• Disabling browser print options (headers, footers, margins) from page?

  I have seen this question asked in a couple of different ways on SO and several other websites, but most of them are either too specific or out-of-date. I'm hoping someone can provide a definitive answer here without pandering to speculation. Is there a way, either with CSS or javascript, to change the default printer settings when someone prints within their browser? And of course by "prints from their browser" I mean some form of HTML, not PDF or some other plug-in reliant mime-type. Please note: If some browsers offer this and others don't (or if you only know how to do it for some browsers) I welcome browser-specific solutions. Similarly, if you know of a mainstream browser that has specific restrictions against EVER doing this, that is also helpful, but some fairly up-to-date documentation would be appreciated. (simply saying "that goes against XYZ's security policy" isn't very convincing when XYZ has made significant changes in said policy in the last three years). Finally, when I say "change default print settings" I don't mean forever, just for my page, and I am referring specifically to print margins, headers, and footers. I am very aware that CSS offers the option of changing the page orientation as well as the page margins. One of the many struggles is with Firefox. If I set the page margins to 1 inch, it ADDS this to the half inch it already puts into place. I very much want to reduce the usage of PDFs on my client's site, but the infringement on presentation (as well as the lack of reliability) are their main concern.

• Should I make my MutexLock volatile?

  I have some code in a function that goes something like this: void foo() { { // scope the locker MutexLocker locker(&mutex); // do some stuff.. } bar(); } The function call bar() also locks the mutex. I am having an issue whereby the program crashes (for someone else, who has not as yet provided a stack trace or more details) unless the mutex lock inside bar is disabled. Is it possible that some optimization is messing around with the way I have scoped the locker instance, and if so, would making it volatile fix it? Is that a bad idea? Thanks.

  I have simple Haxe app like class Main { public static function main() { trace("hello world"); } } I know how to compile such app for windows (not as SWF but as app from pure C\C++ )(and you can see how here but be worned thay use hxcpp\0,4 ) The problem is - I do not want to compile app for Windows Vista or 7 or XP I want to get PURE C\C++ code (better in one place as one project) for for example compiling that code on windows mobile or where ever I want to. So is there any algorithm for turning simple HAXE code into C/C++ code files?

• Populate table fields on query execution

  I'm trying to build an ASP site that populates a Table based on the results of a selection in a ListBox. In order to do this, I've created a GridView table inside a div element. Currently the default behavior is to show all the items in the specified table in sortable order. However, I'd like to refine this further to allow for display of matches based on the results from the ListBox selection, but am not sure how to execute this. • Converting string to a simple type

  .Net framework contains a great class named Convert that allows conversion between simple types, DateTime type and String type. Also the class support conversion of the types implementing IConvertible interface. The class has been implemented in the very first version of .Net framework. There were a few things in the first .Net framework that were not done quite right. For example .Parse methods on simple types would throw an exception if the string couldn't be parsed and there would be no way to check if exception is going to be thrown in advance. A future version of .Net Framework removed this deficiency by introducing the TryParse method that resolved this problem. The Convert class dates back to time of the old Parse method, so the ChangeType method on this class in implemented old style - if conversion can't be performed an exception is thrown. Take a look at the following code: public static T ConvertString<T>(string s, T @default) { try { return (T)Convert.ChangeType(s, typeof(T), CultureInfo.InvariantCulture); } catch (Exception) { return @default; } } This code basically does what I want. However I would pretty much like to avoid the ugly try/catch here. I'm sure, that similar to TryParse, there is a modern method of rewriting this code without the catch-all. Could you suggest one?

  Hi, In an iPhone application, I try to catch animation endings using setAnimationDidStopSelector. I try to suspend code execution until animation ends. I have tried this; set a global BOOL variable, set it to TRUE before commiting animation and after commiting animations waited using a while loop. In the setAnimationDidStopSelector, set the BOOL variable to FALSE and hope while loop to break. But unluckily this did not work, the code did not even fall into setAnimationDidStopSelector (I check that with some trace outputs). What do you suggest?

  I am trying to use Castle Windsor with MS Test. The test class only seems to use the default constructor. How do I configure Castle to resolve the service in the constructor? • Rails fixtures seem to be adding extra unexpected data

  Hello, all. I've got a dynamic fixture CSV file that's generating predictable data for a table in order for my unit tests to do their thing. It's working as expected and filling the table with the data, but when I check the table after the tests run, I'm seeing a number of additional rows of "blank" data (all zeros, etc). Those aren't being created by the fixture, and the unit tests are read-only, just doing selects, so I can't blame the code. There doesn't seem to be any logging done during the fixtures setup, so I can't see when the "blank" data is being inserted. Anyone ever run across this before, or have any ideas of how to log or otherwise see what the fixture setup is doing in order to trace down the source of the blank data?

• Programmatically change the icon of the executable

  I am developing an application called WeatherBar. Its main functionality is based on its interaction with the Windows 7 taskbar — it changes the icon depending on the weather conditions in a specific location. The icons I am using in the application are all stored in a compiled native resource file (.res) — I am using it instead of the embedded resource manifest for icons only. By default, I modify the Icon property of the main form to change the icons accordingly and it works fine, as long as the icon is not pinned to the taskbar. When it gets pinned, the icon in the taskbar automatically switches to the default one for the executable (with index 0 in the resource file). After doing a little bit of research, I figured that a way to change the icon would be changing the shortcut icon (as all pinned applications are actually shortcuts stored in the user folder). But it didn't work. I assume that I need to change the icon for the executable, and therefore use UpdateResource, but I am not entirely sure about this. My executable is not digitally signed, so it shouldn't be an issue modifying it. What would be the way to solve this issue?

• WPF: How do I bind a Control to a formula composed of several dependency properties?

  Hi all, I'm working on Expression Blend and I'm currently designing a custom control which has a Grid with 5 rows inside, and also has two Dependency properties: "Value", and "Maximum". Three of the rows have fixed height, and what I'm trying to do is set the remaining rows height to "Value/Maximum" and "1-Value/Maximum" respectively. How do I go and do that? When I set the height to "Value" it seems to react, but when I go and set it to "Value/Maximum" it stops working. I'm still a bit new around WPF, so there must be another way to achieve what I'm intending, but after searching I couln't find my problem elsewhere.   I have a ParameterView and ParameterViewModel, and I need the ParameterViewModel to have a reference to the Parameter view (more on that later). In the window I have a list of ParameterViewModels and in the ResourceDictionary I add the DataTemplate: <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type my:ParameterViewModel}" > <my:ParameterView HorizontalAlignment="Left"/> </DataTemplate> I then bind an ItemsControl.ItemSource to the List of ParameterViewModels The problem is: How can I pass the ParameterView to the ParameterViewModel in this scenario? The reason I need the ParameterView in the ParameterViewModel is the following: I have a TextBox whose Text property is binded to the PropertyModelView.Name property. But I want to display a default string when the Name is empty or Null. I've tried to set the property value to the default string I want when that happens but the TextBox.Text is not set in this scenario. I do something like this: private string _name; public string Name { get { return _name; } set { if (value == null || value.Length == 0) Name = _defaultName; else _name = value; } } I've also tried to specifically set the TextBox.Text binding mode to TwoWay without success. • A web application that uses someone else's mail server?

  I'm building a web application, call it http://mywebapp.com, where a user should be able to create a newsletter and email it to everyone in his user account's contact list. So he can check mark all his friends, select an html template, fill in the body content, and send. The only catch to this is that after the user sends the email, the recipient must NOT be allowed to trace the source of the email back to http://mywebapp.com. The reason for this condition is because the user is a "reseller" of my business who wants to appear as if he's an independent business. If liability issues arise due to the reseller's unduly usage, I do not want to be caught up in the legal issues. Hence, I do not want anything about my business or technology to be traceable back to me by newsletter recipients. What's the best way to achieve this?

• T4MVC Optional Parameter Inferred From Current Context

  I have read the other post about this at T4MVC OptionalParameter values implied from current context and I am using the latest T4MVC (2.11.1) which is suppose to have the fix in. I even checked checked to make sure that it's there -- and it is. I am still getting the optional parameters filled in based on the current context. For example: Let's say I have a list that is by default ordered by a person's last name. I have the option to order by first name instead with the URL http://localhost/list/stuff?orderby=firstname When I am in that page, I want to go back to order by first name with the code: @Html.ActionLink("order by last name", MVC.List.Stuff(null)) the link I wanted was simply http://localhost/list/stuff without any parameters to keep the URL simple and short - invoking default behaviors within the action. But instead the orderby is kept and the url is still http://localhost/list/stuff?orderby=firstname Any help would be great. I know that in the most general cases, this does remove the query parameter - maybe I do have a specific case where it was not removed. I find that it only happens when I have the URL inside a page that I included with RenderPartial. My actual code is <li>@Html.ActionLink("Recently Updated", MVC.Network.Ticket.List(Model.UI.AccountId, "LastModifiedDate", null, null, null, null, null))</li> <li>@Html.ActionLink("Recently Created", MVC.Network.Ticket.List(Model.UI.AccountId, "CreatedDate", null, null, null, null, null))</li> <li>@Html.ActionLink("Most Severe", MVC.Network.Ticket.List(Model.UI.AccountId, "MostSevere", null, null, null, null, null))</li> <li>@Html.ActionLink("Previously Closed", MVC.Network.Ticket.List(Model.UI.AccountId, "LastModifiedDate", null, "Closed", null, null, null))</li> the problem happens when someone clicks Previously Closed and and go to ?status=closed. When they click Recently Updated, which I want to the ?status so that it shows the active ones, the ?status=closed stays. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

• Session sometimes timesout too quick

  I am noticing session timeouts on my asp.net mvc web app randomly without browser being incative for for more than few minutes. My understanding is the default timeout should be 20mins. But sometimes I get a timeout in couple minutes or even less than that. For example after browsing on the site for a while I might get a session timeout when i refresh a page very soon after I enter the page. This is very random but I have seen this happen quite a few times now and I am not sure how I can trace this to see why I loose sessions every once in a while whithout browser being inactive long. I checked my web.config an no timeout value is defined there so I assume it should be 20mins. Hard to debug as this does not occur regularly..

• Complex sorting on MySQL database

  I'm facing the following situation. We've got an CMS with an entity with translations. These translations are stored in a different table with a one-to-many relationship. For example newsarticles and newsarticle_translations. The amount of available languages is dynamically determined by the same CMS. When entering a new newsarticle the editor is required to enter at least one translation, which one of the available languages he chooses is up to him. In the newsarticle overview in our CMS we would like to show a column with the (translated) article title, but since none of the languages are mandatory (one of them is mandatory but i don't know which one) i don't really know how to construct my mysql query to select a title for each newsarticle, regardless of the entered language. And to make it all a little harder, our manager asked for the possibilty to also be able to sort on title, so fetching the translations in a separate query is ruled out as far as i know. Anyone has an idea on how to solve this in the most efficient way? However, I've many flex applications on my page and the wrappers have not id attribute. I'm using a unique javascript function and passing it the parameters. How could I specify the "parent" html element in these parameters ? • Convert enumeration to string

  I am trying to build a function that converts an item from an enum to its corresponding string. The enums I use are fairly long, so I didn't want to use a switch-case. I found a method using boost::unordered_map very convenient, but I don't know how to make a default return (when there is no item matching the enum). const boost::unordered_map<enum_type, const std::string> enumToString = boost::assign::map_list_of (data_1, "data_1") (data_2, "data_2"); I tried to create an additional function: std::string convert(enum_type entry) { if (enumToString.find(entry)) // not sure what test to place here, return enumToString.at(entry); //because the find method returns an iter else return "invalid_value"; } I even tried something exceedingly wrong: std::string convert(enum_type entry) { try{ return enumToString.at(entry); } catch(...){ return "invalid_value"; } } Result: evil "Debug" runtime error. Can somebody give me a suggestion on how to either 1) find an easier method to convert enum to a string with the same name as the enum item 2) find a way to use already built boost methods to get a default value from a hash map (best option) 3) find what to place in the test to use a function that returns either the pair of the key-value, or a different string if the key is not found in the map.   I have an Ant script running a standard -task after taking in an inputed password: <input message="Password:" addproperty="password"> <handler classname="org.apache.tools.ant.input.SecureInputHandler" /> </input> <exec executable="/bin/sh" input="${password}" failonerror="true"> <arg line='-c "myScript.sh"' /> </exec> The script myScript.sh prompts the user for a password, and, it was my understanding that from the Ant documentation that input is supposed relay input into whatever the <exec> task is executing, but instead I get (for entering the password foobar) [exec] Failed to open /usr/local/foobar which is followed by a stack trace from my script complaining about an incorrect password...so obviously I've understood the documentation wrong. Does anybody know how to handle prompted input from external scripts in Ant?

• I have a ConnectException that isn't being caught for some reason

  I'm working on an Android application that uses sockets. I have a function called initializeStreams() which opens the socket and attempts a connection. This function throws a ConnectException if the connection could not be established. But for some reason, in the code that calls initializeStreams(), which has a catch block for ConnectException, the log prints out its own stack trace for the exception instead of going to the catch block. The catch block is never reached at all, even though the exact exception is being thrown. • Do you bother to write a pretty error page?

  So, everyone is really used to the errors that PHP gives you. They look kind of like this: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2 bytes) in /path/to/file(437) on line 21 My question is, do you put in the time to make your error pages more useful? I find that I am able to debug a lot faster using my own error page: I find this to be a lot better than the PHP errors because it gives me a stack trace, the usual error message, along with the actual location of the error, and more. Also, are there any downsides from creating your own development error pages. Obviously you wouldn't want to have a user see this page, but what about during development?

• Monitoring file upload progress in Actionscript 3

  I'm trying to track the progress of a file upload in AS3, and I'm getting strange behavior. When I select a file and upload it, the progress is instantaneously 100% even if the file is 10 or more megabytes, but it's not finished. The onComplete event is fired about 30 second to a few minutes later (depending on file size) when the file has really finished uploading.
