• How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • How to limit my CPU power programmatically on Windows 7?

  Whenever I run a CPU-heavy activity (like compressing a big set of files into an archive for example) my CPU switches to its full throttle (maximum frequency) and shuts down of overheat in less than a minute. Instead, I would like it to keep slowed-down slightly to do the task a bit slower but be able to reach the finish. At the same time I don't want to dim my screen brightness or adjust anything else what standard Windows power-saving system does. So how do I actually set a cap to limit my CPU power? The CPU is Core 2 Duo T7250, the OS is Windows 7 32-bit, there seem to be no BIOS settings or jumpers available to configure the frequencies.

• How can I compare effective power usage of two CPUs / CPU+Mobo+Mem combinations?

  I have this server which does mostly file sharing (with the associated storage). No serious number crunching and it isn't the firewall. My current box has a Celeron D processor (Prescott 336 2.8 GHz); and I'm considering replacing it with a Pentium D (Smithfield 805 2.66 GHz) - for reasons which do not involve performance. How can I know whether one can expect a higher or lower power consumptipn for the change? And how can I estimate the power consumption for each option?

  I have a local business directory site. I'm trying to segment my incoming traffic by page-type such that i can find out what percentage of traffic is going to zip code pages exclusively and what percentage is going to city/state level pages. I basically want to filter by URL structure to find out what percentage of total traffic zip code pages account for. The reason for doing this is to find out if Does Google Tag Manager help with this? • how did my laptop lose daylight savings time on power loss?

  it was an old laptop that may or may not have dead CMOS battery (at least it had time reset to 0 when I dusted it off). So, it was plugged into power for awhile without the main battery and the clock was correct. Then there was a power outage. When I subsequently turned it on, surprise-surprise, it had one hour off correct time. So the clock apparently kept running during the outage, but daylight savings time info vanished (from disk? where is it stored?) How come?

• Does the Instant Preview in Google webmaster tools takes Robot.txt in account?

  Is that the way to go If I want to visually see what the googlebot see? I'm trying to check a folder which I have just blocked in my robots.txt. If I fetch the folder as google bot, It fetches ok, so that doesn't tell me nothing about whether the block is working I know there's a tool to check for blocking, but it is dependent on the input of the robots.txt Therefore I've tried the Instant preview, and I don't get a preview for what the bot sees ("pre-render), so I think that means that it's because the robots.txt blocks it; however - I don't see the bot tried beforehand to access my updated robots.txt, so I'm not sure how does it know that this folder is blocked? (it does preview another new folder, that is not blocked)

• Monitor doesn't turn on the first try, is power supply failure imminent?

  I been noticing for the last couple days that when I turn on my computer and then my monitor(22inch lcd) that my monitor does not turn on. I push the "on" button and the blue light comes on but the screen is blank. I usually have to then restart my computer and then my monitor will show in the upper left hand corner a dialog bog that says "analog" and it is flickering. Then everything goes to normal. Thinking it is the power supply but at the same time the tower is a year old(it came with a power supply). So when I take that into consideration I am not sure.

• Automatically changing a power profile when a laptop (un)docks?

  I'm looking for a way to automatically change what happens when I close my laptop's lid depending on if it's in its docking station or not. In an idea world, the on-close behavior would be nothing (when docked) and sleep (when un-docked), but there only seems to be options for behavior when plugged-in and when on battery (when it's plugged in but not docked, I'd like it to sleep when closed). My initial idea would be to create a new power profile with this behavior, but I can't find a way to have it switch when docked (or for the power system to take its docked status into account at all). Any idea?

  I have a Western Digital 160GB My Book USB external hard drive (WD16001032), but I can't find its power cord (or, at least, figure out which one it is in my box of cords). It might be that only one power cord would fit, but I'm a bit cautious since I just tried one of the cords with a router and could smell electronics burning when I used an incorrect one. What voltage/amps are needed for this drive? I can't find specs on Western Digital's site. I'm assuming this is due to it being an older drive.

• USB 3.0 hub; what can it power?

  I own an Asus UX31A laptop, equipped with 2 USB 3.0 ports. I would like to connect several USB devices to one of these ports, using a USB 3.0 hub. 1) Am I correct in assuming the Asus "USB Charger+" commercial blurb corresponds to the USB 3.0 standard "Battery Charging Specification 1.2", and furthermore inferring that the laptop can deliver 1.5A through a USB port? 2) Does a powered external USB 3.0 hard drive draw on the USB power lines? 3) I would like to connect the aforementionned drive, an android phone, and a 200mA rated optical mouse to an unpowered USB 3.0 hub, itself plugged into the laptop.   Possible Duplicate: Laptop power supplies, does current matter? I'm in Colombia, South America and the power adapter on my HP Pavilion DV4-1125nr laptop died. The adapter is rated at 65W input 1.6A & output 18.5V 3.5A. A friend found me a Dell adapter rated at 65W input 1.5A & output 19.5V 3.34A. Both have center + polarities. Seems very stable and not having unusual heat problems. Do you think it is safe to use this adapter without harming my laptop?

  Hi, I'm having some problems with some CSS properties in IE8. I've tested my site in IE7, Chrome and Firefox and they work fine but IE8 is having some layout issues. I inspect the developer tool option on ie8 and I've noticed that some of the properties I set in CSS are being ignored by ie8. For example: #header { position: relative; padding: 20px; height: 100px; background:url(header.png); } In this header IE8 ignored the height property: If I inspect the element in developer tools it is missing that property and it's crushed into another line: background:url;HEIGHT: 100PX The same thing happens for floats too: #logon { float: left; text-align:right; width:20%; height: 40px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right:7px; border:0; margin:0; background: url(navgradient.gif); } This ignores the float value: background: url(navgradient.gif); FLOAT:left; What is happening here and how can I fix it?

• What AOP tools exist for doing aspect-oriented programming at the assembly language level against x8

  Looking for a tool I can use to do aspect-oriented programming at the assembly language level. For experimentation purposes, I would like the code weaver to operate native application level executable and dynamic link libraries. I have already done object-oriented AOP. I know assembly language for x86 and so forth. I would like to be able to do logging and other sorts of things using the familiar before/after/around constructs. I would like to be able to specify certain instructions or sequences/patterns of consecutive instructions as what to do a pointcut on since assembly/machine language is not exactly the most semantically rich computer language on the planet. If debugger and linker symbols are available, naturally, I would like to be able to use them to identify subroutines' entry points , branch/call/jump target addresses, symbolic data addresses, etc. I would like the ability to send notifications out to other diagnostic tools. Thus, support for sending data through connection-oriented sockets and datagrams is highly desirable. So is normal logging to files, UI, etc. This can be done using the action part of an aspect to make a function call, but then there are portability issues so the tool needs to support a flexible, well-abstracted logging/notifying mechanism with a clean, simple yet flexible. The goal is rapid-QA. The idea is to be able to share aspect source code braodly within communties as well as publicly. So, there needs to be a declarative security policy file that users can share. This insures that nothing untoward that is hidden directly or indirectly in an aspect source file slips by the execution manager. The policy file format needs to be simple to read, write, modify, understand, type-in, edit, and generate. Sort of like Java .policy files. Think the exact opposite of anything resembling XML Schema files and you get the idea. Is there such a tool in existence already?

• Building Visual Studio Setup Projects with TFS 2010 Team Build

  One of the most common complaints from people starting to use Team Build is that is doesn’t support building Microsoft’s own Setup and Deployment project (*.vdproj). When creating a default build definition that compiles a solution containing a setup project, you’ll get the following warning: The project file "MyProject.vdproj" is not supported by MSBuild and cannot be built.   This is what the problem is all about. MSBuild, that is used for compiling your projects, does not understand the proprietary vdproj format defined by Microsoft quite some time ago. Unfortunately there is no sign that this will change in the near future, in fact the setup projects has barely changed at all since they were introduced. VS 2010 brings no new features or improvements hen it comes to the setup projects. VS 2010 does include a limited version of InstallShield which promises to be more MSBuild friendly and with more or less the same features as VS setup projects. I hope to get a closer look at this installer project type soon. But, how do we go about to build a Visual Studio setup project and produce an MSI as part of a Team Build process? Well, since only one application known to man understands the vdproj projects, we will have to installa copy of Visual Studio on the build server. Sad but true. After doing this, we use the Visual Studio command line interface (devenv) to perform the build. In this post I will show how to do this by using the InvokeProcess activity directly in a build workflow template. You’ll want to run build your setup projects after you have successfully compiled the projects.   Install Visual Studio 2010 on the build server(s)   Open your build process template /remember to branch or copy the xaml file before modifying it!)   Locate the Try to Compile the Project activity   Drop an instance of the InvokeProcess activity from the toolbox onto the designer, after the Run MSBuild for Project activity   Drop an instance of the WriteBuildMessage activity inside the Handle Standard Output section. Set the Importance property to Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Client.BuildMessageImportance.High (NB: This is necessary if you want the output from devenv to show up in the build log when running the build with the default verbosity) Set the Message property to stdOutput   Drop an instance of the WriteBuildError activity to the Handle Error Output section Set the Message property to errOutput   Select the InvokeProcess activity and set the values of the parameters to:     The finished workflow should look like this:     This will generate the MSI files, but they won’t be copied to the drop location. This is because we are using devenv and not MSBuild, so we have to do this explicitly   Drop a Sequence activity somewhere after the Copy to Drop location activity.   Create a variable in the Sequence activity of type IEnumerable<String> and call it GeneratedInstallers   Drop a FindMatchingFiles activity in the sequence activity and set the properties to:     Drop a ForEach<String> activity after the FindMatchingFiles activity. Set the Value property to GeneratedInstallers   Drop an InvokeProcess activity inside the ForEach activity.  FileName: “xcopy.exe” Arguments: String.Format("""{0}"" ""{1}""", item, BuildDetail.DropLocation) The Sequence activity should look like this:     Save the build process template and check it in.   Run the build and verify that the MSI’s is built and copied to the drop location.   Note 1: One of the drawback of using devenv like this in a team build is that since all the output from the default compilations is placed in the Binaries folder, the outputs is not avaialable when devenv is invoked, which causes the whole solution to rebuild again. In TFS 2008, this was pretty simple to fix by using the CustomizableOutDir property. In TFS 2010, the same feature is not avaialble. • jQuery tools modal overlay display problem in IE6-8

  I'm trying to enable the overlay to be modal. It works perfectly fine in FireFox, but the window object is behind the mask when it becomes modal. This prevents any interaction with it and the page is actually useless. I've tried debugging this for a while and can't figure it out. • Incrementing Assembly Version in TFS Builds and its affect over Other Build Definitions

  A very common scenario while performing TFS builds is to increment version number of the assemblies. There are quite a few approaches of which I would like to share two links: Ewald Hofman’s Approach: http://www.ewaldhofman.nl/post/2010/05/13/Customize-Team-Build-2010-e28093-Part-5-Increase-AssemblyVersion.aspx#id_02e7b082-ce95-49a9-92e9-7dc88887b377 Richard Bank’s Approach : http://www.richard-banks.org/2010/07/how-to-versioning-builds-with-tfs-2010.html   Both these approaches work well, however there are scenarios where Editing and Checking–in the Assembly version information can create problems with Build Definitions meant for Continuous Integration, or gated Check-ins. You can suppress the Continuous Integration Builds while checking in the Assembly info file by just putting a comment “***NO_CI***” as specified by Ewald in his blog. However, if you have Gated Checkin in place, this can turn out to be difficult to suppress, I myself tried to suppress the Build Trigger during the check in process but things doesn’t turn out well. That’s where Richard’s solution comes as handy. Both the solutions have their own pros and cons, which I believe can only be experienced over a period of time. In case of Richard’s solution I believe that we don’t have any history of the Assembly Version Info file and when you take latest of the solution the information will be lost. If you notice closely, that suppressing the Continuous Integration (the NO_CI approach in check in comments) is a workaround provided by Microsoft, however I didn’t find anything to suppress the gated Checkin so far. Suggestions or Findings are most welcome.

• Connecting to a new installation of TFS 2010

  When the installation and configuration for TFS 2010 is completed, the next step is to connect and use TFS.  There is a Web Access component, but in order for it to serve useful you need to create a project into the Team Project Collection.  This is where Visual Studio 2010 comes in. Open Visual Studio 2010, then click on the Team Explorer Tab (red arrow pointing to it) or go to View > Team Explorer. Once there, click the Connect to Team Project toolbar button This will open up the Connect to Team Project dialog, click on Servers … On the Add/Remove Team Foundation Server dialog, click Add … On the Add Team Foundation Server, enter the name of your server and click ok. If you are prompted for credentials, provide the credentials needed. Once accepted, the server will be listed on the Add/Remove Team Foundations Server dialog, click close. You will be back at the Connect to Team Project dialog, assuming you have one Collection, click Connect. (In the event you have more than one project collection, select the appropriate collection and then click Connect) Your Team Explorer tab will look something like the image below.

• TFS Shipping Cadence

  Brian Harry has formally announced a change to the TFS shipping cadence from the traditional 2-3 years to production cycle to a more agile and refreshing minimum once in a 3 weeks cycle! The change didn’t happen over night, it was a gradual process which was greatly influenced by moving TFS to the cloud. The thinking started with trying to figure out what the team wanted.  Like people often do, the team started with what they knew and tried to evolve from there.  The team spent a few months thinking through “What if we do major releases every year and minor releases every 6 months?”,  “Major releases every 6 months, patches once a month?”, “What if we do quarterly releases – can we get the release cycle going that fast?”, etc.  The team also spent time debating what constitutes a major release VS a minor release. How much churn are customers willing to tolerate?  The team finally concluded… “When a change this big is necessary – forget where you are and just ask where you want to be and then ask what it would take to get there.” Going forward you will see, Team Foundation Service updates every 3 weeks Visual Studio Client updates quarterly (Limited to VS 2012 for now) Team Foundation Server updates more frequent than every 2 years but details still being worked out.  The team will definitely deliver one this fall.   IBM has announced May 1st, 2011 as the end of Support for Version 8 of the IBM XL C/C++ compiler currently used for Release 12 builds and patching. The target date of the switchover -- May 1st 2011 -- corresponds to when this older compiler will no longer be supported by IBM. Beginning on May 1st 2011, Oracle E-Business Suite patches for Release 12 (12.0, 12.1) on the IBM AIX on Power Systems platform will be built with Version 9 of the IBM XL C/C++ compiler.  Customers who plan to patch or upgrade their E-Business Suite R12 environments after May 1st, 2011 must meet all the new requirements prior to applying new patches or upgrades.Please review the documents below for all new requirements pertaining to the new runtime and utilities packages on IBM AIX on Power Systems.
