• Can I find the session ID for a user logged on to another machine?

  I want to open an application on another computer on the same network via the command line. The scenario here is that the user is in a room surrounded by about 20 computers and wants to be able to launch the same app on every computer without walking from screen to screen opening it up on each individual machine. I've discovered that I can get the basic functionality for this using PsExec as follows: psexec \\[computer] -u [username] -p [password] -d -i [SessionID] [program] For computer, username, password, and program, I'm good. Does anyone know of a way I can figure out which SessionID is assigned to a particular user logged on to a particular machine on the network? Alternately, is there a better way to go about what I'm trying to accomplish?

• Decompressing Files on an NTFS Volume from Linux

  I recently did something stupid on my dual-boot laptop, where I compressed the entire volume to make room for a Linux partition. For some reason, Windows let me compress C:\ntldr. Now I need to get it uncompressed in order for Windows to boot. Here are some of the operating restrictions I have: I do not have access to the BIOS. I cannot boot from CD/USB/floppy. (I installed Linux through PXE) It does not have network access. Is there were some way to specify that the ntfs-3g driver shouldn't compress files even if it thinks it should (if the directory is compressed) when mounting the volume? Or, is there a way to modify the attributes of a directory using ntfstools?

• Connect server to router with workstation in between?

  I have a server (9 yr old Dell with Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition) and a workstation (Laptop with Vista) which are both connected to a router. The workstation is able to access the server via web browser for testing my web development projects. Since the server is old and does not have a wireless card, I am wondering if it is possible to connect the server directly to the workstation while maintaining the ability to connect to the server from the workstation. The reason is that the computers are in a separate room from the router and I am trying to limit the amount of wires on the floor, along with trying to avoid buying more hardware (like a wireless card). • Detect damage done by virus

  Hey, this morning after I went to college a virus infected my pc without any user interaction at my end. When I came home my computer was completely frozen and infected with lots of trojans. I have not typed anything important since returning so keys cannot be logged. However I want to know exactly when my computer crashed from the time of infection to see what could potentially be done remotely by a hacker. The virus my pc was diagonosed with was "fakespypro" http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Win32%2fFakeSpypro on a fully updated windows 7 installation with firewall enabled. My computer was connected to an internal dorm room network, so probably that has had to do something with it. Any further information about how I could backtrace this virus infection or ways to discover what data might be stolen would be greatly appriciated.

• balancing loudest and quietest speaker noises

  It is hard for me to find the right volume for my computer to watch my dvd's on because it seems like most reasonable volumes become overwhelming at the loudest parts of a movie and it is hard to even make out the dialog at the quietest parts. I find I'm constantly adjusting the volume during the course of a movie. Are there ways to make the difference between the louds and the quiets not so extreme? (both computer related solutions and non-computer related solutions welcome). Like moving my speakers across the room and increasing the volume? or the opposite? Or would would the extremes be less noticeable if I used headphones? Are there movie players that might have more complex sound adjustment features? If there is a software solution out there for linux that would be great too. Thanks, Dan

• Connect to development server via switch?

  I apologize upfront if this isn't appropriate for superuser. I asked it on serverfault and was told it was too general for that site. I have a laptop with Vista and it receives it's internet connection wireless. I have an old desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition installed and it is setup as a development server with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. This works well, with the server having a static IP address. The server is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. Is it possible to disconnect the cable that is currently connecting the server and the router, then connect the server and workstation to a switch, so that I am still able to connect to the server via web browser from the workstation? I am trying to eliminate the long ethernet cable connecting the server to the router in the other room. I already have a switch, that is why I asked specifically about it. • How can I preview various Google services in Firefox?

  With iGoogle shut down I haven't been able to replicate my homepage through other services. I'm not asking for a generic replacement for iGoogle, but how to accomplish a specific use case whether through a third-party dashboard, browser extension, or some DIY solution. I need an interactive Gmail inbox, Gmail Tasks, and Google Calendar in the same Firefox tab. If hosted by a third party, they need to authenticate safely using the Google account that I am logged in with. Other widgets would be useful but I only require those Google services. I'm using Gmail itself for now but there is hardly room for the other widgets in the sidebar. Both Google Sites and igHome won't reliably load the services, especially Tasks. Netvibes requires raw login information for third-party services.

• Trigger ZFS dedup one-off scan/rededup

  I have a ZFS filesystems which has been running for some time and I recently had the opportunity to upgrade it (finally!) to the latest ZSF version. Our data doesn't scream dedup but I firmly believe based on small tests that we could gain anywhere from 5-10% of our space back for free by utilizing it. I have enabled dedup on the filesystem and new files are slowly being dedupified but the majority (95%+) of our data already exists on the filesystem. Short of moving the data off-pool and then recopying it back, is there any way to trigger a dedup scan of existing data? It doesn't have to be asynchronous or live. (And FYI there isn't enough room on the pool to copy the entire filesystem to another and then just switch the mounts.)

  Hi, all. I've got a MacBook that's about three years old (it's the first generation that had a dual core CPU), running Leopard. I've got a Comcast DVR/HD Cable box. Is there something that I can install in between these devices that will let me watch TV from the Cable box on the Mac's display? • Customize side panel in Internet Explorer 9/Windows 7

  I use Internet Explorer 9 with all the horizontal toolbars except the tab bar invisible to maximize vertical space. I have plenty of room at the side so I have the Favorites/Feeds/History panel open, usually on Favorites to replace the Favorites bar. I'd like to customize the shortcuts in this panel to display as large icons, similar to when you set the display in Windows Explorer to Large Icons and, long shot... change the backround color. The side panel does appear to be just a Windows Explorer window but it seems immune to any kind of tampering or customization, mainly because right clicking is disabled on the empty space. Changing browsers is not going to happen but can someone help out here?

• CentOS Vs Windows Server 2008

  Hi, Apologies if the question appears ambiguous, I have little experience in this area and was after some informed opinions. I am deploying a test scenario of a server/client network and need to make some choices for Server. The client will be a Windows system as it meets the requirements for the client, the server choice has more room for selection. From my experience with Linux in general and the appealing nature of open source for low cost, security etc and the availability and performance of database and web server programs I have been considering CentOS as a server choice. I have the ability to make most of the choices of what software / server packages I wish to install. This includes Active Directory (something I have no experience with). How well does this operate with Windows clients? Am I being too selective and creating unnecessary complication by setting out not to use a Windows Server OS?

• How to maximise performance in computers connected into LAN via Gigabit ethernet router?

  Our group is setting up a server (which might just be a NAS, but we're not sure yet), which shares files, so that it connects to all other computers in the room (about 10 of them). I am thinking just hooking all of them up via a gigabit router/switch. Is there anything I should watch out for, in terms of cables, connections, or the connection capabilities of each computer in the network? • Port forwarding through a client bridge

  I am having a problem with port forwarding with a client bridge. My main router is a 2wire router from AT&T using their firmware. It is a Router/Modem. In my room, there is a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT on it. I have set up the DD-WRT one as a Client bridge for my PC. I can access the internet on my computer using it but when I try and port forward, the ports stay closed. I am port forwarding on my main router (2wire) and it doesn't work. I have checked online and all I see is that I should only need to forward on the main router since the client bridge has NAT disabled, but it seems to not work that way. Any ideas?

• 'DNS server isn't responding' error in windows 7 home premium

  Hi All, I bought a brand new Dell Studio 1558 just last week. It has windows 7 home premium 64-bit installed on it. My friend who is occupying the adjacent room has a laptop with windows XP. Both of us are connecting to the same wireless router of the hotel. My friend is able to connect to the wireless network without any trouble, but when I try to connect, I get the error "DNS service isn't responding". I get this error when I run the troubleshooting option. I met two more people in the same hotel with win XP laptop and they too dont have any problem. I have gone to possibly all the forums and website but I haven't been able to fix this error :(. I have done all the basic troubleshooting but I have no luck yet. Pls help. • MacBook Pro (with DVI) to HDMI, including audio - possible?

  I have a MacBook Pro with DVI. I'd like to hook it up to my living room TV for movies and such but I want to keep it out of the way. I already have HDMI cables run to the basement where I have a cable box. Is there something I could you to connect the MBP video and audio to HDMI so I only need the one cable to the TV? I'm looking for a quality picture but I don't want to spend a ton of $. I've googled a bit, but I'm looking for some recommendations.

• Sharing soundcard to network.

  Let's suppose I have a laptop (L) and desktop PC (D), both with Windows 7 onboard. It is SB X-Fi extreme soundcard with rather good 5.1 home theater connected. But it is not comfortable to watch video sitting on the sofa from my desktop (sofa is in the center of the room and D is in the corner), even though it is 23" monitor. So I'm watching everything from the laptop. So the question - is it possible somehow to "share" soundcard from D to L, so I will watch the video from notebook and listen the sound from the 5.1? L and D are connected via wi-fi (fast enough).

• What's the fastest way to store/access large files?

  I do a lot of video editing on my Mac and need a way to store very large (30 GB) files, and don't have room on my HD. A USB/Firewire external hard drive would work, but it seems way too slow for consistently working with such large files. I've also considered buying another computer, with a large hard drive, and putting it on the same network with a shared folder. What's the fastest / most efficient way to do this? Please consider USB 2.0 speeds, hard drive read times, ethernet speeds, etc. Are there other options I should consider?

• Presentation software requires admin rights to install - any way to remove this requirement?

  I have some wireless presentation software which I use in a meeting room in order to allow end users to hold presentations here and wirelessly have their laptop screens showing on the TV on the wall. Unfortunately the .exe file requires admin rights to install therefore requiring that either the user requests temporary admin rights beforehand, I install it using my admin account or that we use a VGA/HDMI cable. Is there a way to remove the admin right requirement from a .exe or a .msi file so that it can be installed freely by any user? We are using XP for now but will be moving to 7 soon. Thanks James

  Im thinking of switching to one of the macbook pro retinas with a 256gb ssd, im making the move from a 512gb hd, which at the moment is split into a 60bg windows partition (which i dont think im going to have on my new machine) and a 440gb main partition of the main partition ive got 140gb free. So all in if i disregard the 60gb windows part ive got about 200gb free so im using 300gb, which is still a bit to much, ive had this machine 4/5 yrs so its likely to be clogged with files that i no longer need, is there a tool that i can use to view my current hd and see whats taking up the most room, so i can begin to see where i can cut down ? just for a bit of background my current machine runs osx.

• Best practices for setting lm-factor in Squid refresh patterns

  I am running a Squid (3.1) cache in front of Django. The content of the site does not change very often, so Squid gives our backend much needed breathing room. Currently, this is the refresh pattern that we are using to cache the content: refresh_pattern . 60 100% 60 We basically want to cache everything for at least an hour (and only an hour) before Squid then re-validates the content. My question is on the "100%" parameter, which sets the lm-factor. I'm not sure if setting that to 100% is doing what we want it to. The assumption was that by setting it to 100%, it would ensure that objects stay in the cache for the max cache time. Is this an incorrect assumption? What are the best practices that one should follow when setting up a refresh pattern like this?

• User reduced LVM logical volume without resizing filesystem

  I received an email yesterday that one of our users was trying to make room for a heartbeat/clustering package which requires its own partition to act as a voting disk. To do this, he attempted to reduce the size of the root partition's logical volume, and then create a new logical volume for this purpose. However, he forgot to resize the filesystem first (or include the -r switch in the command). He also forgot to unmount the root partition by running this process from a rescue cd. The system is now refusing to boot into the OS with the following error: Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt! Unexpected Inconsistency; run fsck manually. The system them drops the user into single user mode. Is it possible to rescue the filesystem, or is it hosed? Its running ext3.
