• Computer won't recognize second WD internal HD

  I installed a Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB internal hard drive, and want to use it for back up. My BIOS recognizes the device, but it is not recognized in Disk Management. It also is not recognized in "my computer." When I right-click my C drivepropertieshardware, I see it listed. First the drive was plugged into SATA port 1 on my motherboard, then I tried it in port 3, where it remains. I've been working on this for hours. Any help would be appreciated. • Xeon X5550 vs Six-core Opteron for database server

  I'm specing out a database server, and the price works out to be reasonably close between an Intel X5550 Quad-core and an AMD 2425HE (2.1Ghz) Six-core Opteron. I've been looking for some comparisons between the two, but the only thing useful I've found is an AnandTech Review of the 2435 which compares it to Intel Xeons, but concludes they both have their place. My load is MS SQL Server 2008, with an OLTP database that has about an equal amount of reading/writing (and it's a reasonably heavy load). So my question is, what is going to work better in this situation, assuming the drives are the same: Xeon X5550, with 16GB 1333Mhz RAM (Dell R510) or an Opteron 2425HE (2.1Ghz) or 2439SE (2.8Ghz) with 16GB of 800Mhz RAM? (Dell 2970) Note: the 2439 adds $500, but the overall pricing works out that it's not that much more than the R510. Using the 2425HE, the Dell 2970 server is slightly less than the similarly-equipped R510). If it adds a decent amount of performance, it's worthwhile to go faster. (single CPU, in both cases).

• Windows 8 Radeon update broke some games

  I've been using Windows 8 Consumer Preview 32-bit on my desktop for months, and recently did a software update through Windows Update. An update for my Radeon HD 5450 driver (Catalyst) to WDDM 1.2 was in the list of updates, and installed. When I went to play CS:GO and discovered that when loaded, it would not display the GUI (menus, sometimes even the background) after a few seconds of flickering GUI. I can still navigate the menus 'by feel' and connect to and play on servers, but have no GUI, no buy menu, no map, no cross-hairs, no health indicator, etc. I have tried CS:S, which works, and Borderlands, which doesn't even load the intro videos before the first menu screen. I've tried re-installing Catalyst from the AMD website, and the beta, and tried uninstalling and reinstalling CS:GO. The problem with it (and Borderlands) still happen. What broke, and how can I fix it? I'll be reinstalling soon anyway to dump Windows 8 back to 7, but would like to be able to game until then.

• Virtualbox 4 hangs when trying to install ubuntu guest on ubuntu host system

  I'm trying to install ubuntu server using virtualbox 4.0.4 in a ubuntu 10.10 host OS. I have the iso image on my hard drive which I used to perform the install. I edited the settings and added this image at the storage section, selected it as a primary master, so I could boot from it and start the install process. But now, each time I start the installation, at the very beginning or if I'm lucky, after I click on the install link at the welcome screen, the process hangs and all the computer is blocked. This happened 3 times already. I even tried to perform the installation using an old CD I had with the 9.10 server version, thinking that the iso image might be the issue, but the problem still persists. I dont know what could cause this problem. My computer is a dell laptop with AMD processor (I dont know if this is important). Any help is very appreciated.

• Enabling Surround sound on a Realtek ALC892 via SPDIF, on Windows 7

  I have a problem with my ALC892, on an ASRock mainboard (ASRock 890FX Deluxe4). I get only stereo sounds if I use SPDIF connection, in general. My amp shows that is getting surround sound only when I use the Test feature of Windows 7. This test feature allows to know which formats are supported by the audio chip. The tests render correctly both Dolby Digital and DTS. You can find this test under Sounds, Playback Devices, Select Digital Audio, then "Properties". I am using Windows 7 x64, with the latest drivers from the official Realtek website. I also tested other driver versions, both from the Realtek website and from the ASRock one, but had no luck. Thanks for the help. Some specs: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 MOBO: ASRock 890FX Deluxe4 (with onboard Realtek ALC892) Audio amp: Onkyo R-380 (works fine with other sources like PS3 and Xbox 360)

• Performance difference between MacBook Pro (2.8 GHz) vs Air (1.7 GHz)?

  I'm comparing these two Apple laptops: MacBook Pro (13", 2011 model): 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor with 4MB shared L3 cache 4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory on 2.4GHz configuration MacBook Air (13", 2011 model): 1.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with 3MB shared L3 cache 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 onboard memory Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory There's definitely a gap between them in terms of CPU speed and graphics, but what practical difference would this make on a day-to-day basis? On the one hand, I love the sleek, thin appearance of the Air. On the other hand, I don't want a machine that's going to be dog-slow when doing tasks such as running Virtual Machines, dual-booting to Windows and running multiple instances of Visual Studio, and maybe some light gaming. Is there going to be a major difference that makes the MacBook Pro a more attractive purchase?

  I have a 64 bit (AMD)CPU but it has 32 bit Windows 8 installed. Could I somehow trickily install another Windows XP 64 bit alongside to that ? I want to do this because I almost never use the Windows 8 apps & majorly use this machine for java development. So I would like to run a lightweight OS implementation. Additionally, With 64 bit version of Windows XP, I would be able to take advantage of my 64 bit CPU. So, how do I do it? (I hope there's some way to do this:)

• Performance difference between compiled and binary linux distributions/packages

  I was searching a lot on the internet and couldn't find an exact answer. There are distros like Gentoo (or FreeBSD) which does not come with binaries but only with source code for packages (ports). The majority of distros uses binary backages (debian, etc.). First question: How much speed increase can I expect from compiled package? How much speed increase can I get from real world packages like apache or mysql? i.e. queries per second? Second question: Does binary package means it does not use any CPU instructions that was introduced after first AMD 64bit CPU? With the 32bit packages does it mean that the package will run on 386 and basically does not use most of the modern CPU instructions? Additional info: - I am not talking about desktop, but server environment. - I dont care about compile time - I have more servers, so speed increase more than 15% is worth for using source code packages - Please no flamewars.   I've heard that NTFS compression can reduce performance due to extra CPU usage, but I've read reports that it may actually increase performance because of reduced disk reads. How exactly does NTFS compression affect system performance? Notes: I'm running a laptop with a 5400 RPM hard drive, and many of the things I do on it are I/O bound. The processor is a AMD Phenom II with four cores running at 2.0 GHz. The system is defragmented regularly using UltraDefrag. The workload is mixed read-write, with reads occurring somewhat more often than writes. The files to be compressed include personal documents and selected programs, including several (less demanding) games and Visual Studio (which tends to be I/O bound more often than not).

  Did anybody try to install Hyper-V on Intel Atom platform? Hyper-V requires: x64 compatible processor with Intel VT or AMD-V technology enabled Hardware Data Execution Prevention (DEP) It seems that both requirements are satisfied with Atom as processor. However, I wonder whether there is some blocking issue (e.g. BIOS that does not support it) since all Atom motherboards I checked had quite old north/south-bridge. My intentions are to run two low-requirements virtual machines (embedded Linux), so performance should not be an issue.

• Acer Aspire 3820TG video card driver issue for Windows 8 Pro

  The model for Acer laptop is ATI mobility Radeon 5650. I am using Windows 8 Pro from MSDN. It was working fine until two days ago when Microsoft pushes an update. After the update, my video card stops working and I only see black screen after loading splash screen. I can go in Safe Mode. I tried to install driver from AMD website but it failed with error message "load detection driver failed". Anyone else have the same issue? Any idea how to solve this? I need to go in Win8 for my latest development.

• Can't Use Switchable Graphics

  I can't get my switchable graphics cards working on my Acer 4820TG laptop. It came installed with Windows 7, but I've installed the RTM build of Windows 8. I have to keep the "Graphics" setting on the BIOS set to "Discrete," if it's set to "Switchable" the screen turns black after the boot animation is complete. The machine has an Intel graphics card and an AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5650, and I know that the Intel card is working. I've seen it work a couple of times with Windows 8 installed, but for some reason it just doesn't anymore. I know that it's not broken, because when I plug in a secondary monitor, and move the cursor to the right, I can see it on that monitor. Are there drivers or something I need to install? I've tried a number of drivers and utilities from Acer's website, none of which have fixed the problem.

  I have planned to buy a graphics card. When searching for a particular chipset (e.g. GTX 460) I find cards of different vendors (i.e. Gigabyte, Palit, PNY, ...). I can figure out differences in frequency, memory, and equipment. When I read test reports, usually a particular NVIDIA card is compared with its ATI/AMD "counterpart" - have not really found a comparison of all vendors for a particular NVIDIA chipset. So in order to make a decision: a) Are the drivers all the same for all the cards of a particular chipset (and provided by NVIDIA or the vendor?) b) How to figure out which card actually to buy. OK, I choose chipset, and memory, and check the card has the required ports, but then ....

  Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver). • XenServer 6.2 crashes everytime I try to install a new Windows 7 x64 vm

  I'm running XenServer 6.2 with all patches and updates on two boxes. One box is an intel core i7 2600K.. works great. My latest box is an AMD A10 APU.. and everytime I try to install Windows 7 OS as a guest.. I get to the screen where Windows files start to expand, and suddenly the entire box freezes up. Is there a log I can check, and or a way to migrate a working Windows 7 image I created on Box 1 over to Box 2?

• Random BSODs on Win7 boot. Can't find a valid reason.

  Hi, I bought and assembled a new pc: ASUS m4a785td-v EVO AMD x4 620 OCZ Black Edition 2x 2gb WD 500gb sata Win7 Ultimate 64bit fresh install BSOD on boot. Formatted, reinstalled, BSOD on install. Ran memtest - no errors. Ran Win7 install in safe mode. Installed, random BSOD on win7 startup, even in safe mode. Updated BIOS. Ran the win7 memtest (no error), booted after some tries and ran Prime95 blend test for 12 hours straight with no errors at all! When the pc has booted, win7 runs as smooth as possible, I've been playing STALKER for 4 hours straight with not a single hiccup. Using Blue Screen View I can see that every BSOD involves: ntoskrnl.exe Here are the dumps Any help would be greatly appreciated, this thing is driving me crazy.

• NFS or GFS for LVS 10 Server Setup

  Currently we have a 10 servers LVS hosting setup. The people we hired to set it up did not anything about GFS which was our preferred Central Storage File System Solution. As we have tight time constraint, we just told them to use whatever they were familiar with which is NFS. I have since done some research and it seems that NFS is not ideal for the type of high traffic site we are hoping to build. I couldn't find much info online about the signaficance differences between the 2. As we to setup all servers again right now, should we stick with NFS or find someone who knows how to setup GFS amd go with that. We need a setup that is highly reliable and scalable as we intend. As after initial setup is done, we expect high increases in traffic and load.

• NTFS write speed really slow (<15MB/s) on Ubuntu

  When copying large files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12-15MB/s on drives using the NTFS filesystem. I tested multiple drives (all connected using SATA) which all got writespeeds of 100MB/s+ on Windows or when formatted with ext4, so it's not an alignment or drive issue. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. AMD dual core processor (2.2 GHz) Kernel version: 3.5.0-23-generic Ubuntu 12.04 ntfs-3g version: both 2012.1.15AR.1 (Ubuntu default version) and 2013.1.13AR.2 How can I fix the writespeed?

• Getting BootMgr not found errors repeatedly on Win7 x64

  So here is the basic configuration of the box: Primary RAID 1 (Mirror, Bootable): 2x 300GB WD SATA drives AMD Phenom Quad Core x64 @2.2 ASUS M3N78 Pro Board 4GB RAM Win 7 Ultimate Additionally, this box is a Host OS for several CentOS Boxes via VirtualBox. The box runs like a champ but, for whatever reason, everytime I restart the machine I get a BootMgr not found error when the box tries to boot. I pop in my Win DVD, select 'Repair Windows' then 'Fix Start Up Problems' and everything works fine...once. When I restart the box again I have to go back through this process. Any ideas on what is going on?

• Linux Live CD cannot play video

  I want to switch from windows to linux, but before the switch I would like to try them out in the Live CD. I downloaded the iso and created a multiboot usb stick ( by YUMI Multiboot USB Creator ). I can boot into Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 64 bit LTS and Linux Mint 13 Mate 64 bit. I can access the hard drive from there and I tried some video with the default player comes with them ( e.g: GNOME Player and VLC Player ). The player opened but the video didn't play. However, I can play the same video in Puppy Linux. ( Puppy Linux doesn't has a choice over 32-bit or 64-bit ) Maybe my CPU didn't support 64 bit? Here is a snap from CPUZ: CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 710

  I have a problem that is driving me to the edge. My graphics card periodically looses power for a moment, then comes back. Once in a while it takes much longer, like 5 minutes. I have always tried rebooting during that period, since I don't know then. Black screen, with a no power message across my monitor. All equipment is only a few months old. The Motherboard is a few months old, MSI N9A2 Platinum Revision 1 (AMD). The Video Card is a Gigabyte Radeon HD 4850 1GB. • Hardware upgrade: Windows 7 bluescreens, Vista loads

  I just did a fairly significant hardware upgrade while keeping my hard disks. The old system was a dell Optiplex 745 with an Intel Core 2 duo, LGA 775. The new system is custom built, Intel i5 750. I know you're supposed to do a clean install with a hardware upgrade like this, but I'd had success in the past doing the stealth hardware upgrade like this, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit gets through the loading screen and immediately blue screens and reboots. Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, which I have on an old hard drive from an AMD box (!!) loads up fine. I ran through the windows memory checker just to be sure, and my memory is fine. So, is the BSOD the result of some sort of protection mechanism specific to Windows 7? Is there any hope of salvaging that install?

  I'm into web development and my machine (AMD Phenom II, 8G RAM) is running Ubuntu 13.04. I love my current setup but I kinda miss some of Windows software like MSOffice or Adobe suites, and running on Virtualbox doesn't feel as snappy for me.... So I'm thinking of buying a new cheap machine where I would install Linux and do my development work there and have my current machine run Windows. I just found this thing called Raspberry pi which is really cheap and requires 12v only (I think) which makes it good for downloading stuff overnight. So, does it make sense to buy Raspberry pi, make it my primary dev machine, Windows being the secondary (for Adobe and browser testing of course)? Basically, I want to know if Raspberry pi meets the following requirements: It should run ArchLinux Sublime Text 3 python ruby nginx nodejs Deluge or Transmission (well, maybe just those, no need for videos and music players)

  I have a Windows Server 2008 machine running in VirtualBox. On initial installation, only one processor was made available, but now I want to run it as a multiprocessor machine. I have made all four cores available in the VirtualBox settings (as well as enabling VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging), but Task Manager still only shows one CPU. However, the four CPU cores are visible in Device Manager under Processors.
