• VSDB to SSDT part 4 : Redistributable database deployment package with SqlPackage.exe

  The goal here is to use SSDT SqlPackage to deploy the output of a Visual Studio 2012 Database project… a bit in the same fashion that was detailed here : http://geekswithblogs.net/80n/archive/2012/09/12/vsdb-to-ssdt-part-3--command-line-deployment-with-sqlpackage.exe.aspx   The difference is we want to do it on an environment where Visual Studio 2012 and SSDT are not installed. This might be the case of your Production server.   Package structure So, to get started you need to create a folder named “DeploymentSSDTRedistributable”. This folder will have the following structure :         The dacpac and dll files are the outputs of your Visual Studio 2012 Database project. If your database project references another database project, you need to put their dacpac and dll here too, otherwise deployment will not work. The publish.xml file is the publish configuration suitable for your target environment. It holds connexion strings, SQLVARS parameters and deployment options. Review it carefully. The SqlDacRuntime folder (an arbitrary chosen name) will hold the SqlPackage executable and supporting libraries   Contents of the SqlDacRuntime folder Here is what you need to put in the SqlDacRuntime folder  :      You will be able to find these files in the following locations, on a machine with Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate installed : C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin : SqlPackage.exe Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql.dll  Microsoft.Data.Tools.Utilities.dll Microsoft.SqlServer.Dac.dll C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Microsoft.SqlServer.TransactSql.ScriptDom\v4.0_11.0.0.0__89845dcd8080cc91 Microsoft.SqlServer.TransactSql.ScriptDom.dll   Deploying   Now take your DeploymentSSDTRedistributable deployment package to your remote machine. In a standard command window, place yourself inside the DeploymentSSDTRedistributable  folder.   You can first perform a check of what will be updated in the target database. The DeployReport task of SqlPackage.exe will help you do that. The following command will output an xml of the changes:   "SqlDacRuntime/SqlPackage.exe" /Action:DeployReport /SourceFile:./Our.Database.dacpac /Profile:./Release.publish.xml /OutputPath:./ChangesToDeploy.xml      You might get some warnings on Log and Data file like I did. You can ignore them. Also, the tool is warning about data loss when removing a column from a table. By default, the publish.xml options will prevent you from deploying when data loss is occuring (see the BlockOnPossibleDataLoss inside the publish.xml file). Before actual deployment, take time to carefully review the changes to be applied in the ChangesToDeploy.xml file.    When you are satisfied, you can deploy your changes with the following command : "SqlDacRuntime/SqlPackage.exe" /Action:Publish /SourceFile:./Our.Database.dacpac /Profile:./Release.publish.xml   Et voilà !  Your dacpac file has been deployed to your database. • Making the WPeFfort

  Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 will be launched on April 12th. The basic layout looks pretty much as it did, so it is not immediately obvious on first inspection that it was completely rewritten in the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). The current VS 2008 codebase had reached the end of its life; It was getting slow to initialize and sluggish to run, and was never going to allow for multi-monitor support or easier extensibility. It can't have been an easy decision to rewrite Visual Studio, but the gamble seems to have paid off. Although certain bugs in the betas caused some anxiety about performance, these seem to have been fixed, and the new Visual Studio is definitely faster. In rewriting the codebase, it has been possible to make obvious improvements, such as being able to run different windows on different monitors, and you only being presented with the Toolbox controls and References that are appropriate to your target .NET version. There is also an IntelliTrace debugger, and Intellisense has been improved by virtue of separating a 'Suggestion Mode' and 'Completion Mode' (with its 'Generate From.' 'Highlight References.', and 'Navigate to...' features). At the same time, there has been quite a clearout; Certain features that had been tucked away in the previous versions, such as Brief or Emacs emulation support, have been dropped. (Yes, they were being used!) There are a lot of features that didn't require the rewrite, but are welcome. It is now easier to develop WPF applications (e.g. drag-and-drop Databinding), and there is support for Azure. There are more, and better templates and the design tools are greatly improved (e.g. Expression Web, Expression Blend, WPF Sketchflow, Silverlight designer, Document Map Margin and Inline Call Hierarchy). Sharepoint is better supported, and Office apps will benefit from C#'s support of optional and named arguments, and allowing several Office Solutions within a Deployment package. Most importantly, it is a vote of confidence in the WPF. VS 2010 is the essential missing component that has been impeding the faster adoption of WPF. The fact that it is actually now written in WPF should now reassure the doubters, and convince more developers to make the move from WinForms to WPF. In using WPF, the developers of Visual Studio have had the clout to fix some issues which have been bothering WPF developers for some time (such as blurred text). • Exporting the frames in a Flash CS5.5 animation and possibly creating the spritesheet

  Some time ago, I asked a question here to know what would be the best way to create animations when making an Android game and I got great answers. I did what people told me there by exporting each frame from a Flash animation manually and creating the spritesheet also manually and it was very tedious. Now, I changed project and this one is going to contain a lot more animations and I feel like there has to be a better way to to export each frame individually and possibly create my spritesheets in an automated manner. My designer is using Flash CS5.5 and I was wondering if all of this was possible, as I can't find an option or code examples on how to save each frame individually. If this is not possible using Flash, please recommend me another program that can be used to create animations without having to create each frame on its own. I'd rather keep Flash as my designer knows how to use it and it's giving great results.

• Problem with Ogmo Editor (is Tiled Editor a solution?)

  I made a level editor for a puzzle game with Ogmo Editor and gave it to our designer/level designer. When he downloaded and started Ogmo, his CPU went to 100%. I looked at my CPU usage while Ogmo is running, and it goes from 20% to 30% (which is also high for an application alike Ogmo). He has a Windows 7 VM running on his Mac and I have a normal Windows PC, can this be a problem? I found a thread on FlashFunk forum that confirms that Ogmo has CPU usage issues. Has anybody maybe solved this issue? The solution seems to use Tiled Editor, but I never used it before. Is it difficult to change a level editor from Ogmo to Tiled? Can they export in the same format (XML with CSV elements for my puzzle game)?

  What is the best practice or advice for a programmer's CV? If I were a graphic designer or more of a web designer as opposed to a programmer, then I'd imagine a CV would have a bit more flourish to it. Yet as a programmer, aren't we judged on not only efficiency and results but also creativity, imagination and initiative? Should this be reflected in a CV? Or is it all about the information, no wishy washy designs in sight? Has anyone experimented with an original alternative to a PDF CV with a template from MS Word or Mac Pages?

  I have a few of domain names and a rather simple website (small company type thing). We are in the process of having a web designer create a new website for us, but I don't want to give access to the control panel for the domain names (and have no way to limit it, it seems), while at the same time I don't want to be the go between guy for it the settings. Is there a way or a service for me to point the domain's at a 3rd party DNS system, that I can then give access for the web designer, without worry that he can find my personal info or try and transfer my domain out. • What's the best way to create animations when doing Android development?

  I'm trying to create my first Android game and I'm currently trying to figure out (with someone that will do the drawings and another programmer) what the best way to create animation is. (Animations such as a character moving, etc.) At first, the designer said that she could draw objects/characters and animate them with flash so she didn't have to draw every single frame of an action. The other programmer and I don't know Flash too much so I suggested extracting all the images from the Flash animation and making them appear one after the other when the animation is to start. He said that would end up taking too much resource on the CPU and I tend to agree, but I don't really see how we're supposed to make smooth animations without it being too hard on the hardware and, if possible, not have the designer draw every single frame on Adobe Illustrator. Can an experienced Android game developper help me balance this out so we can move on to other parts of the game as I have no idea what the best way to create animations is.
