• Multicast in private LAN with different subnets

  after i read Multicast IP Addresses and Multicast accross the subnets I am confused. Configuration: I have two devices in the same network. They may not be in the same Subnet, but always in the same physical network (beyond the same router, switch etc.) I want to communicate across IP multicast either 224.x.x.x or 239.x.x.x may be more fitting because we want it local, not beyond of forward through the router. Can one machine be the receiver and the other machine sender of the same multicast address? and can the receiving machine send an answer to the sending machine?

  i have opened this thread because i upgraded to ubuntu 12.10 beta (kernel 3.5) and i have problem with vmware workstation 9: "Unable to change virtual machine power state: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to" does anyone got the same problem? Clean install of ubuntu 12.10 (daily build) installed vmware 9 and patched but not working, my laptop is a Lenovo T420 with Nvidia Optimus Technology. i can't patch correctly and get the thinks be builded correctly, my configuration is ubuntu 12.10 fresh installation vmware workstation 9 fresh install on top of a lenovo thikpad t420 with nvidia optimus video card. have a problems.. this message is show whem i try to apply the patch.. # Stopping VMware services: VMware Authentication Daemon done At least one instance of VMware VMX is still running.   I'm strugling to install rgdal library on Ubuntu 12.10. Installation from within R results in error: Error: gdal-config not found The gdal-config script distributed with GDAL could not be found. If you have not installed the GDAL libraries, you can download the source from http://www.gdal.org/ If you have installed the GDAL libraries, then make sure that gdal-config is in your path. I activated nvidia_current and nvidia_current_updates from additional drivers 2.) sudo nvidia-xconfig 3.) then reboot Following these steps I got following errors 1.) my resolution is 640x480...(there is no option of 1366x768 in display...previously there was 1366x768 when nvidia-xconfig command was not entered) 2.) when I open nvidia-settings it shows me following error "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root) and restart the X server." Problem need to be solved 1.) Change resolution to 1366x768 2.) Answer by Andy Hall, Product Management Director, Oracle Desktop Virtualization: There are a number of ways to do this, with pros and cons for each. The most reliable approach is to Export and Import virtual machines: From the VirtualBox manager, simply use the File…Export appliance menu and follow the wizard's lead. Move the resulting file(s) to the destination machine; and Import the VM into VirtualBox. This method will take longer and use more disk space than other methods because the configuration files and virtual hard drives are converted into an industry standard format (.ova or .ovf). But an advantage of this approach is that the creator of the virtual appliance can add a license which the importer will see and click-to-accept at import time. • Internal Mic not working on Dell Adamo 13

  So I'm using Elementary Luna Beta (based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) on a spare HDD after successfully using Jupiter release (based on 10.10) for many years. In Jupiter I had my internal mic work out of the box and with Skype installed from deb it was all setup without having to step foot inside the terminal. In Luna Beta the internal mic is not recognised by the OS and so also not recognised by Skype. I believe the hardware is this (from sudo lshw): *-multimedia description: Audio device product: 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 1b bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0 version: 03 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0 resources: irq:46 memory:f8600000-f8603fff As well as this I ran cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec which gave me: Codec: IDT 92HD73C1X5 Codec: Intel Cantiga HDMI How do I tweak Luna to get this hardware working properly? I'm able to switch out my Luna HDD with the Jupiter HDD to help troubleshoot what the differences are between the two and why the more recent OS can't find / use the mic correctly. • Can't access DD-WRT set in DHCP forwarder

  This might sound amazingly stupid but I have a DD-WRT (micro) router that I placed in my network to act as a switch and as a WAP while relying on my cable modem to be the DHCP server. In my attempts to get the configuration right I put the router into DHCP forwarder which then made everything work correctly. The problem is now I can't seem to connect to the router in any fashion to add mac addresses to the WAP access list. Is there something I'm missing or do I need to try a hard reset on it and reconfigure everything?

• When not to use Spring to instantiate a bean?

  I am trying to understand what would be the correct usage of Spring. Not syntactically, but in term of its purpose. If one is using Spring, then should Spring code replace all bean instantiation code? When to use or when not to use Spring, to instantiate a bean? May be the following code sample will help in you understanding my dilemma: List<ClassA> caList = new ArrayList<ClassA>(); for (String name : nameList) { ClassA ca = new ClassA(); ca.setName(name); caList.add(ca); } If I configure Spring it becomes something like: List<ClassA> caList = new ArrayList<ClassA>(); for (String name : nameList) { ClassA ca = (ClassA)SomeContext.getBean(BeanLookupConstants.CLASS_A); ca.setName(name); caList.add(ca); } I personally think using Spring here is an unnecessary overhead, because The code the simpler to read/understand. It isn't really a good place for Dependency Injection as I am not expecting that there will be multiple/varied implementation of ClassA, that I would like freedom to replace using Spring configuration at a later point in time. Am I thinking correct? If not, where am I going wrong?

• CheckMemoryAllocationGame Sample

  Many times I’ve found myself wondering how much GC memory some operation allocates. This is primarily in the context of XNA games due to the desire to avoid generating garbage and thus triggering a GC collection. Many times I’ve written simple programs to check allocations. I did it again recently. It occurred to me that many XNA developers find themselves asking this question from time to time. So I cleaned up my sample and published it on my website. Feel free to download it and put it to use. It’s rather thoroughly commented. The location where you insert the code you wish to check is in the Update method found in Game1.cs. The default that I put in is a line of code that generates a new Guid using Guid.NewGuid (which, if you’re curious, does not create any heap allocations). Read all of the comments in the Update method (at the very least) to make sure that your code is measured properly. It’s important to make sure that you meaningfully reference any thing you create after the second call to get the memory or else (in Release configuration at least) you will likely get incorrect results. Anyway, it should make sense when you read the comments and if not, feel free to post a comment here or ask me on Twitter.   I am using Juniper J-series routers to emulate a small telco and VPN customer.I need to use OSPF so that the path to each internal subnet is propogated to all PE nodes.The network topology is given below. To achieve this I am planning to run the following commands in UOW-TAU and UOW-HAM. set protocols ospf area 0.0.0.0 interface ge-0/0/0 set protocols ospf area 0.0.0.0 interface lo0.0 Do I need to do any additional configuration in TAU-PE1 and HAM-PE1 routers for it to receive the OSPF paths.? • IBM storage ds3400 Cant connect to management using fiber

  i have a problem with a DS3400 IBM storage system we bought a few years back. when i try to manage the storage using its IBM storage management i cant find it using automatic detection even though its connected directly using the fiber and i can see the Logical drives connected and working properly. when i tried to connect the two management Ethernet wires and manage the storage directly by entering the IP address manually i am able to connect however after i make several changes to the controller configuration one of the controllers stops responding and i am not able to ping it directly (since you cant make any changes without being connected to both controllers this is a problem) whats more bizarre is that when i change the IP of the controller that doesn't respond it starts working .. i have found some articles over the web explaining stuff about LUN31 being missing and causing similar problems however all my attempts to manually configure it failed . *link to an example http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5075711 in short im trying to get my storage to appear in the storage manager when directly connected using only the fiber cable directly attached. thanks in advance

• How to configure nginx to serve static contents from RAM?

  I want to set up nginx as my web server. I want to have image files cached in the memory (RAM) rather then disk. I am serving a small page and want few images always served from RAM. I dont wish to use varnish (or any other such tools) for this as I believe nginx has a capability to cache contents into RAM. I am not sure as how may I configure nginx for this? I did try few combinations but they didn't work. nginx uses disk all the time to get images. For example, when I tried apache benchmark to test with following command - ab -c 500 -n 1000 http://localhost/banner.jpg I get following error - socket: Too many open files (24) I guess this means nginx is trying to open to many files simultaneously from the disk and OS is not allowing this operation. • Unable to record sound from web browser (firefox / chromium ) using recordmydesktop

  I have to do some screencast tutorials and i am using recordmydesktop with gtk frontend to do it. I need to record also the sound and here is where i have found the problem. It took me some time, but now I can record the sound from almost every application in my desktop ... almost. I need to capture some sound from a web application using java, but when i load the page nothing appears in the playback tab of pavucontrol. I think this is the problem, because if there is no sound stream i think the recordmydesktop program thinks there is no sound to record ... the funny thing is that I can ear the sound in my speakers! I have tried with Firefox and Chromium with no success. Although I have been able to record youtube videos without problem, so it seems that java is the key here. Any suggestion or idea? P.S.: I am using Ubuntu 11.10 with this configuration. ( if more information is needed please let me know) sight i cannot post images ... so I have an audigy2 sound card using Analog Stereo Output profile. • mod_access for lighttpd causes a 403 error for all POST requests

  I have found on my debian server that running the lighttpd module mod_access is causing the server to response with a 403 to all POST requests. It's very odd as I have two servers, one is running as I'd expect and the other keeps returning these 403's. They are running identical configs for lighttpd and php. My lighttpd.conf is: https://gist.github.com/4269500 There is also one other custom conf: https://gist.github.com/4269508 I've opened up the servers for requests until I get this fixed, the server that works is http://mercury.isitup.org/ and the one that fails is http://venus.isitup.org/. After working out that disabling mod_access resolves the problem I greped all my lighttpd configs for uses of it (docs). Disabling each line I found didn't help, leading me to think this is perhaps some default behaviour (or bug?)... Has anyone come across this before or know what configuration value I've got wrong? • MySQL keeps crashing OS server.. Please help adjust my.ini!

  I have MySQL 5.0 installed on a Windows 2008 machine (3GB RAM). My server crashes on a regular basis (almost once a day) with this error: Changed limits: max_open_files: 2048 max_connections: 800 table_cache: 619 I did not use the heavy InnoDB .ini file, although I am rethinking that I should have? I am worried that big configuration changes will make my current sites stop working. What should I do? • Using symbolic links with git

  I used to have my system configuration files all in one directory for better management but now i need to use some version control on it. But the problem is that git doesn't understand symbolic links that point to outside of the repository, and i can't invert the role ( having the real files on the repository and the symbolic links on their proper path ) since some files are read before the kernel loads. I think that I can use unison to sync the files in the repo and and the their paths, but it's just not practical. And hard links will probably be broken. Any idea ?

  If you facing the issue that the web Analytics Reports in SharePoint 2010 Central Administration is not updating data. When you go to your site > site settings > Site Web Analytics reports or Site Collection Analytics reports  You get old data as in the ribbon displayed "Data Last Updated: 12/13/2010 2:00:20 AM" Please insure that the following things are covered: Insure that Usage and Data Health Data Collection service is configured correctly. Log Collection Schedule is configured correctly Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation Usage Data Import and Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Usage Data Processing Timer jobs are configured to run at regular intervals One last important Timer job is the Web Analytics Trigger Workflows Timer Job insure that this timer job is enabled and scheduled to run at regular intervals (for each site that you need analytics for). After you have insured that the web analytics service configuration is working fine and the Usage Data Import job is importing the *.usage files from the ULS LOGS folder into the WSS_Logging database, and that all the required timer jobs are running as expected… wait for a day for the report to get updated… the report gets updated automatically at 2:00 am in the morning… and i could not find a way to control the schedule for this report update job. So be sure to wait for a day before giving up :)

• racoon-tool doesn't generate full racoon.conf file in /var/lib/racoon/racoon.conf

  I am using ipsec-tools/racoon to create my VPN. I am using racoon-tool to configure racoon.conf but when I run racoon-tool reload it only generates the first section - Global items. When I run racoon-tool I get: # racoon-tool reload Loading SAD and SPD... SAD and SPD loaded. Configuring racoon...done. This is the entire file /var/lib/racoon/racoon.conf # # Racoon configuration for Samuel # Generated on Wed Jan 5 21:31:49 2011 by racoon-tool # # # Global items # path pre_shared_key "/etc/racoon/psk.txt"; path certificate "/etc/racoon/certs"; log debug; I cannot find anywhere a solution as to why this is happening. In all cases, use the lowest possible subnet numbers. Subnet zero is allowed. • Using Supervisord, how can I start a brand new worker via supervisorctl without restarting other workers?

  Let's say I have a number of existing workers running in supervisord. I want to add a new worker to the group as well as start the new worker. I perform the following steps: I modify the file /etc/supervisor/supervisord.conf and add the new worker config Back on the command line, I enter sudo supervisorctl I run reread to read the new configuration file settings. Attempting to run start workers:exampleWorkerName gives the error workers:"exampleWorkerName": ERROR (no such process) So, my question is, how can I start this new worker process without affecting my other existing workers? I'd rather not perform a supervisorctl reload or /etc/init.d/supervisord restart command.

So here it is again, reformulated. On the lxml site they suggest that it is possible to have both lxml2 and the newest version of lxml on ubuntu: Using lxml with python-libxml2 If you want to use lxml together with the official libxml2 Python bindings (maybe because one of your dependencies uses it), you must build lxml statically. Otherwise, the two packages will interfere in places where the libxml2 library requires global configuration, which can have any kind of effect from disappearing functionality to crashes in either of the two. To get a static build, either pass the --static-deps option to the setup.py script, or run pip with the STATIC_DEPS or STATICBUILD environment variable set to true, i.e. STATIC_DEPS=true pip install lxml The STATICBUILD environment variable is handled equivalently to the STATIC_DEPS variable, but is used by some other extension packages, too. I am generally confused about how pip packages and ubuntu packages get along, so I hesitate to run STATIC_DEPS=true pip install lxml. Will it damage/confuse my installed lxml2 package? The suggestion on SO was to install the new lxml in a virtualenv. That looks like the best way to go, but the lxml site is suggesting that a dual installation will work also. In general: what happens if I use pip (to get a newer install) for a package that is already installed by apt-get?
