• Beginner's Language app

  Hi I'm a techie with no programing experience. I know html and css, but I'd like to someday be able to make an app for my phone (I have an android) and possibly mobile websites. I made learning a programing language and creating a mobile app a goal for my job, and now my boss would like me to pick a programing language to learn. I found a free open course from MIT (http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-00-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-fall-2008/) called introduction to computer science. In the course they teach python, but more importantly it seems they teach how to think like a programmer. When I told my boss about the free online course she didn't think that Python was an appropriate language for me to learn. She'd like me to learn a language that is more similar to one used to make Phone apps. Does anyone out there know a better language for me to pick up that would be similar to Android or iPhone's App language. Thank you

• How do I create a sqlite 3 (.sl3) database file?

  I have a *.sqlite file... but I need the database in *.sl3 format? What software/tool can I us to create that? What are the steps? This is to be used in an iPhone app. Original developer used an .sl3 file, now that I have updated the DB - I can't seem to export/generate a .sl3 file I have tried just changing the extension - all the way to inserting the *.sqlite file in XCode and pointing the app delegates to the new DB file format... doesn't work. • Are there real world applications where the use of prefix versus postfix operators matters?

  In college it is taught how you can do math problems which use the ++ or -- operators on some variable referenced in the equation such that the result of the equation would yield different results if you switched the operator from postfix to prefix or vice versa. Are there any real world applications of using postfix or prefix operator where it makes a difference as to which you use? It doesn't seem to me (maybe I just don't have enough experience yet in programming) that there really is much use to having the different operators if it only applies in math equations. EDIT: Suggestions so far include: function calls //f(++x) != f(x++) loop comparison //while (++i < MAX) != while (i++ < MAX)

• Is LISP still useful in, and which version is most used in todays world ?

  I try to teach myself a new programming language in regular intervals of time. Recently, I've read how Lisp and its dialects are at the complete opposite end of the spectrum from languages like C/C++, which made me curious enough to know more about it. However, two things are unclear to me, and I'm looking for guidance on them : Is LISP still practiced/used in todays world, or is it a legacy language like FORTRAN/COBOL ? I mean, apart from maintaining existing code, is it used on new projects at all ? What is the most widely used dialect ? I came across Scheme and Common Lisp as the 2 most prevalent dialects, and wanted your opinion as to which is the most favored/useful one to learn - and would be immensely gratified if you can suggest any resources for a rank beginner to start from. While eager to learn a language which is fundamentally different from the procedural languages I'm used to, I don't want to invest undue effort in something if its totally obsolete - I'd still learn it if it was professionally "dead", but only with an academic perspective...

• Why use 3d matrix and camera in 2D world for 2d geometric figures?

  I'm working in XNA on a 2d isometric world/game and I'm using DrawUserPrimitives to draw some geometric figures... I saw some tutorials about creating dynamic shadows but I didn't understood why they use a "3d" matrix to control the transformations since the figure I'm drawing is in 2d perspective. I know I'm drawing a 2d figure in 3d but I still can't understand if I really need to work with the matrix. Is there any advantage in using a 3d Matrix to control camera and view? Any reason why I can't just update my vertex's positions by using a regular method since the view is always the same... And since I want to work only with single figures, won't this cause all the geometric figures have the same transformations simultaneously?   I know it is goofy to geek out about such things, but I am a pretty goofy geek.  Today we published support for the Apple icons for devices like the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.  Now when you add Geekswithblogs.net to your home screen (via the little + in Safari) it will load the icon to the left instead of a screenshot of the site.  We have been using my iPhone and iPad to surf to GWB for awhile and we were tired of that screenshot.  Simple Google/Bing search and a little Photoshop CS5 (Amazing!!!) work and there it is.  Next step we are taking in the Apple iPad/Phone arena is getting our developer kit and seeing what possiblities there are for Geekswithblogs.net and a custom App.  Got any ideas? Here is a shot of my iPad 3G: Also, would anyone be interested in a Geekswithblogs.net custom background for the iPhone or iPad?  I can put something together real quick if there are any takers.

  How can I simulate a rigid sword bounced from a wall and hit the ground (like in physical world)? I want to use this for a simple animation. I can detect the figure and the size of the sword (maybe needed in doing bounce). Rotation can be controlled by quaternions/matrix/euler angles. It should turn the head and do rotations and fly to the ground. How can I simulate this physical process? Maybe what I need is an equation and some parameters? I need these data, and would combine them into my movie file, I use Mathematica to do the thing that generate the movie file(If I have the data, I can also export it into a 3DSMax script for example).

  I want to create a big multiplayer world in UDK and I'm having a few difficulties. I created the biggest terrain possible but then any terrain related action I do takes forever. However, I've seen videos of people make same size terrain and working without a problem. My pc is strong enough, so maybe someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I want to make it even bigger then the biggest terrain size, so I was thinking of doing level streaming but then I read that streaming is working server side which means if I have a player on every terrain all terrains will still be loaded and I want to save as much memory possible so it will work well online.
