• How can I speed up boot on one of my machines?

  I have a Gateway all in one machine (2 gig Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 dual core processor, 2 gig RAM - full specs) on which I installed 10.10. Once it has booted it's fine, but it takes forever to boot. This is what happens: 1. Boot starts with cursor flashing for about 10-15 seconds 2. Cursor disappears for 1.5 - 2 minutes 3. Cursor reappears, blinks a few seconds more, boot finishes in another 10 seconds 4. Login screen I have another machine with marginal better specs that boots up in no time (basically the above minus the two minute delay). Things I've done: enabled verbose mode for grub nothing is showing until after 2 minute pause. checked syslog last message before pause is a message from alsa saying the process is already running (or something similar... going from memory here...) It could be something sound related as the built in speakers are not working (sound card is recognized though and headphones work). Anyway, it's not the end of the world, but it's annoying and I'd like to know what's going on... Many thanks, and let me know if more info is needed.

• Managing game objects/components

  Good day everyone, By far the biggest problem that has always dawned on my when programming games is how to structure my code. It just becomes an incredible mess after a while. The reason for that is because I have no idea how different classes should interact with each other. Let's have an example. Say I have a class Player, a class PlayerInput and a class Map. The player class contains information as to the location of the player, whereas the player input class handles changing that location, but by first making sure it's within a walkable area from the map class. How to structure this? My usual approach is to pass those components as parameters in the constructors of the parameters that need them, like so: var map = new Map(); var player = new Player(); var input = new PlayerInput(player, map); The problem with that is that it quickly gets messy, when you add new components you have to go through your constructors and update them, and it doesn't work well if you have mirroring references: var physics = new Physics(input); //Oops, doesn't work var input = new Input(physics); So, how do you guys usually manage this? • zune - how do i make the PC zune download a movie, not stream it?

  As the title suggests - I have bought a tv show series season on PC Zune. My gf watched the show, and now i'd like to be able to watch the show too. The catch - i'm going to go overseas on a trip soon, and i'd like to be able to watch the show from outside the US. Given that Zune won't let me stream things overseas (past experience, anyway), I would like to download the show to my computer and watch it that way. The problem is that although the full season has been "watched" it appears it was only streamed, not downloaded. Or rather, that one episode was downloaded, and the rest streamed. I bought a season pass (so all the episodes at once) and the show was bought, not rented. How do i make Zune download, not stream, a show?

• Wifi in android-x86 with virtual box [closed]

  I am trying to run android-x86 in Virtualbox, I am using a laptop which connects to internet via WiFi. When the android starts in virtual box, it does not recognize the host wireless connection or in other words does not identify the wireless network at all. So I got a TP-Link wireless USB adapter connected to the laptop and configured wireless controller in USB for the VM. But sadly I found that the wireless is disabled as soon as the Android VM starts. I am stuck on how to let android running in Virtualbox identify my Wifi. Any guidelines or set up instructions would be greatly helpful.

• How to build a "traffic AI"?

  A project I am working on right now features a lot of "traffic" in the sense of cars moving along roads, aircraft moving aroun an apron etc. As of now the available paths are precalculated, so nodes are generated automatically for crossings which themselves are interconnected by edges. When a character/agent spawns into the world it starts at some node and finds a path to a target node by means of a simply A* algorithm. The agent follows the path and ultimately reaches its destination. No problem so far. Now I need to enable the agents to avoid collisions and to handle complex traffic situations. Since I'm new to the field of AI I looked up several papers/articles on steering behavior but found them to be too low-level. My problem consists less of the actual collision avoidance (which is rather simple in this case because the agents follow strictly defined paths) but of situations like one agent leaving a dead-end while another one wants to enter exactly the same one. Or two agents meeting at a bottleneck which only allows one agent to pass at a time but both need to pass it (according to the optimal route found before) and they need to find a way to let the other one pass first. So basically the main aspect of the problem would be predicting traffic movement to avoid dead-locks. Difficult to describe, but I guess you get what I mean. Do you have any recommendations for me on where to start looking? Any papers, sample projects or similar things that could get me started? I appreciate your help!

• Update Windows using VB.net

  I'm currently having my internship at a elementary school. I got the task to setup users for some classes, with that I also need run Windows Update too. So I have been scanning Google for something that does this in vb.net since I have been coding some in that before. I din't find much on the subject except for "C:\Windows\System32\wuauclt.exe /detectnow" though when I run it it don't seem to do much. So the question is it there is any command or file you can run to make Windows download and install updates? To clarify it need to work on Windows 7, I'm also writing the program in .NET 3.5. • Thunderbird: "Could not initialize the application's security component" [closed]

  In Thunderbird, on startup, I get the error message: "Could not initialize the application's security component" The message continues to check permissions of the profile, and free disk space. df -h shows, that I have 19G free disk space. find . -not -perm -644 -not -perm -600 -ls shows: No file without rw-permissions for me. Before the error occured, thunderbird worked well. But I changed my main mail-account. I had two, let's call them A and B, and used mainly A, but now I wanted to deaktivate it, and receive and send automatically via the second. I Had problems moving the filters from inbox A to inbox B (missing copy-functionality). In the web, I found (mollazine) hints, to move key3.db, cert8.db and secmode.db out of the way, but it didn't work for me. Another hint was to uninstall Quickcam(?. sic!), but I don't have Quickcam. A third to recreate the profile, but I have subdirectories, filters, addressbook, groups - mails back to the year 2003. I don't want to risk the loss of data. The whole errormessage is: Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features. When I open the error-console, it is empty.

• Copying Tables from a Website

  I have difficulty making an Excel-readable file from a table on a Website. The problems very specific to my question are: I have to use IE 7 to access the site. Excel is installed in another computer. The site does not let me view the HTML of the table. Normally, I would simply select the table I want and drag and drop it to Excel. Or, I would view the page source and copy the HTML data. Both do not work in this case. Is there any handy tool out there?

I need to push some limited SQL 2005 information to a Web Server in the DMZ so that I do not have to let database queries come all the way into the database server on our internal network. I want to push a small amount of dynamic data to a Web server in the DMZ and lock it down so that our hosted website does not need to come into the internal network for information; I want to put a server in the DMZ that will be the only connection allowed to the SQL database. This DMZ server will be the only server that can have any sort of connection to the back-end database so the hosting provider just pull the data from our server in the DMZ...

• Can I move a copy of Windows 7 from one machine to another?

  This is a pretty basic question sorry but I've looked in the 'related questions' and couldn't find an answer. When Windows 7 came out I bought a copy of Home Premium, the retail box with both 32 and 64 bit versions, to install via Boot Camp on my macbook. I've just got a retail (32 and 64 bit) copy of Windows 7 Ultimate that I'd like to install instead-of/over the Home Premium version and it struck me that I should, at least in principal be able to install the Home Premium version on my son's machine - is this the case and if so is there anything I should do first or once they're installed to let MS know I'm being a good guy about this? Sorry it's such a dim question but I'm a serverfault guy really and know very little about Windows. Thanks.

• Should Starting a Quick Game via Google Game Services be Iterated?

  I have been following this tutorial for Google Play Game Services. I am a little unclear as to if the room matching algorithm should be looped or not. Can I just initialize this process once and let it time out? Or by iterating through it is it somehow rechecking it? If anyone had the approximate timeout that would be great as well. The problem stems from the fact that even when both phones are signing into the Game Services (at virtually the same time, my friend and I logged in), the room is not registering multiple people. One time my friend's phone even entered the game map, showing that he somehow was able to progress from the room initialization process. • Determining where a file is being cached

  I've got a debian webserver running apache, from which I regularly download an executable using IE 8 on an XP virtual machine (over LAN). However, I realised that somewhere along the line that I've been repeatedly running the same version (and wondering why my changes weren't being displayed). A Ctrl+F5 in IE will let me download the new version (although the page is always updated with a simple F5). This makes me suspect that the caching is happening in windows/IE, but I'm not certain. Wherever it's happening, is there an easy way to prevent it at the server? Eventually, we're hoping to offer the software to the entire company, and we'd like to avoid having to tell everyone to do a Ctrl+F5 every time there's an updated version.

• How to Completely delete my USB thumbstick?

  I own a Kingston thumb-stick. I have installed a Google Chrome OS image to it so I could try it out. When it did so, it created 3 partitions (I backed everything and the software that installed Chrome OS delete my thumb-stick completely and created 3 partitions). Now I want to get it back to 1 partition but when I go to Disk Management, it will not let me "extend" the partition. I have tried different partitioning tools but they didn't recognize my thumb-stick anyway. I have also tried DiskPart to no avail. Is there any software that will completely format my thumb-stick so I would only have 1 partition?

• How do I make a Live USB without destroying my Windows computer?

  Unlike every other post I have read, let me begin by saying that I am TERRIFIED of destroying my Windows 7 home system in the attempt of making a bootable Ubuntu Thumb Drive. I very specifically DO NOT want to attempt configuring a dual boot system. What I am seeking is a portable operating system on a thumb drive, through which I can run my COREL software via VirtualBox-4.1.16-78094-Win. I want to be able to use my own software on my work computer without any worries about screwing up the host system anywhere I go. Supposedly, I just made a bootable Thumb drive, having successfully loaded the ISO for ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386 using Pendrivelinux's Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.1 However, all that I get is a Thumb Drive that wants to install Unbutu onto my PC's HDD. I am not finding any clear path to this end in the posts I am reading. Like it or not, Windows is a fact of life for me. The goal is to be able to use my software on my work PC without doing anything intrusive that will cost me my job. If I have a meltdown on my PC at home trying to make this happen, it will be nearly as bad. Is this even Do-Able? Can the process be made clear? Thank You, Ubuntu World ...!

• Data recovery on a Samsung SV1203N HDD

  Let me start by saying that I am a beginner in Ubuntu, but pretty knowledgeable with Windows. I am having a strange problem trying to recover data from a Samsung SV1203N HDD (120 GiB). I have tried numerous things in both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (on a flash drive, an external HDD and a Live CD). This drive has some very important data on it and I am praying some of you Ubuntu geeks can help me get it back. Here's my problem. The HDD is clicking while I am booting, but it stops when I get into Ubuntu or Windows. It refuses to be detected in the bios, so I cant perform any tests on it. I have tried numerous things in both Windows (repair CD, Jumpers, etc.) and Ubuntu (Boot-Fix, GParted, Testdisk, Photorec, forcing a mount, etc.). But it all seems to lead me back to the fact that the drive is not being recognized in the BIOS. I've even tried chilling the drive in the fridge, which worked well for another drive I work on, and I recovered all of the data in Ubuntu flawlessly. I am assuming that since the drive stops clicking when I get into the OS' that there is hope for recovery. I am going to try an IDE/SATA to USB cable, and replacing the Logic Board, but I want to exhaust all other possibilities before I do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated Bye

Well understand: The interface technology is more well understand by every C++ developer. Performance: Interface way performance not worse than PIMPL idiom, both an extra memory access. • When computer turns on: keyboard/mouse/monitor don't work?

  the computer is barely good,at least i think..features Intel core 2 4 GB ram Nvidia Radeon 9600 512 mb Gigabite motherboad (the others i can't remember).. Used this computer for 3 years with no problem...The problem started one day after while it froze everything, then I shut down with removing the electricity power. A few hours later, I tried to log in to the computer but nothing moved. Nor keyboard nor mouse nor monitor worked, I was thinking that should be a delay so I left it some time. After a minute it turned off without my help around 30 seconds then it turned on automatically, but was the same problem like before and it goes again and again...any suggestions? If more info/specs required, let me know.

• Windows 7 system CPU bogged by windows services, no explanation

  I'm looking at a laptop for a colleague which is running terribly slow. A quick look showed that the CPU was 100% used by 2-3 SVCHost processes, which off course doesn't tell much since those are just 'cover' processes with services running underneath them. So I fired up process explorer in hopes of finding a shady rogue service which was bogging the system, but to my suprise I found genuine MS Windows processes (or at least damn-good disguised ones) are bogging down the system: dnscache (DNS Client) IKEEXT (IKE and AuthIP IPSec Keyring modules) iphlpsvc (IP Helper) Seen separately, these processes might seem odd to be using a lot of CPU, but taking a step back one can conclude that all three services are quite closely related to networking. I've tried running: netsh int ip reset log.txt which has helped me save bizarre network-related problems in the past, but this didn't help Off course I though about a virus, but both MS Security Essentials as well as malwarebytes (let both run a full scan).

  I am still working apace on updates to my open source project SSISReportingPack, specifically I am working on improvements to usp_ssiscatalog which is a stored procedure that eases the querying and exploration of the data in the SSIS Catalog. In this blog post I want to share a titbit of information about usp_ssiscatalog, that all the actions that you can take when you execute usp_ssiscatalog are documented within the stored procedure itself. For example if you simply execute EXEC usp_ssiscatalog @action='exec' in SSMS then switch over to the messages tab you will see some information about the action: OK, that’s kinda cool. But what if you only want to see the documentation and don’t actually want any action to take place.   So I upgraded on a fresh install to Ubuntu 12.10, not beta, and I've tried installing wine many many times now many different ways but the jist of it is this: This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time. The following packages have unmet dependencies: wine: Any ideas? • How to dual boot Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows XP sp3 on Dell Dimension 8250 desktop using 2 hard drives

  I'd like instructions to dual boot Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows XP (sp3) on my desktop Dell Dimension 8250 (this is old and has 1.5 GB RAM which is maximum). I will be using 2 hard drives. Windows XP is already on a 120 GB drive and and Ubuntu 12.10 will go on a separate 80 GB hard drive. Both drives are IDE using a 80 conductor cable where the 40 pin blue connector connects to the motherboard. The middle connector is gray and is "normally" used for slave (device 1) and the black connector at the very end of the cable is meant for the master drive (device 0) or a single drive if only one is used. First, I do not wish the XP drive to have its boot modified by Ubuntu in any way. It should remain untouched...virgin. Let me know where the XP drive and the Ubuntu drive should be connected based upon the cable I've mentioned above, as well as jumper settings for both during the whole process. I'm just guessing, but should I remove the XP drive and put the empty Ubuntu drive in its place and install Ubuntu? By the way, I already have made the DVD ISO disk. For your information, the BIOS for this machine is version A03. When I tap F12 to get to the boot menu, I have the following choices: Normal (this will take me to a black screen with white type giving me the choice to boot to XP or to my external USB backup recovery drive) Diskette Drive Hard-Disk Drive c: IDE CD-ROM Drive (Note that if the CD Drive is empty, it will then go to the DVD drive) System Setup IDE Drive Diagnostics Boot to Utility Partition (This is Dell's various testing utilities) Thank you in advance for your help. • Can I dynamicaly size a div based on discreet units and still center? [closed]

  Here's the problem: I have a website I'm working on that, depending on what the user has selected, will pop up a different number of boxes 80px high and 200px wide and currently set to float:left. These boxes are contained within a div that is basically the whole width of the screen minus some 1% margins. So at the moment they all fill in the box and, depending on screen size, occupy a grid of variable height and width. The problem is, if the screen size makes the containing box, say, 700px wide then you end up with 3 boxes per row and a bloody big margin on the right. What I would like to do is center the grid of boxes inside the containing box so that the margins are equal left and right. I suspect this can't be done since it means the containing box needs to set its size by looking both at the size of the user's window as well as the size of its children. It would be easy to do with javascript but I'd prefer not to if that is an option. If it is truly impossible then I will simply script it and let non-js users see a left-justified set of boxes.

  I'm struggling with some iptables rules. I'm a newbie in iptables. I found some resources where I get the following command related to iptables. This is stored in a file that will be executed. [0:0] -A PREROUTING -s 10.1.0.0/24 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 81 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.1.0.6:3128 Can anybody explain me what does [0:0] mean? • Controlling TV Channel Through Computer

  I'm passing my TV input through my computer so that I can use the video stream in an application I'm creating which then outputs to my TV. E.g. Sky Digibox/FreeView box - Laptop - TV Where on my laptop I'll be using the stream in a WPF application so I can overlay XAML objects onto it. My question is, what would be the best way for me to send the signal back to the box to say change the channel for example? I don't want to have to use the remote, I want the computer to handle everything. Is there a standard cable these boxes have that could take what would normally be a remote control signal and use that as input instead? Or would I have to go down the route of looking at some sort of Infared LED to send the signal recreating the remote? Apologies if this is not clear enough, let me know and I'll try and be more precise.
