• What makes a game a game vs something else like a puzzle or a toy?

  Famously the Sims and similar games have been described by some designers as Toys and not "really" games. I'm curious if there is a good answer to what makes something a game. For example many companies sell Sudoku games - EA has an iPhone one, IronSudoku offers a great web based one, and there are countless others on most platforms. Many newspapers publish Sudoku puzzles in their print editions and often online. What differentiates a game from a puzzle? (or are all Sudoku "games" misnamed?) I'm not convinced there is a simple or easy answer - but I'd love to be proven wrong. I've seen some definitions and emphasize "rules" as core to something being a game (vs. "real life") but puzzles have rules as well - as do many other things. I'm open to answers that either focus only on computer games (on any platform) or which expand to include games and gameplay across many platforms. Here to I'm not fully convinced the lines are clear - is a "game" of D&D played over a virtual tabletop with computer dice rollers, video & audio chat a computer game or something else? (I'd lean towards something else - but where do you draw that line?)

• F# performance vs Erlang performance, is there proof the Erlang's VM is faster?

  I've been putting time into learning functional programming and I've come to the part where I want to start writing a project instead of just dabbling in tutorials/examples. While doing my research, I've found that Erlang seems to be a pretty powerful when it comes to writing concurrent software (which is my goal), but resources and tools for development aren't as mature as Microsoft development products. F# can run on linux (Mono) so that requirement is met, but while looking around on the internet I cannot find any comparisons of F# vs Erlang. Right now, I am leaning towards Erlang just because it seems to have the most press, but I am curious if there is really any performance difference between the two languages. Since I am use to developing in .NET, I can probably get up to speed with F# a lot faster than Erlang, but I cannot find any resource to convince me that F# is just as scalable as Erlang. I am most interested in simulation, which is going to be firing a lot of quickly processed messages to persistant nodes. If I have not done a good job with what I am trying to ask, please ask for more verification.

• How do I manage the technical debate over WCF vs. Web API?

  I'm managing a team of like 15 developers now, and we are stuck at a point on choosing the technology, where the team is broken into two completely opposite teams, debating over usage of WCF vs. Web API. Team A which supports usage of Web API, brings forward these reasons: Web API is just the modern way of writing services (Wikipedia) WCF is an overhead for HTTP. It's a solution for TCP, and Net Pipes, and other protocols WCF models are not POCO, because of [DataContract] & [DataMember] and those attributes SOAP is not as readable and handy as JSON SOAP is an overhead for network compared to JSON (transport over HTTP) No method overloading Team B which supports the usage of WCF, says: WCF supports multiple protocols (via configuration) WCF supports distributed transactions Many good examples and success stories exist for WCF (while Web API is still young) Duplex is excellent for two-way communication This debate is continuing, and I don't know what to do now. Personally, I think that we should use a tool only for its right place of usage. In other words, we'd better use Web API, if we want to expose a service over HTTP, but use WCF when it comes to TCP and Duplex. By searching the Internet, we can't get to a solid result. Many posts exist for supporting WCF, but on the contrary we also find people complaint about it. I know that the nature of this question might sound arguable, but we need some good hints to decide. We're stuck at a point where choosing a technology by chance might make us regret it later. We want to choose with open eyes. Our usage would be mostly for web, and we would expose our services over HTTP. In some cases (say 5 to 10 percent) we might need distributed transactions though. What should I do now? How do I manage this debate in a constructive way?

  The final round of IBM’s Watson against Ken Jenning and Brad Rutter ended last night with Watson coming out in a strong lead against its two human opponents. Read on to catch a video of the match and see just how quick Watson is on the draw. Watson tore through many of the answers, the little probability bar at the bottom of the screen denoting it was often 95%+ confident in its answers. Some of the more interesting stumbles were, like in the last matches, based on nuance. • Computer Science Programming Certificate vs. Computer Science Degree?

  I'm kind of in a tough spot. My current living conditions require that I work a full-time job while attending school. I've attended a UC in the past but had to withdraw my junior year due to financial issues at home. I currently work an entry-level IT corp job but I'm looking to further my salary/skills by getting a degree, or a programming certificate like this one: http://www.lavc.edu/voced1/CSITCertCSP/CSITCertFrameCSP.htm Herein lies the problem. I prefer getting a CS degree from an accredited university but I looked at the schedules for classes and it is impossible to work around my current 40/hr work week. There are random morning classes, with the occasional evening class, but the times get even more construed as I move my way up to the upper divisions. So what I guess I'm trying to get at is, can anyone lay out the pros and cons of obtaining a certificate vs. the degree (besides obvious points like the latter being 100x better)? I'm aware that having a degree is always going to be a better route, but...is the programming certificate useless? Should I not even bother?

• Permission based Authorization vs. Role based Authorization - Best Practices - 11g

  In previous blog posts here and here I have alluded to the support in OWSM for Permission based authorization and Role based authorization support. Recently I was having a conversation with an internal team in Oracle looking to use OWSM for their Web Services security needs and one of the topics was around - When to use permission based authorization vs. role based authorization? As in most scenarios the answer is it depends! There are trade-offs involved in using the two approaches and you need to understand the trade-offs and you need to understand which trade-offs are better for your scenario. Role based Authorization: Simple to use. Just create a new custom OWSM policy and specify the role in the policy (using EM Fusion Middleware Control). Inconsistent if you have multiple type of resources in an application (ex: EJBs, Web Apps, Web Services) - ex: the model for securing EJBs with roles or the model for securing Web App roles - is inconsistent. Since the model is inconsistent, tooling is also fairly inconsistent. Achieving this use-case using JDeveloper is slightly complex - since JDeveloper does not directly support creating OWSM custom policies. Permission based Authorization: More complex. You need to attach both an OWSM policy and create OPSS Permission authorization policies. (Note: OWSM leverages OPSS Permission based Authorization support). More appropriate if you have multiple type of resources in an application (ex: EJBs, Web Apps, Web Services) and want a consistent authorization model. Consistent Tooling for managing authorization across different resources (ex: EM Fusion Middleware Control). Better Lifecycle support in terms of T2P, etc. Achieving this use-case using JDeveloper is slightly complex - since JDeveloper does not directly support creating/editing OPSS Permission based authorization policies.

• Rule of thumb for cost vs. savings for code re-use

  Is it a good rule of thumb to always write code for the intent of re-using it somewhere down the road? Or, depending on the size of the component you are writing, is it better practice to design it for re-use when it makes sense with regards to time spent on it. What is a good rule of thumb for spending extra time on analysis and design on project components that have "some probability" of being needed later down the road for other things that may or may need this part. For example, if I have the need for project X to do things A, and B. A definitely needs to be written for re-use because it just makes sense to do so. B is very project specific at the moment, and I can hack it all together in a couple days to finish the project on time and give everyone kudos for being a great team, etc. Or if we say, lets spend a whole friggin' 2 weeks figuring out what project Y/Z might need this thing for and spend a load of extra time on on part B because someday we might need to use it on project Y/Z (where the savings will be realized). I'd imagine a perfect world situation would be a nicely crafted combination of project specific vs. re-use architected components given the project. However some code shops might feel it would be a great idea to write everything for the intention of using it at some point down the road.

• What determines which Javascript functions are blocking vs non-blocking?

  I have been doing web-based Javascript (vanilla JS, jQuery, Backbone, etc.) for a few years now, and recently I've been doing some work with Node.js. It took me a while to get the hang of "non-blocking" programming, but I've now gotten used to using callbacks for IO operations and whatnot. I understand that Javascript is single-threaded by nature. I understand the concept of the Node "event queue". What I DON'T understand is what determines whether an individual javascript operation is "blocking" vs. "non-blocking". How do I know which operations I can depend on to produce an output synchronously for me to use in later code, and which ones I'll need to pass callbacks to so I can process the output after the initial operation has completed? Is there a list of Javascript functions somewhere that are asynchronous/non-blocking, and a list of ones that are synchronous/blocking? What is preventing my Javascript app from being one giant race condition? I know that operations that take a long time, like IO operations in Node and AJAX operations on the web, require them to be asynchronous and therefore use callbacks - but who is determining what qualifies as "a long time"? Is there some sort of trigger within these operations that removes them from the normal "event queue"? If not, what makes them different from simple operations like assigning values to variables or looping through arrays, which it seems we can depend on to finish in a synchronous manner? Perhaps I'm not even thinking of this correctly - hoping someone can set me straight. Thanks!

• Vector-based fonts vs. bitmap fonts in (2d) games?

  I know that many games are using bitmap fonts. Which are the advantages for vector-based font rendering / manipulation when compared to bitmap fonts and in which scenarios would they matter the most? Prefer a focus on 2d games when answering this question. If relevant, please include examples for games using either approach. Some factors you might consider: amount of text used in the game scaling of text overlaying glyphs and anti-aliasing general rendering quality font colors and styling user interface requirements localisation / unicode text wrapping and formatting cross-platform deployment 2d vs 3d Background: I am developing a simple falling blocks game in 2d, targeted for pc. I would like to add text labels for level, score, and menu buttons. I am using SFML which uses FreeType internally, so vector-based features are easily available for my project. In my view, font sizes in simple games often don't vary, and bitmap fonts should be easier for cross-platform concerns (font-formats and font rendering quality). But I am unsure if I am missing some important points here, especially since I want to polish the looks of the final game.

• Advantages of Scala vs. Groovy with JAVA EE 6 Applications.

  Please let me first emphasize that I am not looking for flare wars. I just want advices from people who have real experiences. I started learning JAVA EE 6 as real newbie and am having had time choosing what tools to use. First problem is what is the advantage of using Scala vs. Groovy with Java EE 6 apps over Java? I've seen on some blogs people mentioning you gonna write less code but as a newbie I don't know what other advantages and disadvantages are there. Second problem is Netbeans 6.9 or Helios 3.6.1? I realized that with eclipse I can easily mix EE 6 applications with Groovy or Scala without any problems (I only did this by displaying a String message from Scala and Groovy classes.). With Netbeans the only I can think of is having separate Java project libraries and using the jars in my web app. But also realize to the extent of my little knowledge Netbeans has better support for Java EE 6. Please need your expert advice. Thanks.

• Amazon EC2 vs Dedicated server at Hetzner, what's the use for EC2?

  After searching the web I still can't find the reason to use EC2. What's the point to scale EC2? If you expect a huge burst in traffic, they say. OK, but what if you already have a couple of sites with good traffic, and for example medium reserved EC2 instance is not enough. You are paying $36.60(medium reserved for 1year) in EU(Ireland) + traffic + optional expenses for databases and S3 if you use them. Of course as some point when you are under $56.6-$66.1 you can optimize your hosting costs with Amazon EC2. But when you get at some point if purchase EX4 server from Hetzner, it will surpass your perfomance needs for a long time, before you get a massive traffic. (I am wrong?) CPU: i7-2600 Quadcore (3.4-3.8 Ghz) RAM: 16 GB HDD: 2x3 TB SATA (6 Gbit/s) - I think that disc performance of a dedicated is better then of Amazon EBS Traffic: 10 TiB in month included. This is what you get from Hetzner for $56(- 19% VAT) or $66 for EU residents. Please, tell me what's the reason to use Amazon? Which load won't a server from Hetzner take, but Amazon Auto Scaling will? The maintenance of dedicated vs EC2 is still the same? Or hardware failure at Amazon, won't ruin your EBS storage? I'm still not at the level when I need expensive hosting, but want to know beforehand, just to be sure if Amazon infrastructure is better then pure performance of Hetzner's hardware.

Q1 2010 simplifies this process a lot, by giving a couple of ways (one new and one updated) to upgrade existing applications to the latest and greatest version of RadControls for WinForms: By using the new Visual Studio Extensions (VSX), available in VS2005, VS2008 and VS2010 RC; By using the updated Project Upgrade Utility. Here are the steps: Upgrading a classic Windows Forms application to the latest RadControls for WinForms by using the Visual Studio Extensions Install RadControls for WinForms Q1 2010 Open the classic Windows Forms application (VB or C#) Open the Telerik Menu and select RadControls for WinForms --> Convert to Telerik WinForms Application     Select the Telerik controls you plan to use in the application, as well as a theme, and click OK. The VSX package will add the needed assemblies to your project automatically for you.     Replace the standard controls on your form with the respective Telerik controls.     Run the application to see the result. Upgrading an older RadControls application to the latest RadControls for WinForms by using the Visual Studio Extensions Install RadControls for WinForms Q1 2010. Open your current RadControls application (VB or C#), which uses pre-Q1 2010 assembly versions. Open the Telerik Menu and select RadControls for WinForms --> Upgrade Wizard   Choose to either use the online downloader of the latest version, or to use the currently installed version. The VSX package will check what assemblies you use in your project and will upgrade them automatically.     Run the application to see the result. • Add elements to Arraylist and it replaces all previous elements in Java

  I am adding elements to a ArrayList and it adds the first one correctly but then when I add any subsequent elements it wipes replaces the other elements with the value form the most recently added and adds a new element to the ArrayList. I ran test using arraylist and ints and even another created class and it worked perfectly but soemthing about the custon class i am using here causes problems.   I've been working on this and I don't think I'm doing it right. |D Our database doesn't keep track of how many customers we retain so we looked for an alternate method. It's outlined in this article. It suggests you have this table to fill in: Year Number of Customers Number of customers Retained in 2009 Percent (%) Retained in 2009 Number of customers Retained in 2010 Percent (%) Retained in 2010 .... 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 Total The table would go out to 2012 in the headers. I'm just saving space. It tells you to find the total number of customers you had in your starting year. To do this, I used this query since our starting year is 2008: select YEAR(OrderDate) as 'Year', COUNT(distinct(billemail)) as Customers from dbo.tblOrder where OrderDate >= '2008-01-01' and OrderDate <= '2008-12-31' group by YEAR(OrderDate) At the moment we just differentiate our customers by email address. Then you have to search for the same names of customers who purchased again in later years (ours are 2009, 10, 11, and 12). I came up with this. It should find people who purchased in both 2008 and 2009. SELECT YEAR(OrderDate) as 'Year',COUNT(distinct(billemail)) as Customers FROM dbo.tblOrder o with (nolock) WHERE o.BillEmail IN (SELECT DISTINCT o1.BillEmail FROM dbo.tblOrder o1 with (nolock) WHERE o1.OrderDate BETWEEN '2008-1-1' AND '2009-1-1') AND o.BillEmail IN (SELECT DISTINCT o2.BillEmail FROM dbo.tblOrder o2 with (nolock) WHERE o2.OrderDate BETWEEN '2009-1-1' AND '2010-1-1') --AND o.OrderDate BETWEEN '2008-1-1' AND '2013-1-1' AND o.BillEmail NOT LIKE '%@halloweencostumes.com' AND o.BillEmail NOT LIKE '' GROUP BY YEAR(OrderDate) So I'm just finding the customers who purchased in both those years. They're all unrelated. So in the end I'm just finding people who bought in 2008 and 2009, and then a potentially different group that bought in 2008 and 2010, and so on. For this to be accurate, do I have to use the same grouping of 2008 buyers each time? So they bought in 2009 and 2010 and 2011, and 2012? This is where I'm worried and not sure how to proceed or even find such data. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

• HTTP Headers: Max-Age vs Expires – Which One To Choose?

  Caching of static content like images, scripts, styles on the client browser reduces load on the webservers and also improves end users browsing experience by loading web pages quickly. We can use HTTP headers Expires or Cache-Control:max-age to cache content on client browser and set expiry time for them. Expire header is HTTP/1.0 standard and Cache-Control:max-age is introduced in HTTP/1.1 specification to solve the issues and limitation with Expire  header. Consider the following headers.   Cache-Control: max-age=24560 Expires: Tue, 15 May 2012 06:17:00 GMT The first header instructs web browsers to cache the content for 24560 seconds relative to the time the content is downloaded and expire it after the time period elapses. The second header instructs web browser to expiry the content after 15th May 2011 06:17. Out of these two options which one to use – max-age or expires? I prefer max-age header for the following reasons As max-age  is a relative value and in most of the cases it makes sense to set relative expiry date rather than an absolute expiry date. Expire  header values are complex to set – time format should be proper, time zones should be appropriate. Even a small mistake in settings these values results in unexpected behaviour. As Expire header values are absolute, we need to  keep changing them at regular intervals. Lets say if we set 2011 June 1 as expiry date to all the image files of this blog, on 2011 June 2 we should modify the expiry date to something like 2012 Jan 1. This add burden of managing the Expire headers. • F# &ndash; Immutable List vs a Mutable Collection in Arrays

  Another day gone by looking into F#. Today I thought I would ramble on about lists and arrays in F#. Coming from a C# background I barely ever use arrays now days in my C# code – why you may ask – because I find lists generally handle most of the business scenario’s that I come across. So it has been an interesting experience with me keep bumping into Array’s & Lists in F# and I wondered why the frequency of coming across arrays was so much more in this language than in C#. Take for instance the code I stumbled across today. let rng = new Random() let shuffle (array : 'a array) = let n = array.Length for x in 1..n do let i = n-x let j = rng.Next(i+1) let tmp = array.[i] array.[i] <- array.[j] array.[j] <- tmp array   Quite simply its purpose is to “shuffle” an array of items. So I thought, why does it have the “a’ array'” explicitly declared? What if I changed it to a list? Well… as I was about to find out there are some subtle differences between array’s & lists in F# that do not exist in C#. Namely, mutability. A list in F# is an ordered, immutable series of elements of the same type, while an array is a fixed-size zero based, mutable collection of consecutive data elements that are all of the same type. For me the keyword is immutable vs mutable collection. That’s why I could not simply swap the ‘a array with ‘a list in my function header because then later on in the code the syntax would not be valid where I “swap” item positions. i.e. array.[i] <- array.[j] would be invalid because if it was a list, it would be immutable and so couldn’t change by its very definition.. So where does that leave me? It’s to early days to say. I don’t know what the balance will be in future code – will I typically always use lists or arrays or even have a balance, but time will tell.
