  • Flex 4 vs JavaScript Options (Cappuccino, JQuery, etc.)

    Rehashing an older post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1570070/jquery-vs-flex-choosing-a-platform-for-saas We are preparing to develop an application that is exceptionally dynamic and interactive. It's particularly heavy on the graphics side. We are 85% convinced that Adobe Flash built atop Flex is the right path to take, however Cappuccino is quite nice and seems as though it may be able to nearly fit the bill. The only pause we have right now is portability for the iPhone. With the lack of blessings from Apple we will most certainly have to create a 2nd interface for the iPhone for the site, however... Having two interfaces may not be bad as it will likely have to be custom anyway to take advantage of the differences that it affords. Any further thoughts or reevaluations of points enumerated in the noted article? Further, Flex 4 adds a lot of strength to the position mentioned previously regarding UI development. Fx4 is very nice vs Fx3 and shaves 90% from the development time when coupled with Flash Catalyst, which is not really always fully appropriate, but with some round trip tricks it seems as though it can cut through things rather well... Please do advise and many thanks.

    Let's say I have 2 interfaces defined like so: public interface ISkuItem { public string SKU { get; set; } } public interface ICartItem : ISkuItem { public int Quantity { get; set; } public bool IsDiscountable { get; set; } } When I go to implement the interface in C#, VS produces the following templated code: public class CartItem : ICartItem { #region ICartItem Members public int Quantity { get {...} set {...} } public bool IsDiscountable { get {...} set {...} } #endregion #region ISkuItem Members public string SKU { get {...} set {...} } #endregion } In VB.NET, the same class is built out like so: Public Class CartItem Implements ICartItem Public Property IsDiscountable As Boolean Implements ICartItem.IsDiscountable 'GET SET' End Property Public Property Quantity As Integer Implements ICartItem.Quantity 'GET SET' End Property Public Property SKU As String Implements ISkuItem.SKU 'GET SET' End Property End Class VB.NET explicitly requires you to add Implements IInterfaceName.PropertyName after each property that gets implemented whereas C# simply uses regions to indicate which properties and methods belong to the interface. Interestingly in VB.NET, on the SKU property, I can specify either Implements ISkuItem.SKU or Implements ICartItem.SKU. Although the template built by VS defaults to ISkuItem, I can also specify ICartItem if I want. Oddly, because C# only uses regions to block out inherited properties, it seems that I can't explicitly specify the implementing interface of SKU in C# like I can in VB.NET. My question is: Is there any importance behind being able to specify one interface or another to implement properites in VB.NET, and if so, is there a way to mimic this functionality in C#?

  • Images in database vs file system

    We have a project coming up where we will be building a whole backend CMS system that will power our entire extranet and intranet with one package. The question I have been trying to find an answer to is which is better: storing images in the database (SQL Server 2005) so we may have integrity, single replication plan, etc OR storing on the file system? One issue we have is that we have multiple servers load balanced that require to have the same data at all times. As of now we have SQL replication taking care of that but file replication seems to be a little tougher. Another concern we have is that we would like to have multiple resolutions of the same image, we are not sure if creating and storing each version on the file system would be best or maybe dynamically pulling and creating the resolution image we would like upon request. Our concerns are the with the following: Data integrity Data replication Multiple resolutions Speed of database vs file system Overhead load of database vs file system Data management and backup Does anyone have a similar situation or have any input on what would be recommended?   • Performance of VIEW vs. SQL statement

    I have a query that goes something like the following: select <field list> from <table list> where <join conditions> and <condition list> and PrimaryKey in (select PrimaryKey from <table list> where <join list> and <condition list>) and PrimaryKey not in (select PrimaryKey from <table list> where <join list> and <condition list>) The sub-select queries both have multiple sub-select queries of their own that I'm not showing so as not to clutter the statement. One of the developers on my team thinks a view would be better. I disagree in that the SQL statement uses variables passed in by the program (based on the user's login Id). Are there any hard and fast rules on when a view should be used vs. using a SQL statement? What kind of performance gain issues are there in running SQL statements on their own against regular tables vs. against views. (Note that all the joins / where conditions are against indexed columns, so that shouldn't be an issue.) EDIT for clarification...   • Productivity features in VS, how to display documentation

    I used to program quite a lot in Java, recently I've began to work with C#. I think that most of advantages of C# (comparing to Java) are corrupted by VS. Now what really makes me crazy is intelisence. It offers only list of classes of that are already in "using". I would like to see suggestions of all classes from all libraries. Then, when I finally remember the name of class I want to use and type it manually I have to confirm "using"(by clicking pop-up(!)). This is cost me some time and makes me nervous. Most important of all then I'm choosing between methods or classes, filling parameters of methods etc. I need to see documentation of those classes, methods etc. VS displays just a small tool tip that is contains only summary what is completely unsatisfactory. It does not even contain methods return type(!) and parameters. Resharper does not solve any of these. Its suggestions are also mostly useless(it suggest actions I don't want to do). As well I'd like to see Resharper's sugestion not only when I'm on the line in task. Can somebody suggest a solution ? Maybe some addon, how to change it in settings or alike? Other productivity features or a way how to "generally" set shortcuts to be the same as in Java would be also appreciated.

  • Flex vs GWT again

    Hi all, I am working on a customized web ontology editor (something like http://webprotege.stanford.edu/ which is built by GWT). My backend will be Java+Spring+Hibernate and domain models are in Java. My frontend will be something like WebProtege which requires extensive RPC call. It is quite clear that I should use GWT as I can refer to the open source code. However, due to company policy, I shall consider Flex as well. I understand Flex can remotely invoke Java backend methods via BlazeDS using AMF (Is there a Flex equivalent of GWT-RPC?). I have read discussion on GWT vs Flex vs ?. If I can make full decision sure I will go with GWT. GWT strengths like support right to left characters, support iPhone/iPad, smaller size, support JSON out of the box, support printing are not important considerations for my project. Besides GWT supports Java generic, enum; domain objects can be shared with both GWT client and server; coding are more seamlessly... anyone can suggest other strong reasons that I should only go with GWT? FYI, I have plenty of Java experience but both GWT and Flex are new to me. Thanks.

  • Was Visual Studio 2008 or 2010 written to use multi cores?

    basically i want to know if the visual studio IDE and/or compiler in 2010 was written to make use of a multi core environment (i understand we can target multi core environments in 08 and 10, but that is not my question). i am trying to decide on if i should get a higher clock dual core or a lower clock quad core, as i want to try and figure out which processor will give me the absolute best possible experience with Visual Studio 2010 (ide and background compiler). if they are running the most important section (background compiler and other ide tasks) in one core, then the core will get cut off quicker if running a quad core, esp if background compiler is the heaviest task, i would imagine this would b e difficult to seperate in more then one process, so even if it uses multi cores you might still be better off with going for a higher clock cpu if the majority of the processing is still bound to occur in one core (ie the most significant part of the VS environment). i am a vb programmer, they've made great performance improvements in beta 2, congrats, but i would love to be able to use VS seamlessly... anyone have any ideas? thanks, erx

  • Pinning Projects and Solutions with Visual Studio 2010

    This is the twenty-fourth in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the VS 2010 and .NET 4 release. Today’s blog post covers a very small, but still useful, feature of VS 2010 – the ability to “pin” projects and solutions to both the Windows 7 taskbar as well VS 2010 Start Page.  This makes it easier to quickly find and open projects in the IDE. [In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] VS 2010 Jump List on Windows 7 Taskbar Windows 7 added support for customizing the taskbar at the bottom of your screen.  You can “pin” and re-arrange your application icons on it however you want. Most developers using Visual Studio 2010 on Windows 7 probably already know that they can “pin” the Visual Studio icon to the Windows 7 taskbar – making it always present.  What you might not yet have discovered, though, is that Visual Studio 2010 also exposes a Taskbar “jump list” that you can use to quickly find and load your most recently used projects as well. To activate this, simply right-click on the VS 2010 icon in the task bar and you’ll see a list of your most recent projects.  Clicking one will load it within Visual Studio 2010: Pinning Projects on the VS 2010 Jump List with Windows 7 One nice feature also supported by VS 2010 is the ability to optionally “pin” projects to the jump-list as well – which makes them always listed at the top.  To enable this, simply hover over the project you want to pin and then click the “pin” icon that appears on the right of it: When you click the pin the project will be added to a new “Pinned” list at the top of the jumplist: This enables you to always display your own list of projects at the top of the list.  You can optionally click and drag them to display in any order you want. VS 2010 Start Page and Project Pinning VS 2010 has a new “start page” that displays by default each time you launch a new instance of Visual Studio.  In addition to displaying learning and help resources, it also includes a “Recent Projects” section that you can use to quickly load previous projects that you have recently worked on: The “Recent Projects” section of the start page also supports the concept of “pinning” a link to projects you want to always keep in the list – regardless of how recently they’ve been accessed. To “pin” a project to the list you simply select the “pin” icon that appears when you hover over an item within the list: Once you’ve pinned a project to the start page list it will always show up in it (at least until you “unpin” it). Summary This project pinning support is a small but nice usability improvement with VS 2010 and can make it easier to quickly find and load projects/solutions.  If you work with a lot of projects at the same time it offers a nice shortcut to load them.   • VS.NET 2010 SP1, Win 7, Parallels, and a MBP&ndash;Hell, my friends&hellip;HELL!

    LightSwitch Beta 2 is out. That’s how all this started. All I wanted was to install it on my MBP’s Win7 Parallels VM. But as I’m finding with running a Win7 VM on a MBP, nothing is as easy as it should be. First my MBP froze during the SP1 installation. Not my VM crashing, the entire machine freezing…no mouse, nothing. Had to do a hard reset. BLECH. Then we’re back and I try to re-install SP1 (since the first try obviously failed). I get met with a dialog asking me where silverlight_sdk.msi was. It was *nowhere*! So I hit the net and download it from Microsoft’s site. Unfortunately, it only downloads an exe and not the individual files which would include the msi. Here’s what I did: - Download the tools for Silverlight 4 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=b3deb194-ca86-4fb6-a716-b67c2604a139&displaylang=en) - Run it, but don’t hit the install or next button when the dialog comes up - Look in your file structure for a folder with a weird name…bunch of numbers and letters. This is a temp folder that the exe creates and dumps all the necessary setup files into, and clears away after its done. - Inside this folder you’ll find the silverlight_sdk.msi (hooray!). Just copy it to a different location on the C drive. You can then cancel installation. Ok, so that takes care of that…but then running the SP1 installer I get hit with *another* dialog asking for the WCF RIA Services SP1 msi. Now it looks like this MSI is part of the Silverlight Tools package because you’ll see the MSI, but the VS.NET 2010 SP1 installer will thumb its nose at this unworthy msi…for whatever reason. So instead, go here: http://www.silverlight.net/getstarted/riaservices/ …and click on the “Install WCF Ria Services Sp1…” option. This downloads the msi, which you should save to your C drive and direct the VS.NET 2010 SP1 installer to. Then, if you’ve done all that, been good all year, and not made any little children cry, you *might* just be able to install VS.NET 2010 SP1 on your Parallels VM. If you were playing that “Take a shot every time he writes VS.NET 2010 Sp1” drinking game, then you’re drunk…which is a better place to be than where I am right now: watching the installation progress bar slowly creep to completion, hoping there’s no more surprises in store.   • How can I make eclipse look like VS.NET 2010?

    I am constantly switching between a project written in C# 4.0 and another one written in Java. I find it very difficult to read the code in Java, and I think it's because of its colors (or lack of them really) Is there any way to mimic the colors that VS.NET 2010 has inside eclipse? (even better would be to replace all its hotkeys for their equivalent in VS.NET, like ctrl+k for ctrl+f3, but I believe it would be utopic)

    I have a game world where the objects are in a grid based environment with the following restrictions. All of the triangles are 45-90-45 triangles that are unit length. They can only rotate 90°. The squares are of unit length and can not rotate (not that it matters) I have the Square vs Square detection down and it is very very solid and very fast (max vs min on x and y values) Wondering if there are any tricks I can employ since I have these restrictions on the triangles?

  • Ubuntu Raring on iMac 2008; graphics update ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro broke my Raring this morning!

    Was working on my iMac(2008) 20,5" this morning when again some GLX etc updates appeared! As usual I let the update-installer do it's job; when finished updating, my screen got scrambled; I can not work anymore as the screen shivers, shakes and graphics is one big mess. Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not work either as most of the time my screen is black completely! When booting into OSX 10.8.5 (Raring dual boot with OSX 10.8.5), OSX graphics works flawlessly! Can anybody indicate me which ATI Radeon drivers I can download which repairs the 'malversation' of this mornings updates? I guess I will have to startup with some rescue boot disk (Knoppix?) to do manipulations… As I'm still a noob as well I need clear explanations (please). Raring worked perfectly in dual boot on my iMac until this mornings updates! Needles to say the 'final resort' is restarting (re)installation of Ubuntu Raring, but want to attempt to rescue my present 13.04. Thank you! Kind regards, Gaytan!

  • Where is the documentation for MSBUILD arguments to run MSDEPLOY?

    There is an excellent PDC talk available here which describes the new MSDEPLOY features in Visual Studio 2010 - as well as how to deploy an application within TFS. The talk explains some of the command line parameters such as : /p:DeployOnBuild /p:DeployTarget=MsDeployPublish /p:CreatePackageOnPublish=True /p:MSDeployPublishMethod=InProc /p:MSDeployServiceURL=localhost /p:DeployIISAppApth="Default Web Site" But where is the documentation for this - explaining how they work and what i should use? Most of these turn up very few or zero results when searching. Isn't there some actual documentation for these parameters somewhere? I'd rather use these to deploy than try to add a command line exec command to run the package. I've managed to create a web deployment package, which TFS is copying to the output. But I'm ending up with all kinds of errors trying to actually deploy the package. Currently in my build configuration in TFS I have the following arguments for MSBuild Arguments /p:DeployOnBuild=True /p:DeployTarget=MsDeployPublish /p:Configuration=Release /p:CreatePackageOnPublish=True /p:DeployIisAppPath=staging.example.com /p:MsDeployServiceUrl=localhost This however gives me this error : Is there any actual real documentation for these arguments? It would probably take me about 5 minutes to get it running the package by the command line, but i want to get them deploying like this because it will simplify multiple configurations later.

Yes I do have the Web Deployment Agent Service running. I also have the management service running under IIS. I've tried using both.     Given a type name, is it possible to use DTE to find the ProjectItem that the type is located in? Something similar to how the Navigate To... dialog works in Visual Studio 2010. The closest I could find is Solution.FindProjectItem, but that takes in a file name. Thanks!

  • Error displaying a WinForm in Design mode with a custom control on it.

    I have a UserControl that is part of a Class library. I reference this project from my solution. This adds a control from the referenced project to my toolbox. I add tghe control to a form. Everything looks good, I compile all and run. Perfect... But when I close the .frm with the control on it and re-open it, I get this error. The code continues to run. It may have something to do with namespaces. The original namespace was simply "Design" and this was ambiguous and conflicting so i decided to rename it. I think that's when my problems began.     I noticed that List<T> defines its enumerator as a struct, while ArrayList defines its enumerator as a class. What's the difference? If I am to write an enumerator for my class, which one would be preferable? EDIT: My requirements cannot be fulfilled using yield, so I'm implementing an enumerator of my own. That said, I wonder whether it would be better to follow the lines of List<T> and implement it as a struct.

    When I save a file in Visual Studio 2005, I'd like to have a macro also run that updates a copyright (through a regular expression search and replace). I'm not new to regular expressions, but I am new to VB/VBA and Visual Studio macros, so what I need help with specifically is: getting a macro to run upon save, preferably after I press CTRL-S but before it actually writes the file so that the results of the search and replace are actually saved without having to save twice calling search and replace for a regular expression from inside the VB/VBA macro Thanks, Mark

    I'd like to have a macro in Visual Studio 2005 that calls a DOS command and redirects the output (stdout and stderr) to a file. Just calling the command and "" redirecting it will not capture stderr, so there are two parts to this: calling a DOS command capturing both stderr and stdout to a file during that call I'd then like to open this file in Visual Studio after the command completes. I'm new to Visual Studio 2005 macro writing, and VB/VBA, so that's the kind of help that I'm looking for. Thanks, Mark

Some of the properties I wish to set do expose a programmatic interface to 'default', but many others do not. Is there a generic way to set such properties to their default?
