• CLR - Common language runtime detected an invalid program in VS.NET

  I have been using Visual Studio 2008 quite long but lately I am getting this message when I am developing an application in C#: Common language runtime detected an invalid program This happens when I try to enter to the properties of a component (text masked box properties, tool box property etc..). But it really became a problem when I tried to launch an other solution that I downloaded from the Developer's 5 star program of Microsoft and it didn't allowed me to launch at all and just got the same problem... I looked for the answer at google but just got some clues about people having the same vague error but in different situations like in ASP.NET I would appreciate any help with this issue... :( I do not want to reinstall VS, that will be my last resource... Update: I never figured out what the problem was so I installed a virtual machine with Windows XP on it, there I only have Visual Studio and Netbeans.

• The standard map/associative-array structure to use in flash actionscript 3?

  I'm relatively new to flash, and is confused about what I should use to store and retrieve key value pairs. After some googling I've found various map-like things to choose from: 1) Use a Object: var map:Object = new Object(); map["key"] = "value"; The problem is that it seems to lack some very basic features. For example to even get the size of map I'd have to write a util method. 2) Use a Dictionary What does this standard library class provide over the simple object? It seems silly for it to exist if it's functionally identical to Object. 3) Go download some custom HashMap/HashTable implementation from the web. I've used a lot of modern languages, and this is the first time I haven't been able to find a library implementation of an associative array within 5 minutes. So I'd like to get some best-practice advice from an experienced flash developer. Thanks!

• Normal Priority Builds Will Not Build in TFS 2010

  I have two build processes setup in TFS 2010. One build starts when any developer checks code into TFS. The second build runs every night at 12:30am. I can see the builds have a priority of Normal in the queue. However no queued build ever is run until I change the priority to high. They will sit in the queue forever until the priority is changed. It appears there is a normal priority build in the queue that is stuck. However I cannot find it. I can select , , and and not see anything but these builds queued up. I can run them all and the next day I have queued builds again. I say this because I see the Build Service is configured for port 9192, which leads me to believe there is or was another Build Service on port 9191. Any idea how to resolve this issue? Thanks

• How do you deal with the more mundane parts of programming tasks?

  My experience as a developer is that many projects or tickets are a mix of a short and focused very interesting task (e.g., designing some API or a platform to solve something) and a lot of repetitive and mundane tasks that cannot be automated (such as certain refactorings to use the API or platform, implementation of certain tests, some GUI handling, etc). I believe that this is the nature of our profession, unless we are high-level architects or managements and can delegate this work. The only item in my personal arsenal when dealing with these tasks is to devote some of my attention to radio or audiobooks (preferably not in English as I find it hard to concentrate on two "streams" of English at the same time). I maintain sufficient attention to carry the task and don't lose concentration as fast. I'm wondering how others cope with these and maintain concentration.

• Nivo Slider thumbnails not displaying properly in IE

  Making a new site but something is happening to it in IE. I've purchased the Nivo Slider for wordpress plugin and it working fine however it's not displaying the thumbnails under the banner in IE. This is what it looks like in firefox This is what it looks like in IE Because this is a plugin (and the website isn't giving me any support after 2 days) I dont really have the source CSS but I was hoping you could take a look at it with come developer tools to see why it might not be showing in IE? This is what I have found .theme-default .nivo-controlNav.nivo-thumbs-enabled img { display: block; height: auto; width: auto; } Any help or advice is appreciated.

• Adding text labels to sliders in iPhone Settings application

  When configuring a Settings.bundle as part of an iPhone application bundle, it's trivial to add minimum and maximum value images to sliders (PSSliderSpecifier), but not simple maximum and minimum text labels. http://developer.apple.com/iPhone/library/documentation/PreferenceSettings/Conceptual/SettingsApplicationSchemaReference/Articles/PSSliderSpecifier.html iPhone gurus: Is anyone aware of a simple means to apply text labels to these sliders for use within the Settings application (therefore, no slider subclassing shenanigans; it all has to be done via a plist)? I suppose I could just use an image of the label but...ew. Bonus points if there's a way to show the current value of a slider in some sort of number format.

• How to determine, upon launch, whether the app crashed the last time it quit?

  One of the crash reporter frameworks I've found does it like this: If there exist crash reports in the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter folder for the app, it determines that a crash occurred before. Then it allows the user to send the developer the crash log. And the finally, it deletes those logs. It is this deletion that is bothering me. It's not acceptable to me. Maybe the user wants to look at those logs later. It is simply rude to the user to just delete his crash logs. So I'm looking for a better way to determine the crash. It doesn't really work to store the last read crash logs in the user defaults or the user data, because that would mean that if the user deletes the data and defaults (which he has a right to do whenever he or she wishes), and then launches the app, it will be detected as crashed the last time it was quit. So this doesn't work. Any ideas?

• How to dynamically add a Javascript function (and invoke)

  Based on a click event on the page, via ajax I fetch a block of html and script, I am able to take the script element and append it to the head element, however WebKit based browsers are not treating it as script (ie. I cannot invoke a function declared in the appended script). Using the Chrome Developer Tools I can see that my script node is indeed there, but it shows up differently then a script block that is not added dynamically, a non-dynamic script has a text child element and I cannot figure out a way to duplicate this for the dynamic script. Any ideas or better ways to be doing this? The driving force is there is potentially a lot of html and script that would never be needed unless a user clicks on a particular tab, in which case the relevant content (and script) would be loaded. On this link https://developer.android.com/training/basics/network-ops/connecting.html#AsyncTask it says to create a class that extends AsyncTask. So when i write the class it automatically implements the method as follows: private Object doInBackground(Object... args) {..} //it's fine but when i try writing just as it says in the tutorial: private String doInBackground(String... args) {..} //it gives an error and the error says: The method doInBackground(String...) of type MainActivity.DownloadWebpageText must override a superclass method. So how do i change Object to String without getting an error there?

But only -link http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/ is working i.e for String class link http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/lang/String.html?is-external=true is generated. but for android.app.Dialog , no link is generated. Please help !!

  I'm writing an HTML5 canvas visualization. According to the Chrome Developer Tools profiler, 90% of the work is being done in (program), which I assume is the V8 interpreter at work calling functions and switching contexts and whatnot. Other than logic optimizations (e.g., only redrawing parts of the visualization that have changed), what can I do to optimize the CPU usage of my JavaScript? I'm willing to sacrifice some amount of readability and extensibility for performance. Is there a big list I'm missing because my Google skills suck? I have some ideas but I'm not sure if they're worth it: Limit function calls When possible, use arrays instead of objects and properties Use variables for math operation results as much as possible Cache common math operations such as Math.PI / 180 Use sin and cos approximation functions instead of Math.sin() and Math.cos() Reuse objects when passing around data instead of creating new ones Replace Math.abs() with ~~ Study jsperf.com until my eyes bleed Use a preprocessor on my JavaScript to do some of the above operations

  I am trying to connect to oracle database. I am able to connect to it through a local SQL Developer tool by sticking something in the oranames.tns file. My question is that i will be deploying this website to a number of places. A few questions: What is the simplest way i can use to connect to this database and do very basic queries. • Design best practice - best way to handle user selection

  I'm an experienced developer (WPF) moving over to Android development. My question: an app I am developing allows the user to browse their local storage (such as SDCARD) and select a file. Now, should I simply create a new Activity (after the user has made a selection) to handle what I want to have the app do with that chosen file, -or- is the better approach to pass the path/name of the selected file back to the main Activity and let IT launch the next Activity? In other words, is the better practice to have the main Activity launch other (support) activities, or is it perfectly ok and normal to have one activity chain to another and on and on? Thanks!

• Port a Rails App from Windows to Mac or Linux

  Hello I've been a Rails developer on Windows for quite some time now, but I recently completed my biggest project yet (it's quite extensive, took me over a year to build) but I am having trouble deploying it. The combination of it's size, complexity and a windows environment is making it needlessly complex to deploy. I am thinking about getting an old mac mini and using it just for rails development. Either that or install unix on another box. Is there any way I can port my app to this mac or linux machine, without having to start over? I can't find any resources on the internets about this.

  Hey, I am onto a task in which i have to create a link in a doccument library either upload or new link,clicking on which a form/page "not infopath" will get open and allow to upload the doccument and along with that we have some text boxes on the same page which will be asking for the properties of the doccument(like "Customer of the doccument","content Developer") and after filling up all of the things when user click on submit than in the doccument library the value of the url as well as properties comes into the columns/fields of the doccument library.   I looked already and could't find anyting good. So a question is, are there any good web frameworks that would allow to easily develop GUI for the majority of high end phones? By this I mean It would have to work the same on majority of high end phones (forget the low cost ones) It would have to simplify the development and hide the ugly details from developer Clear design and good documentation. Also some stability on the market. The focus in on good looking and easy to make GUI. Javascript is only a plus. So basically I am looking for something like jQuery or maybe ExtJS for phone development. EDIT: It would be a big plus if it could be consumed in Delphi EDIT 2: If it was not clear, I am looking for a web base solution. So the target is HTML output and not native code.

• What are the typical reasons Javascript developed on IE fails on Firefox?

  Inspired by this post it occurs to me that I often suffer from the opposite problem. That is, I've got code in a legacy application designed only for Internet Explorer and I need to get it to work in Firefox. For example, I recently worked on an app that made heavy use of manually simulating click events, like this: select.options[0].click(); ...which completely broke the application in Firefox. But you wouldn't find that information in the answers to the other question, because that's not something you'd ever even attempt if your app first targeted Firefox. What other things should a developer updating a legacy IE-only application look for when migrating to modern browsers?

• Mono/C#: A good GUI toolkit ? looks good on KDE?

  Hi there, i am trying to get into developing for linux and i am a .net developer so i decided to give Mono a try. THe problem is that i am having problems trying to find a good gui toolkit. I have chosen KDE over GNOME because its a little bit more pleasing on the eye. I have looked here http://www.mono-project.com/Gui_Toolkits I get the sense GTK# is a good toolkit but its for GNOME. I know you can still run GNOME apps on KDE - but do they look nice ? probably not?? I would really appreciated any feedbakc from anyone who is doing the same or has done the same. I don't want to end up choosing the wrong toolkit and then have to change half way trhough. Also i was hoping to do all my development on my Windows PC and then just pass it to linux when i am ready... I presume this is possible? Thanks in advance

• Are there any good materials or examples on creating a custom Designer in the Delphi IDE

  I am working on creating a custom form designer in the Delphi IDE. I'm trying to use the RegisterCustomModule, TBaseCustomModule, and ICustomModule functions, classes, and interfaces. My first question on this pointed me to the Delphi Developer's Handbook and the idea that I could even create a custom form designer. However, that book seems to be all Delphi 3 information and things have really changed since then. I'm not finding any material in the Delphi Help file, and searches have not returned very much. I did find the Accidental Programmer's page on the Open Tools, but that looks like it was last up dated in 1998? It does at least have the correct unit names and uses the new interfaces. I'm willing to track down and buy an older book if that is the best reference.

  I am working with the sample Home application project on http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/Home/index.html I've added another value to the THUMBS_IDS and IMAGE_IDS Integer arrays in the Wallpaper class for a total of four wallpaper options. When I run the application with Device API version 7, Skin: HVGA, hw.lcd.density: 160, in portrait layout, the fourth wallpaper option is not shown. I need to use the directional keys in the emulator to see the 4th wallpaper option, because the first option is centered. I have modified only the wallpaper.xml file with a variety of android:layout_* options with no success at this point. How do I show all four of my wallpaper options?

  I am taking programming courses and we have been discussing Open Source and having a bit of an argument over the confusion. Just because Java is Open Source, the licensing on developed applications starts at the developer, correct? Someone is arguing about the use of code from a complete program just because "Java is Open Source". If I write a Java application, what are the limitations on how I can distribute it or how someone else can use it? Assume here that I DO NOT want someone having access to my source. Thanks
