• Access functions from user control without events?

  I have an application made with usercontrols and a function on main form that removes the previous user controls and shows the desired usercontrol centered and tweaked: public void DisplayControl(UserControl uControl) I find it much easier to make this function static or access this function by reference from the user control, like this: MainForm mainform_functions = (MainForm)Parent; mainform_functions.DisplayControl(uc_a); You probably think it's a sin to access a function in mainform, from the usercontrol, however, raising an event seems much more complex in such case - I'll give a simple example - let's say I raise an event from usercontrol_A to show usercontrol_B on mainform, so I write this: uc_a.show_uc_b+= (s,e) => { usercontrol_B uc_b = new usercontrol_B(); DisplayControl(uc_b); }; Now what if I want usercontrol_B to also have an event to show usercontrol_C? now it would look like this: uc_a.show_uc_b+= (s,e) => { usercontrol_B uc_b = new usercontrol_B(); DisplayControl(uc_b); uc_b.show_uc_c += (s2,e2) => {usercontrol_C uc_c = new usercontrol_C(); DisplayControl(uc_c);} }; THIS LOOKS AWFUL! The code is much simpler and readable when you actually access the function from the usercontrol itself, therefore I came to the conclusion that in such case it's not so terrible if I break the rules and not use events for such general function, I also think that a readable usercontrol that you need to make small adjustments for another app is preferable than a 100% 'generic' one which makes my code look like a pile of mud. What is your opinion? Am I mistaken?

• Multilingual Publishing Pack (MLP): make a link to the corresponding page in the another language?

  I am helping to build a bilingual website using MLP on TextPattern. It's trivial to put a link to the top level page of another language, but how to put a link to the current page in another language? Eg. /en/contact should link to /de/kontakt (the same article in another language). I'm sure there are some variables somewhere that I could put into the template that would be filled with the correct links.

• Pending and Approval process

  So let's say I have a DB table with 8 columns, one is a unique auto-incrementing used as ID. So I have a page that pulls in the info for each row based on query string ID. I want to give my users the ability to propose changes. Kinda like a wiki setup. So I was thinking I should just have another duplicate table or maybe database altogether (without the auto-incrementing column and maybe with a date edited column) that keeps all proposed changes in queue and then when I approve them, the script can move the row from the proposed DB to the real DB. Does this sound good or is there a better process for this?

• Windows service - COM class factory error 80070583

  I have a Windows service that periodically scrapes some web pages, using mshtml and HtmlAgilityPack. For this particular C# code snippet: HTMLDocumentClass doc = new HTMLDocumentClass(); doc.write(new object[] { responseFromServer }); doc.close(); I get this error: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {25336920-03F9-11CF-8FD0-00AA00686F13} failed due to the following error: 80070583. I tracked down the CLSID in the registry, and it turned out to be mshtml.dll. I also noticed that the version I actually have is version 7.0.6000.17023, and the registry version is listed as Version=7.0.3300.0. The error code 80070583 means "Class does not exist"; interestingly, I've also gotten an error from the same program with error code 80070582, or "Class already exists". What does it all mean? Edit: Since there are no answers, I ended up working around the problem, by ditching MSHTML and using HTML Agility Pack to parse HTML. How do I close this question?

  Hi, So we are running a web application that has been tested on Tomcat, Glassfish, WebLogic and WebSphere. All run correctly except WebSphere. The issue is that filters are not processed for files under a certain directory. • Class Structure w/ LINQ, Partial Classes, and Abstract Classes

  I am following the Nerd Dinner tutorial as I'm learning ASP.NET MVC, and I am currently on Step 3: Building the Model. One part of this section discusses how to integrate validation and business rule logic with the model classes. All this makes perfect sense. However, in the case of this source code, the author only validates one class: Dinner. What I am wondering is, say I have multiple classes that need validation (Dinner, Guest, etc). It doesn't seem smart to me to repeatedly write these two methods in the partial class: public bool IsValid { get { return (GetRuleViolations().Count() == 0); } } partial void OnValidate(ChangeAction action) { if (!IsValid) { throw new ApplicationException("Rule violations prevent saving."); } } What I'm wondering is, can you create an abstract class (because "GetRuleViolations" needs to be implemented separately) and extend a partial class? I'm thinking something like this (based on his example): public partial class Dinner : Validation { public IEnumerable<RuleViolation> GetRuleViolations() { yield break; } } This doesn't "feel" right, but I wanted to check with SO to get opinions of individuals smarter than me on this. I also tested it out, and it seems that the partial keyword on the OnValidate method is causing problems (understandably so). This doesn't seem possible to fix (but I could very well be wrong).   I need to use inheritance with EF4 and the TPH model created from DB. I created a new projet to test simples classes. There is my class model: There is my table in SQL SERVER 2008 : VEHICLE ID : int PK Owner : varchar(50) Consumption : float FirstCirculationDate : date Type : varchar(50) Discriminator : varchar(10) I added a condition in my EDMX on the Discriminator field to differentiate the Scooter, Car, Motorbike and Bike entities. MotorizedVehicle and Vehicle are Abstract. But when I compile, this error appears : Error 3032: Problem in mapping fragments starting at lines 78, 85:EntityTypes EF4InheritanceModel.Scooter, EF4InheritanceModel.Motorbike, EF4InheritanceModel.Car, EF4InheritanceModel.Bike are being mapped to the same rows in table Vehicle. Mapping conditions can be used to distinguish the rows that these types are mapped to. Edit : To Ladislav : I try it and error change to become it for all of my entities : Error 3034: Problem in mapping fragments starting at lines 72, 86:An entity is mapped to different rows within the same table. Ensure these two mapping fragments do not map two groups of entities with overlapping keys to two distinct groups of rows. • Extract a pattern from the output of curl

  I would like to use curl, on the command line, to grab a url, pipe it to a pattern, and return a list of urls that match that pattern. I am running into problems with greedy aspects of the pattern, and can not seem to get past it. Any help on this would be apprecaited. curl http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/ | grep -ioE "http://imgur\.com/.+(jpg|jpeg|gif|png)" So, grab the data from the url, which returns a mess of html, which may need some linebreaks somehow replaced in, onless the regex can return more than one pattern in a single line. The patter is pretty simple, any string that matches... starts with http://imgur.com/ has A-Z a-z 0-9 (maybe some others) and is so far, 5 chars long, 8 should cover it forever if I wanted to limit that aspect of the patter, which I don't ends in a .grraphic_file_format_extention (jpg, jpeg, gif, png) Thats about it, at that url, with default settings, I should generally get back a good set of images. I would not be objectionable to using the RSS feel url for the same page, it may be easier to parse actually. Thanks everyone!

• Saving Abstract and Sub classes to database

  Hi, I have an abstract class "StrategyBase", and a set of sub classes, StrategyA/B/C etc. The sub classes use some of the properties of the base class, and have some individual properties. My question is how to save this to a database. I'm currently using SqlCE, and Linq-To-Sql by creating entity classes automatically with SqlMetal.exe. I've seen there are three solutions shown in this question, but I'm not able to see how these solutions will work or not with SqlMetal/entity classes. Though it seems to me the "concrete table inheritance" would probably work without any manual modifying. What about the other two, would they be problematic? For "Single Table Inheritance" wouldn't all classes get all variables, even though they don't need them? And for the "Class table inheritance" solution I can't really see at all how that will map into the entity-classes for a useful purpose. I may note that I extend these partial entity classes for making the classes of my business objects. I may also consider moving to EntityFramework instead of SqlMetal/Linq2Sql, so would be nice also to know if that makes any difference to what schema is easy to implement. One likely important thing to note is that I will constantly be develop new strategies, which makes me have to modify the program code, and probably the database shcema; when adding a new strategy. Sorry the question is a bit "all over the place", but hopefully it's some clear advantages/disadvantages here that you may be able to advice. ? Cheers!

• NotApplicable marker with display pattern

  Ok, so I'm pretty new to Cocoa, especially Bindings, but here's what I'm trying to do. I've got a Core Data model consisting of two entities: Category and Item. Category has a to-many relationship to Item called children, and Item has a relationship to Category called parent. Item has two attributes that Category does not have: quantity and desiredQuantity. What I'd like to do is display the tree in an NSOutlineView with two columns. One column is bound to the name of either the Category or the Item. I want to the second column to display something along the lines of 2 of 5 for the Item rows and nothing at all for the Category rows. When I use a display pattern, the Category rows end up showing of I noticed that if I don't use a display pattern for the second column, and instead just bind its Value to either the quantity or the desiredQuantity, the Category rows show nothing; its only if I try to use the display pattern. How can I make it display nothing for the Category rows and still use the display pattern? Or can I? Edit: I guess I didn't explain what the NotApplicable marker has to do with anything - Category does have properties for quantity and desiredQuantity, but they just return NSNotApplicableMarker.

• Initializing AngularJS service factory style

  I have a service that retrieves data via REST. I want to store the resulting data in service level variable for use in multiple controllers. When I put all the REST logic directly into controllers everything works fine but when I attempt to move the retrieval / storing of data into a service the controller is not being updated when the data comes back. I've tried lots of different ways of maintain the binding between service and controller. • Why should I abstract my data layer?

  OOP principles were difficult for me to grasp because for some reason I could never apply them to web development. As I developed more and more projects I started understanding how some parts of my code could use certain design patterns to make them easier to read, reuse, and maintain so I started to use it more and more. The one thing I still can't quite comprehend is why I should abstract my data layer. Basically if I need to print a list of items stored in my DB to the browser I do something along the lines of: $sql = 'SELECT * FROM table WHERE type = "type1"';' $result = mysql_query($sql); while($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) { echo '<li>'.$row['name'].'</li>'; } I'm reading all these How-Tos or articles preaching about the greatness of PDO but I don't understand why. I don't seem to be saving any LoCs and I don't see how it would be more reusable because all the functions that I call above just seem to be encapsulated in a class but do the exact same thing. The only advantage I'm seeing to PDO are prepared statements. I'm not saying data abstraction is a bad thing, I'm asking these questions because I'm trying to design my current classes correctly and they need to connect to a DB so I figured I'd do this the right way. Maybe I'm just reading bad articles on the subject :) I would really appreciate any advice, links, or concrete real-life examples on the subject!

• Efficient mass string search problem.

  The Problem: A large static list of strings is provided. A pattern string comprised of data and wildcard elements (* and ?). The idea is to return all the strings that match the pattern - simple enough. Current Solution: I'm currently using a linear approach of scanning the large list and globbing each entry against the pattern. My Question: Are there any suitable data structures that I can store the large list into such that the search's complexity is less than O(n)? Perhaps something akin to a suffix-trie? I've also considered using bi- and tri-grams in a hashtable, but the logic required in evaluating a match based on a merge of the list of words returned and the pattern is a nightmare, and I'm not convinced its the correct approach.

• C# - What should I do when every inherited class needs getter from base class, but setter only for O

  Hello, I have a abstract class called WizardViewModelBase. All my WizardXXXViewModel classes inherit from the base abstract class. The base has a property with a getter. Every sub class needs and overrides that string property as its the DisplayName of the ViewModel. Only ONE ViewModel called WizardTimeTableWeekViewModel needs a setter because I have to set wether the ViewModel is a timetable for week A or week B. Using 2 ViewModels like WizardTimeTableWeekAViewModel and WizardTimeTableWeekBViewModel would be redundant. I do not want to override the setter in all other classes as they do not need a setter. Can I somehow tell the sub class it needs not to override the setter? Or any other suggestion? With interfaces I would be free to use getter or setter but having many empty setter properties is not an option for me.

• Using fixtures with factory_girl

  When building the following factory: Factory.define :user do |f| f.sequence(:name) { |n| "foo#{n}" } f.resume_type_id { ResumeType.first.id } end ResumeType.first returns nil and I get an error. ResumeType records are loaded via fixtures. I checked using the console and the entries are there, the table is not empty. I've found a similar example in the factory_girl mailing list, and it's supposed to work. What am I missing? Do I have to somehow tell factory_girl to set up the fixtures before running the tests?
