• Efficiently remove points with same slope

  Hi, In one of mine applications I am dealing with graphics objects. I am using open source GPC library to clip/merge two shapes. To improve accuracy I am sampling (adding multiple points between two edges) existing shapes. But before displaying back the merged shape I need to remove all the points between two edges. But I am not able to find an efficient algorithm that will remove all points between two edges which has same slope with minimum CPU utilization. Currently all points are of type PointF Any pointer on this will be a great help.

The reason I am doing this is for a VBulletin forum signature since it marquees left to right. I have tried editing the animation in Photoshop and I flipped the canvas to horizontal... I can't figure this out.. I've been at it for HOURS. hah Also if anyone can make it just a little darker that would be amazing. • Exclude records matching subquery

  There is probably an obvious answer to this question, but I am having one heck of a time getting anywhere with it. Consider the query: SELECT * FROM reports AS r JOIN reportvalues AS rv ON rv.report_id = r.report_id JOIN metrics AS m ON m.metric_id = rv.metric_id WHERE r.report_id NOT IN( SELECT DISTINCT report_id FROM exclude_report ) In this query, exclude_report is a view constructed in a similar manner. Now what happens is the query takes an EXTREMELY long time to execute, presumably because the subquery is being executed over each and every row in the parent query. However, I am finding no feasible means of doing this any other way. Oh great SQL wizards, please advise. I really need a way of doing this all in SQL, which I will be using in SSRS.

  Let me try to explain by example. Say website is hosted at example.com (NOT www.example.com). In order to serve static content cookie-free, I've chosen to use a different domain example-static.com. Now, lets consider that my static content is currently served like this: http://example.com/js/script.js http://example.com/css/style.css http://example.com/media/image.jpg ** Now I create a CNAME record aliasing example-static.com to my main domain i.e. example.com so that the static content is served as such: http://example-static.com/js/script.js http://example-static.com/css/style.css http://example-static.com/media/image.jpg ** Is that all I have to do? Will all browsers execute JavaScript files and load web fonts without any security concerns? OR should I be using some .htaccess rules to modify header information and the like? PS: It would be great if you can provide what rules should be added, if need be.

• TFS Automated Builds to Code Packages

  I would like to hear the best practices or know how people perform the following task in TFS 2008. I am intending on using TFS for building and storing web applications projects. Sometimes these projects can contain 100's of files (*.cs, *.acsx etc) During the lifetime of the website, a small bug will get raised resulting in say a stylesheet change, and a change to default.aspx.cs for example. On checking in these changes to TFS, and automated build would be triggered (great!), however for deploying the changes to the target production machine, I only need to deploy for example: style.css default.asx MyWebApplications.dll So my question is, can MSBuild be customized to generate a "code pack" of only the files which require deploying to the production server based on the changeset which cause the re-build?

• Livevalidation: only validate when default value is changed

  Hello there! I am validating my html form with livevalidation and everything works great except for one feature. I have a input field with a default value age, I only want the livevalidation to validate when it says something other than "age". so maybe the user will type in 20 then the validation will fire checking its things but if left as "age" it won't check it all. But as of now, it just checks everything with a validation script and this is a problem for me as I have lots of fields in my form and some of them are optional so when I hit submit, the livevalidation checks the age field as well even if the user didnt touch it to begin with. Would this be possible with livevalidation ? Thanks for the help.

• Rails - Posting a Boolean (true or False) and updating the DB in the controller

  Hello, in my Rails 3 App, I'm posting with jQuery the following: http://0.0.0.0:3000/topics/read_updater?&topic_id=101&read=true In my controller: def read_updater current_user.topics.where(:topic_id => params[:topic_id]).update_all(:read => params[:read]) render :json => {:status => 'success' } end params[:conversation_id] works great, but params[:read] is inserting empty values in the DB, even though jQuery is posting either a true or false. Ideas? I want rails to update the DB with either true or false. Thanks

• Bug in Programming Interviews Exposed?

  Hi, I could not find an errata for the 2nd edition of this book. My question concerns the if-statement in the following piece of code. void removeHead (Node ** head) { Node * temp; if (!(*head)) { temp = (*head)->next; delete *head; *head = temp; } } So I understand that the point of the if-statement is to check if the Node is null. However by adding an additional "!" to the evaluation, wouldn't this negate the false value of null? Would it be correct to change it to something like: if (*head) { ... } Also if anyone knows where I can find an official errata for the 2nd edition that would be great. Thanks, Sam

  Don't worry, I'm not going to ask that question, yet again... I am wanting to create my own programming language, just for learning sake. I don't want anything other than possibly a few links to head me into the right direction. MSDN Documentation on C# that is specific to what is required to create a language would be great! For the time being, all I am wanting to create is a very simple language that allows me to Create a Form, add a control to it, give that control a location, and maybe even some properties like a Text property, or maybe even a Color property.   At the moment, I've got a JSON file with content looking like this: { "username": "test", "someNumber":100 } I'm using JSON.Net to fetch the .JSON file from a webserver - C#: var http = new HttpClient(); http.MaxResponseContentBufferSize = Int32.MaxValue; var response = await http.GetStringAsync(URI); var result = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<DatClass.Result>(response); This works great together with the class getting/setting the properties. However, what I would like to know is whether there's a good way for a user to update the .JSON file through a textbox UI? As in: [textbox - update username] [update button] - username sent to server - .JSON file updated - [textblock - showing updated username in UI]. I'm not looking for exact code solutions, I'm rather looking for good solutions on this, and/or if this is a terrible idea of an easy database(?).

• Nesting queries in SQL

  The goal of my query is to return the country name and its head of state if it's headofstate has a name starting with A, and the capital of the country has greater than 100,000 people utilizing a nested query. Here is my query: SELECT country.name as country, (SELECT country.headofstate from country where country.headofstate like 'A%') from country, city where city.population > 100000; I've tried reversing it, placing it in the where clause etc. I don't get nested queries. I'm just getting errors back, like subquery returns more than one row and such. If someone could help me out with how to order it, and explain why it needs to be a certain way, that'd be great.

• SSIS - SharePoint to SQL without Adapter Addin?

  Hey all, Im looking to Extract a SharePoint List (WSS 2.0) to a SQL(2005) Table using SQL Server Integrated Services. First off I am aware of the "adapter" that does this from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd365137.aspx however I'm just wondering for compatibility purposes if it can't just be done "out of the box". There are only a limited number of "Data Flow Sources" to select as alternatives and I am unsure if any of these would be able to work in a similar way either directly to SharePoint or via SharePoints web services (e.g. http://server_name/_vti_bin/Lists.asmx) From the list of these sources it looks like the best option would be the OLE DB connector, but not sure how it would do this. Any help you have would be great, Mark

• SQL to get range of results in alphabetical order

  I have a table, tblTags which works in much the same way as StackOverflows tagging system. When I view a tags page, let's say the tag Tutorial I want to display the 10 tags before and after it in alphabetical order. So if we are given the tag Tutorial of ID 30 how can we return a record set in the order resembling: Tap Tart > Tutorial Umbrellas Unicorns Xylaphones I have thought of ways of doing this, badly, in my opinion as they involve retrieving ugly amounts of data. I'm not sure if it's possible to do something along the lines of (pseudo): SELECT RANGE(0 - 30) FROM tblTags ORDER BY Name ASC But how do you know the position of the tutorial tag in the list in an efficient manner without traversing the entire list until you find it? I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with LINQ if it makes any difference, SQL queries or LINQ would be great answers, thanks!

My first thought was, "Great another proponent of lego-land pretend programming" - a concept harking back to the late 80's. But, as I read more, I must admit I have become intrigued. Have you used FBP for a real project? What is your opinion of FBP? Does FBP have a future? In some senses, it seems like the holy grail of reuse that our industry has pursued since the advent of procedural languages.

Would you (and why) hire a foreigner, which experience is documented in CV and portfolio, which can communicate in english (with grammar mistakes, but still)? • How do Go web apps function from a server perspective?

  Hey Everyone, I followed the directions on how to create web applications using Go, and I was able to get an application working great. One thing I am confused about though is, when you run the application (./8.out), the terminal will sit there and listen on port 8080 until somebody accesses a page. Does the terminal need to stay up all of the time to run the web application? Does the application act like apache? Does apache need to be run next to this app? Setting this up on a server environment seems very confusing to me right now because I dont understand what the best way to do this is. Thanks for any help on this, Metropolis

• How do I make an About window the front-most window in a Cocoa application with no UI?

  I'm building a Cocoa application that runs as an item in the status bar. This application has an About window and an item to activate that about window, using the standard Cocoa mechanism for doing so (-[NSApplication orderFrontStandardAboutPanel:]). Naturally this is all hooked up automagically. It works great except for one thing: unlike most About windows, it shows up underneath all other windows, rather than on top. I believe this is because the application does not have a UI, so all its windows are automatically beneath other windows. Is there a way I can hook into the NSApplication mechanism for displaying the About window so I can send it to the front? I've poked around in the docs for NSApplication, but there's no way to get a reference to the About window that I can see so that I can make it appear on top.

Instead of retrieving the entire table, I am retrieving only one record using the following statement :- select * from Products where ProductID=3 Now I wanted to update dataset directly in to DB by using following statements (DAP 4.1) db.UpdateDataSet(ds, ds.Tables[0].TableName, null, cmdupdate, null, UpdateBehavior.Standard); Questions Can I Retrieve only one row from DB while a lot of other records are there and update back using Adapter update? ( In other words, I am not selecting all records from table) I am using Data Application Block 4.1? It will work there right? If anyone can give example for update will be great ( with Procedures). • PHP readdir() not returning files in alphabetical order

  I am reading through a directory with some pictures and such using a pretty simple implementation of readdir() like the following: if ($handle = opendir($path)) { while (false !== ($szFilename = readdir($handle))) { if ($szFilename[0] !== '.') { if (is_file($path.$szFilename)) { // do stuff } } } } The problem that I am having is that the files are not being read in alphabetical order as the docs for readdir() state: Returns the filename of the next file from the directory. The filenames are returned in the order in which they are stored by the filesystem. Another weird thing is that, on the local testing server, the same code works great. This is running on a server using the LAMP stack in both cases. I know that I can build an array and just sort it, but I was wondering if I was missing something in what I was doing. • Microsoft learning support for VS2010

  OK, I am a big fan of WPF, and while it is large area to fully understand, Microsoft has been great in posting loads of training video at http://windowsclient.net/learn/videos_wpf.aspx However with the release of 2010 it all seams to have gone very quiet. I expected a lot of the support to be updated for 2010 and I also expected a lot of new videos on the best way to use the new features in 2010. Currently I find myself working through videos based on 2008 (or even 2005) and trying to apply them to 2010. Don't get me wrong it not that I mind doing this, it just that I fear I may be learning methods which have better or different solutions in 2010. It is just me expecting too much of Microsoft, or have I missed out on a new website?

• Pass information back from an iframe?

  Right now i'm building a firefox plugin that duplicates some functionality on my website. It takes in an email address and then returns information to the user. The easiest way to do this in the plugin is to use an Iframe and render that super simple form on my website. All of this works great, but to make the plugin really useful, i would like the plugin to have access to the information that the iframe renders, so it can use it in the current window that the user is in. Is it possible to pass information back through an Iframe in this manner? I know there are quite a few domain access restrictions with Iframes, so any help or insight is appreciated!!

• Rails: How do I run a before_save only if certain conditions are met?

  I have a before_save method that I call that renames an uploaded image. before_save :randomize_file_name def randomize_file_name extension = File.extname(screen_file_name).downcase key = ActiveSupport::SecureRandom.hex(8) self.screen.instance_write(:file_name, "#{key}#{extension}") end That method is part of my Item model. That works great when I create a new item or need to update the image associated with an item...but the problem is that if I need to update an item but NOT the image, the randomize_file_name method still gets run and renames the file in the database (though not the file itself, obviously). So, I'm thinking I need to figure out a way to only run randomize_file_name if a file is included in the form submission...but I'm not sure how to pull that off.

  Trouble! I'm looking for a way to find the countries within a given range of LAT/LONG coordinates. E.g.: When viewing a place in Africa in Google Maps, I get out which countries that are in my current view. This is a bit ambitious, and I think the main problem will be dealing with accuracy of the needed polygons. The accuracy of these don't need to be all that great, the borders can probably be tens of miles off, or even more. This will be needed for the entire world.
