• Flash Retirement - HTML to be "the one"

  I will update this blog post as we get closer to the retirement of the Flash portal. As you might have read the support.oracle.com  flash site will be replaced with what you see in supporthtml.oracle.com,  once we get the rest of the features and functions ported over to the html site. The HTML site is written using Oracle's ADF stack. So we are now pretty much 100% eating our own dog food.  More details to follow.

• Entity Framework 4 - Generating Entities based on Views

  Just a quick post regarding a common issue and fix... When attempting to add a view as an entity to your model the EF generator may complain that it is unable to find or infer a primary key on your view. As a result, it will not add it to the model. The quick fix is to add the following to which ever column you wish to be the primary key within your view: ISNLL(TableA.ColumnA, -999) myPrimaryKeyColumnName Adding this will allow the EF generator to infer the primary key and add the view as an entity to your model.

• HP Chromebook 14 Crouton = Broken packages

  I'm completely new and inept with ubuntu. I've recently purchased a chromebook 14 by Hewlett-Packard and today find out how to install Crouton for it. My goal is to be able to use steam on the chromebook for small time-killing games. My issue is that no matter what kind of application I attempt to install, it always tells me it has "broken dependencies" I also tried installing debian versions of "Firefox", "Chrome", "Opera" as well as "Cave Story+" from humble bundle. I've tried to do the sudo apt-get install -f as well as loads of other commands but nothing works What can I do, I can post any specs you need and am ready to use another way to get to steam such as ChrUbuntu if my issue is unfixable

• Are there any surveys on to what degree developers like or hate scrum ?

  Background: During a conference an analyst pointed out in a tweet that developers hate scrum. Myself and another person responded that this was not the case, and started discussing different scenarios on why developers would dislike scrum. One of the scenarios where that lazy developers are not able to hide in a scrum project. They are constantly challenged by the team to contribute. • Another Update to SQL Server Configuration Scripting Utility

  I’ve been gradually adding features to my utility that scripts the configuration of a SQL Server.  Since my last post I’ve added the following features: Skip any encrypted object in a database Script alerts, alert notifications and operators Script audits Always script model, master and msdb to capture any user-defined objects in those databases Logins are now scripted so that everything for a login is grouped together. There’s a second section in the logins that handles default databases.  In many cases a login’s default database is a mirror target and can’t be set.  This is now handled gracefully.  It also includes a separate section for all default databases so those can be quickly set in the event of a disaster. Script credentials Script proxy accounts Script database mail My goal is still to get everything outside a database scripted.  This release is enough that I can keep my mirror target servers in sync with their principals.

• XNA - positioning after rotation

  I have a turret with a 2 gunbarrels. The turret rotates towards my mouse. So far no problem. When it creates a few bullets and positions them at the end of the gun barrels. Here is the problem. It only works the moment the gun is point upwards. The moment it rotates the end of the gun barrels have moved ofcourse, thus the bullets don't spawn at the end of the gun battels, but at the place the where the gun barrels are when the turret is pointing upwards. How can I check where the end of the gun barrels are the moment it rotates? Thanks in Advance, Mark Dijkema PS. • Security for LDAP authentication for Collabnet

  In a previous post, I wrote about how to get LDAP authentication working in Collabnet. By default, all LDAP users are put into the Users role on the server.  For most purposes, this is just fine, and I don’t have a way to change this.  The documentation gives hints that you can add them to other roles, but for now, I don’t have the need. However, adding permissions to different repositories is a different question. To add them, go to the repositories list, select Access Rules and then you can enter in their username, as it sits in Active Directory to the lists for the repositories or for the predefined groups that you have created.  To my knowledge, you cannot use the Active Directory groups in collabnet, which is a big problem.  Needing to micromanage users really limits the usefulness of the LDAP integration. • Point domain to new host - changed nameservers, now what?

  This is driving me nuts, because I know I'm missing something simple. I've read numerous articles/posts about how to point (not transfer) your domain to a new web host. They all say to change the name server settings at your old host, so here is what I did: On old host (1and1.com) changed the name server settings to those of my new host (inmotionhosting.com) like below: Domain name : mydomain.com Name server 1: ns.inmotionhosting.com Name server 2: ns2.inmotionhosting.com ... and confirmed this is active (did it a couple days ago) This is where every post/article I've found stops. They imply this is all that needs to be done. But how does the new host know to point the domain to my account, and the directory in my account I want it work from?? There's go to be something else to be done - just pointing to the generic name servers of the new host can't be all there is to it. Thanks in advance...I'm bewildered...

• Ubuntu 12.04 Responsiveness Extremely Slow on Nvidia 8800?

  Just installed 12.04... This is the first time I run Ubuntu with the Unity UI, not a pleasant experience. The responsiveness is extremely slow (10s after a mouseclick), the screen flickers, etc, all right after logging in. Switching the display driver from Nvidia current to post-release doesn't help at all. What now? Can't go back, but Ubuntu is useless to me right now. What can I do? (The system is a Intel 4x2.4Ghz with 4Gb RAM and a Nvidia 8800.)

• Wordpress does not create directories?

  First I will just tell you how my wordpress hierarchy looks like: /var/www has all of the wordpress files, which is different from how it is normally set up as /var/www/wordpress (symlinked to /usr/share/wordpress). So var/www contains all of the files that /usr/share/wordpress would have, and /usr/share/wordpress is symlinked to /var/www, with an extra /var/www/wordpress symlinked to /var/www to prevent possible compatibility issues. When uploading a file like a favicon or a .zip-ped theme, everything works fine, and when checking if the theme/favicon is uploaded, wordpress shows that it is, and points to a directory that it thinks that it had created, like http:/localhost/wp-content/uploads/2012/..., which it had not, because the uploads folder is empty! And so there is a broken link on the internet and the theme is displayed but it has just plain text (because it had reverted to a plain theme I think) Please help! I am sorry for such a long post but this is really quite a troublesome problem. I have chowned /var/www and /usr/share/wordpress to www-data.

• Reduce weight in healthy way - Day 3

  So I am on Day 3 and what I did today was totally opposite of what I should have done. It seems I will take ever to loose what I had aim for. Today I had ate more than 5000 Calorie, had soda drinks and very oily indian food. On my Day 2 post some one commented that with the number that I have I will loose 1 lbs in a week, but my friends it seems I will gain 5 lbs in a week. I have to straighten my act and really focus on what I want to achieve. I am going to hit the gym and going to burn atleast 500 calorie today.Piece of advice - don't eat fried, oily  and junk food.  Try to have as much as vegetables in your food. I understand its not possible as being a normal person and not a diet freak I know its impossible to be away from Taco or burger and not drink Coke, but to achieve something you have to loose something.

• Chinese bots in my forum

  I have a small community forum that doesn't really get posts or any real traffic. The only thing that happens on the regular is bots with Chinese IPs signing up gibberish usernames. Most bots don't make it past the captcha but some do. I try to stay on top of this by banning IPs and ranges of IPs but it doesn't really seem to help. The bots never post anything so what are they doing? Should I be worried? Should I keep banning IPs or is it futile?

• Good interview programming projects

  I'm looking for some small programming projects that I can give potential employees to gauge their programming abilities. These will be programmers straight out of college. I'm looking for projects that would take someone a couple of hours and they would email back their answers post-interview. One example would be to take this paragraph of text and return a list of alphabetized unique words. After each word tell me how many times the word appeared and in what sentance(s) the word appreared in. Anyone have any good suggestions?

• seo value of duplicating content externally

  I run a website that includes a blog which was hand-coded by myself and is hosted on the same domain. My partner in this endeavour thinks it would be a good idea to open up a blogger/wordpress blog and duplicate the on-site blog on this off-site blog. AFAIK the main reason for doing this is the SEO benefits of the inbound links that this off-site blog will create. I think this is a bad idea, because: Effectively what we're doing is creating a (very small scale) link farm We're more likely to be punished than rewarded (in SEO terms) for duplicating our content across domains This introduces a problem of synchronising our content across domains. For example, if a blog post is edited on the on-site blog, then ideally the off-site blog should be similarly updated. I know very little about SEO, so would be interested to hear what more informed readers have to say.

  I am writing a utility that runs on RHEL5 command line. I need my command line options to be simple but powerful. I looked at the various UNIX utilities to get an idea of how simple command line utilities have to be. Do you guys suggest any documents/links that talk about command line etiquette? I am modelling my utility on top of LVM (that's all the info I can give for now). I know it's a software engineering question, but I thought it would be appropriate to post here. Please advise....
