• HID USB Very Strange Problem...

  I realy hope some one can help me here cause i search all over the web and nothing comes up.. I allways used PS/2 KB and Mouse and a USB KeyPad (Genius ErgoMedia 500 Gaming Explorer) to play some games, mmorpg, fps, you named, very good whit 11 keys whit possible macros etc etc... Now it comes the problem, i have a USB mouse that have 4 extra buttons, and i need more button, i love buttons.. Well, i plug in the USB mouse and disconectes de PS/2. Everything is ok until i toutch the mouse. If i do so, the ErgoMedia goes off, then on, then i mouse the mouse or press a button and all over again. Yesterday i went buying a new mouse that i liked, a USB mouse too (NPlay whit macros and all that stuff 3600dpi...) Hoping the problem was only whit the other mouse, but no.. It does the exact same thing, ErgoMedia keeps disconecting and conecting everytime i toutch the mouse. What i allready did: Update drivers of both mouses Update drivers of ErgoMedia (no specific drivers(Windows based)) Update drivers of MB Chipset (Actualy no, cause it was up to date allready) Trying other USB Ports (4 Ports back, 4 Ports Front and even 1 Port in 16 card slot device) Disable the "Allows Windows to shut down the energy bla bla" thing in Device Setings. Look up in the Device Setings only apear a problem on the ergomedia (Human interface Device) when i move the damm mouse.. Using Everest to read behavier, everything normal, exepts the disconecting thing, but no errors. Not a power suply, only the ErgoMedia and the mouse are in the USBs, and i allready disable the 16 card reader whit one usb slot to see.. Clean the IRQ registry. Look the entire internet for a fix solution. Help others problems wile looking for a fix for me (Im not a pro but not a completly stupid) Talking to you beggin you to help me as a last resorce... Machine: Acer M3641 Core2Quad 64x Based OS Vista 64b 4GbRAM HD Audio and Graphics I realy hope some one out there knows a fix for this, maybe it´s a simple thing, so simple that i´m to stupid to see that..   I have Ubuntu 12.04.1. Last time I did nothing especial, but suddenly some problem appear: I have a login screen (using lightdm), when I attempt a login, I get a console session and returned to the login screen. I see that it is a known issue, so I tried everything from following steps: To removed .XAuthority Configure to use gdm Reinstall lightdm To include my user to nopasswdlogin group But nothing help... • All files trying to start in Notepad

  This question has been asked, but the solutions given were worthless to me because ALL files are trying to open in Notepad. I mistakenly associated all exe files with Notepad and everything is trying to open within Notepad now. That includes regedit, so suggesting I use regedit to doctor files does not work (cmd window will not open from Winkey + R - Run). It also includes any program I download to fix the issue. I also can not right click and choose Open With because that is not a given option when right clicking on a majority of files, at least none of the exe files I want to start. Yes, I tried it on the program files, not the shortcut. I also can not use System Restore because it, too, tries to open in Notepad. I've been banging my head uselessly on this for hours. Could someone help me out?

• Zero sized tar.gz file found inside a tar.gz file

  My current directory contains a single file like this- $ls -l -rw-r--r-- 1 root staff 8 May 28 09:10 pavan Now, I want to tar and gzip this file like $tar -cvf - * 2>/dev/null |gzip -vf9 > pavan.tar.gz 2>/dev/null (I am aware I am creating the zipped file in the same directory as the original file) When I run the above tar/gzip commands around 20 times, a few times I observe that the final tarred and zipped file pavan.tar.gz file has a ZERO sized pavan.tar.gz file. I am not sure from where is this zero sized file coming into the archive from. Note: I am NOT running tar/gzip commands on an already existing tar.gz file. I always make sure that the directory has only one file before running the commands On googling, as described here, I suspected that the tar.gz being created was also part of the file being archived. But in my case, gzip is the one who's creating the final file and by the time gzip runs, tar should be done tarring. This is happening on AIX but I've used Linux tag too, to draw more attention, as I guess the problem is platform independent.

• Windows XP, Preference menu's hidden for many programs

  I don't know when this started happening, but it has been several months since I first noticed it. Basically, when I go to a preferences menu of some programs, the preferences window is completely hidden, but the program see's it as being open. This prevents me from interacting with the preferences and the actual program. So far I've noticed it on Adobe Illustrator and Netbeans. Illustrator when I select edit - Preferences - An Option. On Netbeans it happens when I right click on a site and select properties. Here's a link to a screen shot after I click on the preferences menu (I don't have enough points to post an image yet): http://www.jestep.com/images/screen-2.jpg. Note that the main workspace is grayed out. I have to hit Escape to close the hidden preferences window. I've tried unstinstalling, completely wiping the registry of any trace of the program and reinstalling. Thought it may have been a multi-monitor issue when I switched from 2 monitors down to 1, but menu's were not on other monitor when I plugged one back in. I've reset workspaces, windows display, windows performance settings, changed resolution, safe mode, everything I can think of. I cannot figure out what would cause the same problem on completely unrelated software, and I cannot reset it by reinstalling. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I'm running Debian stable on VirtualBox on Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate. It's been running great, but I needed some newer packages, so I put sid in my sources.list to upgrade to unstable (as I've done a dozen times on various Linux boxes over the years). When I upgraded, something went screwy and it asked me to run apt-get -f install to fix them, which gave this: (Reading database ... 77846 files and directories currently installed.)   Hello, I bought a Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 web camera for may parent's Dell Dimension 3000 computer running XP SP 3, and I cannot get it to run. THe installation ran successfully, but when I try to run it, I get the error: Faulting application lifecam.exe, version 3.21.263.0, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5781, fault address 0x00012afb. The microsoft help link really didn't help... how do I even resolve this type of error? Thanks.

• HP Printer scrolls "printing" forever - but nothing happens

  I got a used HP Officejet 7130 all-in-one printer. I tried printing a text document, and it shows up in the queue (and says "printing"), and the printer display says "Printing" "Press Cancel to cancel job." - and it cyles that text forever, but nothing ever happens (after a couple of initial quiet noises.) I tried to print a test page from the printer, and I get the same "printing" message. I checked the hp website, and this problem is not on their list. (They are expecting a queue problem, error message, etc.) I did initially get a message that it needs new ink cartridges, but I pressed to get past that. It's supposed to try to print anyway. I don't want to buy ink cartridges for a printer that is broken. When I press it cancels correctly.

• Switch Windows 8 from a hybrid MBR/GPT => GPT only on Macbook Pro Retina

  I used DiskUtility+Bootcamp Wizard to setup my hard drive for Windows 8 (final MSDN). Somewhere in that process, the Apple tools turned my GPT disk into a hybrid MBR/GPT. All my 4 primary MBR partitions are used up, so when I try turning on Bitlocker in Windows 8, it complains about not finding a System drive. I know on Windows 8 the Bitlocker setup tries to create the 200(?)MB system partition if it's missing. However with all 4 partitions filled I suspect it can't create system drive = it can't find it = throws back an error like "BitLocker Setup could not find a target system drive. You may need to manually prepare your drive for BitLocker". I've already tried disabling hibernation, swap file etc. Now I'm thinking that if I were to get rid of the MBR scheme altogether, perhaps I can be alright within the GPT world without MBR's 4 primary partitions limit. So, how can I get rid of the MBR tables on the hybrid scheme in a manner that still leaves Mac OS and Windows 8 in working conditions? Details: Hardware is the MacbookPro Retina. Through my research, it seems that the most probable cause is that the onboard audio is disabled in the BIOS. However, the option to enable the onboard audio just isn't present in the BIOS. • Which is faster, copying everything at once or one thing at a time?

  I am transferring a bunch (20+) of large (1GB+) files to my external flash drive over USB 2.0. Is it quicker to just sling them all over at once (as in one at a time but not waiting for the previous transfer to finish) so that there are multiple transfers going on, or transfer one, wait for it to finish, transfer the next. The files are coming from a variety of locations so I can't do one single big transfer. Are there any other advantages to one way or the other that are worth considering?

• Windows XP consuming drive letters

  This one's a bit of a stumper. I'm running XP SP3, current with all fixes, etc. My problem is that I can assign a drive letter to a container file (explained below), it works just fine. But once I close the container, the drive letter is no longer available until the next boot. I've got some confidential data that I've placed in a container volume. I've used TrueCrypt (www.truecrypt.com) and FreeOTFE (www.freeotfe.org), with both installed and portable versions for both, with the same result. I open the container file, assign it to a drive letter (say R:), and run some portable apps that are within the volume. When I'm done, I close the container, and the drive letter is released. Fine so far. However, when I attempt to re-open it, the previous drive letter (in this case R:) is no longer available. It's not mapped to anything, it's just unavailable. Even attempting something like "subst R: C:\" returns "Invalid Parameter - R:". I can use the S: drive, no problem, but the next day I have to use T:, then U:, etc. Eventually, I have to reboot to reclaim all of of the drive letters. Unfortunately, everything I've read about drive letters relates to USB assignments, which doesn't apply here. I've tried the "show hidden" command (set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1) with no success. And the Disk Management tool doesn't apply either, since it's not a physical drive. Does anyone know where Windows keeps the list of drive letters? And is there anything short of a reboot that can be used to reset it?

• Replacing local home server with VPS: Suggestions?

  So right now, I'm running an old box with a 2TB HDD in it. I use this as a file server for the home network, as well as a box for downloading large files which are synced via Dropbox. Lots of other tinkering things, too. Basically, I'm sick of paying extra for the power and having to worry about drive failures and whatnot. I'd rather get a remote server, let someone else manage it and provide access from the Internet. So, I've been looking for a Windows VPS that would give me access to install things and tinker, and I'm having a problem finding a host that offers more than 100GB of hard drive space. If they do offer a package with 100GB of storage, everything else is waaayyyy more than what I actually need. The idea is to create a permanent VPN connection from the cloud server to my home network to provide a transparent solution so I'm not having to go to lengths to transfer files or whatnot. I think a VPS solution will allow me to do this. I would like 1TB of storage space, minimum 100Mbps Internet connection, minimum 250GB bandwidth, admin access. Anyone have anything? Or am I being unreasonable? If I am, why?

• Windows 7 - Windows get autoselected

  I have a really annoying problem in Windows 7. I just updated Windows vista to Windows 7 32bit The problem is that every second the top windows is being selected. To explain better what happens: I open task manager and leave it there, then i select a icon on desktop, after 1 second, the icon is deselected and Task Manager windows is selected. Also i see windows borders blinking, every second. This is Annoying, because every time i do a right click or selecting a menu in any application, every second the menu get closed... I do not know what is doing this, i searched in task manager for some 'bad' application running, but seems ok, tried closing all programs but it's still there. If i restart the computer first i don't get that problem, but after a while it start.. I noticed that When using Visual Studio Express 2012, but i don't think is the problem, because also if i close VS the problem remains. Hope you can help me, i'm getting hungry!! It's annoying!

• How to back up server with rsync, preserving ownership/permissions without root login

  I am setting up a backup server on which I want to run rsync over ssh to backup content on other servers every night. I would like to set up ssh keys to make it password-less, but I want to preserve ownership of files and permissions. There are a number of users on the server to be backed up which won't all exist on the backup server. What would be the best way to do this? I guess the backup job will need to connect as root to , but I don't want to enable root ssh access on the servers. thanks for any tips, oli ps, all servers are running UBUNTU Server 12.04 LTS and are behind a university firewall.

  I want to force a netmask on my Ubuntu machine. For example, I want 11.0.0.1 to get a netmask of 255.255.255.0 I tried editing /etc/network/interfaces and I forced the desired netmask, but as soon as I restarted the interfaces it changed it back to the default value. When I used ifconfig the netmask that I gave survived the interface restart but it was reset as soon as I rebooted the machine. Is there a way to force an "illegal" netmask on an interface?

• Microsoft Word Document Recovery seems unresolvable

  We work on a server (Windows Server 2003 Enterprise) that a bunch of us developers remote in using Remote Desktop Connection, and now every "other" time I open up word I get this Document Recovery pane: As you can see, "Delete" and "Show Repairs" are disabled (I don't think this is my document). "Open" or "Save As" works, but it never marks this document recovered, it just keeps coming up every "other" time I open up word. I don't even care about this document. How can I remove this document from the list so that it doesn't come up anymore? Update: As per Moab's comment, I had the user delete the file. But the Document Recovery still shows up with that item every other time Word is opened. The only difference now is that clicking on "Open" produces this (obvious) message: How can I clear this list? BTW, the user that owned this document was never getting the Document Recovery pane.

• How to import UTM coordinates into Google Earth?

  I have some points in UTM coordinates that I'd like to import into Google Earth. Google Earth is able to show UTM coordinates, but I have not found a way to import points or enter coordinates in a placemark's properties with UTM coordinates. Is there any possibility to do this with just Google Earth or do I need to convert my data set externally? I do have separate tools for coordinate conversion, but I'd like to spare the extra step.

• Swithing from Windows to Mac OSX - Application recommendations

  My new Macbook Pro 13" notebook should arrive this monday. And I can't wait! I am a long (looong) time Windows user. And after a good week of researching, I am still somewhat in the dark as far as which applications are "must-haves" on Mac OSX. I would be very greatful if you guys would recommend your favorite applications. I'm looking for recommendations in the following categories... General use applications: File-compression applications, peer-to-peer applications, CD/DVD ripping/burning applications, messaging applications, etc. Web-development applications: Code editors, graphic design applications, and everything in between Must-have-cannot-live-without applications: Things like Growl and other applications that live within Mac OSX's preference panel Virtiualization applications: VMware Fusion, Parallels, etc.
