• How to make Shared Keys .ssh/authorized_keys and sudo work together?

  I've setup the .ssh/authorized_keys and am able to login with the new "user" using the pub/private key ... I have also added "user" to the sudoers list ... the problem I have now is when I try to execute a sudo command, something simple like: $ sudo cd /root it will prompt me for my password, which I enter, but it doesn't work (I am using the private key password I set) Also, ive disabled the users password using $ passwd -l user What am I missing? Somewhere my initial remarks are being misunderstood ... I am trying to harden my system ... the ultimate goal is to use pub/private keys to do logins versus simple password authentication. I've figured out how to set all that up via the authorized_keys file. Additionally I will ultimately prevent server logins through the root account. But before I do that I need sudo to work for a second user (the user which I will be login into the system with all the time). For this second user I want to prevent regular password logins and force only pub/private key logins, if I don't lock the user via" passwd -l user ... then if i dont use a key, i can still get into the server with a regular password. But more importantly I need to get sudo to work with a pub/private key setup with a user whos had his/her password disabled. Edit: Ok I think I've got it (the solution): 1) I've adjusted /etc/ssh/sshd_config and set PasswordAuthentication no This will prevent ssh password logins (be sure to have a working public/private key setup prior to doing this 2) I've adjusted the sudoers list visudo and added root ALL=(ALL) ALL dimas ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL 3) root is the only user account that will have a password, I am testing with two user accounts "dimas" and "sherry" which do not have a password set (passwords are blank, passwd -d user) The above essentially prevents everyone from logging into the system with passwords (a public/private key must be setup). Additionally users in the sudoers list have admin abilities. They can also su to different accounts. So basically "dimas" can sudo su sherry, however "dimas can NOT do su sherry. Similarly any user NOT in the sudoers list can NOT do su user or sudo su user. NOTE The above works but is considered poor security. Any script that is able to access code as the "dimas" or "sherry" users will be able to execute sudo to gain root access. A bug in ssh that allows remote users to log in despite the settings, a remote code execution in something like firefox, or any other flaw that allows unwanted code to run as the user will now be able to run as root. Sudo should always require a password or you may as well log in as root instead of some other user.

• C# Lambda Expression Speed

  I have not used many lambda expressions before and I ran into a case where I thought I could make slick use of one. I have a custom list of ~19,000 records and I need to find out if a record exists or not in the list so instead of writing a bunch of loops or using linq to go through the list I decided to try this: for (int i = MinX; i <= MaxX; ++i) { tempY = MinY; while (tempY <= MaxY) { bool exists = myList.Exists(item => item.XCoord == i && item.YCoord == tempY); ++tempY; } } Only problem is it take ~9 - 11 seconds to execute. Am I doing something wrong is this just a case of where I shouldn't be using an expression like this? Thanks.

• Cisco IPSec, nat, and port forwarding don't play well together

  I have two Cisco ADSL modems configured conventionally to nat the inside traffic to the ISP. That works. I have two port forwards on one of them for SMTP and IMAP from the outside to the inside this provides external access to the mail server. This works. The modem doing the port forwarding also terminates PPTP VPN traffic. There are two DNS servers one inside the office which resolves mail to the local address, one outside the office which resolves mail for the rest of the world to the external interface. That all works. I recently added an IPSec VPN between the two modems and that works for every thing EXCEPT connections over the IPSec VPN to the mail server on port 25 or 143 from workstations on the remote lan. It would seem that the modem with the port forwards is confusing traffic from the mail server destined for a machine on the other side of the IPSec VPN for traffic that should go back to a port forward connection. PPTP VPN traffic to the mail server is fine. Is this a scenario anybody is familiar with and are there any suggestions on how to work around it? Many thanks Alan But wait there is more..... I bound a secondary ip address to mail server 192.168.1.244, changed the port forwards to use it while leaving all the local and IPSec traffic to use 192.168.1.241 and the problem was solved. New port forwards. ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.1.244 25 interface Dialer1 25 ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.1.244 143 interface Dialer1 143 Obviously this is a messy solution and being able to fix this in the Cisco would be preferable.

  Hi, I need to import user profile information to a sharepoint list. Also, the user profile information will be periodically updated to the list , therefore i think i should use a timer job to update the information. Importing for the first time works without any issues. But can you suggest what can be the best way to update information. The update should take care of updating existing records in profile , mark as orphaned for the records that are deleted from user profile and add new records in user profile to the list. Thanks

  Hi, I have the following class: public class Item { public Dictionary<string, string> Data { get; set; } } and a list of it: List<Item> items; I need to filter and order this list dynamicly using SQL-Like strings. The catch is, that I need to order it by the Data dictionary. For example: Order By Data["lastname"] or Where Data["Name"].StartsWith("a"). I thought to use the dynamic linq library, but is there any way that my clients can write without the Data[]? For example: Name.StartsWith("abc") instead of Data["Name"].StartsWith("abc") ? • XPathNavigator in Silverlight

  I have a code library that makes heavy use of XPathNavigator to parse some specific xml document. The xml document is cross-referenced, meaning that an element can reference another which has not yet been encountered during parsing: <ElementA ...> <DependentElementX id="1234"> </ElementA> <ElementX id="1234" .../> The document doesn't really look like this, but the point is that 1) there is an xml schema that enforces the overall document structure, 2) elements inside the document can reference each other using some IDs, and 3) there is quite a few such cross references between different elements in the document. The document is parsed in two phases. In the first pass I walk through the document XPathDocument doc = ...; XPathNavigator nav = doc.CreateNavigator(); nav.MoveToRoot(); nav.MoveToFirstChild()... and occasionally 'bookmark' the current position (element) in the document using XPathNavigator.Clone() method. This gives me a lightweight instance of an XPathNavigator which I can store somewhere and use later to jump back to a particular place (element) in my document. Once I have enough information collected in the first pass (for example, I have made sure there is indeed an ElementX with an id='1234'), I jump back to saved bookmarks (using those saved XPathNavigators) and complete the parsing. Well, now I'm about to use this library in Silverlight 3.0 and to my horror the XPathNavigator is not in the System.Xml assembly. Questions: 1) Am I missing something obvious (i.e. XPathNavigator does exist in some shape or form, for example in a toolkit or a freeware library)? 2) If I do have to make modifications in the code, what would be the best way to go? Ideally, I would like to make minimal changes, not to rewrite 80% of the code just to be able to use something like XLinq. To resume, in case I have to give up XPathNavigator, all I need is a way to bookmark places in my document and to get back to them so that I can continue to iterate from where I left off. • Winforms: calling entry form function from a different class

  I'm kinda new to programming and got a question on what is a good practice. I created a class that represents a ball and it has a function Jump() that use 2 timers and get the ball up and down. I know that in Winforms you got to call Invalidate() every time you want to repaint the screen, or part of it. I didn't find a good way to do that, so I reference the form in my class, and called Invalidate() inside my ball class every time I need to repaint to ball movement. • WPF - 'Relational' Data in XAML Using DataContext

  Hi, Say I have a list of Employee IDs from one data source and a separate data source with a list of Employees, with their ID, Surname, FirstName, etc. Is it possible in XAML only to get the Employee's name from the second data source and display it next to the ID, using something like this (with the syntax corrected)?.. <TextBlock x:Name="EmployeeID" Text="{Binding ID}"></TextBlock> <TextBlock Grid.Column="1" DataContext="{StaticResource EmployeeList[**where ID = {Binding ID}**]}" Text="{Binding Surname}"/> I'm thinking back to my days using XML and XSLT with XPath to achieve the kind of thing shown above. Is this kind of thing possible in XAML? Or do I need to 'denormalize' the data first in code, into one consolidated list? It seems like it should be possible to do this simple task using XAML only, but I can't quite get my head around how you would switch the DataContext correctly and what the syntax would be to achieve this. • Unmarshalling collections in JaxB

  Hi, suppose I have this class: public class A { private HashMap<String, B> map; @XmlElement private void setB(ArrayList<B> col) { ... } private ArrayList<B> getB() { ... } } When trying to unmarshall an xml document to this class using JaxB I notice that instead of calling the setB() method and sending me the list of B instances JaxB actually calls the getB() and adds the B instances to the returned list. Why? The reason I want the setter to be called is that the list is actually just a temporary storage from which I want to build the map field, so I thought to do it in the setter. Thanks.

• Setting TreeView.DataContext doesn't refresh the tree

  I have a List that I've bound to a TreeView. Setting TreeView.DataContext works - everything displays correctly. I then change the list (add an item to it) and set TreeView.DataContext again (to the same value) but the tree does not refresh with the new items. How do I get the treeview to refresh? This is basically my code: public class xItemCollection : ObservableCollection<xItem> { } public class xItem : INotifyPropertyChanged { xItemCollection _Items; public xItem() { _Items = new xItemCollection(); } public xItemCollection Items {get{return _Items;}} } ... this.RootItem = new xItem(); treeView.DataContext = this; Adding items to the list works until the tree is rendered for the first time. After it is rendered, adding/removing items does not refresh the tree.

• What are the Worst Software Project Failures Ever?

  Is there a good list of "worst software project failures ever" in the history of software development? For example in Canada a "gun registry" project spent around two billion dollars. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_registry). This is of course, insane, even if the final product "sort of worked". I have heard of an FBI Case file system which there have been several attempts to rewrite, all of them so far, failures. There is a book on the subject (Software Runaways). There doesn't seem to be be a software "boondoggle" list or "fiasco" list on Wikipedia that I can see. (Update: Therac-25 would be the 'winner' of this question, except that I was internally thinking more of Software projects that had as their deliverable, mainly software, as opposed to firmware projects like Therac-25, where the hardware and firmware together are capable of killing people. In terms of pure software monetary debacles, which was my intended question, there are several contenders.)

• Configuring gmail for use on mailing lists

  This is really two questions in one. First, are nettiquette guidelines still accurate in their restrictions on ASCII vs. HTML, posting style, and line length? (Here's a recent metafilter discussion of the topic.) Second, If they are not, should these guidelines be respected? If they are (or if they should still be respected), how can modern mail programs be configured to work properly with them? Most mailing list etiquette statements appear to have been written by sysadmins who loved their command lines, and refuse to change anything. Many still reference rfc1855, written in 1995. Just reading that paginated TXT should give you an idea of the climate at the time. Here's a short, fairly random list of mailing list etiquette statements with some extracted formatting guidelines: Mozilla - HTML discouraged, interleaved posting. FreeBSD - No HTML, don't top post, line length at 75 characters. Fedora - No HTML, bottom-post. You get the idea. You've all seen etiquette statements before. So, assuming that the rules should be obeyed (Usually a good idea), what can be done to allow me to still use a modern mail program, and exchange mail with friends who use the same programs? We like to format our mail. Bold headings, code snippets (sometimes syntax highlighted, if the copy-paste pulls RTF text as from XCOde and Eclipse), free line breaks determined by your browser width, and the (very) occasional image make the message easier to read. Threaded conversations are a wonderful thing. Broadband connections are, I'm sure, the rule for most of the users of SU and of developer mailing lists, disk space is cheap, and so the overhead of HTML is laughable. However, I don't want to post a question to a mailing list and have the guru who can answer my question automatically delete it, or come off as uncaring. Until I hear otherwise, I'll continue to respect the rules as best I can. For a common example of the problem, Gmail, by default, sends HTML formatted messages with bottom-posted quotes (which are folded in, just read the last message immediately above), and uses the frame width to wrap lines, rather than a character count. ASCII can be selected, and quotes can be moved and reversed, but line wraps of quotes don't work, line breaks are tedious to add (and more tedious to read, if they're super small in comparison to the width of the frame). Is there a forwarding, free mail program which can help with this exercise? Should an "RFC1855 mode" lab be written? Or do I have to go to the command line for my mailing lists, and gmail for my other mail?

  I want my Food class to be able to test whenever it is equal to another class. I will later use it against a List, and I want to use its List.Contains() method. Should I implement IEquatable or just override Object.Equals()? From MSDN: This method determines equality by using the default equality comparer, as defined by the object's implementation of the IEquatable.Equals method for T (the type of values in the list). So my next question is: which functions/classes of the .NET framework make use of Object.Equals()? Should I use it in the first place? Thanks

• sharepoint cannot export all fields to spreadsheet

  I am trying to make an export of a list in SharePoint to an Excel spreadsheet. I have added all needed fields to my default view of the list, (like Publishing Start Date / End date) but some fields (like Publishing Start Date / End date) don't show up in Excel. Any idea? EDIT: My setup is a MOSS standard edition, the needed fields (Publishing Start Date / End date) are standard SharePoint publishing fields. The versions of Excel I tried it with are 2003 and 2007

• Adding value of cell X only if cell Y is blank

  I have a list with three columns A, B, and C. The first two columns are complete (A and B), while the third (C) has many blanked fields. What I want to do is replace all the blank fields in Column C with the same value form cell A in the same row.
