• Help with why my app crashed?

  I'm writing an iPad app that is a "kiosk" app. The iPad should be hanging on the wall and the app should just run. I did a test, starting the app last night (Friday, December 31) and letting it run. This morning, when I woke up, it was not running. I just checked the iPad's console and I can't figure out why it crashed. The iPad was plugged in and so the battery is not the issued. I did disable the idleTimer in my application delegate. The app was seen running as late as midnight last night. I would like to note that my app acts as a Bluetooth server through Game Kit and large portion of the console output is occupied by bluetooth status messages. When I opened the iPad, the app was paused and there was a system alert which prompted me to check an "Expiring Provisioning Profile". I tapped "dismiss" and the alert went away. The app crashed about a second after I dismissed the system alert. Any ideas how I can diagnose this problem? Why would my app crash? Here is my iPad's Console log, as copied from Xcode's organizer. Edit: A bit of Googling lead me to this site which says that alert views cause the app to lose focus. Could that be involved? What can I do to fix the problem? EDIT2: My Crash log describes the situation as: Application Specific Information: appname failed to resume in time Elapsed total CPU time (seconds): 10.010 (user 8.070, system 1.940), 100% CPU Elapsed application CPU time (seconds): 9.470, 95% CPU

• Learning Java, how to type text on canvas?

  I'm reading a book by Eric Roberts - Art and science of java and it got an excersise that I can't figure out - You have to make calendar, with GRect's, 7 by 6, that goes ok, the code part is easy, but also you have to type the numbers of the date on those rectangles, and it's kinda hard for me, there is nothing about it in the book. I tried using GLabel thing, but here arises the problem that I need to work on those numbers, and it says "can't convert from int to string and vice versa". GLabel (string, posX, posY) - it is not accepting int as a parameter, only string, I even tried typecasting, still not working. For example I want to make a loop int currentDate = 1; while (currentDate < 31) { add(new Glabel(currentDate, 100, 100); currentDate++; This code is saying that no man, can't convert int to string. If i try changing currentDate to string, it works, but I got a problem with calculation, as I can't manipulate with number in string, it doesn't even allow to typecast it into int. How can I fix it? Maybe there is another class or method to type the text over those rectangles? I know about println but it doen't have any x or y coordinates, so I can't work with it. And I think it's only for console programs.

On the other hand, the select list never picks up the value of the input nor will the input pick up the value of the select list until you click on it.

• Using a MockContext inside a Java package not an Android Package.

  I have moved most of my Android code into a separate Java package. I want to run some JUnit4 tests however I can't seem to get a MockContext working. I have extended MockContext() but have not done anything with it yet as I don't know what need to be done. • iOS Simulator is black on app execution

  I am running xcode 5.1.1 and have been trying to learn objective C / iOS development. Right now whenever I try to run my code on the emulator (I do not have an actual device atm) it comes up with a black screen. Code can be found here. • GNU C++ how to check when -std=c++0x is in effect?

  My system compiler (gcc42) works fine with the TR1 features that I want, but trying to support newer compiler versions other than the systems, trying to accessing TR1 headers an #error demanding the -std=c++0x option because of how it interfaces with library or some hub bub like that. /usr/local/lib/gcc45/include/c++/bits/c++0x_warning.h:31:2: error: #error This file requires compiler and library support for the upcoming ISO C++ standard, C++0x. This support is currently experimental, and must be enabled with the -std=c++0x or -std=gnu++0x compiler options. Having to supply an extra switch is no problem, to support GCC 4.4 and 4.5 under this system (FreeBSD), but obviously it changes the picture! Using my system compiler (g++ 4.2 default dialect): #include <tr1/foo> using std::tr1::foo; Using newer (4.5) versions of the compiler with -std=c++0x: #include <foo> using std::foo; Is there anyway using the pre processor, that I can tell if g++ is running with C++0x features enabled? Something like this is what I'm looking for: #ifdef __CXX0X_MODE__ #endif but I have not found anything in the manual or off the web. At this rate, I'm starting to think that life would just be easier, to use Boost as a dependency, and not worry about a new language standard arriving before TR4... hehe.

• Is it possible to embed a flash player in a table and retain the table properties

  I'd like to embed a music (flash) player in a table with clickable images but the embed code seems to throw the table properties off - it extends the width of the table. Is it possible to embed the player on the same row as the image whilst still retaining the table width? • Why do I get errors when using unsigned integers in an expression with C++?

  Given the following piece of (pseudo-C++) code: float x=100, a=0.1; unsigned int height = 63, width = 63; unsigned int hw=31; for (int row=0; row < height; ++row) { for (int col=0; col < width; ++col) { float foo = x + col - hw + a * (col - hw); cout << foo << " "; } cout << endl; } The values of foo are screwed up for half of the array, in places where (col - hw) is negative. I figured because col is int and comes first, that this part of the expression is converted to int and becomes negative. Unfortunately, apparently it doesn't, I get an overflow of an unsigned value and I've no idea why. How should I resolve this problem? Use casts for the whole or part of the expression? What type of casts (C-style or static_cast<...)? Is there any overhead to using casts (I need this to work fast!)? EDIT: I changed all my unsigned ints to regular ones, but I'm still wondering why I got that overflow in this situation.

• Java HashMap containsKey always false

  I have the funny situation, that I store a Coordinate into a HashMap<Coordinate, GUIGameField>. Now, the strange thing about it is, that I have a fragment of code, which should guard, that no coordinate should be used twice. But if I debug this code: if (mapForLevel.containsKey(coord)) { throw new IllegalStateException("This coordinate is already used!"); } else { ...do stuff... } ... the containsKey always returns false, although I stored a coordinate with a hashcode of 9731 into the map and the current coord also has the hashcode 9731. After that, the mapForLevel.entrySet() looks like: (java.util.HashMap$EntrySet) [(270,90)=gui.GUIGameField@29e357, (270,90)=gui.GUIGameField@ca470] What could I have possibly done wrong? I ran out of ideas. • How to convert Big Endian and how to flip the highest bit?

  I am using a TStream to read binary data (thanks to this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2878180/how-to-use-a-tfilestream-to-read-2d-matrices-into-dynamic-array). My next problem is that the data is Big Endian. From my reading, the Swap() method is seemingly deprecated. How would I swap the types below? 16-bit two's complement binary integer 32-bit two's complement binary integer 64-bit two's complement binary integer IEEE single precision floating-point - Are IEEE affected by Big Endian? And, finally, since the data is unsigned, the creators of this dataset have stored the unsigned values as signed integers (excluding the IEEE). They instruct that one need only add an offset (2^15, 2^31, and 2^63) to recover the unsigned data. But, they note that flipping the most significant bit is the fastest way to do that. How does one efficiently flip the most significant bit of a 16, 32, or 64-bit integer? So, if the data on disk (16-bit) is "85 FB" - the desired result after reading the data and swapping and bit flipping would be 1531. Is there a way to accomplish the swapping and bit flipping with generics so it fits into the generic answer at the link above? Yes, kids, THIS is how scientific astronomical data is stored by NASA, ESO, and all professional astronomers. This FITS standard is considered by some to be one of the most successful standards ever created in its proliferation and flexibility!

• IIS doesn't send two responses to the same client at the same time (only for ASP)

  I've got 2 ASP pages. I do a request to the first page from Firefox (which takes 30 seconds to process on server-side), and during the execution of 30 seconds I do another request from Firefox to the second page (takes less than 1 second in server-side), but it does come after 31 second. Because it waits first requests to finish. When I request to the first page from Firefox and then request the second page from IE it's just instant. So basically ASP - IIS 6 somehow limiting every client to one request (long processing request) at a time. I need to get around this problem in my .NET client application. This is tested in 3 different systems. If you want to test you can try the ASP scripts at the end. This behaviour is same in a long SQL execution or just in a time consuming ASP operation. Note: It's not about HTTP Keep Alive It's not about persistent connection limit (we tried to increase this in firefox and in .NET with Net.ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit) It's not about User Agent This doesn't happen in ASP.NET so I assume it's something to the with ASP.dll I'm trying to solve this on the client not the server. I don't have direct control over the server it's a 3rd party solution. Is there any way to get around this? • Maven + SSDM Build and Runtime Environment Automation

  Preface: My Company, like most, has several run-time environments and several release versions which themselves are composed of different versions of various jars. For example, let us consider release versions 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 of Software X, which may be deployed to a developer computer, testing, or production. Software-x-1.1 is itself composed of jarA-0.9.1 and jarB-0.7.5, but software-x-1.3 is composed of jarA-1.7.31 and jarB-0.8.1. Currently we use Spring's PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer to configure run-time variables (such as database credentials), however, properties also change with release versions. We also use Maven 2 POM version 4 to specify which versions of our code need to be used. We place the version numbers of our jars as properties within profiles (dev,test,prod) inside of the parent pom and then reference those version numbers in all project poms. As of right now, we have no way to specify which project versions pertain to a given release other than the most current one. Moreover, we deploy our run-time configurations to the SSDM pickup which then configures and creates the services defined by the built versions of our software. -- Questions: Is there any procedure/tool we can use to build our product by merely providing the run-time environment and version number? IE "build 1.1 dev"? Is there anyway we can store the required jar versions for each release build? We are currently versioning all files, including the parent pom, but merely versioning the parent pom does not record which release version is pertinent to that parent pom. What else can we do to further automate the process of builds? For example, if we could manage run-time configurations within the parent pom that would be a step in the right direction, but that seems like a violation of scope. Any tool outside of our framework is inconceivable at this point, but not in the far future. Summary: How can we automate our build process to the fullest extent without being error prone?

• Fix N+1 query in "declarative_authorization" gem using gem "bullet"

  Currently I am working on one big web application and to make it work faster I decided to refactor all N+1 queries (to decrease number of requests to database, http://rails-bestpractices.com/posts/29-fix-n-1-queries). So I installed gem "bullet" which doesn`t work with Rails 3.1.1 now (you can use fork from https://github.com/flyerhzm/bullet). I'm storing information in a struct like this: struct AnyStruct { AnyStruct : testInt(20), testDouble(100.01), testBool1(true), testBool2(false), testBool3(true), testChar('x') {} int testInt; double testDouble; bool testBool1; bool testBool2; bool testBool3; char testChar; std::vector<char> getBinaryBlock() { //how to build that? } } The struct should be sent via network in a binary byte-buffer with the following structure: Bit 00- 31: testInt Bit 32- 61: testDouble most significant portion Bit 62- 93: testDouble least significant portion Bit 94: testBool1 Bit 95: testBool2 Bit 96: testBool3 Bit 97-104: testChar According to this definition the resulting std::vector should have a size of 13 bytes (char == byte) My question now is how I can form such a packet out of the different datatypes I've got. I've already read through a lot of pages and found datatypes like std::bitset or boost::dynamic_bitset, but neither seems to solve my problem. I think it is easy to see, that the above code is just an example, the original standard is far more complex and contains more different datatypes. Solving the above example should solve my problems with the complex structures too i think.   I am thinking of a "naive" timekeeping system of the sort I believe would be likely to be implemented by non-specialists. A day is exactly 24 hours. An hour is exactly 60 minutes. A minute is exactly 60 seconds. No exceptions (i.e. no Daylight Saving or leap seconds). A leap year occurs exactly once every four years: if the year modulo 4 equals 0, it is a leap year. The month lengths are the normal 31 days for January, 28 or 29 days for February, etc., that you would expect to find on a wall calendar. Days of the week, if they are used, are what you would get by taking your contemporary (late 1900's / early 2000's) wall calendar and, using the above rules for leap years and month lengths, extrapolating in both directions: if the calendar goes far back enough, February 29, 1900 exists and is a Wednesday; and if the calendar goes far forward enough, February 29, 2100 exists and is a Monday. What name, if any, is used to describe precisely this system?

• What kind of data do I pass into a Django Model.save() method?

  Lets say that we are getting POSTed a form like this in Django: rate=10 items= [23,12,31,52,83,34] The items are primary keys of an Item model. I have a bunch of business logic that will run and create more items based on this data, the results of some db lookups, and some business logic. I want to put that logic into a save signal or an overridden Model.save() method of another model (let's call it Inventory). The business logic will run when I create a new Inventory object using this form data. Inventory will look like this: class Inventory(models.Model): picked_items = models.ManyToManyField(Item, related_name="items_picked_set") calculated_items = models.ManyToManyField(Item, related_name="items_calculated_set") rate = models.DecimalField() ... other fields here ... New calculated_items will be created based on the passed in items which will be stored as picked_items. My question is this: is it better for the save() method on this model to accept: the request object (I don't really like this coupling) the form data as arguments or kwargs (a list of primary keys and the other form fields) a list of Items (The caller form or view will lookup the list of Items and create a list as well as pass in the other form fields) some other approach? I know this is a bit subjective, but I was wondering what the general idea is. I've looked through a lot of code but I'm having a hard time finding a pattern I like.
