  • Where c++ really shines?

    I know C and python, and I'm moving toward another language for learning purposes. My problem is that I like to learn things with something to do (for example contributing to some project or do something amazing, not boring plain algebra). I would like to hear suggestions about the fields in which C++ shines and where I can found interesting programming with C++. (for fields I mean networking/gui programming/algorithms/games ...)

    I'm diving into iPhone development and one of the core concepts im trying to get my head around is view controllers. If you look at the GLPaint example on the apple dev site, you'll see a project that has... An app delegate class A uiwindow subclass And a uiview subclass And the uiview subclass implements all the core graphics painting logic and handles the touch events. My questions are, why is there no view controller implemented to handle that view logic? Could you use a view controller to implement that logic or does it have to be implemented in the uiview subclass? And last, when should you use a view controller to implement the view logic code?     I'm trying to use the method for naming a lua package after the filename mentioned here, however _REQUIREDNAME is never defined. For example I have these two files samplePackage.lua: print("_REQUIREDNAME: ", _REQUIREDNAME) return nil; packageTest.lua: require "samplePackage" And when I run packageTest.lua it outputs > _REQUIREDNAME: nil I also couldn't find any mention of _REQUIREDNAME in the Lua 5.1 Refrence manual, so was this removed from the language, or am I missing something?

    I'm reading the gcc manual at the moment, especially the part about warning/error flags. After reading the part about the -Wextra flag, I wonder if it is useful at all. It seems that it complains about things which seem to be rather subjective or a matter of taste. I'm not that experienced with gcc, I only use it from time to time for some small projects at university, so to all experienced C/C++ (or for whatever language you use gcc), what's the deal with -Wextra?

  • Should my DAOs (Database Entities) Directly match my UI Objects?

    I am trying to figure out best practice for N-Tier application design. When designing the objects my UI needs and those that will be persisted in the DB some of my colleagues are suggesting that the objects be one in the same. This doesn't not feel right to me and I am ultimately looking for some best practice documentation to help me in this decision. I honestly do not understand why I would want to design this way given that other applications may want to interact with my Data Access Layer....or it is just ignorance or lack of understanding on my part. Any documentation, information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Just want to better understand these concepts and I am having a hard time finding some good information on the best practice for implementing these patterns (Or it is right in front of me on what I found and I didn't understand what was being outlined).     For the longest time I've been curious to code in Intermediate Language just as an academic endeavour and to gain a better understanding of what's "happening under the hood". Does anybody provide Visual Studio support for *IL in the form of: project templates, IntelliSense integration, and those kind of RAD features? Edits: I don't mean restricted to out of the box support. For example, I can download Visual Studio extensions to support Python, COBOL, etc. Want the same for *IL. There is a stand-alone Intermediate Assembler tool.

    Hello everyone, I have a little problem picking the right language to write my daemon, I am confused between C and C++, I want to use C++ because it is more expanded than C, but I want to use C because it is the starting point of everything in linux, I want to go for C++ as I have many resources about it, so, does it make any difference if I pick C++ instead of C? and what I will have good if I learn C more? I feel like if I go into C++ I will cover C within C++... Regards

  • Access location variable in another process

    I have a locationmanager in my main program which is called HomeViewController which I get the latitude and longitude and store them in LAT and LON. I can use LAT and LON in HomeViewController just fine. Once I go to another controller which is sending pictures and setting properties on flicker I want to use LAT and LON, how do I do this? I tried putting HomeViewController.LAT but obviously that does not work, I'm pretty new to the language so I am confused.
