• UTF-8 BOM in php response to mootools xmlhttprequest

  Hi, I'm writing my first little AJAX-enabled Joomla component. I'm using mootools. I got a xmlhttprequest to contact my Joomla component, and the component returns a response - just plain text echoed by php, like echo 'Hello World!'; It's all working fine, except wireshark tells me that the response is prepended with \357\273\277\357\273\277 when it gets read by the javascript on the client side. This shows up as a little square before the response in an alert box that the script shows. I don't explicitly set the encoding on the xmlhttprequest; mootools docs say that it defaults to UTF8. What's the right way to handle this? Should I be setting the encoding on the request? Mime type? Should the javascript get rid of it? I'm not planning to have any characters requiring UTF8 in the response, so using plain old ascii would be ok for me too. Thanks

  In next weeks probably I will have some little FPGA to play with. I have a programmer background (C, C++, Java mostly) and some (very) limited experience in electronics. What are the best tools to know if you want to develop on FPGAs? What are the best languages to study? (what HW description languages?) Have you some examples of little "toy projects" that can be interesting, easy, and "eye-opener"? Thanks in advance. Edit: More details: if I understood correctly, the device I will be playing on will have an ARM core (no idea which one) and a 300k gates FPGA I'm looking specifically at some Linux free sw / open source tools...

• Programming related name for a kitten? [closed]

  I am a programmer and I just got my first kitten. A Google search for nerdy/geeky cat names was unimpressive. She's a little black kitten with a very courageous and adventurous attitude! She has a little light gray spot on her chest which might turn white with time. Here she is on my Flickr Which name would you suggest? Which of these do you like? It should be something short that has a couple contrasting sounds so it stands out a bit when you say it. • UITextView on iPad INCREDIBLY Slow

  I have an NSMutableArray of custom views (that are pretty much 1 UITextView and 1 UILabel with a custom back ground image), these are created as they are need (I start with 2 (though the first one is only 2 UITextFields and the other is normal) of these). Now my issue here seems to be this: as soon as I try to edit any UITextView past the one in the 2nd view, it starts to run incredibly slow, not the app, just the textview. For example, as I type, the little blinky guy lags behind the text and when I click to copy/paste/cut/etc you can see the little balloon fly in from the upper left corner every time. I have run the static analyzer for leaks and come up with nothing and run it alongside some other the testing software in XCode and it does not appear to have any reason for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• IAR Embedded Workbench MSP430 and *.lib files linking

  I was assuming that it was a really simple task but I did not find anything relevant or my mistake. So putting my problem here i.e. I have some project for MSP430 which is actually in code composer studio. I have to run this whole code into IAR embedded workbench now. There are some library files(*.lib) that are also provided with the project and that should have to be linked to build the project. After little modifications code is compiling fine but I am unable to link the libraries and getting linker errors. I worked on IAR with avr but very very little just to test some sample codes. I did not find the option where to mention these library names and their respective paths. I checked out the linker tab but I am not getting any clue to link these .lib files with project.

• How do I write to a file and print to a terminal cuncurrently in Unix?

  I have a little bash function to log my Macports outputs to a file (since installs often spew little tidbits that are easy to lose in terminal noise), then I just cat the file to the terminal: function porti { command sudo port install $@ >> $1.log 2>&1; cat $1.log } Is there a way to do this concurrently? I don't care about it being in Bash, that's just how I started it. BTW I pass $@ to install but only $1 for the file name so that I can do something like: porti git-gore +bash_completion and only get the file git-core.log however someone else might prefer to include variants in the file name ...

  I have a little problem that involves modelling a state machine. I have managed to do a little bit of knowledge engineering and 'reverse engineer' a set of primitive deterministic rules that determine state as well as state transitions. I would like to know what the best practises are regarding: How to rigorously test my states and state transitions to make sure that the system cannot end up in an undeetermined state. How to enforce state transition requirements (for example, it should be impossible to go directly from stateFoo to StateFooBar, i.e. to embue each state with 'knowlege' about the states it can transition to. Ideally, I would like to use clean, pattern based design, with templates wherever possible. I do need somewhere to start though and I would be grateful for any pointers (no pun intended), that are sent my way.

• Recursive FTP directory listing in shell/bash with a single session (using cURL or ftp)

  I am writing a little shellscript that needs to go through all folders and files on an ftp server (recursively). So far everything works fine using cURL - but it's pretty slow, becuase cURL starts a new session for every command. So for 500 directories, cURL preforms 500 logins. Does anybody know, whether I can stay logged in using cURL (this would be my favourite solution) or how I can use ftp with only one session in a shell script? I know how to execute a set of ftp commands and retrieve the response, but for the recursive listing, it has to be a little more dynamic... Thanks for your help!

  Hi, I’m farely new to Wordpress but are working on putting a page together which has a very simple purpose. I’m creating it for a customer with little or none IT experience so I want to create a user he can use to login and edit his pages – and nothing more. No settings, no comments, no posts, no links, no nothing, just create, delete and edit pages and maybe edit his own profile or at least his E-mail and password. I can see that wordpress has some predefined roles for users but none of them completely does what I want and they either has to little or to many rights. I’ve been looking at the wordpress page http://codex.wordpress.org/Roles_and_Capabilities but can’t seem to get a clear answer.   If you were going to hire a programmer to work for/with you, what level of CS education would you prefer them to have and why? This assumes all other things are equal which, of course, they never are in real life. Self taught? Bachelor's? Masters? PHD? The important part of the answer is why, not the level. I'm looking for how important people think a Computer Science education really is and if one can go too far. A little clarification: To make things a little more even, assume you're hiring them without a lot of work experience. Obviously having a higher education is of less value the farther you are from graduation.

My current environment is: Ruby 1.9.1 Rake 0.8.7 Albacore 0.1.4 The problem is that as of now all my rake build throw a funny little exception: undefined method 'push' for #<Enumerator:0x???????> So far I have traced the problem to albacore msbuild.rb line 38 and 26. To be honest I just don't have a clue why this is happening. • Cleaning up nasty characters in PHP

  Hi folks, Got a little issue where my client is pasting in content from Word into my little text editor in a CMS. The double quotes are coming back encoded in what looks like some form of UTF. Any ideas if I can strip/replace these using PHP when they get displayed out of my mySQL table. • WPF/MVVM - should we create a different Class for each ViewModel ?

  I'm attempting the example from the excellent "How Do I" video for MVVM by Todd Miranda found in MSDN. I'm trying to adapt the example for my learning purpose. In the example, he has a ViewModel called EmployeeListViewModel. Now if I want to include Departments, should I create another ViewModel such as DepartmentListViewModel? The example has EmployeeRepository as the Data Source. In my case, I'm trying to use an Entity object as the datasource (Employees.edmx in Model folder and EmployeeRepository.cs in DataAccess folder). If I want to display the list of Departments, should I create a separate class called DepartmentRepository and put all department related method definitions there? What if I want to retrieve the employee name and their department's name together? Where should I place the methods for this? I'm very new to WPF and MVVM and please let me know if any of the above needs to be re-phrased. Thank you for all the help.

For example I have an event handler for some google maps stuff that is only called on 1 single page, I have some validation stuff for my contact page etc etc. My question, is how best to organise this code - given that each page only requires very little code but its different and specific per page? • IAR Embedded Workbench - setting endian-ness of variable

  I'm using IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM (ARM7TDMI-S) and the majority of my work is done using little-endian format. However, I saw in the manual that I can do something like : __big_endian int i, j; to declare those two variables as big endian (while the rest of the app as little endian). This seems like a fantastic feature, but when I try to compile, I always get the errror: Error[Pa002]: the type attribute "__big_endian" is not allowed on this declaration. The big endian line above is copied directly from the manual, but it does not work. This is a great feature of the compiler and would make life a big easier. Any ideas how to get it working? I have my language conformance set to 'Allow IAR extensions' on the C/C++ Compiler options tab on the IDE options.

  I am working with a team that works on a very large software project, we have tons of Documentation that is written in MS WORD format with nohyperlinked indexes, no search ability. Everyday we waste our time trying to find the exact document or reference. I was thinking if there was way or even a professional tool that would convert all this into a wiki format and maybe with a little manual (painful) help be organised into something that improves the accessibility. I use Google Desktop Search to make my life a little easier but its not the best solution I just want to know if any of you faced similar problems and possible solutions to this issue.

  Being a CS student I've had to take a course in basic software engineering. I was a little curious to find such elaborate "software development processes", like the spiral model, the waterfall model, et cetera. Some of these methodologies seem a little antiquated to me and, after speaking with several employed developers, I can't seem to find anyone who actually adheres to these models. Does anyone here have experience working under the guidance of these models? Were they useful to you and your team during the development of your product? Or are these models just some way to communicate a sense of progression to interested parties outside of the development team?

• Is a successor for TeX/LaTeX in sight?

  TeX/LaTeX is great, I use it in many ways. Some of it's advantages are: it uses text files, this way the input-files can be diffed and many tools exist to work with text it is very flexible it has a stable layout: if I change something at the start of the document, it doesn't affect other things at the end of the document it has many extensions to reach different goals (a successor would start without extensions, but would have a good extension-system) you can use standard build control tools to support complicated documents (thanks dmckee) you can encapsulate solutions and copy&paste them to new documents or send them to others to learn from (thanks dmckee) But on the other hand some little things are not so good: it is hard to learn at the beginning it is complicated to control position of images a few things are a little counter-intuitive sometimes you have to type too much (begin{itemize} ... \end{itemize}) So, does there exist a successor/alternative to LaTeX or at least is some hot candidate for an alternative in development. A real successor/good alternative would keep the advantages and fix the disadvantages, or at least some of them.

  Since a long time ago, when I found out about the W3C Validator, I made sure every HTML document I made was valid HTML. However, I think sometimes it just isn't necessary to waste time making it valid. Of course, for actual Internet pages may be important, but is making pages on an Intranet, or even little front-ends that are used with other programs, when the HTML page renders correctly in the most used browsers (not necessarily counting IE 6 and 7). I think I'm mostly talking about little improvements over code, such as wrapping every shown element of the page on <p> or <div> tags.

• iPhoneOS SDK - Remove Corner Rounding from views (iPad problem)

  Hi Guys This might be a little bit picky, but in the iPad SplitViewController setup, there are 2 views. Each of the views has a very small black corner rounding. (This is probably the same with iPhone apps too). This rounding is visible in the image below. What I would like to do is remove the black rounding, so the UI doesnt get these two little bumps along the bottom. Has anyone done this, or know how to? -Its surely possible.
