• Implementing a normal website inside ASP.NET MVC 2

  I have a website consisting of an index.html, a number of style sheet files as well as some javascript files. Then I needed a way for this site to communicate efficiently with a Microsoft SQL Server, so I was recommended to use the MVC framework to facilitate that kind of communication. I created the C#.net controller code needed to output the necessary information from the database using URL parameters, so now I am trying to put the whole web-site together inside the MVC framework. I started an empty project-template in MVC 2 framework. I'm sure there must be a good way to implement the current code into this framework, but I am very uncertain as to what the best approach to this would be. Could anyone point me in the right direction here? I'm not sure whether I need to change any of the current HTML, or exactly what to add to it. I'd love to see some kind of guide or tutorial, or just any advice I can get as I try to learn this. Any help is very much appreciated!

• Grails or Play! for an ex-RoR developer ?

  Hello, I plan to begin learning a Java web framework (I love the Java API), I already used Rails and Django. I want something close to Java, but without all the complexity of J2EE. I've found 2 framework that could be good for me : Grails : Grails looks great, it use Groovy that is better than Java for web application (I think..), but it's slower, that use pure-java components (Hibernate, Strut, Spring), it looks pretty simple to deploy (send .war and it's ok !), the GSP is great ! It's a bit harder to debug (need to restart the server at each modification, and the stacktrace is a mix of Java and Groovy stack that is not always understandable..) Play! : This framework also looks great, it's faster than Grails (It's use directly Java), but I don't really like how it use Java, it modify the source code to transform the properties call as setXXX/getXXX, I'm not kind of that... The framework also have caching function that Grails don't (alreary) has. I don't really like the Template Engine. It's also easer to debug (no need to restart the server, and the stacktrace is clear) What do you recommend for ? I am looking for something easy to learn (I used a lot ruby and java, but a little bit java (But I love the Java API)), that is full featured (That's no a problem with all the Java Library availables, but if it's bundle and integrated I prefer), that scale and that is not too slow (faster than ruby), and if possible I would want something with a decent community to easily find support and answer to my questions ;) PS: No JRuby on Rails Thank you !

• Handle order dependence in loops

  Hey all, I'm making a templating system where I instantiate each tag using a foreach loop. The issue is that some of the tags rely on each other so, I'm wondering how to get around that ordering from the looping. Here's an example: Class A { public $width; __construct() { $this->width = $B->width; // Undefined! Or atleast not set yet.. } } Class B { public $width; __construct() { $this->width = "500px"; } __tostring() { return "Hello World!"; } } Template.php $tags = array("A", "B"); foreach ($tags as $tag) { $TagObj[$tag] = new $tag(); } echo $TagObj['A']->width; // Nadamundo! EDIT: Ok just to clarify.. My main problem is that Class A relies on Class B, but class A is instantiated before class B, so therefore width has not yet been defined in class B. I am looking for a good way to make sure all the classes are loaded for everyone allowing the interdependencies to exist. For the future, please don't consider any syntax errors.. I just made up this example on the spot. Also assume that I have access to class B from class A after class B gets instantiated. I know this has applications elsewhere and I'm sure this has been solved before, if someone could enlighten me or point me in the right direction that'd be great! Thanks! Matt Mueler

• Microsoft Reporting: Setting subreport parameters in code

  How can I set a parameter of a sub-report? I have successfully hooked myself up to the SubreportProcessing event, I can find the correct sub-report through e.ReportPath, and I can add datasources through e.DataSources.Add. But I find no way of adding report parameters?? I have found people suggesting to add them to the master report, but I don't really want to do that, since the master report shouldn't have to be connected to the sub-report at all, other than that it is wrapping the sub-report. I am using one report as a master template, printing name of the report, page numbers etc. And the subreport is going to be the report itself. And if I could only find a way to set those report parameters of the sub-report I would be good to go... Clarification: Creating/Defining the parameters is not the problem. The problem is to set their values. I thought the natural thing to do was to do it in the SubreportProcessing event. And the SubreportProcessingEventArgs do in fact have a Parameters property. But it is read only! So how do you use that? How can I set their value?

• Is there anyway to carry a value in php forward to a second page?

  I have created a php site, and previously it was listing only products with defined values. I have now changed it to include an array of products for example all products WHERE id = "spotlights" and this works great so it means I can add new products just to the database, but I still have to add the second page manually. e.g going from the product div on the main page, through to www.example.com/spotlight_1.php Is there anyway in PHP to carry the data from my index.php e.g. the ID through to the next page? so that I can have a template product.php page, and I can use a database pull to echo the product information required. So on index.php i click on the product with ID="1" and on the product.php page, it loads the relevant data for product 1. I can write the php SQL/mySQL calls myself, its just the way to carry accross a value from the previous page which I dont understand Regards Henry p.s. all the IDs and things are stored in the database already as 1 to 3digit values e.g. 3 or or 93 or 254 Any advice as always is greatly appreciated Regards Henry

• google maps not working anymore at the drop of a hat

  2 days ago, I was working on a project that involves google maps. The website showed the maps on the pages just fine. Now, I come back to my workstation, nothing has changed, expect for the fact that the google maps won't show up anymore. The code is identical, nobody has touched my machine since I was gone, I've checked the html, everything is perfect and still this isn't working... The Javascript console is giving no errors and the code is identical to a backup I make everytime I call it a day. 2 days ago it was working, today it isn't. I've even copied the source code, put it into an html file and tried that, but the same result. I'm at a loss here. • Web Deployment Project failed to map path for include virtual

  I am building my site with a web deployment project but the build fails with a number of errors all relating to the "#include virtual" directives in my master page. The includes are necessary to import a set of centrally managed html template files. Here is an example of the include directive and associated error: <!-- #include virtual="/v3/sits/pdpdev/assets-templates/inc/head.html" --> /PDPRegistration.csproj/Pages/ContentPage.Master(15): error ASPPARSE: Failed to map the path '/v3/sits/pdpdev/assets-templates/inc/head.html'. The error for each included file actually appears multiple times. I'm not sure what is being mapped or why, but this was never a problem until I started using WDP (which I wanted to alter web.config depending on the build environment, among other things.) The project is built locally on my PC and then copied to the web server via a mapped drive. I found a few solutions on the 'net involving IIS metabase - they weren't quite clear to me, and I'm not sure if they apply given how I build and deploy the project (that is, would I have to build on the same system as IIS in order to make use of the metabase?) Can anyone suggest how I can get my project to build with WDP?

• Web CMS That Outputs to Flat Static Pages (.html) via FTP to Remote Server?

  I have a web app project that I will be starting to work on shortly. One of the features included is going to be a content management system where users can add content and then that content will be combined with a template and then output as a regular .html file. This .html file would then be FTPed to their own web host. As I've always believed in not reinventing the wheel I figured I'd see if there are any quality customizable CMSes out there that do this already do this. For instance, Blogger.com allows you to post all of your content to your account there; but offers the option to let you use your own hosting. Any time you publish a new article then a new .html page is generated (as well as an updated index page with links to the new article) and then the updated content is FTPed to your own server. What I would like is something like this that I can modify to more closely suit my needs. Required Features: Able to host on my own server Written in PHP Users add content through their account, then when posted it is FTPed as .html to their server Any appropriate pages are also updated to link to the new content (like the index page or whatnot) Templateable Customizable Optional (but very much desired) features: Written in CodeIgniter or a similar PHP framework While CodeIgniter isn't strictly required, I would very much prefer it. It speeds up development time and makes things much easier to implement. So - any suggestions? I've stumbled across a few CMSes that push to remote servers as static pages, but the ones I've found all are hosted on the developers servers which means that I cannot modify it at all. • Custom pager in my Gridview 1st time works, next doesn't :

  Hi guys, i'm with one strange problem. I am extending a control from a Gridview, and adding a dropdown to paging to the page i want. In my custom gridview i added a ITemplate than contains 4 image buttons and one dropdownlist (4 images - 1st, prev, next, last) (1 ddl - to page) and add him to my custom gridview.. I added a selectindexchange event to dropdown, to fire when a index is changed The problem is: The first time i load the page with my control it is really ok.. but when i change index, in debug i see to run constructor of control, creating footer template, and guess.. the method of indexchange isn't fired and returns an exception saying: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.ImageButton' to type 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.Table'. The problem is that I also want the ListBoxItem to be selected when one of its TextBox's child gets focused. To achieve this I add a trigger that sets IsSelected to true when IsKeyboardFocusWithin is true: <Trigger Property="IsKeyboardFocusWithin" Value="True"> <Setter Property="IsSelected" Value="True" /> </Trigger> When I add this trigger the Item is selected when the focus is on a child TextBox, but the first behaviour disappears. Now when I click outside the ListBox, the item is de-selected. How can I keep both behaviours?

• Is it normal for C++ static initialization to appear twice in the same backtrace?

  I'm trying to debug a C++ program compiled with GCC that freezes at startup. GCC mutex protects function's static local variables, and it appears that waiting to acquire such a lock is why it freezes. How this happens is rather confusing. First module A's static initialization occurs (there are __static_init functions GCC invokes that are visible in the backtrace), which calls a function Foo(), that has a static local variable. The static local variable is an object who's constructor calls through several layers of functions, then suddenly the backtrace has a few ??'s, and then it's is in the static initialization of a second module B (the __static functions occur all over again), which then calls Foo(), but since Foo() never returned the first time the mutex on the local static variable is still set, and it locks. How can one static init trigger another? My first theory was shared libraries -- that module A would be calling some function in module B that would cause module B to load, thus triggering B's static init, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Module A doesn't use module B at all. So I have a second (and horrifying) guess. Say that: Module A uses some templated function or a function in a templated class, e.g. foo<int>::bar() Module B also uses foo<int>::bar() Module A doesn't depend on module B at all At link time, the linker has two instances of foo<int>::bar(), but this is OK because template functions are marked as weak symbols... At runtime, module A calls foo<int>::bar, and the static init of module B is triggered, even though module B doesn't depend on module A! Why? Because the linker decided to go with module B's instance of foo::bar instead of module A's instance at link time. Is this particular scenario valid? Or should one module's static init never trigger static init in another module?

• Which CMS do I need? Needs to be easy to post a certain kind of post

  Hi, I'm creating a site for a video store and it needs to be CMS. I'm doing this for free so I need to use a free CMS like Wordpress, Drupal or Joomla. Do I need a new CMS, a plugin or some PHP of my own? What I need: User accounts Categories Custom post Here's the site as it stands with WP: http://sundancevideo.ca. Right now an experimental site to try to work this out. What I've done now, is created a "Draft" that includes a template table with images and text and so on. The user would then have to copy everything, past into a new post and replace necessary. This really isn't working well. As you may notice by the condition of the posts. What I would prefer is if it was integrated into the WP UI. Like a field for "Description" and field for "Image" where they can upload the images as necessary. This would then generate post, with a table including all the information and images, for as many movies that were added in the UI. Please ask if I'm not being clear. • Tal condition always evaluates to false

  I'm using plone and trying to display a form result in a page template. I'm trying to filter some database results using tal:condition with a python expression but it always evaluates to false. The code looks like this: <tr tal:repeat="result view/results"> <td> <span tal:condition="python:view.teams[0]==result.team_id" tal:replace="result/position">Position</span></td> <td> <span tal:condition="python:view.teams[1]==result.team_id" tal:replace="result/position">Position</span></td> </tr> I want the table cells to be filled with the team position when the team id is matched in the result, but the cells always are empty. If I remove the tal:condition from the span and replace the tal:replace="result/position" with tal:replace=python:view.teams[0]==result.team_id it prints True or False so I can check that the result is correct. Can anyone help me about this issue? Why does tal:condition allways evaluate false?

All the Magento files will be in source control (SVN). At this stage, I can't see any requirements for changing the DB, so the 3 databases will be manually maintained. Specifically, How do you apply Magento upgrades? (Individually in each env, or on dev then roll out, or just give up on upgrades?) What files/folders do leave alone in each environment (e.g. magento/app/etc/local.xml) Do you restrict developers to editing specific files/folders? Do you restrict theme designers to editing specific files/folders? How do you manage database changes? Theme Designer Files/Folders Designers can restricted to editing the following folders- app/design/frontend/your_interface/your_theme/layout/ app/design/frontend/your_interface/your_theme/template/ app/design/frontend/your_interface/your_theme/locale/ skin/frontend/your_interface/your_theme/ Extension Developer Files/Folders Extension developers can edit the following folders/files- /app/code/local /app/etc/modules/<Namespace>_<Module>.xml Database environment management As the store's base URL is stored in the database, you cannot just copy databases between environments. Options include- Overriding the base url in php. Blog article on setting up dev and staging databases Changing the base url in the database after copying. (Where is this stored?) Doing a MySQLDump or backup, then doing a replace on the URL in the SQL file.

• bad_alloc occuring when allocating small structs

  A bad_alloc has started showing up in some code which looks perfectly valid to me and has worked very well in the past. The bad alloc only occurs once every 50-3000 iterations of the code, which is also confusing. The code itself is from a singly linked list, simply adding a new element to the queue: template<typename T> struct container { inline container() : next(0) {} container *next; T data; }; void push(const T &data) { container<T> *newQueueMember = new container<T>; //... unrelated to crash } Where T is: struct test { int m[256]; }; Changing the size of the array allocated array to anything but very small values (1-8 ints) still results in a bad_alloc occasionally. A few extra notes about my program: - I used Poco::ThreadPool to thread my program. I've only recently added this functionality, before I had it running with Win32 threads. However, only the main thread ever calls push(). - I am also occasionally getting other crashes which could be related. However, when I try to debug with visual studio 2008, I can't navigate back to the call stack, or the crash happens deep within new(). Thanks in advance.

• Javascript onclick stops working, multiple dynamically created divs.

  I have run into a strange problem, i am creating a lot of dynamically divs. And i recently found out that some of my divs doesn't fire the onclick event? All the divs are created using the same template, so why are some not working? Most of the time, its the 4-5 from the bottom. If you click on one of the others and then try again, you might get one of those to trigger. But only sporadically. Code to create the divs: GameField.prototype.InitField = function(fieldNumber) { var newField = document.createElement("div"); if (fieldNumber == 0 || fieldNumber == 6 || fieldNumber == 8 || fieldNumber == 17) newField.className = 'gameCellSmall borderFull gameText gameTextAlign'; else newField.className = 'gameCellSmall borderWithoutTop gameText gameTextAlign'; var instance = this; if (fieldNumber == 6 || fieldNumber == 7 || fieldNumber == 17) { } else newField.onclick = function() { instance.DivClick(fieldNumber); return false; } this.fields[fieldNumber] = newField; this.score[fieldNumber] = 0; return newField; } I added the return false to the click function, but it still behaves strangely. Why are some not triggering? I create around 18 divs / player. But it happens even if i just create one player. Do i perhaps need to cancel the event once i am done with it? (Like the return false; is trying to do)

• Django formset doesn't validate

  Hello, I am trying to save a formset but it seems to be bypassing is_valid() even though there are required fields. To test this I have a simple form: class AlbumForm(forms.Form): name = forms.CharField(required=True) The view: @login_required def add_album(request, artist): artist = Artist.objects.get(slug__iexact=artist) AlbumFormSet = formset_factory(AlbumForm) if request.method == 'POST': formset = AlbumFormSet(request.POST, request.FILES) if formset.is_valid(): return HttpResponse('worked') else: formset = AlbumFormSet() return render_to_response('submissions/addalbum.html', { 'artist': artist, 'formset': formset, }, context_instance=RequestContext(request)) And the template: <form action="" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data">{% csrf_token %} {{ formset.management_form }} {% for form in formset.forms %} <ul class="addalbumlist"> {% for field in form %} <li> {{ field.label_tag }} {{ field }} {{ field.errors }} </li> {% endfor %} </ul> {% endfor %} <div class="inpwrap"> <input type="button" value="add another"> <input type="submit" value="add"> </div> </form> What ends up happening is I hit "add" without entering a name then HttpResponse('worked') get's called seemingly assuming it's a valid form. I might be missing something here, but I can't see what's wrong. What I want to happen is, just like any other form if the field is required to spit out an error if its not filled in. Any ideas?

• Long running transactions with Spring and Hibernate?

  The underlying problem I want to solve is running a task that generates several temporary tables in MySQL, which need to stay around long enough to fetch results from Java after they are created. Because of the size of the data involved, the task must be completed in batches. Each batch is a call to a stored procedure called through JDBC. The entire process can take half an hour or more for a large data set. To ensure access to the temporary tables, I run the entire task, start to finish, in a single Spring transaction with a TransactionCallbackWithoutResult. Otherwise, I could get a different connection that does not have access to the temporary tables (this would happen occasionally before I wrapped everything in a transaction). This worked fine in my development environment. However, in production I got the following exception: java.sql.SQLException: Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction This happened when a different task tried to access some of the same tables during the execution of my long running transaction. What confuses me is that the long running transaction only inserts or updates into temporary tables. All access to non-temporary tables are selects only. From what documentation I can find, the default Spring transaction isolation level should not cause MySQL to block in this case. So my first question, is this the right approach? Can I ensure that I repeatedly get the same connection through a Hibernate template without a long running transaction? If the long running transaction approach is the correct one, what should I check in terms of isolation levels? Is my understanding correct that the default isolation level in Spring/MySQL transactions should not lock tables that are only accessed through selects? What can I do to debug which tables are causing the conflict, and prevent those tables from being locked by the transaction?

• Customizing orchard theme parts

  Hi, I am trying to write a custom theme for orchard and am not having much success so far. I have read Bertrand Le Roy's article on part alternates but I can't seem to get it to work. I am displaying a list of recent blog posts on the front page, pretty standard. I wish to change the markup produced by the meta data part i.e the time format. Should I just create an alternate with a fixed name like "Metadata-BlogPost" and use that, to make this general purpose it should really be a dynamic name so I can use another alternate template elsewhere. • Why does my iOS app crash when trying presentModalViewController?

  I've been banging my head against this all day, it seems like something simple but I can't figure it out. I've got an iOS app that I created using the "View-based Application" template in XCode. • Webpage shared with like button not showing in users timeline

  I have a single pages and a one page that lists all of the single pages. On the overview page you can like each single page with their url. And of corse you can do the same when you are viewing a single page. My issue is very strange. Most of the pages that I would like show up on my timeline. But then there are some that don't show after I click like, not even if I click on "Post to Facebook". This page will not show in a users timeline if liked ore "Post'ed to Facebook". http://www.inspiredbyiceland.com/inspiration/iceland-airwaves/valdimar/ But this one will http://www.inspiredbyiceland.com/inspiration/iceland-airwaves/snorri-helgason/ But these pages are excls the same, they use the same template so the code should not be any different, and in fact I cant see any differents between these pages that could be causing this kind of problem.   I am thinking of setting up my own freelance business but coming from a workplace that offers a particular service to huge clients, I do not know what are the current charges for websites are nowadays. I know that as technology just keeps changing and changing (most of the time, for the better...), the amount you charge for a single website is constantly differing. Like for example, I don't think static websites (with just static html pages) are that expensive today, no? (as i said, I might be mistaken since I haven't really touched on this freelance industry yet) So, freelance web-developers out there, can you give me estimates on how much you charge for your clients? Some examples of websites that I want to know an approx charge: ~10 static html pages ~10 dhtml pages (with maybe a flasy menu on the top/side) Database driven websites with a standard CMS (be it the one you developed, or an existing one) Database driven but with a custom-built cms for the particular client Using an existing template for a design Starting the design from scratch etc... I know that the normally clients don't really care about the technologies used to construct their websites, but do you charge differently according to which technology you use to build the website with?; as in, is the technology a factor when setting the price? ...being ASP.Net, PHP, Ruby On Rails etc... Also, how do you go on about charging your clients for your services? What are the major factors that you consider when setting a price tag for a website to a client ? And better yet, how do you even find prospective clients? <= [or should I leave this question for a different post?] Btw, in your post, also mention some numbers (in cash values, be it in USD, GBP, EUR or anything) because I want to be able to take calculate some averages from this post when some answers stack up

• Moving inserted container element if possible

  I'm trying to achieve the following optimization in my container library: when inserting an lvalue-referenced element, copy it to internal storage; but when inserting rvalue-referenced element, move it if supported. The optimization is supposed to be useful e.g. if contained element type is something like std::vector, where moving if possible would give substantial speedup. However, so far I was unable to devise any working scheme for this. My container is quite complicated, so I can't just duplicate insert() code several times: it is large. I want to keep all "real" code in some inner helper, say do_insert() (may be templated) and various insert()-like functions would just call that with different arguments. My best bet code for this (a prototype, of course, without doing anything real): #include <iostream> #include <utility> struct element { element () { }; element (element&&) { std::cerr << "moving\n"; } }; struct container { void insert (const element& value) { do_insert (value); } void insert (element&& value) { do_insert (std::move (value)); } private: template <typename Arg> void do_insert (Arg arg) { element x (arg); } }; int main () { { // Shouldn't move. container c; element x; c.insert (x); } { // Should move. container c; c.insert (element ()); } } However, this doesn't work at least with GCC 4.4 and 4.5: it never prints "moving" on stderr. • Struts2 Tiles in Google app engine

  I am trying to build an java web application using struts2 and tiles in Google App Engine. • DataGrid: dynamic DataTemplate for dynamic DataGridTemplateColumn

  I want to show data in a datagrid where the data is a collection of public class Thing { public string Foo { get; set; } public string Bar { get; set; } public List<Candidate> Candidates { get; set; } } public class Candidate { public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } ... } where the number of candidates in Candidates list varies at runtime. Desired grid layout looks like this Foo | Bar | Candidate 1 | Candidate 2 | ... | Candidate N I'd like to have a DataTemplate for each Candidate as I plan changing it during runtime - user can choose what info about candidate is displayed in different columns (candidate is just an example, I have different object). That means I also want to change the column templates in runtime although this can be achieved by one big template and collapsing its parts. I know about two ways how to achieve my goals (both quite similar): Use AutoGeneratingColumn event and create Candidates columns Add Columns manually In both cases I need to load the DataTemplate from string with XamlReader. Before that I have to edit the string to change the binding to wanted Candidate. Is there a better way how to create a DataGrid with unknown number of DataGridTemplateColumn? Note: This question is based on dynamic datatemplate with valueconverter
