same strategy I used in a VS extension. Where are the macro bindings stored?

• Why can't nvcc find my Visual C++ installation?

  I'm running Windows 7 Pro x64 on a Core i5 with a NVIDIA 3100m, which is CUDA compatible. I've tried installing both the 32-bit and 64-bit CUDA toolkits from NVIDIA, unfortunately from with either of them I cannot compile anything; nvcc says "cannot find a supported cl version. Only MSVC 8.0 and MSVC 9.0 are supported". I have the x86 and x86-64 compilers installed via the Windows 7 SDK (compiler version 15.00.30729.01 for both arches). Both compilers are operating correctly; I've built and tested C and C++ code using them. I've tried running nvcc from command shells set up for both 32 bit and 64 bit compilation, and using the -ccbin command line option to nvcc to point it at the Visual C++ install directory. What is the right way of handling this setup? Is there some way I make nvcc be more verbose about what is going on? The -v flag isn't terrible helpful. Ideally some way to make it show what it is finding versus what it's expecting to find. Will this work better if I install Visual C++ Express instead? Or is only a commercial version of VC++ supported for use with CUDA?

• Assembly installed into the GAC not showing up in Visual Studio

  This sounds related to this question, but they aren't the same thing. That question had no assemblies showing up. Mine has everything except the specific one I installed. I'm hoping someone has a solution to this... am I doing something wrong? Or did I find some bug in VS? I am using Visual Studio 2010 Professional Beta 2 on Windows 7 Ultimate. I just downloaded Rhino Mocks and decided to install it into the GAC using the command-line utility GACUTIL. I then rebooted. • Problems referencing build output from TFS Build and Visual Studio

  Here's what I'm trying to do: I have two solutions - one for my main application and its associated projects and another for my database (VS .dbproj) and its associated projects. What I'd like to do is include the output from the database project (a .dbschema and some SQL scripts) in my WiX installer (which exists in the main application solution.) This involves having TFS build the DB solution immediately before the main application solution. I've got that part working properly, but I'm having trouble referencing the output of the DB solution from my installer. I'm using relative paths to reference the DB project output in my WiX installer (e.g. <?define DBProjectOutputDir = "..\..\MyDatabaseSolution\MyDatabaseProject\sql\"?>) which works fine locally, but fails when building via TFS build. This is because TFS Build apparently changes the output dir of each project to one common location. Instead of the path to my database project being ..\..\MyDatabaseSolution\MyDatabaseProject\sql\ like it is when building locally, it gets set to something like ..\..\..\Binaries\Release\. How can I get around this and have a consistent output location to reference from my installer project? I'm using TFS 2005 and VS 2008.

• Problem Linking Boost Filesystem Library in Microsoft Visual C++

  Hello. I am having trouble getting my project to link to the Boost (version 1.37.0) Filesystem lib file in Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition. The Filesystem library is not a header-only library. I have been following the Getting Started on Windows guide posted on the official boost web page. Here are the steps I have taken: I used bjam to build the complete set of lib files using: bjam --build-dir="C:\Program Files\boost\build-boost" --toolset=msvc --build-type=complete I copied the /libs directory (located in C:\Program Files\boost\build-boost\boost\bin.v2) to C:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_37_0\libs. In Visual C++, under Project Properties Additional Library Directories I added these paths: C:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_37_0\libs C:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_37_0\libs\filesystem\build\msvc-9.0express\debug\link-static\threading-multi I added the second one out of desperation. It is the exact directory where libboost_system-vc90-mt-gd-1_37.lib resides. In Configuration Properties C/C++ General Additional Include Directories I added the following path: C:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_37_0 Then, to put the icing on the cake, under Tools Options VC++ Directories Library files, I added the same directories mentioned in step 3. Despite all this, when I build my project I get the following error: fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_system-vc90-mt-gd-1_37.lib' Additionally, here is the code that I am attempting to compile as well as a screen shot of the aformentioned directory where the (assumedly correct) lib file resides: #include "boost/filesystem.hpp" // includes all needed Boost.Filesystem declarations #include <iostream> // for std::cout using boost::filesystem; // for ease of tutorial presentation; // a namespace alias is preferred practice in real code using namespace std; int main() { cout << "Hello, world!" << endl; return 0; } Can anyone help me out? In order to duplicate what I'm experiencing do the following in: Create a new ASP.NET MVC 2 Web Application Right click the project and select Properties On the Web tab, select "Use Local IIS Web Server" Click on Create Virtual Directory Save all Unload the project Edit the project file Change MvcBuildViews to true Save all Reload project Right click the project and select Publish Choose the file system publish method Enter a target location Choose Delete all existing files Select Publish Right click the project Select Publish Each time I do the above I get the following errror: "It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level..." The error originates from obj\debug\package\packagetmp\web.config, relative to the project directory. I can repeat this all day long with any MVC 2 project I've built. In order to fix this problem, I need to set MvcBuildViews to false in the project file. That's not really an option. This wasn't a problem in Visual Studio 2008 and it seems to be an issue with the way the Publish command stages files beneath the project directory. Can anyone else duplicate this error? Is this a bug or by design? Is there a fix, workaround, etc...? Thanks.

• Viewing namespaced global variables in Visual Studio debugger?

  When debugging a non-managed C++ project in Visual Studio 2008, I occasionally want to see the value of a global variable. We don't have a lot of these but those that are there all declared within a namespace called 'global'. e.g. namespace global { int foo; bool bar; ... } The problem is that when the code is stopped at a breakpoint, the default debugging tooltip (from pointing at the variable name) and quickwatch (shift-f9 on the variable name) don't take the namespace into consideration and hence won't work. So for example I can point at 'foo' and nothing comes up. If I shift-f9 on foo, it will bring up the quickwatch, which then says 'CXX0017: Error: symbol "foo" not found'. I can get around that by manually editing the variable name in the quickwatch window to prefix it with "global::" (which is cumbersome considering you have to do it each time you want to quickwatch), but there is no fix for the tooltip that I can work out. Setting the 'default namespace' of the project properties doesn't help. How can I tell the VS debugger to use the namespace that it already knows the variable is declared in (since it has the declaration right there), or, alternatively, tell it a default namespace to look for variables in if it doesn't find them? My google-fu has failed to find an answer. This report lists the same problem, with MS saying it's "by design", but even so I am hoping there is some way to work around it (perhaps with clever use of autoexp.dat?)
