• Django: Country drop down list?

  I have a form for address information. One of the fields is for the address country. Currently this is just a textbox. I would like a drop down list (of ISO 3166 countries) for this. I'm a django newbie so I haven't even used a Django Select widget yet. What is a good way to do this? Hard-code the choices in a file somewhere? Put them in the database? In the template?

  These days a number of commercial and open source tools have been developed for this purpose. However(unfortunately), non of them meet my requirement for specific problem I am dealing with. Currently, I am working on a project that exposes a different classes and functions to user as scripting interface. the user can use the objects from custom scripting interface and call methods to solve some specific problem. The problem I am facing is users of my classes need some sort of documentation in order to write their script efficiently. To address this problem am planing to use the compiler generated XML file to provide context sensitive help, which allows users to mouse over on any of the controls and corresponding methods from the GUI and read the reference documentation of the class/method. Now ... here are my questions: Can I get the sample source code? Can any one give me someone point me to some sort of best approach to address the problem?

  Hi all Is there a Python equivalent of PHP's mysql_real_escape_string? I'm trying to insert some strings into a MySQL db direct from Python, and keep getting tripped up by quotes in the strings. mysql_string = "INSERT INTO candidate (name, address) VALUES " for k, v in v_dict.iteritems(): mysql_string += " ('" + v_dict['name'] + "', '" + v_dict['address'] + "'), " mysql_string += ";" cursor.execute(mysql_string) I've tried re.escape() but that escapes every non-alphanumeric character in the strings, which isn't what I need - I just need to escape single quotes in this instance (plus more generally anything else that might trip up MySQL). Could do this manually I guess, but is there a smarter way to do it in Python?

I have created the Voter table in which I need to insert the record. I have added another endpoint to expose the new contract operations. • Email Verification plugin for rails?

  Hi, I'd like to verify a user's email address by sending them a verify-email-message. Do you know of a good Rails plugin that they've used or seen? Since I didn't see anything good via Google, at this point, my thought is: Add a verified boolean field to the user model. Default false. After user is added (unverified), combine email with a salt (a secret), and create the sha1 hash of the email/salt combo. The result is the verification. Send a welcoming / verification email to the user. Email includes a url that has the email address and verification as GET args to a verify action on my server. The verify action recomputes the verification using the supplied email and checks that the new verification matches the one in the url. If it does, then the User rec for the email is marked 'verified' Also will provide action to re-send the verification email. Any comments on the above? Thanks, Larry

• Can django's auth_user.username be varchar(75)?

  Django's auth_user.username field is 30 characters. That means you can't have auth_user.username store an email address. If you want to have users authenticate based on their email address it would seem you have to do some wonky stuff like writing your own authentication backend which authenticates based on (email, password) instead of (username, password) and furthermore, figuring out what you're going to put in the username field since it is required and it is a primary key. Do you put a hash in there, do you try to put the id in there... bleh! Why should you have to write all this code and consider edge cases simply because username is too small for your (farily common) purposes? Is there anything wrong with running alter table on auth_user to make username be varchar(75) so it can fit an email? What does that break if anything?

  Hello. I am compiling C++ on *nix and I would like to generate a stack dump a) at an arbitrary point in the program, b) during any signal, particularly during SIGSEGV. Google tells me that ptrace is probably the tool for the job, but I can't find any comprehensible examples of walking the stack. Getting the return address, yeah, but what about the NEXT return address? And what about extracting the symbolic name of the function at that point? Something to do with DWARF? Many thanks if you can tell me where to go from here.

• Does Google's Geocoding API return results that are more accurate than Google Maps or the same?

  I am thinking about using python or C++ in conjunction with google's geocoding API. Since geocoding is the process of turning street addresses into coordinates, I was wondering how google does this. I am looking for something that will give me coordinates that are around 50 meters away from the entrance of the location at a specified address. There are a few problems with this when you use google maps however. If you aren't doing it manually, sometimes google maps will place a marker for an address just on the road and not over the place (especially for addresses in malls, places far off the road, etc). Does the geocoding api give you more accurate coordinates or does it simply copy the coordinates of what a google maps marker would give you? I hope this makes sense. Thanks.

  Hi, I'm using an sql to replace credit card numbers with xxxx and finding that REGEX_REPLACE does not consistently replace everything. I also find that i have to put a space in front of the first X as it appears to move 1 char to the left.

  I have some address data which has been exported from a database. If the address had multiple lines, the exported data has joined all the lines into one string with the former lines being separated by dollars signs. Here's one of the addresses: INFORMATION DELIVERY DEPT$704 CHERRY ST$ATLANTA, GA 30332-0900 I'm splitting this into an array on the dollar sign and outputting the three array elements into separate tab-separated fields with printf. For some reason, it comes out like this: INFORMATION DELIVERY DEPT 704 CHERRY ST "ATLANTA, GA 30332-0900" I don't want the quotes around that final field. Can anyone explain why this is happening and how to suppress it? This is being done in Windows Vista with gawk3.1.6. Thanks! gary

• How does the linux kernel manage less than 1GB physical memory ?

  I'm learning the linux kernel internals and while reading "Understanding Linux Kernel", quite a few memory related questions struck me. One of them is, how the Linux kernel handles the memory mapping if the physical memory of say only 512 MB is installed on my system. As I read, kernel maps 0(or 16) MB-896MB physical RAM into 0xC0000000 linear address and can directly address it. So, in the above described case where I only have 512 MB: How can the kernel map 896 MB from only 512 MB ? What about user mode processes in this situation? Where are user mode processes in phys RAM? Every article explains only the situation, when you've installed 4 GB of memory and the kernel maps the 1 GB into kernel space and user processes uses the remaining amount of RAM. I would appreciate any help in improving my understanding. Thanks..!

• Passing sql results to views hard-codes views to database column names

  I just realized that i may not be following best practices in regards to the MVC pattern. My issue is that my views "know" information about my database Here's my situation in psuedo code... My controller invokes a method from my model and passes it directly to the view view.records = tableGateway.getRecords() view.display() in my view each records as record print record.name print record.address ... In my view i have record.name and record.address, info that's hard-coded to my database. Is this bad? What other ways around it are there other than iterating over everything in the controller and basically rewriting the records collection. And that just seems silly. Thanks

• Question about mail merge in DesignPro 1.0.1 for mac

  I'm using Avery DesignPro v. 1.0.1 for mac to print out address labels using a mail merge. There are two columns for addresses (Address1 and Address2), but for most of the entries on the list, Address2 is blank. When I do the mail merge, I get several address labels with a blank line between Address1 and the City, State line because there's no Address2 for those entries. Does anyone know of a way to get DesignPro to ignore Address2 completely if there's no value there, or will I have to go through and manually edit each label to delete the extra blank line?

  I'm trying to embed a mapquest direction page such as http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Ann+Arbor&1s=MI&1a=1440+Hubbard+St&1z=48109-2083&1y=US&1l=42.293437&1g=-83.724491&1v=ADDRESS&2c=Ann+Arbor&2s=MI&2a=930+N+University+Ave&2z=48109-1055&2y=US&2l=42.278558&2g=-83.737969&2v=ADDRESS using an iframe. The problem is at least one of their javascripts calls location.href which is causing the script to hang. If I'm not mistaken this is because the page I'm embedding the page on is in a different domain. Are there any ways around this?

• Mapping of memory addresses to physical modules in Windows XP

  I plan to run 32-bit Windows XP on a workstation with dual processors, based on Intel's Nehalem microarchitecture, and triple channel RAM. Even though XP is limited to 4 GB of RAM, my understanding is that it will function with more than 4 GB installed, but will only expose 4 GB (or slightly less). My question is: Assuming that 6 GB of RAM is installed in six 1 GB modules, which physical 4 GB will Windows actually map into its address space? In particular: Will it use all six 1 GB modules, taking advantage of all memory channels? (My guess is yes, and that the mapping to individual modules within a group happens in hardware.) Will it map 2 GB of address space to each of the two NUMA nodes (as each processor has it's own memory interface), or will one processor get fast access to 3 GB of RAM, while the other only has 1 GB? • JSON, Ajax login and signup form problem, critique

  Here is my problem; indexdeneme2.php has two forms Sign up and Login form, and there is validation.js and login.js which are handling the AJAX and JSON response, there are validate.php and login.php which are my scripts for validating and login. When you sign up, it sends the data to validate.php perfectly and validate.php response with JSON perfectly, validate.js must show the error in #error div. validation.js works perfectly if it is working alone. I use same kind of script for login form. Login.php also works perfectly it responses with JSON and login.js shows the errors are appear in #errorlogin div. But this works when login.js works alone. When I try to work login.js and validate.js together, it is not working. validate.php and login.php works perfectly but login.js and validation.js are not working together. They can't handle the responses coming from php scripts. It is not showing the errors in #errorlogin and #error div. They intercept each other I guess. By the way if you can critique my login.php and validate.php I will be really appreciated.   I've searched but couldn't find any results (my terminology may be off) so forgive me if this has been asked before. I was wondering if there is an easy way to call a void* as a function in C without first declaring a function pointer and then assigning the function pointer the address; ie. assuming the function to be called is type void(void) void *ptr; ptr = <some address>; ((void*())ptr)(); /* call ptr as function here */ with the above code, I get error C2066: cast to function type is illegal in VC2008 If this is possible, how would the syntax differ for functions with return types and multiple parameters?
