• bind9 dlz/mysql at ubuntu segfault libmysqlclient.so

  I have a big problem. I installed the bind9 nameserver to three different computer. two Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS, and one Ubuntu 11.10 I compiled it 9.7.0, 9.7.3, 9.9.0 with this method: ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc/bind --localstatedir=/var \ --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info \ --enable-threads --enable-largefile --with-libtool --enable-shared --enable-static \ --with-openssl=/usr --with-gssapi=/usr --with-gnu-ld \ --with-dlz-mysql=yes --with-dlz-bdb=no \ --with-dlz-filesystem=yes --with-geoip=/usr make make install After the set up for dlz/mysql, the BIND server is working perfetctly until 5-30 minute long. Ahter i got segfault. I resolve temporaly the problem with a simple process watchdog, and if the named is stopped, the watchdog is restart it, but this is not a good idea in long therm. • Exchange 2010 Mail Enabled Public Folder Unable to Recieve External (anon) e-mail.

  Hello All, I am having issues with my "Public Folders" mail enabled folders receiving e-mails from external senders. The folder is setup with three Accepted Domains (names changed for privacy reasons): 1 - domain1.com (primary & Authoritative) 2 - domain2.com (Authoritative) 3 - domain3.com (Authoritative) When someone attempts to send an e-mail to [email protected] from inside the organization, the e-mail is received and placed in the appropriate folder. However, when someone tries to send an e-mail from outside the organization (such as a gmail account), the following error message is received: "Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 554 554 Recipient address rejected: User unknown (state 14)." When I try to send an e-mail to the same folder, using the same e-mail address above ([email protected]), but with domain2.com instead of domain3.com, it works as intended (both internal & external). I have checked, double checked, and triple checked my DNS settings comparing those from domain2 & domain3 with them both appearing identical. I have tried recreating the folders in question with the same results. I have also ran Get-PublicFolderClientPermission "\Web Programs\folder" with the following results for user anonymous: RunspaceId : 5ff99653-a8c3-4619-8eeb-abc723dc908b Identity : \Web Programs\folder User : Anonymous AccessRights : {CreateItems} Domain2.com & Domain3.com are duplicates of each other, but only domain2.com works as intended. All other exchange functions are functioning properly. If anyone out there has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. I've just hit a brick wall. Thanks for all your help in advance! --Alex

• Will Parallel-port dongle work on USB-to-Parallel Adapter?

  We have a niche program running on a Win2K laptop that uses a security dongle connected to a parallel port for authentication. The laptop is getting creaky and I spent a frustrating night last night shopping various websites for a new laptop that had a parallel port. Seems I'm about three years late [G]. The question I have, is, if I buy a new(ish) laptop and use a USB-to-Parallel Port adapter, will the security dongle work? I know I'm not being specific about the app, but it's one most people wouldn't have heard of anyways. I've been guessing the answer to my question is no, since the app won't know to send a request out to the non-existent port. But, if the process actually is that the dongle sends a message INTO the computer every now and then, then it might work. And, I'm not sure whether the dongle is only needed at program startup time or randomly. The dongle is a 'permanent' addition to the old laptop. This is all about the money. We can have a newly-updated version of the program (which won't add any features we need) for the princely sum of $2700. Or we can spend $500 on a refurbed laptop still running WinXP, add a 30 buck adapter and keep the same solid, stolid performance we've come to appreciate. But it all comes down to the dongle behaviour. Oh, and a dock won't work. The whole laptop issue is about moving about the various nooks and crannies of the building with laptop in hand. • How to set up QoS on ADSL router (terracom) for prioritizing browsing

  I want to configure the ADSL router which connects 10+ machines to the internet. I want to give maximum priority to browsing (ports 80,443) and set low priority for bittorrent etc.(port 42180) I have been experimenting with settings , but with no luck. There are three settings which confuse me, along with my understanding. 802.1 Priority - Related to LAN level, possible values 0-7 , higher numbers means higher priority. 'Mark traffic priority' - clueless about this. IPP/DS - IP Precedence - possible values 0-7 ; 6 & 7 are reserved, so set 5 for highest priority. Or when using DSCP - set 46 for highest priority. Please help me in getting this done... Similer question for another model of router here , but with less number of confusing options :) How to configure QoS on home router Update: from discussion on another thread, QoS can control only upstream traffic (from router to the internet) , while this may in turn affect downstream traffic rate, there is no direct control over data coming into the router.

• How to deduplicate 40TB of data?

  I've inherited a research cluster with ~40TB of data across three filesystems. The data stretches back almost 15 years, and there are most likely a good amount of duplicates as researchers copy each others data for different reasons and then just hang on to the copies. I know about de-duping tools like fdupes and rmlint. I'm trying to find one that will work on such a large dataset. I don't care if it takes weeks (or maybe even months) to crawl all the data - I'll probably throttle it anyway to go easy on the filesystems. But I need to find a tool that's either somehow super efficient with RAM, or can store all the intermediary data it needs in files rather than RAM. I'm assuming that my RAM (64GB) will be exhausted if I crawl through all this data as one set. I'm experimenting with fdupes now on a 900GB tree. It's 25% of the way through and RAM usage has been slowly creeping up the whole time, now it's at 700MB. Or, is there a way to direct a process to use disk-mapped RAM so there's much more available and it doesn't use system RAM? I'm running CentOS 6.

• PS/2 to USB adapter doesn't work with Model M keyboard

  I bought a server about 3 months ago from a friend, and I have only had time to tinker with it in the last week. I noticed that this server doesn't have any PS/2 ports, which meant configuring it was near impossible. I don't have any USB keyboards in the house, I only have an IBM Model M keyboard (built 1994) and another IBM keyboard that was built circa 2001. Both of them have PS/2 connections. I bought an adapter off eBay, and when I used it with the Model M keyboard the three lights on the keyboard flashed for a split second, but then the keyboard is then unresponsive. I can bash away at the keys for ages and nothing will happen. The same applies to the later built IBM keyboard. What could I do to make the adapter work? I am getting the loan of a USB keyboard in two weeks time, but I'd like a more permanent solution without having to rely on getting the loan of a keyboard every time I have to perform maintenance on the server. And as I already have two keyboards which work fine and I like using, I don't really want to have to buy another keyboard just for use on the server.

• Why can't I connect to computers on my network using our external IP address?

  My home network is serviced by an ADSL line. The modem is in bridged mode. The router performs the PPPoE. Three computers are connected to the router: two wired Windows 7 boxes and a Ubuntu Linux box over wifi. The computers are hosting various forms of services including FTP and HTTP. The router has port forwarding mapped from the relevant ports to the reserved IP addresses for the computers. If I attempt to connect to a server inside the network, such as ftp://67.xx.xxx.xxx from inside the network, the request times out. However if I connect using the internally mapped address, such as ftp://192.168.0.100, all is well. This is a nuisance for setting up software, especially on the laptop which needs to be able to phone home from anywhere, and I just don't have enough expertise with networking to know why this is occurring to even have a clue whether it can be solved or not. edit: It should be noted that the servers can be accessible outside the network - say, at the starbucks across the street - perfectly fine, using the ISP provided address and the appropriate port.

• Export NFS path containing "-" (dash)

  I'm in a bit of a pinch with NFS exports file. Specifically, I can't find a way to export a directory containing "-" in the path name. Manual (exports(5)) states: Also, each line may have one or more specifications for default options after the path name, in the form of a dash ("-") followed by an option list. The option list is used for all subsequent exports on that line only. It then states: If an export name contains spaces it should be quoted using double quotes. You can also specify spaces or other unusual character in the export name using a backslash followed by the character code as three octal digits. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Specifically, if the pathname contains "-", either verbatim, or with \055 or is enclosed in double quotes, it still refers to the name without "-" Any ideas? I have a large number of directories, all of the form /vol/buildsystem-s3c2440 /vol/buildsystem-tao3530 and I'd prefer to have them all available as nfs exports. Short of replacing the "-" with "_" everywhere in the scripts, can it be done with "-" ?

• Cisco VPN endpoints disconnecting from a VLAN

  I have a number of Cisco ASA 5505 and PIX 506e around the world acting as VPN endpoints. They connect to a Cisco VPN Concentrator 3000 at HQ. I am using EZVPN to set up the VPN (i.e. most of the config is central on the VPN Concentrator) The majority of endpoints work absolutely fine. However, there are three that do not. 2 ASAs and 1 PIX get disconnected from one of the VLANs on our network. This is the VLAN that my monitoring server runs on - so those endpoints look as if they have gone down. However, I can still ping the endpoints from our user VLAN. If I then SSH onto the endpoint, and do a ping to my monitoring server, the connection comes back. Then after about 10 minutes it stops working again. I've looked at the configuration of my endpoints, and I can't see any significant differences. One common feature is that the affected endpoints are connecting to the internet via retail quality routers. However, I don't see how this could affect traffic within a VPN tunnel. Any ideas or suggestions? I've also got a thread on Cisco's forums at https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/344638. One other person has reported the same problem.

• Software to clean up photos of whiteboards and documents?

  I take a lot of photos of whiteboards, blackboards, and so on for teaching purposes (examples online through May 2010). I'm interested in cleaning them up for archival purposes, preferably using Linux. Commercial products ClearBoard and PhotoNote are priced a little aggressively for my purposes, plus my students would like to have this capability too. Does anyone know of any good, open source software for Converting photographs to images with just a few colors? Eliminating perspective distortion? Removing unwanted junk from around the edges of an image? or anything like that? I'm imagining that I start out with a picture of my whiteboard using red and black markers, and I end up with a three-color image using just white, red, and black. Or I photograph a laser-printed document and end up with a clean black-and-white image. I have tried standard tools that reduce the number of colors in an image, and they do a terrible job—probably because they are trying to reproduce the uneven illumination of the original image. Command-line Linux tools would be ideal.

• Split Tunnel VPN using incorrect Tunnel

  Our company has a handful of field offices that have recently been setup with a regular internet connection after we removed the T1 and router that connected them directly to our network. Now, when the users are in the office, they log in to the VPN to be able to connect to the network. For the sake of them being able to print and scan from the local multi-function we have setup a split tunnel VPN. We currently have about 15-20 users using this setup around the country without any problems. Recently one of our users started having problems accessing internal programs/sites when connecting from both home and the office. There are three other users in the same office and they do not have this problem. I assumed that it was something with the computer and went ahead and replaced it with another of the same model. The computer worked fine in our home office; however, when the user received it, she had the exact same problem both at home and in the field office. Thinking it may be a NIC driver issue I sent her another computer, this time a different model, same problem occurred. If I update the host file to point to the correct paths, things will work, and if I connect via a normal VPN connection everything works, but the user cannot scan or print - which is a problem. Have tried to find ways to create another tunnel on a normal VPN and have tried to find ways to force the correct tunnel on the split tunnel VPN. It appears that there is something related to the ISP because if I connect to Comcast or Verizon it is fine but once she connects to Insite then she has problems. I have been unable to get any support from Insite as they don't feel the issue is with them. We use a Nortel VPN client. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

• VPN with client-to-client direct connectivity?

  When setting up a VPN, clients (say client1 and client2) usually authenticate to a server, and together the three constitute the VPN. When client1 wishes to send a packet to client2, this packet usually gets routed by way of server. Are there products / configuration blueprints for products where it is possible to send packets directly from client1 to client2 without going though server? (if the underlying network topology permits it, e.g. no firewalls in the way) If not, is there a way by which client1 can send a packet to client2 by way of server, without the server being able to snoop on the content of the packet? (E.g. because the packet is encrypted with the public key of client2) I just asked in the OpenVPN forum, and the answer I got was "not with OpenVPN". So my question is: are there other products with which this is possible? Open-source preferred ... One use case: client1 and client2, typically in separate offices, find themselves both at headquarters. Do they still need to talk to each other via the public internet? Links appreciated.   Hello, My mail server has been getting the following error from Yahoo's mail servers since about a month: postfix/smtp[23791]: host g.mx.mail.yahoo.com[98.137.54.238] refused to talk to me: 421 4.7.1 [TS03] All messages from [my ip] will be permanently deferred; Retrying will NOT succeed. See http:// postmaster.yahoo.com/421-ts03.html I have exchanged about 4 emails with Yahoo's support team. The first three seemed like automated messages, and the 4th told me that there is nothing they can do, but if I change my policies I can send them another email in 6 months. They also told me: However, based on the information you have provided us, we cannot systematically deliver your email to the Inbox at this time. We suggest that you ask your users to set up a filter in Yahoo! Mail to ensure that they get your email messages in their Inbox. The problem is that my email doesn't even get to their Spam folder. The server won't allow any connections. I have never sent spam messages, not even newsletters. I only send emails for my new users so they can activate their account. I've also implemented DKIM and told Yahoo about this. I have checked my configuration with http://www.myiptest.com/staticpages/index.php/DomainKeys-DKIM-SPF-Validator-test and it reports that both SPF and DKIM are set up correctly. What should I do? Basically, I'm losing new users every day. Any help will be appreciated. P.S.: I apologize if this particular question has already been asked. I searched for it but didn't find it.

• Mac compatible Web-Development Tools

  Hi, I'm looking for any Mac compatibile development tools that are tried and tested. I'm quite sick of my MySQL query browser crashing... And i'm sure there is probably better software out there anyways... At the moment my focus is dedicated to application development using PHP/MySQL/Ajax. (although, I will be learning ActionScript/Flex shortly). Here are the apps I regularly use and a general idea of the environment I work in: Hosting - localhost: Mamp Production: Amazon EC2 IDE - Coda: PHP/Mysql/Javascript Mysql - PHPMyAdmin MySQL query browser FTP - Coda FileZilla X11 is used for connecting to my production environment I am mainly looking for... -tools that will help me better manage (create, edit... whatever) databases. -Version control. This is huge as I'm working with a team of three other developers (we reeeeeeaaally need to standardize our environments..) Although any cool little tools to make my job easier are always a plus! I am unable to insert more than one link as I'm not rated on this forum.

• Browser history, by window

  I use Chrome --but can switch to another browser if the feature I am about to describe is available. Browsing history, AFAIK in Chrome is sorted exclusively chronologically. Very often however, I will be working on a particular task on my laptop and have multiple (read: a lot) of tabs open in a single Chrome window for that task. Before finishing that task, I may need to work on something else --so I will open another window and minimize the other one, and start researching an entirely different issue. Over the course of a day, I may end up with 10-15 windows with many tabs each. This raises two issues: (a) memory usage and (b) quickly switching between the most relevant two or three windows. I solve these two problems like any regular guy probably would --closing windows. I want to be able to reopen specific windows that I have closed, such that the tabs that were open in that window at the time the window was closed will reopen. Ideally, closed windows will be sorted by the time they were closed and identified by the tabs that were open (even more ideally, I would be able to name these windows (contemporaneously or in the history menu)). Now that I describe this, what I am asking is: does any browser offer the ability to "save and close" windows? (This is distinct from an option to auto-restore tabs upon reopening the browser) Thank you.

The WLAN is set up by an ASUS RT-N12 router which provides perfect coverage for the ground floor and the basement. However, I set up my "home office" in the basement where the signal barely arrived. So I purchased a TP-Link TL-WA901ND (300 Mbps) Access Point which I set up in the other corner of the ground floor to expand the ASUS router's range. I used the AP's Repeater mode for that. The distance between my computer and the TP-Link AP is 6-7 meters. There is a staircase going down from the ground floor to the basement so there are no solid walls between the computer and the AP. This setup mostly works (I am writing this from the basement) but it is not reliable (the signal strength sometimes goes down to ~40% of the max) sometimes so I wonder if I am doing it correctly or if there is a better way. UPDATE Tried one more thing, setting up the TP-LINK AP in Access Point mode. That way, I can make it use a different SSID. I enabled WDS/Bridge so that it expands the range of the ASUS router (see screenshot). That does not work, either, if I connect to the network set up by the TP-LINK device (PELSTER-2), I can't reach the external network (the Internet). It seems the problem always comes back to this, the TP-LINK does not have access to the external network, whatever its mode of operation.

• Disk IO slow on ESXi, even slower on a VM (freeNAS + iSCSI)

  I have a server with ESXi 5 and iSCSI attached network storage(4x1Tb Raid-Z on freenas 8.0.4). Those two machines are connected to each other with Gigabit ethernet. The raid-z volume is divided into three parts: two zvols, shared with iscsi, and one directly on top of zfs, shared with nfs and similar. I ssh'd into the freeNAS box, and did some testing on the disks. I used ddto test the third part of the disks (straight on top of ZFS). I copied a 4GB (2x the amount of RAM) block from /dev/zero to the disk, and the speed was 80MB/s. Other of the iSCSI shared zvols is a datastore for the ESXi. I did similar test with time dd .. there. Since the dd there did not give the speed, I divided the amount of data transfered by the time show by time. The result was around 30-40 MB/s. Thats about half of the speed from the freeNAS host! Then I tested the IO on a VM running on the same ESXi host. The VM was a light CentOS 6.0 machine, which was not really doing anything else at that time. There were no other VMs running on the server at the time, and the other two "parts" of the disk array were not used. A similar dd test gave me result of about 15-20 MB/s. That is again about half of the result on a lower level! Of course the is some overhead in raid-z - zfs - zvolume - iSCSI - VMFS - VM, but I don't expect it to be that big. I belive there must be something wrong in my system. I have heard about bad performance of freeNAS's iSCSI, is that it? I have not managed to get any other "big" SAN OS to run on the box (NexentaSTOR, openfiler). Can you see any obvious problems with my setup?

  I get a blue screen of death in my windows 98 machine every time I boot it. I can't reach to my desktop. The error is like this: A fatal exception 0E occured at 0028:C003CC2F in VxD IOS(01) + 0000156B This was called from 0028:C0082E60 in VxD VKD(01) + 000001D0 I have to then give it a three finger salute to restart the system. There is no other way to shut down the system at this point except pressing the CPU power button. What could be the problem? • Why are FMS logs filled with 'play' event status code 408 for a failed webcast?

  Recently we had a live webcast event go horribly wrong. I'm doing the technical post-mortem, with limited information. We know that the hardware encoder (a Digital Rapid Touch Stream Web HDI) was unable to send upstream at a sustained reliable high rate. What we don't know is if the encoder's connection was problematic (Zürich), or that of the streaming server (in Frankfurt). Unfortunately, I've got three different vendors all blaming each other (the CDN who runs the server, the on-site ISP and the on-site encoding team.) In the FMS log files I see a couple of interesting things: Zillions of Status Code 408 on play event entries for clients. Adobe's documentation stats that this "Stream stopped because client disconnected". ("Zillions" would be a ratio of 10 events for every individual IP address.) Several unpublish / (re)publish events per hour for the encoder I'd like to know if all those 408s could tell me with authority that the FMS server was starved for bandwidth, or that the encoding signal was starved (and hence the server was disconnecting clients.) Any clues?

• Xp SP3 - Non-Functioning

  Ok Here is a crazy problem, I have a HP dv6000 Laptop that can no longer hold a charge, so I hooked it up to my TV, bought a wireless mouse and keyboard and configured xp to run with the lid closed, It has medium to heavy usage mainly just streaming from sites like Netfilx, Hulu, ABC, etc. And playing movies I ripped of dvd. It ran fine for a while but recently it has been having some weird problems: Problem one: I used to use firefox but now when run it I can type but as soon as I click something it just shuts down, completely, I can't even close it unless I use taskmanager to do it. So I went and got google chrome which is better but still hit or miss, but never completely shuts down, I just can't click anything or type anything, or sometimes I just can't type anything or vice versa. Also when I open a new tab, and try to move back to my old one, it automatically closes the old tab when I click on it. Problem two: When using the internet I can't use any other application or anything windows (ie. Windows explorer) until I force quit all browsers with taskmanger. The reason I can't run anything is because I can't click on it. Problem three: When I try to play a movie (with vlc) Once it starts playing I can't click on anything, but I can use hotkeys, and once it stops everything is fine again. Well I hope somebody knows whats going on because I have no clue, If you need clarification or more info on something I would be happy to provide it...

• Windows 7 hangs while loading desktop

  I am facing a weird problem. My computer hangs while loading the desktop, and only the background shows up; no icons or bars load. If I power the system on and off about 4-6 times, I may be able to use it normally. The desktop loads normally after rebooting or in safe mode; this only occurs when I start the system normally. I've tried several things to fix it, such as removing all start-up items, but it still doesn't solve the problem. What should I do?
