• Single static HTML file: how can I serve it efficiently?

  Good afternoon. I have a domain and server that I've procured for non-HTML services. Should anyone stumble across port 80 of this server, I'd like to serve them a page explaining what the domain & server is for, instead of just 404'ing them. How can I serve one small, static, independent (i.e.: no images or CSS) HTML file, with a minimum of effort (meaning both a smooth setup for me, and minimum CPU expense). The server contains an untouched installation of ArchLinux, and I'm open to solutions in any language. (Note: I am a slight newbie when it comes to this, so forgive me if this question seems trivial or obvious.) Thank you.

• Graphics glitches in Visual Studio 2010

  I'm having graphics issues with Visual Studio 2010. When I open a solution only part of the UI renders. Entire sections like the solution explorer will be missing. This only happens after I've had Visual Studio running for a while and have opened/closed a variety of solutions. It "feels" like some sort of a GDI handle leak because the problem goes away once I reboot. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate - 64 bit. I've updated my graphics drivers, installed the latest patches, etc. I can't find any postings about this on stackoverflow or doing a variety of Google searches. Any ideas?

• Memcachedb Versus MongoDB Versus CouchDB in terms of file based caching solution?

  We need a caching solution that essentially caches data (text files) anywhere from 3 days up to a week based on user preferences and criteria. In this case memory based caching does not make sense to us. We were referred to MemcacheDB however I also thought of some NO SQL solutions. Our current application uses RDMS (MYSQL) and I guess it makes sense to use MemcacheDB however NOSQL does appeal as it is something more on the horizon. However we have not deployed a production level application under NOSQL and the beta stuff does not settle well with management/investors. Any how what are your thoughts and how would you address it? • Problem with Juggernaut and transparent wmode in Adobe AIR

  Hi, I am trying to use juggernaut in Adobe AIR application, however the big issue with this is that the juggernaut flash file should have wmode parameter set to 'transparent'. This is a bit of a problem for juggernaut because it seems that it doesn't work with that parameter included. The interesting part is that it is working under Linux on all browsers and in air application, but on Windows it's working only with Safari all other browsers including the AIR application are not even connecting to the juggernaut server. So the question is, what is the cause of this and if anyone had similar problem I would be interested to hear about solutions or workarounds. Thanks, Peco

  Hi, I have a table similar to this: LogId RefId Entered ================================== 1 1 2010-12-01 2 1 2010-12-04 3 2 2010-12-01 4 2 2010-12-06 5 3 2010-12-01 6 1 2010-12-10 7 3 2010-12-05 8 4 2010-12-01 Here, LogId is unique; For each RefId, there are multiple entries with timestamp. What I want to extract is LogId for each latest RefId. I tried solutions from this link:http://stackoverflow.com/questions/121387/sql-fetch-the-row-which-has-the-max-value-for-a-column.   I'm looking for a concise and functional style way to apply a function to one element of a tuple and return the new tuple, in Python. For example, for the following input: inp = ("hello", "my", "friend") I would like to be able to get the following output: out = ("hello", "MY", "friend") I came up with two solutions which I'm not satisfied with. One uses a higher-order function. def apply_at(arr, func, i): return arr[0:i] + [func(arr[i])] + arr[i+1:] apply_at(inp, lambda x: x.upper(), 1) One uses list comprehensions (this one assumes the length of the tuple is known). [(a,b.upper(),c) for a,b,c in [inp]][0] Is there a better way? Thanks!

• How do I generate (and label) a random integer with python 3.2?

  Okay, so I'm admittedly a newbie to programming, but I can't determine how to get python v3.2 to generate a random positive integer between parameters I've given it. Just so you can understand the context, I'm trying to create a guessing-game where the user inputs parameters (say 1 to 50), and the computer generates a random number between the given numbers. The user would then have to guess the value that the computer has chosen. I've searched long and hard, but all of the solutions I can find only tell one how to get earlier versions of python to generate a random integer. As near as I can tell, v.3.2 changed how to generate and label a random integer. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

• PHP Captcha without session

  Ok, here is an issue: in the project i'm working on, we can't rely on server-side sessions for any functionality. The problem is that common captcha solutions from preventing robotic submits require session to store the string to match captcha against. The question is - is there any way to solve the problem without using sessions? What comes to my mind - is serving hidden form field, containing some hash, along with captcha input field, so that server then can match these two values together. But how can we make this method secure, so that it couldn't be used to break captcha easily.

• Visual Studio 2008, MSBuild: "replacement" projects

  Hello, My solution has a library project which needs a special environment to be built (lots of external libraries and tools)... but it is not vital to our application. We'd like to avoid installing these tools when not necessary (most of our developers work on other parts of code). We have created another project which has the same API, but has an empty implementation and is compilable without those external tools. I'd like to be able to easily switch between those projects and still get all the references in other projects correct. I don't know VS/MSBuild very well, but willing to learn whatever is necessary. Is it possible? I am looking for ideas... We're using Subversion, and solutions involving some hacks inside VCS are also welcome.

• What should I read to improve my C++ style

  I was developing for quite long time already on C/C++ (mostly C, which makes style poorer). So, I know how to use it. However, quite often I stuck with style decisions like: - should I return error code here, throw exceptions, return error through a parameter - should I have all this stuff in constructor or should I create separate init function for that. and so on. Any solutions WILL work. However, each of them has cons and pros, which I know and most importantly which I don't know. It would be very nice to read something regarding overall C++ development style, coding practices and so forth. What do you recommend?

  I was tasked to conduct my first interview and would like to pose my question to this world for both their feedback on my question and also on their solutions. Question: I have a legacy system with users and files, the info of all files pertaining to a user are stored on a flat file. I want to upgrade this system by storing all info on a db, design tables, and create a C# system that will populate the new db as well as ftp the files to a new path. Define the desgin consideration and develop a prototype. Note: We are looking more for what design one would use and why rather than code that compiles. • Urls parameters doesn't encoding correctly!

  I'am using asp.net mvc version 1.0 and I've a problem with some parameter in a url! My url is look like so(http://localhost:2282/Tags/PostList/c#) routes.MapRoute( "TagsRoute", "Tags/PostList/{tag}", new { controller="Tags",Action="PostList",tag = "" } ); In effect the problem is that tag paramter isn't encoding and so simbol # is ignored! I am using an actionlink but maybe with version 1.0 isn't encoding parameter directly! <%=Html.ActionLink(itemtags.Tags.TagName, "PostList","Tags", new { tag = itemtags.Tags.TagName }, new { style = "color:red;" })%> With this actionlink only whitespace are encoding correctly, infact asp.net mvc become asp.net%20mvc and it work fine! But c# isn't encoding :( So I try to use Server.UrlEncode, and in effect it happen some stuff!!! Infact c# became c%2523 but it isn't correct again because hexadecimal of # is %23! Have you some solutions???? Route Contraints? Thanks

• Is there a way to bring an application's GUI to the current desktop?

  Background: Started a fair amount of work before realizing that a Windows Service cannot start an app with a GUI that displays without potential problems. The proper solution of separating the GUI of the app to be started is non-trivial, so I'm trying to think of alternative solutions. There is a GUI to manage the service that is a separate executable, but the process to be launched (actually multiple instances of it) has its own GUI that needs to be shown. It doesn't need to be made visible by the service itself, but it needs to be at least able to be made visible by another process with a visible GUI. The Windows User that is running the service and that needs to see the GUI of the launched process is the same and known at install time. Is there some way to accomplish this or is it back to the drawing board? Also both the service and the app to launch are both our code and modifiable.

• How do you run your unit tests? Compiler flags? Static libraries?

  I'm just getting started with TDD and am curious as to what approaches others take to run their tests. For reference, I am using the google testing framework, but I believe the question is applicable to most other testing frameworks and to languages other than C/C++. My general approach so far has been to do either one of three things: Write the majority of the application in a static library, then create two executables. One executable is the application itself, while the other is the test runner with all of the tests. Both link to the static library. Embed the testing code directly into the application itself, and enable or disable the testing code using compiler flags. This is probably the best approach I've used so far, but clutters up the code a bit. Embed the testing code directly into the application itself, and, given certain command-line switches either run the application itself or run the tests embedded in the application. None of these solutions are particularly elegant... How do you do it?

  Given two strings S and T of same length. Given a set of replacement rules, that find substring A in S and replace it with string B. A and B have the same length. Is there a sequence of rule application, such that it make string S into string T? I believe there is no better way to answer this than try every single rule in every single state. Which would be exponential time. But I don't know if there are better solutions to it.

• Find Date From Non Contiguous Ranges

  I am looking to find an best way to find a date from date ranges that may or may not be contiguous (I am trying to avoid a cursor, or a heavy function if possible). Lets say I have hotel guests that come and go (check in, check out). I want to find the date that a certain guest stayed their 45th night with us. The database we use records the data as so: Create Table #GuestLog( ClientId int, StartDate DateTime, EndDate DateTime) Here is some data Insert Into #GuestLog Values(1, '01/01/2010', '01/10/2010') Insert Into #GuestLog Values(1, '01/16/2010', '01/29/2010') Insert Into #GuestLog Values(1, '02/13/2010', '02/26/2010') Insert Into #GuestLog Values(1, '04/05/2010', '06/01/2010') Insert Into #GuestLog Values(1, '07/01/2010', '07/21/2010') So far I can only think of solutions that involve functions with temp tables and crazy stuff like that, I feel like I'm over thinking it. • [0-9a-zA-Z]* string expressed with primes or prime-factorization-style way to break it into parts?

  Suppose a string consists of numbers and alphabets. You want to break it into parts, an analogy is primes' factorization, but how can you do similar thing with strings [0-9a-zA-Z]* or even with arbitrary strings? I could express it in alphabets and such things with octal values and then prime-factorize it but then I need to keep track of places where I had the non-numbers things. Is there some simple way to do it? I am looking for simple succinct solutions and don't want too much side-effects. [Update] mvds has the correct idea, to change the base, how would you implement it?

• Java data structure to use with Hibernate to store unknown number of parameters?

  Following problem: I want to render a news stream of short messages based on localized texts. In various places of these messages I have to insert parameters to "customize" them. I guess you know what I mean ;) My question probably falls into the "Which is the best style to do it?" category: How would you store these parameters (they may be Strings and Numbers that need to be formatted according to Locale) in the database? I'm using Hibernate to do the ORM and I can think of the following solutions: build a combined String and save it as such (ugly and hard to maintain I think) do some kind of fancy normalization and and make every parameter a single row on the database (clean I guess, but a performance nightmare) Put the params into an Array, Map or other Java data structure and save it in binary format (probably causes a lot of overhead size-wise) I tend towards option #3 but I'm afraid that it might be to costly in terms of size in the database. What do you think?

• Google Translate set default language

  Maybe this has an obvious solution that I'm overlooking, but I can't seem to find the correct parameter to put in to make this happen. Using the Google Translate widget on a site, I need to set the default language that the user sees when entering the site, even though the site is english. function googleTranslateElementInit() { new google.translate.TranslateElement({ pageLanguage: 'en' }, 'google_translate_element'); } I've tried adding: defaultLanguage: 'fr' and tried: targetLanguage: 'fr' I did find some nice jQuery solutions, but didn't want to bypass this if it was an easy fix. • Return popupmenu selection in MATLAB using one line of code

  I have a GUI which uses a selection from a popupmenu in another callback. Is there a way to return the selected value of the popupmenu in only one line without creating any temporary variables? I've tried several solutions, but I've only managed two lines with one temporary variable: Three lines: list=get(handles.popupmenu1,'String'); val=get(handles.popupmenu1,'Value'); str=list{val}; Two lines: temp=get(handles.popupmenu1,{'String','Value'}); str=temp{1}{temp{2}}; Can anyone shave it down to one? PS, It's a dynamic menu, so I can't just use get(handles.popupmenu1,'Value') and ignore the string component altogether.)

  I am going to write an application that uses QT4 (with C++ or python it isnt important in that moment). One of functionality is "Showing all items in database". One item has a Title, author, description and photo (constant size) And there could be very many items. Let's say 400. There won't be enough space to show'em all at once time. One row will have 200px, so i need at most 4 for once time. How to paginate them? I have no idea. I can use limit and offset in SQL queries, but how to tell window: "that's 5th page"? Any solutions?
