  • Webserver security, intrusion detection, and file intregrity

    I would like to add some type of tracking / alerting on some linux webservers running PHP and Apache. In doing searches I have come across a lot of info from 2006-2009. Would like to revisit things and see what others are doing now. The main purpose here is to track when any files are changed and if so alert me somehow. The same goes for IDS and hopefully something that can reside on same server? Since some of these are small scale projects I would prefer opensource/free solutions that are really effective. Although I would still like to hear of other alternatives if someone has the experience and the cost can be justified.

  • Options for PCI-DSS on AWS - file integrity monitoring and intrusion detection

    I need to deploy some file integrity monitoring and intrusion detections software on AWS instances. I really wanted to use OSSEC, however it does not work well in an environment where servers can auto deploy and shut down based on load, because it requires server managed keys to be generated. Including the agent in the AMI will not allow monitoring as soon as it comes up because of that. There are many options out there, and several are listed in other posts on this site, however none that I've seen so far deal with the unique problems inherent in AWS or cloud based deployments in general. Can anyone point me at some products, preferably open source, that we might use to cover those portions of PCI DSS that require this software? Has anyone else achieved this on AWS?

  • Using MRTG's threshold feature to execute a php script

    I've set up mrtg using the online manual and the only online tutorial I found on the subject of thresholds, and the threshold just isn't firing. In my mrtg.cfg file, the relevant lines are ThreshDir: /path/to/mrtg/thresh ThreshMaxI[performance]: 1 ThreshMaxO[performance]: 1 ThreshProgI[performance]: /path/to/mrtg/scripts/alert.php ThreshProgO[performance]: /path/to/mrtg/scripts/alert.php The paths are right, because if I enter the paths wrong I get an error on executing mrtg. websitePerformance checks how long it takes to download the homepage, in milliseconds, so it should be exceeding the max every time. Alert.php is working fine when invoked directly from the shell, and when I point to a nonexistent script it tells me the script is not executable. No error messages are being generated, that I can find. The thresh directory is always empty. Why isn't the threshold being triggered by results that are greater than 1? Anyone have any suggestions?

    Is there good tool that can do same thing as windows 'mstsc' and also has some features, like save different session info, so don't need to remember difference IP/ID/pwd. Thanks. EDIT: Since I can't directly RDP to remote hosts, instead, I have to RDP to a terminal server and RDP from their to my destination. Is there client that can relay my connection from local and pass through the terminal to the real destination?

  • Drag and drop to attachments feature only working intermittently in Outlook 2010

    I've been trying to troubleshoot a problem with my Outlook 2010 install where the ability to drag and drop an attachment into a new email will stop working from time to time. It seems to be fairly moonphase-y in that I can't seem to find a correlation in what causes it to stop working. Some searching online lead me to try running this command through the windows run dialogue: Regsvr32 ole32.dll, which apparently re-registers that particular dll as a command component in the registry. It didn't work, but I was curious as to why it was a suggested fix, and if there was something similar to try that would work, or another known solution.

  • Spambot Infection Detection

    My server has been blocked by CBL for participating in curtwail spambot. Initially we suspected that it was coming from a PC and not from the server, but the router is blocking all packets on 25 except those coming from the server. I have just executed the tcpdump command and every 5 minutes I see a flurry of activity on port 25 that is very suspicious and I am sure that there is some process running on the server: 13:02:30.027436 IP exprod5og110.obsmtp.com.53803 > ubuntu.local.smtp: Flags [S], seq 171708781, win 5744, options [mss 1436,sackOK,TS val 3046699707 ecr 0,nop,wscale 2], length 0 I have stopped postfix, and yet there is still traffic on port 25 above. But how can I find what process is actually communicating on port 25 as it only rund for a few seconds and so for example lsof -i :25 will never catch it. I have been working on this now for 2 days, it is a live server and I cannot simply shut it down, any suggestion on how I can detect the source of this email bot process ?

    My laptop (Acer travelmate 4152NlCi)doesn't respond to the keyboard and mouse anymore while booting in Windows Xp Pro Sp3. i can't type the password and login. I have Opensuse 11.0 on it as well and it works. So I can boot into Linux and not Windows, not even in safe mode. What would be the troubleshooting steps?

    Now that Windows Server 2012 comes with de-duplication features for NTFS volumes I am having a hard time finding technical details about it. I can deduce from the TechNet documentation that the de-duplication action itself is an asynchronous process - not unlike how the SIS Groveler used to work - but there is virtually no detail about the implementation (algorithms used, resources needed, even the info on performance considerations is nothing but a bunch rule-of-thumb-style recommendations). Insights and pointers are greatly appreciated, a comparison to Solaris' ZFS de-duplication efficiency for a set of scenarios would be wonderful.

  • IPv6 feature in Network Adaptor is Slowing Internet

    The past few days, my internet browsing has become very poor. It's not a matter of speed, as a speed test will give at least 15Mbps. It seems as if my laptop has a hard time actually connecting to the sites. I've found a possible culprit, but don't know why it would affect anything: Going to adapter settings and disabling ipv6, but leaving ipv4, my browsing is back to normal. Re-enabling ipv6 brings back the issue. This is strange though, because I have always had ipv6 enabled. Moreover, using sites to test ipv6 compatibility, I fail with ipv6 enabled on my adapter, and pass when it's disabled. Ideas about why this is happening, and how to fix it?

  • DVD-ROM: Pioneer DVD-115GA not being detected.

    Specs to put things in context: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.00 GHz / 2 x 512 MB PC-3200 DDR RAM / 160 GB IDE HDD / 128 MB GeForce 6200 AGP / FIC AM37 / Windows XP Pro SP3 So this computer is actually an upgraded EMachines T2482. I found a used DVD-ROM for cheap... the Pioneer DVD-115GA. I originally had a plain DVD Reader (Lite-On XJ-HD166S) which was quite useless. So I basically did a simple swap of the drive and powered up the computer. The drive could open and close, and I put in a DVD and it was spinning, but no detection. Going into the BIOS, the drive was not detected. (The IDE cable connecting the DVD-ROM is connected to the CD-ROM below it and then attached to the secondary IDE port on the motherboard.) So I started all the way up and tried to scan for hardware changes in Computer Management. Still, nothing. I have the software downloaded from the Pioneer site, and that couldn't detect anything. So what else can I try to hopefully get my DVD-ROM recognized by the BIOS? Thanks in advance!

I have also tried putting the condition in the component and that didnt work either. Is there something wrong with my usage?

    More specifically - How do I reference SPContext in Web Service with [SoapDocumentMethod(OneWay=true)]? We are creating a feature that needs to run a job when a site is created. The job takes about 4 minutes to complete. So, we made a web service that we can call when the feature is activated. This works but we want it to run asynchronously now. We've found the SoapDocumentMethod's OneWay property and that would work awesomely but the SPContext is now NULL. We have our web services in the _vti_bin virtual directory so it's available in each Windows Sharepoint Services site. I was using the SPContext.Current.Web to get the site and perform the long running operation. I wanted to just fire and forget about it by returning a soap response right away and letting the process run. How can I get the current SPContext? I used to be able to do this in my web service: SPWeb mySite = SPContext.Current.Web; Can I get the same context when I have the [SoapDocumentMethod(OneWay=true)] attribute applied to my web service? Or must I recreate the SPWeb from the url?     Hi, I try to insert features on a custom google map : i use the sample code from the doc but i get a ServiceException (Internal server error) when i call the service's insert method. Here is what i do : I create a map and get the resulting MapEntry object : myMapEntry = (MapEntry) service.insert(mapUrl, myEntry); This works fine : i can see the map i created in "my maps" on google.     I'm currently developing a new language for programming in a continuous environment (compare it to electrical engineering), and I've got some ideas on a certain language construction. Let me explain the feature by explanation and then by definition; x = a | b; Where x is a variable and a and b are other variables (or static values). if(x == a) { // all references to "x" are essentially references to "a". } if(x == b) { // same but with "b" } if(x != a) { // ... } if(x == a | b) { // guaranteed that "x" is '"a" | "b"'; interacting with "x" // will interact with both "a" and "b". } // etc. In the above, all code-blocks are executed, but the "scope" changes in each block how x is interpreted. In the first block, x is guaranteed to be a: thus interacting with x inside that block will interact on a. The second and the third code-block are only equal in this situation (because not b only remains a). The last block guarantees that x is at least a or b. Further more; | is not the "bitwise or operator", but I've called it the "and/or"-operator. It's definition is: "|" = "and" | "or" (On my blog, http://cplang.wordpress.com/2009/12/19/binop-and-or/, is more (mathematical) background information on this operator. It's loosely based on sets.) I do not know if this construction already exists, so that's my question: does this language feature already exists?

  • Git. Checkout feature branch between merge commits

    Hi all It's kind weird, but I can't fulfill a pretty common operation with git. Basically what I want is to checkout a feature branch, not using it's head but using SHA id. This SHA points between merges from master branch. The problem is that all I get is just master branch without a commits from feature branch. Currently I'm trying to fix a regression introduced earlier in master branch. Just to be more descriptive, I crafted a small bash script to recreate a problem repository: #!/bin/bash rm -rf ./.git git init echo "test1" > test1.txt git add test1.txt git commit -m "test1" -a git checkout -b patches master echo "test2" > test2.txt git add test2.txt git commit -m "test2" -a git checkout master echo "test3" > test3.txt git add test3.txt git commit -m "test3" -a echo "test4" > test4.txt git add test4.txt git commit -m "test4" -a echo "test5" > test5.txt git add test5.txt git commit -m "test5" -a git checkout patches git merge master #Now how to get a branch having all commits from patches + test3.txt + test4.txt - test5.txt ??? Basically all I want is just to checkout branch "patches" with files 1-4, but not including test5.txt. Doing: git checkout [sha_where_test4.txt_entered] ... just gives a branch with test1,test3,test4, but excluding test2.txt Thanks.

  • Color Temperature in PowerPoint 2010

    I'm teaching PowerPoint 2010 and it's got some great new features. Unfortunately, one that I can't wrap my head around is the the new "Color Temperature" feature for pictures. I do understand color temperature in general (i.e. the lower the number, the "colder"/"oranger" - the higher the number, the "hotter"/"bluer"). The way PowerPoint implements it seems opposite from most other programs - like Photo Filter in Photoshop. So I need to understand what this feature is in more detail so I can explain it to my students. Does anyone know?
