  • VNC connection via SSH proxy machine

    I would like to make a VNC connection from home to a Windows machine at work. The Windows machine is not accessible from the outside, but there is a Linux box that does have port 22 open, so it would seem that this can be done. I suspect it's just a command that "forwards" connections to port 22 on the Linux machine to the Windows machine? Just can't find an example that does exactly this though Thanks in advance!

  • Handling emails on a web server - Making sure the FQDN is set correctly based on the website sending the email

    I have a Windows 2008 Web Edition server hosting multiple websites using IIS 7.5. At the moment, all the emails are sent via the IIS6 SMTP service. The FQDN of the SMTP service is set to the computer name at the moment which isn't correct as it doesn't resolve to a valid DNS entry and is not RFC compliant. Some questions: Is there any way I can change the FQDN of the SMTP service based on the site sending the email? Would it be Ok to just setup mailserver.mydomain.com and use that as the FQDN for all the sites on multiple domains. Should I be using some other mail server software to handle this better? The reason I am asking is lots of emails are hitting spam folders because the settings are incorrect. I have access to the code that is running the websites so if something needs to be done there then that shouldn't be a problem. The sites are written using ASP.NET 2.0. EDIT: I have just found an option to create an SMTP virtual service. Would this be the way forward? Create a virtual server for each site? Thanks.

  • Trying to setup virtual hosts on unix PHP on nginx

    I have tried to install php5-fpm and Nginx on Ubuntu machine, but I got a problem. When I have only one virtual host on a unix port it is all fine but when I try to add another virtual host Nginx goes to default web page "Welcome to Nginx!" but when I run it on a tcp port example port 9000 it work fine with multisites. It is a fresh install of ubuntu 11.10, Nginx 1.2.3 with php5-fpm installed. It also has extra php installs such as php-apc. I can only give the links to the virtual hosts because I am doing it from a mobile phone.   • Inbound connections to a ubuntu machine running a VPN

    Is it possible to open inbound connections to a machine connected to a VPN server? The machine is running ubuntu 9.10 with two network devices(a wireless card and ethernet port), I can connect to my machine locally using a local ip but when I try port forward using my router I can't connect from my external ip. Is there a way around this? I figure with 2 network devices I can vpn over one and use the other for inbound connections but I can't figure out how to do this. Thanks

  • Windows module installer delaying login, server 2008 R2

    We updated our servers this weekend (windows updates), everything went fine except one of our terminal servers now hangs at login with the message, "waiting for windows modules installer." It eventually times out and leaves an event log message that the service has stopped unexpectedly. I have disabled the service and users can now login in a reasonable time frame. However we will need to re-enable the service in order to install further updates. I'm not sure where to start with this one, I'm an entry level admin and my colleagues are on vacation today, thank God this isn't a serious problem. Further details: -It affects all users. -The only third party software on the server is our ERP software and screwdrivers from Tricerat. -The only event log message is that the service has stopped unexpectedly. -The server manager screen does not display any information about roles it just says, "error". -The remote desktop roles all seem to be functioning properly, Remote app works as well as standard RDP. Let me know if there is any further details I can provide, I will be checking this frequently throughout the day.

  • Apache with multiple domains, single IP, VirtualHost is catching the wrong traffic

    I have a SOAP web service I am providing on a apache web server. There are 6 different clients (IPs) that request data and 3 of them are hitting the wrong domain. I am trying to find a way to log which domain name the requests are coming from. Details: ServerA is the primary ServerB is the backup domain1.com - the domain the web service is on domain2.com - a seperate domain that server seperate content on ServerB ServerA is standalone for now with its own IP and DNS from domain1.com. This works for everyone. ServerB is a backup for the web service, but it already hosts domain2.com. I added entries into the apache configuration file like: <VirtualHost *:443> ServerName domain2.com DocumentRoot /var/www/html/ CustomLog logs/access_log_domain2443 common ErrorLog logs/ssl_error_log_domain2443 LogLevel debug SSLEngine on ... etc SSL directives ... </VirtualHost> I have these for both 80 and 443 for domain1 and domain2 with domain1 being second. The problem is when we switch DNS for domain1 from ServerA to ServerB, 3 out of the 6 clients show up in the debug logs as hitting domain2.com instead of domain1.com and fail their web service request because domain2.com is first in the apache configuration file and catching all requests that don't match other virtualhosts, namely domain1.com. I don't know if they are hitting www.domain1.com, domain1.com (although I added entries for both) or using the external IP address or something else. Is there a way to see which URL they are hitting not just the page request or someother way to see why the first domain is catching traffic meant for the second listed domain? In the meantime, I've put domain1.com higher in the apache configuration than domain2.com. Now it catches the requests for all clients and works, however I don't know what it is catching and would like to make domain2.com the first entry again with a correct entry for domain1.com, for however they are hitting it.   • Caching issue with Centos forwarding DNS server

    I installed a Forwarding DNS server on Centos 5.10 and it is resolving addresses e.g google.com. When I stopped named (service named stop) and tried to dig (dig @localhost A google.com) there was a failure to resolve the address. I checked and see the caching daemon nscd is running. Does this mean the server is not caching at all?     I want to put a web application on my Linux server: I will first explain to you what the web app will do and then I will tell you what I did so far to secure my brand new Linux system. The app will be a classified ads website (like gumtree.co.uk) where users can sell their items, upload images, send to and receive emails from the admin. It will use SSL for some pages. I will need SSH. So far, what I did to secure my stock Ubuntu (latest version) is the following: NOTE: I probably did some things that will prevent the application from doing all its tasks, so please let me know of that. My machine's sole purpose will be hosting the website. (I put numbers as bullet points so you can refer to them more easily) 1) Firewall I installed Uncomplicated Firewall. Deny IN & OUT by default Rules: Allow IN & OUT: HTTP, IMAP, POP3, SMTP, SSH, UDP port 53 (DNS), UDP port 123 (SNTP), SSL, port 443 (the ones I didn't allow were FTP, NFS, Samba, VNC, CUPS) When I install MySQL & Apache, I will open up Port 3306 IN & OUT. 2) Secure the partition in /etc/fstab, I added the following line at the end: tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults,rw 0 0 Then in console: mount -o remount /dev/shm 3) Secure the kernel In the file /etc/sysctl.conf, there are a few different filters to uncomment. I didn't know which one was relevant to web app hosting. Which one should I activate? They are the following: A) Turn on Source Address Verification in all interfaces to prevent spoofing attacks B) Uncomment the next line to enable packet forwarding for IPv4 C) Uncomment the next line to enable packet forwarding for IPv6 D) Do no accept ICMP redirects (we are not a router) E) Accept ICMP redirects only for gateways listed in our default gateway list F) Do not send ICMP redirects G) Do not accept IP source route packets (we are not a router) H) Log Martian Packets 4) Configure the passwd file Replace "sh" by "false" for all accounts except user account and root. I also did it for the account called sshd. I am not sure whether it will prevent SSH connection (which I want to use) or if it's something else. 5) Configure the shadow file In the console: passwd -l to lock all accounts except user account. 6) Install rkhunter and chkrootkit 7) Install Bum Disabled those services: "High performance mail server", "unreadable (kerneloops)","unreadable (speech-dispatcher)","Restores DNS" (should this one stay on?) 8) Install Apparmor_profiles 9) Install clamav & freshclam (antivirus and update) What did I do wrong and what should I do more to secure this Linux machine?     Okay, so this may be incredible stupied But I was configuring my httpd.conf file yesterday. After a server restart, I can no longer access it. Port 80 is working fine, and it displays my webpages, however when I access the site via ssh, it just says the connection was refused. I cannot access webmin which is port 10000 or access it via ftp :/ Do I need to recreate the whole site or is there a way to get into it?

    At work there is a proxy that (understandably) blocks all ports except web ones. However, during lunch hours you are allowed to play online games. But as ports are blocked, multiplayer games are out of the question. So I was wondering, could I set up a tunnel on a web port, that would then allow me to access those blocked ports, through the port 80 tunnel whilst still being behind the work proxy? This is in a Windows environment.
