  • Java Null Pointer Exception :-(

    - by John-Michael Reed
I've got a Null Pointer Exception in my main that just won't go away and I'm totally out of ideas. The error is on the line "Board[x][y].color = 2;" in which Board is a public, static array of piece objects that contain instance variables like the one "color" that is being set to 2 in the above statement. Pieces is not static - that is there are many different copies of pieces, each with its own data, but only one board. The array has been initialized and defined as both public Piece[][] Board = new Piece[8][8] and public static Piece[][] Board = new Piece[8][8], but no matter how I mess around with it (getting rid of static, putting the variable in another object, etc.), I can't seem to get the error to go away. Help?

  • Image visualization with canvas. How to resize them?

    - by Luca Matteis
I'm building a website photo gallery for a friend. Images are loaded as simple DOM image objects (<img src="" />), and the size of these images is based on the browser size. So I resize them with CSS. This isn't an optimal solution since CSS resizing seems to change the quality of the image and pixelate it quite a bit. I was thinking of rendering the image with canvas and then resize it with that so that the quality remains effective, but I can't find any info about this online. Any ideas?

  • Storing user settings in table - how?

    - by Mdillion
I have settings for the user about 200 settings, these include notice settings and tracing settings from user activities on objects. The problem is how to store it in the DB? Should each setting be a row or a column? If colunm then table will have 200 colunms. If row then about 3 colunms but 200 rows per user x even 10 million users = not good. So how else can i store all these settings? NOTE: these settings are a mix of text entry and FK lookups to other tables. Thanks.

  • When designing an event, is it a good idea to prevent listeners from being added twice?

    - by Matt
I am creating an event-based API where a user can subscribe to an event by adding listener objects (as is common in Java or C#). When the event is raised, all subscribed listeners are invoked with the event information. I initially decided to prevent adding an event listener more than once. If a listener is added that already exists in the listener collection, it is not added again. However, after thinking about it some more, it doesn't seem that most event-based structures actually prevent this. Was my initial instinct wrong? I'm not sure which way to go here. I guess I thought that preventing addition of an existing listener would help to avoid a common programming error. Then again, it could also hide a bug that would lead to code being run multiple times when it shouldn't.

  • What is the differnce between an Oracle and Microsoft schema?

    - by Tarzan
I am working on an enterprise project. Some of the team has an Oracle background and some has a Microsoft SQL Server background. There is much confusion when we talk about schemas. I am trying to provide some clarity. Is this an accurate way to describe the difference in the meaning of schemas between the two technologies? An Oracle schema is associated with a single user and consists of the objects owned by the user. A MS SQL Server schema schema is a namespace.

  • How do i make a copy of an object? Javascript

    - by acidzombie24
    I have a class in json format. I would like to make two instance. Right now (its pretty obvious why) when i 'make' two objects i really have 2 vars pointing to one. (b.blah = 'z' will make a.blah=='z') How do i make a copy of an object? var template = { blah: 0, init: function (storageObj) { blah = storageObj; return this; //problem here }, func2: function (tagElement) { }, } a = template.init($('form [name=data]').eq(0)); b = template.init($('form [name=data2]').eq(0));

  • inheritance from the django user model results in error when changing password

    - by Jerome
I inherited form the django user model like so: from django.db import models from django.contrib.auth.models import User, UserManager from django.utils.translation import ugettext_lazy as _ class NewUserModel(User): custom_field_1 = models.CharField(_('custom field 1'), max_length=250, null=True, blank=True) custom_field_2 = models.CharField(_('custom field 2'), max_length=250, null=True, blank=True) objects = UserManager() When i go to the admin and add an entry into this model, it saves fine, but below the "Password" field where it has this text "Use '[algo]$[salt]$[hexdigest]' or use the change password form.", if i click on the "change password form' link, it produces this error Truncated incorrect DOUBLE value: '7/password' What can i do to fix this?

  • Please explain class methods

    - by user1209902
I'm finding it difficult to understand when it is necessary to create class methods. From what I've read, they are important for creating new objects, but I do not see how. The following class create a simple shape black rectangle. Can anyone show me how to incorporate a class method to do something that I could not do with an instance method? Shape.h #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @interface Shape : UIView; - (id) initWithX: (int)xVal andY: (int)yVal; @end Shape.m #import "Shape.h" @implementation Shape - (id) initWithX:(int )xVal andY:(int)yVal { self = [super init]; UIView *shape = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(xVal, yVal, 10, 10)]; shape.backgroundColor = [UIColor blackColor]; [self addSubview:shape]; return self; } @end

  • How to crete a Java Iterator that throws IOException

    - by Antonio
    I'd like to implement an iterator that retrieves objects from disk/network. Iterator itr = getRemoteIterator(); while(itr.hasNext()) { Object element = itr.next(); System.out.print(element + " "); } However the problem is that hasNext() and next() methods of the Iterator object does not allow to throw IOException. Is there any other standard interface work around this issue? Desired code is: public interface RemoteIterator<E> { boolean hasNext() throws IOException; E next() throws IOException; void remove(); }

  • transform file/directory structure into 'tree' in javascript

    - by dave
I have an array of objects that looks like this: [{ name: 'test', size: 0, type: 'directory', path: '/storage/test' }, { name: 'asdf', size: 170, type: 'directory', path: '/storage/test/asdf' }, { name: '2.txt', size: 0, type: 'file', path: '/storage/test/asdf/2.txt' }] There could be any number of arbitrary path's, this is the result of iterating through files and folders within a directory. What I'm trying to do is determine the 'root' node of these. Ultimately, this will be stored in mongodb and use materialized path to determine it's relationships. In this example, /storage/test is a root with no parent. /storage/test/asdf has the parent of /storage/test which is the parent to /storage/test/asdf/2.txt. My question is, how would you go about iterating through this array, to determine the parent's and associated children? Any help in the right direction would be great! Thank you

  • Can one extract model fit parameters after a ggplot stat_smooth call?

    - by Alex Holcombe
Using stat_smooth, I can fit models to data. E.g. g=ggplot(tips,aes(x=tip,y=as.numeric(unclass(factor(tips$sex))-1))) +facet_grid(time~.) g=g+ stat_summary(fun.y=mean,geom="point") g=g+ stat_smooth(method="glm", family="binomial") I would like to know the coefficients of the glm binomial fits. I could re-do the fit with dlply and get the coefficients with ldply, but I'd like to avoid such duplication. Calling str(g) reveals the hierarchy of objects that ggplot creates, perhaps there's some way to get to the coefficients through that?

  • XAML Multi-Level Binding Source/Path Issue

    - by tpartee
So I have this issue I've been trying various ways to tackle all day and nothing's catching and working for it. Basically I have a XAML object called ChromeWindow (derived from Window) which has in it's code-behind a DependencyProperty called AppChrome which stores a reference to an associated ApplicationChrome XAML object (derived from UserControl). ApplicationChrome's XAML file has a few x:Name'd objects (a TextBlock and Border for instance) to which I want to bind to from the ChromeWindow's XAML. The root of the ChromeWindow is x:Name'd as 'rootWindow' in the XAML, so I figured one of these bindings would work: {Binding ElementName=rootWindow, Path=AppChrome.CaptionTextBlock.Text, Mode=OneWay} But that complains of a BindingExpression path error such that the property 'CaptionTextBlock' (an x:Name'd TextBlock in AppChrome's XAML) cannot be found on object of type ApplicationChrome So I tried this binding intead: {Binding Source=AppChrome.CaptionTextBlock, Path=Text, Mode=OneWay} And still no luck, this time complaints of a BindingExpression path error again, but this time that it cannot find the 'CaptionTextBlock' property on object of type String I know I'm missing something really simple here, please help! ;D

  • Good real-world uses of metaclasses (e.g. in Python)

    - by Carles Barrobés
I'm learning about metaclasses in Python. I think it is a very powerful technique, and I'm looking for good uses for them. I'd like some feedback of good useful real-world examples of using metaclasses. I'm not looking for example code on how to write a metaclass (there are plenty examples of useless metaclasses out there), but real examples where you have applied the technique and it was really the appropriate solution. The rule is: no theoretical possibilities, but metaclasses at work in a real application. I'll start with the one example I know: Django models, for declarative programming, where the base class Model uses a metaclass to fill the model objects of useful ORM functionality from the attribute definitions. Looking forward to your contributions.

  • Place text based divs in relative locations within a circle

    - by NickG
Direct question - How would I place certain objects or small text within a certain area. For example, how would I replace the following image with html/javascript. --- I don't have enough reps to post an image :/ but try this URL - http://i.imgur.com/a3eWL.jpg Big picture - I am trying to create a kml file for Google Earth that when the point is clicked, the balloon description window pops up and I can display my html formatted diagram showing where the satellites are at that instant. Google Earth and KML docs allow for pretty much any html formatting within it, so currently looking for a good way to do this. Disclaimer: It has been a few years since i have done any html or javascript editing, so general examples and insight is greatful. Thanks

  • Released object crashes app

    - by John Smith
I am using objective-C++ (+Boost) for iPhone development. I am in a rather tight loop and need to allocate and release a certain object. The code is something like this. for (int i=0;i<100;i++) { opt = [[FObj alloc] init]; //do stuff with opt [opt release]; } The FObj object is something like @interface FObj MyCPPObj * cppobj; @end In the implementation of FObj there is a dealloc method: -(void) dealloc { delete cppobj; //previously allocated with 'new' [super dealloc]; } I am afraid that if i don't release then the 'MyCPPObj's will just pile up. But releasing makes the app crash after the first loop. What am I doing wrong? Or perhaps should I make cppobj and boost::shared_ptr? (do boost shared pointers automatically release their objects when an objective-C++ object is deleted?)

  • How to delete rows based on comparison from Data Flow Task in an SSIS?

    - by vikasde
I have a DataFlow task with two OLE DB Source objects. This is the SQL I want to achieve using SSIS: Insert into server2.db.dbo.[table2] (...) Select col1, col2, col3 ... from Server1.db.dbo.[table1] where [table1.col1] not in (Select col5 from server2.db.dbo.[table2] Where ...) I am pretty new to SSIS and not sure how to achieve this. I thought I could do this using the Data Flow task and populating the first source with the data from server1.db.dbo.table1 and the second source with server2.db.dbo.[table2] and then do the conditional check before inserting it into server2.db.dbo.[table2]. I am not sure how to do the conditional check though. Any help is appreciated.

  • Viewstate seems to be hijacked inadvertently

    - by dvr
Hi, we are using asp.net 2.x, we use session state stored in sql server, 2 web servers in loadbalance, iis6. our issue is that in the last 3 months we have had 2 cases where some one using our enquiry form has seen someone else's info e.g. first name and last name. We are not populating the form from objects in session so I have come to the conclusion that the second user has somehow received the viewstate from the first user, after that user has tried to submit and got an error e.g. has posted view state and returned the the same page and the other user has requested that page at the same time (must have been on the same server I am guessing if it is a viewstate issue). have any of you experienced this before? some questions mulling around in my head is how does the worker process know to retun view state to a unique request and how does it determine a unique request etc..

  • PHP Casting as Object type in foreach Loop

    - by Coulton
Within the following code, $quiz_object->personalities contains an array of Personality() objects. // Loop through each personality that exists for the quiz foreach($quiz_object->personalities AS $existing_personality) { // Show all of the existing personalities echo $existing_personality->GetQuizMakerPersonalityHTML(); } How do I "cast" (I think that's the right word) my variable $existing_personality within the foreach loop as the object type? I wish to do this so that when I type $existing_personality->, I get the list of public functions available for that object type. At the moment, Zend doesn't know that it refers to a Personality object within the loop.

  • What is the most elegant way to access current_user from the models? or why is it a bad idea?

    - by TheLindyHop
So, I've implemented some permissions between my users and the objects the users modify.. and I would like to lessen the coupling between the views/controllers with the models (calling said permissions). To do that, I had an idea: Implementing some of the permission functionality in the before_save / before_create / before_destroy callbacks. But since the permissions are tied to users (current_user.can_do_whatever?), I didn't know what to do. This idea may even increase coupling, as current_user is specifically controller-level. The reason why I initially wanted to do this is: All over my controllers, I'm having to check if a user has the ability to save / create / destroy. So, why not just return false upon save / create / destroy like rails' .save already does, and add an error to the model object and return false, just like rails' validations? Idk, is this good or bad? is there a better way to do this?

  • Should a service layer return view models for an MVC application?

    - by erg39
Say you have an ASP.NET MVC project and are using a service layer, such as in this contact manager tutorial on the asp.net site: http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/iteration-4-make-the-application-loosely-coupled-cs If you have viewmodels for your views, is the service layer the appropriate place to provide each viewmodel? For instance, in the service layer code sample there is a method public IEnumerable<Contact> ListContacts() { return _repository.ListContacts(); } If instead you wanted a IEnumerable, should it go in the service layer, or is there somewhere else that is the "correct" place? Perhaps more appropriately, if you have a separate viewmodel for each view associated with ContactController, should ContactManagerService have a separate method to return each viewmodel? If the service layer is not the proper place, where should viewmodel objects be initialized for use by the controller?

  • java.lang.classcastExcption

    - by Tara Singh
Hi, I have an array list of objects in my application. private static ArrayList<Player> userList=new ArrayList<Player>(); In my application, I am converting this list to byte array and then sending it to other clients. At client When I am trying to cast it back to the ArrayList, its giving me casting error. I am doing this in client side after receiving this list as byte array: ArrayList<Player> pl = (ArrayList<Player>) toObject(receivedByteArray); where toObject is my function to convert the byte array to object; Any Suggestions please !!! Thanks.

  • Why are configuration arrays acceptible parameters in PHP and Javascript?

    - by RenderIn
In most other OO languages it would be sacrilege to have each function receive a single associative array of Objects rather than enumerating each in the method signature. Why is it acceptable and commonly used in most popular frameworks for both of these languages to do this? Is there some justification beyond wishing to have concise method signatures? I do see a benefit in this -- that the API could remain unchanged as new, optional parameters are added. But Javascript and PHP already allow for optional parameters in their method signatures. If anything, it seems like Java or another OO language would benefit from this more... and yet I rarely see this pattern there. What gives?

  • deleting dynamically allocated object that contains vector in C++ STL

    - by kobac
I have a class class ChartLine{ protected: vector<Point> line; // points connecting the line CString name; //line name for legend CPen pen; //color, size and style properties of the line }; where Point is a structure struct Point{ CString x; double y; }; In main() I dynamically allocate objects of type ChartLine with new operator. If I use delete afterwards, will default destructor ~ChartLine() properly dealocate (or clear) member ChartLine::line(which is vector btw) or I would have to clear that vector in ~ChartLine() manually? Thanks in advance. Cheers.

  • how to force nhibernate to set the foreign key of the child item?

    - by npeBeg
i have a collection in the mapping: <bag name="Values" cascade="all-delete-orphan" lazy="false" inverse="true"> <key column="[TemplateId]"/> <one-to-many class="MyNamespace.Value, MyLib"/> </bag> the Value object has a foreign key [TemplateId]. both entities has their generator set to "identity". when i call session.Save() for the parent Template object, the Value objects has their [TemplateId] (the foreign key) set to zero, so an SQL exception appears. how do i forse nhibernate to set the FK value for the child items to the value of the inserted parent object?

  • c++ design question: Can i query the base classes to find the number of derived classes satisfying a

    - by vivekeviv
I have a piece of code like this class Base { public: Base(bool _active) { active = _active; } void Configure(); void Set Active(bool _active); private: bool active; }; class Derived1 : public Base { public: Derived1(bool active):Base(active){} }; similarly Derived 2 and Derived 3 Now if i call derived1Object.Configure, i need to check how many of the derived1Obj, derived2Obj,derived3Obj is active. Should i add this in the "Base" class like a function say, GetNumberOfActive()? And If the implementation is like this: class Imp { public: void Configure() { //Code instantiating a particular Derived1/2/3 Object int GetNumberOfActiveDerivedObj(); baseRef.Configure(int numberOfActiveDerivedClasses); } prive: Derived1 dObj1(true); Derived2 dObj2(false); Derived3 dObj3(true); }; should i calculate the numberOfActive Derived Objects in Imp Class? THanks
