• Shotwell not available in 11.10

  I had used Shotwell happily previously then updated to Natty last week. Despite Shotwell showing on the tool bar on screen, when clicked, nothing happened, and it ignored my SD card when loaded. I read all sorts of remedies and tried everything to no avail. When I next turned on the laptop, Ocelot was available so with nothing to loose, I upgraded again. Still no Shotwell. Tried all the new fixes and now atleast I have the icon pictures but nothing behind it. When I ran the command to load the log file, Shotwell loaded and all my photos are present. Exited programme, and now nothing. Can anyone tell me where I have gone wrong please.

• Why are the colors worse on Ubuntu 12.04 than on Windows 7 on my Sony Vaio E-Series?

  The colours look "lacking" and ever slightly blueish and rather washed-out and lacking in dimension. Graphics are ok - this page for example looks fine - but if I view something like a news site with high quality photos, the experience is not optimal and is noticeably inferior to Windows 7. Oddly, when I install Ubuntu as a VM on VirtualBox in Windows, the colours look as I expect them to. It's only on my dual-boot version of Ubuntu that they look wrong (not Wubi, although a previous Wubi-based installation had the same problem). Now, I have the proprietary ATI driver and I can use amdcccle to get the colours closer to what they should be, but I can't seem to do anything about colour depth. The depth settings in Xorg are all 24. I tried changing all three mentions of 24 to 32 but was forced into safety mode. Fortunately, I remembered where I'd been tinkering and got the file set back to 24.

• Use a Coffee Cup Sleeve as a Temporary Lens Hood

• Gmail Rolls Out New Compose Features

  Gmail has several new features that make it even easier to compose email messages including pop-over compositions windows (similar to the Google Chat window), contact profile pictures in the address box, and drag and drop address switching. If you’ve ever had to open two separate windows in order to continually tab back and forth so you could reference one email while composing another, you’ll certainly appreciate the new pop-over compose window that allows you to work within Gmail while keeping a small email composition window open in the corner–as seen in the screenshot above. In addition to that major change, Gmail has also introduced contact photos in the address suggestion window (making it easier than ever to make sure you’re selecting the right recipient) and the ability to drag and drop addresses between the To:, CC:, and BCC: address slots.   What good and free Social Networking Site solutions there are? I tried many options but most of them are either too complicated, too simple, or just do not work... I tried: Dolphin, DZOIC-Handshakes, elgg, Oxwall, SocialEngine, and some plugins for wp and other CMS. I don't need much, just: groups, chats, forums, profiles, PM, photos, pages, comments, search, statistics. Most of which included in pretty much every CMS out there, but not all.. So, what good solutions there are? Also I don't mind paying some money (I guess no more then $200), but I'd prefer if it was a free open source engine. Of course it should be PHP+MySQL based.

• Unable to drag brush tool in Photoshop CS5 in 12.04

  I was able to use Photoshop CS5 perfectly on Ubuntu 11.10. After upgraded to 12.04 I've noticed that when I try to use brush tool in by dragging the left mouse button I cannot get continous effect on photos. It only effects the area I click with mouse. In the screenshot all the time I was holding the left mouse button but it only affected the image once, creating dots instead of lines. At first I thought its something with Wine. I reinstalled it then deleted Photoshop in my ApplicationData folder (Windows keeps user software options in this folder). None of these worked. I tried on my laptop and this strange problem exists there too.

• Windows Phone 7 dev: C# or silverlight for a simple app?

  I'm about to hire a programmer to develop Windows Phone 7 apps. The current app that shall be developed is quite simple. The app will download content from a Web-API. There are two lists to select content. There is a single item content page. Users can rate the content and upload photos. The screens will be produced by our artist. I am pretty sure that most of the available programmers haven't touched WP7 development yet. Now the questions are: What technology is suitable for this kind of app? What technology requires less research, learning and production time? Do you already have experience of limitations of silverlight compared to C#? (I am also thinking of future projects) My guess is that silverlight programmers are more experienced in UI programming than C# coders. Do you feel the same way?

• What are some client-side sitemap generators?

  Most of the sitemap generators I've found all scan my internal files and base it on that. However using apache and htaccess I have many aliases for things for example: /brand/model/photos/ is empty directory wise, but on the web it relocates it to a zenphoto gallery using htaccess. http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ does What I need, but I'd like to have more control over it and I need it to be dynamic and run weekly or daily. Allow for specific change frequencies based on the file/directory. I also want to be able to make a "pretty" sitemap html file. Counting the photo gallery I have around 300 links, without the photo gallery more like 100. I have MySQL, PHP 5.3 installed.
