• Computer always freezing after random periods of time. No errors listed.

  Hi, all. Here are my specs beforehand: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.00 GHz, 160GB IDE HDD, 128MB GeForce 6200 AGP, 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM, CoolMax 350W PSU, 1 x CD-RW Drive, 1 x DVD-ROM Drive, FIC AM37 Mobo, Windows XP Pro SP3 My desktop freezes after random periods of time but there are no errors listed in the Event Viewer after a forced shutdown and restart. A couple months ago, I found that when it froze, the floppy was being accessed at the same time. So, I disconnected the floppy (since I never used it anyways) from the power supply and motherboard. Everything was working fine and the computer never froze. This past Christmas break, I left for a Conference and when I got home, the computer kept freezing again. So, this time, I just disconnected the DVD reader (from mobo and power) and started it up. Still, it froze almost right away. Then I found some older sticks of RAM (2 x 256MB PC2100 DDR) and swapped them in. Everything worked fine again after that. I even swapped the 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM back in and everything worked okay. Then it started freezing again, and I tried all possible RAM combos, still freezing within 5-10 minutes of startup. One thing I've realized is that the floppy drive is still listed in My Computer and I uninstalled it from my Device Manager already. There were no software errors, and I uninstalled the most recent software, with no effect. Still, I have no idea what is wrong because everything ran fine before that. Any suggestions? EDIT: Still have yet to buy some blank CD media to use Memtest86+. However, would a lack of virtual memory cause the computer to freeze? EDIT2: So after a long time, I ran Memtest86+ and all is well. Turns out though, after removing my original DVD reader and replacing it with a DVD-ROM drive, there is no freezing whatsoever! Thanks for all your suggestions!

• Windows 7 64 bit Installation freezes after a while durig the setup

  I have a windows 7 32 bits on my computer. Because i have 5 gb of ram (kingston) on my asus M2N motherboard and only 3 were able to be used, I bought W7 x64 and install it. It loads the wizard, but after a while, it freezes, and I have to force reboot. It first crashed while unzipping w7 files, but if I wait a while on the terms page for example, it can crash before, which make me think that it is a matter of time. I remember I had the same issue while booting on Ubuntu x64, it crashed randomly but not load completely. No bip or other messages. Configuration: Software OS (before) W7 x86 Pro New OS : W7 x64 Pro Antivirus : avast (bios verification ?) BIOS 03/27/2008 - v08.00.12 Hardware : Motherboard : Asus M2N Processor : AMD Athlon 64 dualcore @ 2.6 GHZ Memory : 5120 MB ((2 + 2) + (1)) NOTES : I ran a memory test using openSUSE cd, though i have not finished it, it ran. • Windows 8 using as a webserver

  I have a few hobby websites that I currently host on CentOS 6. Apache, mail serving, PHP, MySQL nothing special. In the past I used Windows XP to do this same task, for years, and I was OK. I switched to Linux and for the last few years it has been such a pain. updates break, certain apps only support certain distros without compiling from source. It prevents me from working on my hobby sites more because I am always fixing something. With Windows I locked it down, I run a hardware firewall and packet analyser, kept up on updates and A/V and never had a problem. I dont allow RDC from outside the local LAN, no FTP open, run OpenSSH on an obscure port.. I am considering switching to Windows 8 (since it is a cheaper license now that Windows 7) and running apache, HMailServer, PHP, MySQL, just like my CentOS install. My questions: I am not familiar with Windows 8, can the above be done like XP? No new security restrictions or the OS preventing this from happening? The machine is a Athlon 64-bit X2 with 32GB of RAM. Will Windows 8 see all of the RAM? Technically the machine came with Windows 7, and there is a serial number on it but I am sure I wiped away the Windows 7 recovery partition when I switched to Linux....

• I cannot connect to home server after a few hours

  I have an old PC and I decided to revive it. A LAMP (for my own use) and a P2P server (torrent and e2dk). My old PC is an AMD Athlon XP (1400 MHz) with 384 Mb of RAM First of all I installed Ubuntu Server 11.10, SSH, FTP, SAMBA and LAMP. With this configuration my home server works well, with no problem. Then I went to the P2P server and I tried rTorrent and then uTorrent Server Alpha. And here is my problem. After a few hours (maybe 10 hours, or maybe 30 hours) with the torrent app running (rTorrent or uTorrent) I lose the connection to my home server. That is, I cannot access via ssh, I cannot access the apache server, etc. but I can ping the home server. It seems that the server freezes and all I can do is reboot the server physically. So, I have two questions: What is the problem? and How can I solve it?

• My new SSD is causing issues. How can I solve them?

  Computer specs 1 TB harddisc 120 GB 520intel SSD 8 GB DDR3 RAM Athlon Phenom II x64 955 3. 2ghz DK DFI Lanparty FX7900 M3H3 motherboard ASUS ATI RADEON HD6970 2 GB I have bought a new SSD (Intel 520, 120 GB), and wanted to use this as my system disc. I removed the other harddisc, and installed the SSD with the newest firmware. And then Windows 7 I updated Windows 7 with no problems and then put back my old harddrive. I formatted that old harddrive just to clean up at the same time... So at this stage everything was perfect. My new SSD was set as Master 0 Primary it boots on it and I have 1 TB emptyu harddrive I can use for whatever I want. So far no errors at all Now here is the problem, I installed a few games and everytime I tried to play the computer would say Windows must restart because DCOM server process launcher service terminated, or it says Windows must now restart because the Plug and Play service terminated unexpectedly Most commonly this error is caused by a rootkit virus, well I have tried formatting my entire computer, and running every antivirus I could find, so that shouldn't be it. I've also read somewhere it might happen when there are hardware issues. That on the otherhand would make sense, as I just put in a new SSD. I don't expect you to know this error. I haven't found anyone who knew it yet. maybe you can me guide through what might have gone wrong when I placed in the SSD? What have I checked regarding the SSD? It displays the right name when the computer starts up It has the newest firmware Did a 'sfc /scannow' which told me everything was fine I don't know what to do from here. Everything seems to work great with the drive. when I start playing games my computer crashes.

  This problem has lasted for the past 48 hours. The first time it happened, a program I was running stopped responding, so I tried to end it from task manager. The processes at first were listed fine until hovered upon. Eventually, despite the mouse still being able to move, after a few persisting clicks the mouse finally stopped moving. The screen went blank shortly thereafter. The second time it occurred, items on the screen stopped responding - hovering over the taskbar or such wouldn't elicit a response. Sound would still play however. Eventually, the mouse became unresponsive and the system restarted itself. I suspect that it may be a problem of my SSD drive. After looking through some Google search results, I downloaded HDTunePro to determine if there's a problem with the drive. Results returned a problem of reallocated sector count. An error scan also revealed 48 bad sectors. Also, an attempt to backup the contents of the most important areas of the drive returned a few explorer "Error: cannot read source from disk" errors. Should I ditch the drive and use another drive or is there anything that can be done to repair the drive? SSD: OCZ Petrol 64gb CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640 RAM: Generic 3GB DDR2 Motherboard: Gigabyte MA74GM-S2H OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Thanks!

• Diagnosing RAM issues

  I have an old Acer Aspire T180 desktop. The specs are as follows: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz 1GB DDR2 SDRAM 160GB DVD-Writer (DVD±R/±RW) Gigabit Ethernet 17" Active Matrix TFT Color LCD Windows Vista Home Basic Mini-tower AST180-UA381B According to the information in the computer's documentation the computer comes with 1 GB of RAM. It has two DDR2 SDRAM sticks. I used to have Windows Vista installed. Then I removed it and install Windows 7, and now I have since removed Windows 7 and installed Windows XP. According to Windows XP with both RAM sticks in the computer has 768 MB. Isn't this supposed to be 1 GB of RAM or 1024 MB of RAM? Is the amount of RAM installed only partly used by the Operating System? Is there's something I'm missing? If I remove either one of the RAM sticks I'm left with 448 MB of RAM. These numbers don't seem to add up. If each of the RAM sticks contains at least 448 MB of RAM shouldn't they (both being in) provide 896 MB of RAM. Even then, isn't that less than a GB of RAM? I'm not too experienced in hardware so I thought this would be the best place to ask. As a follow up question, is the RAM I have enough to run/multitask with Windows XP efficiently? I plan to do a lot of computing with the system (although not gaming), should I invest in more RAM?

• Installing a new Motherboard in a HP xw6200 case

  I have a HP xw6200 Workstation, that is rather long in the tooth, and with 2 physical CPUs, it is quite inefficient. So, the plan was to upgrade the internals. Nothing special: AMD Athlon II X4 640 ASUS M4A78KT-M LE (mATX) 2x 2GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM. 3p under my £150 budget The issues: The pin connector for the front panel isn't a good fit, but I can trim it to size. The PSU has a 8-Pin Power connector, unsurprisingly, the new board has a 4 pin socket. The pins do line up, but I would have to cut it in half to fit. Finally, due to the weight of heat-sinks, they are screwed directly into the case. It turns out that these screws also lock the motherboard in place. As to remove it, you remove the heat-sinks, slide the motherboard across and lift it out. I tested the new board for fit, and while it slots in fine, it's not secure. There is nowhere to screw the board down, it is just held in place with plastic standoffs. The only idea I had, was to wedging something between the side of the motherboard and part of the case. Any suggestions?

• 3-4 old computers = general purpose cluster?

  I have 3 old computers lying around right now running a P2 at 800 MHz(?), Intel Mobile 1.6 GHz, AMD Athlon XP 2000+ at 1.66 GHz, and (might not use this) P4 at 2.7 GHz, all with 512 MB Ram, and am considering clustering them together for fun/knowledge. They would be running an undecided version of linux, preferably ubuntu based. The issue is what I want to use it for: general computing and occasional video encoding. By general computing I mean day to day tasks. However I'm not sure if every program started by a single X session is going to exist on the same machine, defeating the purpose of such a system. Will programs be split up or exist on one machine? Second, assuming this is running 100baseT ethernet (not sure if the PCI slot itself could handle Gigabit), would the speed of having a program exist over the network be an issue? It seems that the constant asking of various things in RAM would be quite slow. And before you say "buy another computer!", that's not the point of this question. I'm asking would it be usable, not necessarily practical. And yes I know, this is going to be extreamly power consuming.

• Are there any benchmarks showing difference between hardware virtualisation enabled/disabled?

  I have a 13" sub-laptop/large-netbook, it has an AMD Athlon Neo X2 L335, and I chose this one because it supports hardware virtualisation. In the end, I hardly do any virtualisation on it, however, when I do... it is fast. To my shock, I went in to the BIOS and saw that virtualisation was disabled! I turned this on and, I see no speed difference.... or at least none that I can tell. I do not have time to do a full set of benchmarks - and I run quite a bit of software on the host, so it wouldn't be scientific. I have searched quite a few places and I just can not find any benchmarks showing the difference of virtualisation bit enabled/disabled on the same hardware. Does anyone have any benchmarks they have seen that they can share? In addition, I know there was an uproar a while ago as Sony disable the hardware virtualisation on some models and only offer it in their higher models as a premium feature, however, apart from forcing an up-sell, are there any benefits to having it disabled e.g. battery/heat? I just can't find any information and can't work out why it would be disabled by default. Edit--- To add, The only thing I can find is that without it, you can not perform x64 virtualisation as fast. This is the only down side I can find. However, if this is the only difference, then I am still interested in the second part of the question - why offer the option to disable it?

• Nvidia 9800GT randomly prevents computer from booting

  My computer has been running Windows and Linux perfectly fine with my 9800GT for the past year or so, but today it refused to boot. When I press the power button, this is what happens: Power button flashes once. Fans whir. Graphics card makes clicking noise. Computer reboots. Go back to 1. The cycle just keeps going, and I have to yank the cord to make the computer stop. After about 30 attempts at booting it, the computer powers on and everything works. I'm pretty sure that the graphics card isn't malfunctioning, as I've been GPU computing on it for a while now without any hiccups. But the strange thing is, the computer boots perfectly fine in only 5 boots if I remove the card. The computer is a HP Pavilion a6028x Desktop PC: Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 (W) 4600+ 2.4 GHz (AM2 socket) Motherboard: ECS MCP61PM-HM (Nettle 1) RAM: 3GB DDR2 (two different brands) More specs here Does anybody know what could be the problem? • how can a web page change my mouse speed?

  I usually have many tabs open in Firefox and I haven't been able to find one specific website that causes this because I don't seem to notice it right away. I'm going to click on something on my desktop and I am lifting up the mouse several times to get across the screen. It doesn't seem to matter what program I might be using because this happens on all desktops and in Firefox, too. So I go in my settings and I turn up the mouse speed all the way and it's still not really acceptable. It doesn't matter if I click on different tabs but when I close the browser, my mouse is way too sensitive, like I'd expect at the max setting. Then I go back to Control Center and return my mouse speed and acceleration to normal. When I restart my browser, the mouse remains normal. So is there something to this before I start wasting my time hunting through my history to discover which website or sites are having this effect? ...and if it is a specific site and I locate it, what can I change to stop it's effect on my mouse besides not visiting it? I am using Linux Mint 13 on a box with an AMD Athlon processor and 2gigs of ram. I never installed another browser because everything works for me.

  I have installed Adobe CS6 on Windows 8 and get the error "0xc000007b" every time I open open Adobe After Effects. All other Adobe software, including Photoshop and Premiere Pro, work perfectly. • Windows 7 installation too slow

  I have P.C with Emaxx Motherboard : emx-a55gm-icafe with AMD dual core processor,500 GB WD Sata HDD,2GB of RAM,samsung dvdr,windows 7 dvd which is all brandnew. When i was trying to install windows 7 ulitmate on my P.C it really takes hours on setting up, which is really rare and i'm still hopeless getting a solution for this.But I don't have any issue installing windows 7 on my HP laptop that can be finished within just more than 20minutes. There is same issue that ive search in google and disabling the floppy disk drive in BIOS is their solution, but my problem is, Emaxx icafe doesnt have floppy disk drive setting on bios. I already change ACHI/IDE Support but i have still no luck. Is there any solution for this? Thanks in Regards

• Hardware selection for Linux machine

  Hi, I am building a new box, and planning to install Ubuntu 9-04 or Ubuntu 9-10 on it. I am wary of the hardware selection because in the past I struggled with lack of drivers or driver incompatibility with the network card and video card, etc. The last time I built a Linux box was 2007, and I have not kept up to date with the changes since. One notable difference is that I can no longer find motherboards with nVidia chip sets.   I've setup a nginx server running php 5.3.6 and mysql 5.5.1.3. My computer is an AMD quadcore 9650, 4gb ram, 500gb 7200rpm HD. I ran the PHP MySQL Benchmark Tool v. 0.1, and got the following results: Testing a(n) MYISAM table using 100000 rows. Successfully created database speedtestdb Sucessfully created table speedtesttable Table Type Verified: MYISAM .. Done. 100000 inserts in 19.73628 seconds or 5067 inserts per second. Done. 100000 row reads in 0.2801 seconds or 357015 row reads per second. Done. 100000 updates in 4.03876 seconds or 24760 updates per second. I'm wondering where this stands as far as performance goes, and what are some steps I can take if any to improve on this. I'm not trying to make anything fantastic, just getting a feel for how to best optimize a web server in this configuration.

• Gateway SX2300-01u CPU/PSU issues

  I have a 2-yr-old Gateway SX2300-01u with an AMD Phenom X3 8550 that I feel has about a year or so of life left, but I am having a couple of hardware issues that I have not been able to resolve. First, the power supply fan sounds like much louder than before and the PSU itself is really hot. The PSU model (Liteon PS 5221-06) is not available at a reasonable price; are there any good alternatives? Could I replace just the PSU fan? Also, the CPU fan failed sometime back, but my replacement, which supposedly fits the MB (Socket AM2+) doesn't actually fit properly. Any idea why?

• Adobe Master Collection CS3 wont run on my Windows 7 64bit

  I have a brand new HP p6230y. My first step after booting it up was to install Master Collection. It installs fine, but when I go to run each of the applications, and they all behave differently. I have re-installed twice already. Photoshop opens, but freezes. Acrobat tells me that I need to reinstall. Nothing else even opens (no freezing, no process in taskman). Any Ideas? • PC reboots automatically in the begining

  I have a AMD Phenom II 3GHz. 2 GB RAM system running on Windows 7. Off late my PC does not start properly I have to start it at least 7-8 times before it starts. It starts and then shuts down. Every time the time for which the system is up increases. After 7-8 attempts it starts an works fine. I have to give it a min between restarts (USB mouse light goes off). If I try restarting before this time the PC does not start. I am suspecting humidity playing some factor as this issue has started creeping up ever since the rains have started.

• High server load - [jbd2/md1-8] using 99.99% IO

  I've been having spike in load over the last week. This usually occurs once or twice a day. I've managed to identify from iotop that [jbd2/md1-8] is using 99.99 % IO. During the high load times there is no high traffic to the server. Server specs are: AMD Opteron 8 core 16 GB RAM 2x2.000 GB 7.200 RPM HDD Software Raid 1 Cloudlinux + Cpanel Mysql is properly tuned Apart from the spikes, the load usually is around 0.80 at most. I've searched around but can't find what [jbd2/md1-8] does exactly. Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know a possible solution? Thank you. • Black screen on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm experiencing some problems. The first thing I noticed is that when I click the Workspace switcher all I get is a black screen (I can guess where the different workspaces are located and clicked on them, not a practical solution though). In addition when I lock the screen or suspend the laptop (a Vaio VPCEB4M1E) I get a shifted screen (I see the right most vertical stripe on the left size of the monitor and nothing about all the rest, to put it clearly I can see the gear that allows me to turn the pc off, etc, but not much more..) when I go to the additional driver menu I see the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" are installed and the post-release update version is available. I don't know if the problem is driver related, so before doing anything I'd like to get some suggestions from you guys. Thanks you!

• Laptop as server [closed]

  My client wants to use a cheap AMD E-300 ,5400 rpm disk,4gb memory laptop as a POS server and music player at the same time with dual screen. I couldnt convince him that this wouldnt be a good choice. The applications are a database a music player ,and the .net 4 application. I am afraid of performance issues. However the reasons for this choice is that laptop takes not much space ,easy dual screen for music player and application ,can easilly be replaced and that it will last forever as none of his laptops are ever broken. I believe that this is a good idea but i feel thats something wrong there. Do you believe that is an ok choice?

Now I am planning to install Windows XP sp3 (32-bit) and Windows 7 (64bit). My first questions are: Is my system enough for the above mentioned two OSes? Which OS one should be installed first on local disk c: drive? I have both XP and vista drivers on separate disks as provided with my motherboard but don't have drivers for win-7, so can I use my vista driver for win-7?
