• How to Format a USB Drive in Ubuntu Using GParted

  If a USB hard drive or flash drive is not properly formatted, then it will not show up in the Ubuntu Places menu, making it hard to interact with. We’ll show you how to format a USB drive using the tool GParted. Note: Formatting a USB drive will destroy any data currently stored on it. If you think that your USB drive is already properly formatted, but Ubuntu just isn’t picking it up, try unplugging it and plugging it back in to a different USB slot, or restarting your machine with the device plugged in on start-up. Open a terminal by clicking on Applications in the top-left of the screen, then Accessories > Terminal. GParted should be installed by default, but we’ll make sure it’s installed by entering the following command in the terminal: sudo apt-get install gparted To open GParted, enter the following command in the terminal: sudo gparted Find your USB drive in the drop-down box at the top right of the GParted window. The drive should be unallocated – if it has a valid partition on it, then you may be looking at the wrong drive. Note: Make sure you’re on the correct drive, as making changes on the wrong hard drive with GParted can delete all data on a hard drive! Assuming you’re on the right drive, right-click on the unallocated grey block and click New. In the window that pops up, change the File System to fat32 for USB Flash Drives, NTFS for USB Hard Drives that will be used in Windows, or ext3/ext4 for USB Hard Drives that will be used exclusively in Linux. Add a label if you’d like, and then click Add. Click the green checkmark and then the Apply button to apply the changes. GParted will now format your drive. If you’re formatting a large USB Hard Drive, this can take some time. Once the process is done, you can close GParted, and the drive will now show up in the Places menu. Clicking on the drive will mount it and open it in a File Browser window. It will also add a shortcut to the drive on the Desktop by default. Your USB drive is now ready to store your files! • What's the most important trait of a programmer desired by peer programmers [closed]

  Questions here talk about most important programming skills someone is supposed to possess, and, a lot of great answers spring up. The answers and the questioners seem mostly interested on qualities related to getting a better job, nailing some interview, things desired by boss or management, or improving your programming abilities. One thing that often gets blown over is the genuine consideration for what traits peers want. They don't much value things like you're one of those 'gets things done' people for the company, or you never miss a deadline, or your code is least painful to review and debug, or you're team player with fantastic leading abilities. They probably care more if you're helpful, are a refreshing person to talk to, you're fun to program in pair with, everybody wants you to review their code, or something of that nature. I, for one, would care that I come off to my peers as a pleasurable programmer to work with, as much as I care about my impression on my boss or management. Is this really significant, and if yes, what are the most desirable traits peers want from each other.

• How to change/create password keyring

  when I try to remote desktop to the server from another ubuntu machine using the remote desktop viewer, it asks me to enter the password, which I do, then the viewer pane just goes black. When I come back and look at my server it is saying that the password keyring no longer matches the password used to login to the machine please reenter the password...and when I type in the password it doesnt take it, it just keeps popping back up saying the same message over and over. I found a thread explaining to go to System--Preferences--Passwords & Encryptions and right click on the keyring and click Set as Default. I did that and the problem persists...I tried changing the password but it told me that my original password was incorrect (even though it is the password I use to login and provide root authentication when asked) so I deleted the keyring in hopes of adding a new one but there is no place in gui to add a new one...so can I add a new one through command line? if so - how?

I am creating a web application that ideally will have some sort of desktop notification. i would love to do this in HTML5 but cant as need it to run on IE 8 and below. I have looked a Flex but I'm not 100% sure how to achieve desktop notifications when running as a web app. Has anyone had this dilemma or even know of anything that would be the best fit? All opinions are welcome, will help me out a lot

• VirtualBox host: Ubuntu vs. Windows XP

  In order to lengthen the lifespan of my machine I am replacing the weakest link, the hard drive and installing a new OS. I had planned on using xp pro as my virtualbox host and ubuntu as guest. After messing with ubuntu desktop and server I am really impressed and am thinking of reversing the virtualbox setup; ubuntu host xp guest. I would use XP for Adobe Fireworks, Netflix, and iTunes (maybe) that's pretty much it. Any reason not to do ubuntu host with xp guest? I know the xp vbox will run slower as a guest but really how much slower? It's a desktop. 4gb ram, 500gb disk, Pent D 3.2 ghz

• Screen Corruption in half the screen only

  About 50% of the my NATTY desktop screen is corrupted. Once that happens I can re-boot as many times as I want but the problem continues. If I logout and then into WINDOWS for a day I may be successful and boot UBUNTU with a good screen. The desktop is formatted correctly, there's no pixelation, rather there is a fine grained white crosshatch pattern covering the entire screen. If I open any application the screen corruption worsens eventually to the point I can no longer make out anything. I ran ram memory test w/o any errors. I have no display issues when running WINDOWS 7. Any ideas. My computer is a Dual Boot stock DELL 5150 w/3gig of ram an on board video.

  Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) integrations with Oracle E-Business Suite can either be custom integrations that you build yourself or prebuilt integrations from Oracle.  For more information about the differences between the two options for SOA integrations, see this previously-published certification announcement. There are five prebuilt BPEL business processes by Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 product teams: Oracle Price Protection (DPP) Complex Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (CMRO/AHL) Oracle Transportation Management (WMS, WSH, PO) Advanced Supply Chain Planning (MSC) Product Information Management (PIM/EGO) Last year we announced the certification of BPEL 11.1.1.5 for Prebuilt E-Business Suite 12.1.3 SOA integrations.  The five prebuilt BPEL processes have now been certified with Oracle BPEL Process Manager 11g version 11.1.1.6 (in Oracle Fusion Middleware SOA Suite 11g).  These prebuilt BPEL processes are certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 and higher.   Error when we are trying to access search in sharepoint site: "Your search cannot be completed because this site is not assigned to an indexer. Contact your administrator for more information." Solving Problem: 1. Go to SharePoint Central Administration > Application Management > Content Databases (Underneath SharePoint Web Application Management). 2. Select the correct SharePoint web application – click on the name of the Content databases  - this will open the  “Manage Content Database Settings” page. 3. Make sure that the Search Server is set on the “Manage Content Database Settings” page. Hope it helps!!

Oracle Database Mobile Server (DMS for short) provides a simple and effective way to deal with the management challenge.  DMS supports data synchronization between a central Oracle database server and data on mobile devices.  It also provides authentication, encryption and application and device management.  Finally, DMS is a highly scalable solution that can be used to manage hundreds of thousands of devices.   Here’s a simplified outline of how such a solution might work. Each device runs local sync and mgmt agents that handle bidirectional data flow with an Oracle enterprise backend, run remote commands, and provide status to the management console. For example, mobile admins could monitor multiple networks of mobile devices, upgrade their software remotely, and even destroy the local database on a compromised device. DMS supports either Oracle Berkeley DB or SQLite for device-local storage, and runs on a wide variety of mobile platforms. The schema for the device-local database is pretty simple – it contains the name of the application that’s installed on the device as well as details such as product name, version number, time of last access etc. Each mobile user has an account on the monitoring system.  DMS supports authentication via the Oracle database authentication mechanisms or alternately, via an external authentication server such as Oracle Identity Management. DMS also provides the option of encrypting the data on disk as well as while it is being synchronized. Whenever a device connects with DMS, it sends the list of all local application changes to the server; the server updates the central repository with this information.  Synchronization can be triggered on-demand, whenever there’s a change on the device (e.g. new application installed or an existing application removed) or via a rule-based schedule (e.g. every Saturday). Synchronization is very fast and efficient, since only the changes are propagated.  This includes resume capability; should synchronization be interrupted for any reason, the next synchronization will resume where the previous synchronization was interrupted. If the device should be lost or stolen, DMS has the capability to remove the applications and/or data from the device. This ability to control access to sensitive data and applications is critical in the corporate environment. The central repository also allows the IT manager to track the kinds of applications that mobile users use and recommend patches and upgrades, while still allowing the mobile user full control over what applications s/he downloads and uses on the device.  This is useful since most devices are used for corporate as well as personal information. In certain restricted use scenarios, the IT manager can also control whether a certain application can be installed on a mobile device.  Should an unapproved application be installed, it can easily be removed the next time the device connects with the central server. Oracle Database mobile server provides a simple, effective and highly secure and scalable solution for managing the data and applications for the mobile workforce.

NOTE: Starting with Ubuntu 11.10, this popup option has vanished. Launchers can now only be created by editing text files in your home folder. Creating a custom launcher is easy. Right-click on your desktop and click create a launcher. Edit the .desktop file using a text editor. (More information can be found here and here.) So, which custom launchers do you use on Unity? • No Internet On 12.04.1

  I have no internet on Ubuntu 12.04.1 so i'm on a desktop so I got to install a .exe program to run my wireless card for my desktop so I got internet access, But I can't seem to download wine or its source files. If I do I put on my usb and boot into Ubuntu but then when I try to open it I get the programs source files etc. Anyone who could help me Please do :| ( I can't install wine from software center since I have no connection online). Note : I can download my stuff on windows 8 boot so I can transfer files to my usb to run on Ubuntu.

• System halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds

  I'm using Windows 7 on my HP ProBook 4250s. The problem I face is that my system halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds. These jerks are not letting me concentrate or work properly. This happens even when I'm just typing in notepad while no other application is running. I tried to install every driver from HP's website and there's no item in device manager marked with yellow icon.   So a couple of weeks ago, after a fraction over 12 years, I bade farewell to the Solaris Desktop team to join the team whose blog you're reading now: Oracle's Systems Experience Design team, known internally as sxDesign, which has a wider but still largely Solaris-focused usability remit.1 There's been a good deal of overlap and collaboration between the two teams over the years anyway, so it's not exactly a step into the unknown. The elders among you might remember a GNOME 1.4 usability study I presented at GUADEC in 2001, for example, which was primarily the handiwork of a previous incarnation of sxDesign… I pretty much just turned up at the end to steal the glory for the Desktop team. In your face, people I'm going to be working with now!2 1 A move I was first approached about making in about 2003, I think… who says I'm rubbish at making snap decisions? 2 I'm not really. They all left years ago.
