• Compass Rails 3.0 working with 'compass watch' but not without

  I'm trying Compass with Rails 3.0.7, just trying to get started. Using gem compass-rails. If I put my sass file in app/assets/stylesheets and run 'compass watch', everything works ok: the compiled css is put into public/stylesheets. However, if I stop 'watch' and rely on Rails to do the compilation, it does not work. Instead, the program looks at the public/stylesheets/sass folder for the input. Furthermore, if a file in that folder has the '@include "compass"' directive, I get an error that the file is not found. How do I force Rails to look in the right place -- app/assets/stylesheets?

• What's the easiest way to get the result of an HTTP GET request in using URL in JRuby

  I'm attempting to build a Tropo Ruby application and I need to retrieve the result of an HTTPS GET. The Tropo platform doesn't have the httpclient Ruby gem so I can't use that. The Ruby engine used is JRuby so a suggestion has been to make use of the Java URL class to do the request. I've played around with it a little bit and I seem to be able to create the URL object ok but am now struggling with how to get the results of executing the request. • How to solve rake tasks deprecation on the rails plugin?

  Because of the concept introduced in here, Rails::Plugin is nothing more than a Rails::Engine, but since it's loaded too late in the boot process, it does not have the same configuration powers as a bare Rails::Engine. Opposite to Rails::Railtie and Rails::Engine, you are not supposed to inherit from Rails::Plugin. Rails::Plugin is automatically configured to be an engine by simply placing inside vendor/plugins. Since this is done automatically, you actually cannot declare a Rails::Engine inside your Plugin, otherwise it would cause the same files to be loaded twice. This means that if you want to ship an Engine as gem it cannot be used as plugin and vice-versa. Besides this conceptual difference, the only difference between Rails::Engine and Rails::Plugin is that plugins automatically load the file "init.rb" at the plugin root during the boot process. rake tasks in the rails plugins are deprecated and it is advised to use lib/tasks instead. How to solve this? Can I just simply move the plugin's tasks to the lib/tasks?

• Rspec-rails doesn't seem to find my models

  Hi - I'm trying out rspec, and immediately hit a wall when it doesn't seem to load db records I know exist. Here's my fairly simple spec (no tests yet). require File.expand_path(File.dirname(__FILE__) + '../spec_helper') describe SomeModel do before :each do @user1 = User.find(1) @user2 = User.find(2) end it "should do something fancy" end I get an ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound exception, saying it couldn't find User w/ ID=1 or ID=2, which I know for a fact exist. I set both test and development databases to point to the same schema in database.yml, so this shouldn't be database mixup. I also ran script/generate rspec after installing the gems (rspec, rspec-rails), and gem.config both environment.rb and test.rb. Any idea what I'm missing? thanks. EDIT Seems I was running the tests with rake spec:models, which emptied the db and thus no records were found. When I used % spec spec/models/some_model_spec.rb, everything worked as expected.

• Serving files inside of directories with ruby and mongrel

  I made a simple web server in Ruby using the Mongrel gem. It works great for files in a single directory, but I run into some path issues when inside a directory. Lets say we have 2 files in a directory named "dir1", "index.html" and "style.css". If we visit http://host/dir1/index.html, the file is found, but style.css isn't because it's trying to load "style.css" from http://host/style.css instead of inside the directory. index.html is trying to load style.css as if its in the same directory as itself. <link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> I can get the file if I enter the full path of style.css: /dir1/style.css but it doesn't seem to remember it's already inside a directory and that no path before a filename should serve from the current directory. • Integrating Fedex and UPS into Rails Apps

  I'm working on integrating a shipping solution into a Rails ecommerce app. We're only going to use one shipping provider. So the question is: Fedex or UPS? I'm wondering what Rails developers think about the tech side of this question. What do you think about the APIs, ease of integration, focus on developer's needs between Fedex and UPS? I was leaning towards Fedex, but from looking at the developers resources sections of both sites, it seems that UPS might be more developer friendly. Also, I'm going to be using Shopify's active_shipping gem: http://github.com/Shopify/active_shipping And I also based my app off the Spree Ecommerce solution, but I don't think that's particularly relevant to the question. Spree wrote a wrapper to integrate active_shipping with the Spree system. I gave away all my points, so SO wont' let me post another link in this question. But if you google "Spree active-shipping", their wrapper on github is the first result. Thanks.

• Rails: ValidationReflection and Formtastic not working together

  I installed validation_reflection as a gem and out of the box it picked up on my validates_presence_of validations. But it is not picking up on any of the other default rails validations such as validates_format_of. I know from the documentation that i am supposed to add something like: config.reflected_validations << :validates_format_of to my config/plugins/validation_reflection.rb file (which didn't exist initially). I did this but nothing changed (i restarted the web server in between). I am not sure if it just isn't picking up on my file and loading validation_reflection.rb or if i have done something wrong. Anyone have any insights?

• Google Maps, Ruby on Rails, Zoom level with one marker

  I am adding google maps support with apneadiving / Google-Maps-for-Rails (thanks awesome gem) I am finding one slight glitch, however, which very likely is my fault. auto_zoom works great when there are multiple markers. However, when there is only one marker it is zoomed in to the max level which is not pretty. "zoom" will only work when auto_zoom is false, so that's not what I want. So therefore you could use "maxZoom" but now users cannot zoom in manually beyond that point which is not what I want. Is there a way around this? Is my explanation making sense? Is this a limitation of Google Maps API? Thanks...

  I'm having some issues with variable scope with the capistrano-ext gem's multistage module. This doesn't seem very DRY. Ideally, I think I'd like everything to be in the deploy.rb file. If there were a variable set with the current stage, everything would be really clean. UPDATE: I found a solution. • Action Mailer Confirmation Emails - Ruby on Rails...

  I have successfully installed the Clearance Gem from ThoughtBot. Clearance sends a confirmation email upon a new sign_up and suggests adding: config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => 'localhost:3000' } to your /environments/test.rb and development.rb. I have tried this and also config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => '127.0.0.1', :port => 3000 } But can't seem to get rails to send the email. As I am new to both Ruby and Rails, I am wondering if there is some step/config that ThoughtBot is assuming I have already done to send emails. What am I doing wrong/missing? • Redirect Output of Capistrano

  I have a Capistrano deploy file (Capfile) that is rather large, contains a few namespaces and generally has a lot of information already in it. My ultimate goal is, using the Tinder gem, paste the output of the entire deployment into Campfire. I have Tinder setup properly already. I looked into using the Capistrano capture method, but that only works for the first host. Additionally that would be a lot of work to go through and add something like: output << capture 'foocommand' Specifically, I am looking to capture the output of any deployment from that file into a variable (in addition to putting it to STDOUT so I can see it), then pass that output in the variable into a function called notify_campfire. Since the notify_campfire function is getting called at the end of a task (every task regardless of the namespace), it should have the task name available to it and the output (which is stored in that output variable). Any thoughts on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi there, I've got a bunch of products with sizes to ship and I need to find out the cheapest rate. Given a shipment made out of sizes, say [1,3,3,5] I need to decide how to ship - all together or separate. However it's not as simple as [1,3,3,5] or 1 & 3 & 3 & 5, i need all of the possible combinations something like: [ [[1,3,3,5]], ( 1 shipment ) [[1],[3,3,5]], ( 2 shipments ) [[1,3],[3,5]], ( 2 shipments ) [[1,3,3],[5]], ( 2 shipments ) [[1,5],[3,3]], ( 2 shipments ) [[1,3],[3],[5]], ( 3 shipments ) [[1],[3],[3],[5]] ( 4 shipments ) ] ( etc - many more i assume ) I've tried combinations from the facets gem but it's not quite what i'm after, and I'm not sure how else to approach this problem. I understand it probably has a name and a solution if only I knew the name :) I understand there could be a lot of combinations, but the initial array of sizes won't be larger than 7 or so. • Surgical slave reads for Ruby on Rails, mulitple databases.

  Greetings, I'm currently working on a multiple database rails application. I want to off load the SELECT queries on to the slave databases for only SOME of the databases or specific models. The issue is that in places, we swap out the current database connection and put in a different one for a short time; to load fixtures or to handle sharding. Does anyone have any recommendations on a ruby gem that 1. will split select/(sql writes) with a considerable amount of control. We want to handle just some models and we are looking for a neat surgical fix. 2. does not monkey around with activerecord. 3. is still being maintained. TIA -daniel

• Ruby fixtures error with password column

  I am trying to load a fixture for my tests which has a password column (binary datatype). The tool i am using uses EzCrypto gem for encrypting and decrypting passwords before they are stored/retrieved. Now if my column is binary i thought rails would automatically store the password as encrypted - but all i get is: 1) Error: test_is_working(FirstTest): RuntimeError: Failed to decode the field. • Rails Beta3 & PaperClip & Passenger Bundler::PathError

  So I'm going around in circles with this - I'm using a fork of the Paperclip Rails gem to get it to work with Rails3. Works fine on my OSX box with Passenger. But on my server (CentOS 5) I get this this error: git://github.com/lmumar/paperclip.git (at rails3) is not checked out. Please runbundle install(Bundler::PathError)Blockquote I tried Bundle Pack, but that doesnt pack gems from github. I read a post about setting the parh to the BUNDLE_HOME in my application.rb file which I tried: ENV['BUNDLER_HOME']="~/.bundle/ruby/1.8/bundler/gems/" But that doesnt work. Any ideas anyone?   Before I begin, I am using Ruby on Rails and the Devise gem for user authentication. Hi, I was doing some research about account security and I found a blog post about the topic awhile ago but I can no longer find it again. I read something about when making a login system you should have 1 model for User, this contains a user's username, encrypted password, and email. You should also have a model for a user's Account. This contains everything else. A User has an Account. I don't know if I'm explaining this correctly since I haven't seen the blog post for several months and I lost my bookmark. Could someone explain how and why I should or shouldn't do this. My application deals with money so I need to cover my bases with security. Thanks.

  I have a Rails based server running several REST services and a Rails based web UI that interacts with the server using ActiveResource. Same server is being used by other clients( e.g: mobile). I have to generate documentation for the REST interface. I need to provide service URL, input/output and error document structure for each service. Ideally, I would like to use an interceptor at the server side that will document the service based on the existing traffic. I am wondering if there is a gem to do this.

I know there are some rough edges but I guess I'd like to know more about what the current limitations are and figure out if this is an option for us.
