• Overview of PHP shorthand

  I've been programming in PHP for years now, but I've never learned how to use any shorthand. I come across it from time to time in code and have a hard time reading it, so I'd like to learn the different shorthand that exists for the language sot hat I can read it and start saving time/lines by using it, but I can't seem to find a comprehensive overview of all of the shorthand. A Google search pretty much exclusively shows the shorthand for if/else statements, but I know there must be more than just that. By shorthand, I am talking about stuff like: ($var) ? true : false;

• Windows API GUI programming

  Hi! I'm working on a Project with outdated, very old looking GUI (the used GUI framework is more than 10 years old) Since the used programming language is Eiffel, there are almost no good libraries for GUI development. Although Wrappers for C libraries exist, it's not that easy to wrap something like Qt with them. The current GUI framework uses the Windows API to create windows, widgets and so on. But as stated - it's very old. Now i would like to learn more about how to use the Windows API directly to create state of the art GUI's Can someone recommend any reading material? Thanks!

• OS memory allocation addresses

  Quick curious question, memory allocation addresses are choosed by the language compiler or is it the OS which chooses the addresses for the memory asked? This is from a doubt about virtual memory, where it could be quickly explained as "let the process think he owns all the memory", but what happens on 64 bits architectures where only 48 bits are used for memory addresses if the process wants a higher address? Lets say you do a int a = malloc(sizeof(int)); and you have no memory left from the previous system call so you need to ask the OS for more memory, is the compiler the one who determines the memory address to allocate this variable, or does it just ask the OS for memory and it allocates it on the address returned by it?

• Should I update an application when a used framework release a new version?

  I have an application that use several libraries and frameworks, should I update my application to use the latest version of those frameworks when a new stable version is available? For example, migrate from python 2.x to python 3.x, or from spring 2.5 to spring 3.0, but the question es very general, not language specific. If I keep the application updated to use the latest stable frameworks versions then I will have new features available in case I need them. If I don't, then may be in a future I will need to do the update and it will be a lot of work to update the application. Is there any best practice about this?

• Problem creating PostGIS template database

  I am trying to build a template geographic database for PostGIS (1.5) on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) for my GeoDjango application. I am following: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/gis/install/#creating-a-spatial-database-template-for-postgis I've managed to come up to the point where the provided postgis.sql should be run (i.e. psql -d template_postgis -f $POSTGIS_SQL_PATH/postgis.sql) At that point I am getting an error at the first SQL statement that is tried to be run. • Help with MVC controller: passing a string from view to controller

  Hi guys, I'm having trouble with one particular issue, I was hoping someone could help me out. I've completed the MVC Music Store tutorial, and now I'm trying to add some administrator functionality - practice as I will have to do this in an MVC application in my job. The application is using the aspnet membership api, and what I have done so far is created a view to list the users. What I want to be able to do, is click on the users name in order to change their password. To try and carry the username to the changeUserPassword controller (custom made). I registered a new route in the global.asax.cs file in order to display the username in the URL, which is working so far. This is in order to pass it through to enable me to reset the password. Having debugged through the code, it seems that 'username' is null. How can I get this to work so that the username carries over from the Html.RouteLink, to the changeUserPassword action? • php not showing all images

  I a writing a gallery app in php. The images are dynamically displayed through php. On each load of the page, not all images are showing. it does this randomly, on each load. I have not had this problem before, as I am new to php. • Memory-Mapped Files & Transparent Persistence of Java Objects

  Greeting All, I want to achieve transparent persistence of Java objects through memory-mapped files (utilize the OS paging/swapping mechanism). My problem is: how can I move a Java object to my memory-mapped block ? Plus, how can I force a new object instance to reside in such blocks ? As you all know, a memory-mapped block can be seen as a byte array, and what I am really asking here is how to overlap the address space of Java objects with the one of such arrays ? If Java does not allow me for this, what cross-platform & garbage-collecting OO language would you advise me to use ? Thank you all in advance.

• Estimate gaussian (mixture) density from a set of weighted samples

  Assume I have a set of weighted samples, where each samples has a corresponding weight between 0 and 1. I'd like to estimate the parameters of a gaussian mixture distribution that is biased towards the samples with higher weight. In the usual non-weighted case gaussian mixture estimation is done via the EM algorithm. Does anyone know an implementation (any language is ok) that permits passing weights? If not, does anyone know how to modify the algorithm to account for the weights? If not, can some one give me a hint on how to incorporate the weights in the initial formula of the maximum-log-likelihood formulation of the problem? Thanks!

• Possible apache/mysql/php wrapper?

  I was tasked with writing a smallish program for data input and manipulation. My language of choice happens to be PHP. I have written out the program/site it all works fine is easily portable and everything but have one question. Is there anyway to wrap up apache/mysql/php into a bundle of one exe? I know of MoWes Portable and other options but I am looking to basically wrap everything up into a single exe without much fuss to the end user. My target users are very low on the computer savvy scale. I am trying to avoid a batch file for launching and don't really want them able to shutdown one part on accident and not another (IE shut off mysql but leave apache on).

  i am not sure if this is the correct way of doing but i read that you not suppose to have a WCF Service Library reference in your web form project rather you add endpoints to your web.config, is that true? here is what i have done: 1) create a WCF service library project 2) create a simple service called "MyService.svc" WebForm: 1) Create a web project 2) create a WCF Service and in it i have this code <%@ ServiceHost Language="C#" Service="WCFJQuery.ContactBLL.Implementation.ContactUs" Factory="System.ServiceModel.Activation.WebScriptServiceHostFactory" %> 3) right click on the web proejct and "Add Reference" and add teh MyService.dll reference from WCF service library project. is this something how you suppose to do?

  Hello. Unfortunately, (written) midterms are necessary in most university CS programs in the world. They tell us how well our students (and ourselves as teachers) are doing. Needless to say, designing midterms for a C Programming Language course is not easy. For instance, when we do program for real, we have a myriad of information at our disposal: websites, books, cheat sheets to "remember" the syntax and so on. My question is this: did you find any way, during your years at school or training, where you said: ok, this midterm evaluation of my programming skills is tough, but fair. For instance: I found "find 5 problems with this code"-type questions hard but interesting and telling. Are there any others? Thanks.

• Machine learning in OCaml or Haskell?

  I'm hoping to use either Haskell or OCaml on a new project because R is too slow. I need to be able to use support vectory machines, ideally separating out each execution to run in parallel. I want to use a functional language and I have the feeling that these two are the best so far as performance and elegance are concerned (I like Clojure, but it wasn't as fast in a short test). I am leaning towards OCaml because there appears to be more support for integration with other languages so it could be a better fit in the long run (e.g. OCaml-R). Does anyone know of a good tutorial for this kind of analysis, or a code example, in either Haskell or OCaml?

  I'm familiarizing myself with Ruby and it's the first time I see synonyms for methods in the standard library. For now I've found the ones in the Enumerable module: collect <- map detect <- find include <- member etc. Probably other modules contains synonymic methods too. Why are they there? Is it some kind of backward compatibility? Or is it a feature of the language, so the programmer can choose between different options depending on the context to make the program look like plain English?

• Saving Types generated via Reflection.Emit as code file (.cs) instead of saving it in .dll files

  Before start let me tell my experience: I am experienced with C#.NET, web services, XML part and few more. Reflection is something new to me, though I have read extensively on it and tried out some experimental code, but haven't made anything great using reflection I checked out many examples of how we can create Type at runtime and then which can be saved in an assembly (.dll) files. Of all the examples I have seen is about saving the created types in the .dll files instead of code file. Isn't there any way to create the code file out of reflection? I need to create code file since I want to distribute code instead of compiled assemblies. What I want to do is something like xsd.exe does, either spit out a .dll or the code file(in any language). Isn't there any way to create a code file, since most of the place I can find is AssemblyBuilder ab = System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.DefineDynamicAssembly(an, AssemblyBuilderAccess.Save); and then lastly ab.Save("QuoteOfTheDay.dll");

• Rotation towards an object in 3d space

  hello, i have two coordinates on a 2d plane in 3d space, and am trying to rotate one coordinate (a vector) to face the other coordinate. my vertical axis is the y-axis, so if both of the coordinates are located flat on the 2d plane, they would both have a y-axis of 0, and their x and z coordinates determine their position length/width-wise on the plane. right now, i'm calculating the angle like so (language agnostic): angle = atan2(z2-z1,x2-x1); and am rotating/translating in space like so: pushMatrix(); rotateY(angle); popMatrix(); this doesn't seem to be working though. are my calculations/process correct?

  Hi, I have an executable that run time should take configuration parameters from a script file. This way I dont need to re-compile the code for every configuration change. Right now I have all the configuration values in a .h file. Everytime I change it i need to re-compile. The platform is C, gcc under Linux. What is the best solution for this problem? I looked up on google and so XML, phthon and Lua bindings for C. Is using a separate scripting language the best approach? If so, which one would you recommend for my need? Thanks

• How would you communicate with aliens as a computer scientist?

  Let's say aliens arrive on Earth and instead of just sending mathematicians and linguistic experts governments around the work decide to send an expert of major field. After a quick round of sorting you are paired up with an alien computer scientist. Given you don't understand each others language how would you using computer science to start the ground work of communication? eg. We know binary is universal, but not the way we write it. The symbols are not universal nor is the the direction we write it (MSB vs LSB and left vs right) Assume aliens are "similar" to us physically it won't impede visual communication.

• Advanced command line argument parsing in Java?

  Does anyone have any java examples for parsing a series of command line arguements in a robust way? I'm looking to be able to handle something like: java myapp [-l language] [-d int] [-f file1 file2 file3] I want to do this in a robust way so I can provide logical error messages to the user if they mistake a command line-option. Some of these options I'd like to make optional, etc, etc. Also, the -f file list should be able to handle a list of files. Is there some library out there to assist me in handling this?

• How to recognise vehicle licence / number plate (ANPR) from an image?

  Hi all, I have a web site that allows users to upload images of cars and I would like to put a privacy filter in place to detect registration plates on the vehicle and blur them. The blurring is not a problem but is there a library or component (open source preferred) that will help with finding a licence within a photo? Caveats; I know nothing is perfect and image recognition of this type will provide false positive and negatives. I appreciate that we could ask the user to select the area to blur and we will do this as well, but the question is specifically about finding that data programmatically; so answers such as 'get a person to check every image' is not helpful. This software method is called 'Automatic Number Plate Recognition' in the UK but I cannot see any implementations of it as libraries. Any language is great although .Net is preferred.   So I have N (for example, 1000) JPEG frames and 10*N ( for example, 100) seconds of MP3 sound. I need some container for joining them into one video file (at 10 frames/second) (popular containers like FLV or AVI or MOV are better). So what I need is an algorithm or code example of combining my data into some popular format. The code example should be in some language like C#, Java, ActionScript or PHP. The algorithm should be theoretically implementable with ActionScript or PHP. Can any one, please help me with that?

• Full text searching in SQL Server 2008 Express Advanced

  Hi, I have recently installed SQL Server 2008 Express Edition with Advanced Services on XP Pro but am having trouble getting full text searching to work with an restored database. The database was originally created in SQL Server 2005. When I call a stored proc that uses the full text index then I get the following error: Full-Text Search is not installed, or a full-text component cannot be loaded. This is my db version: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (RTM) - 10.0.1600.22 (Intel X86) Jul 9 2008 14:43:34 Copyright (c) 1988-2008 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition with Advanced Services on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 3) When I run: SELECT DATABASEPROPERTY('DBNAME','ISFULLTEXTENABLED') I get: 1 Also, when I look in the advanced properties for the db server in Management Studio I see both the "Default Full-Text Language" and "Full-Text Upgrade Option" properties. However, when I go to SQL Server Configuration Manager I don't see the "MSSQLFDLauncher" service. Does anyone know how to get this working? Cheers, Iain
